One of the greatest things about studying biology is how humbling it can be. We are all related at the evolutionary and biochemical level, and all populations have niches and selection pressures that result in more effective reproducers. The arbitrary guidelines and rules that humans have created to better understand the fascinating absurdities of the natural world dont alwasy count for the fortuity observed in nature. The nebulosity of what life is has always intrigued me, and how we truly are jsut conglomerations of individual microorgansims is testament to how conencted life is. A single cell is just as much alive as the macroscopic structure that it is a constiguent of.

@@jjphank everithing IN the universe has a cause, but that can't be automatically extended to the universe ITSELF, but assuming that the universe NEEDED to be created (wich is not necessarily true as i stated) and that it's creator was immaterial (again not necessarily true, it could have been a material cause outside of the universe) it doesn't mean that it is intelligent. It could very well have been a physical process we courrently don't know of, but even if it was something intelligent it doesn't mean it remained to watch and manage the universe, maybe it simply created energy, matter and wrote the laws of physics and then left to create something else or maybe even died (and it sure does seem the universe runs only on the laws of physics without any intervention). But even if it's creator remained to watch over the universe it doesn't mean that it is your god (or any god of any religion for the record), it could very well be a complete different entity maybe not even omnipotent, but just powerfull enought to create a universe (wich sure is powerfull, but not even close to the power to do ANYTHING it wishes in any way it wants, defying any law or limitation conceivable and inconceivable to man). And even if it was your particular god how can you be sure the Bible is it's word? It was written by men and men are imperfect and prone to error. Maybe god inspired the first writers, but maybe they accidentally or voluntarily misunderstood his words and wrote something completely different and even if they didn't, the Bible has been traslated thousands of times from hundreds of different languages and even in translation there could be, angain, accidentally or voluntarily errors. And finally maybe the Bible was only a metaphorical message to reach god and not a precise story of how the universe came to be and how it functions.
Do you understand that even if all your premeses were true (wich shoud be demonstrated in some way) your conclusion that the universe was created EXACTLY as written in the Bible could very well be not?
Do you understand that even if the first living thing was placed on earth by god himself and not formed from organic molecules derived from inorganic ones by natural processes, that would not in any way, shape or form disprove evolution by natural selection?

High school teachers also are required to teach the curriculum the set by state standards. Teachers have to submit lesson plans, give and grade tests, give individualized lessons to the students with IEPS & 504 ( SPECIAL ED). In addition, there are faculty meetings, reports, grades, progress reports, and parent communication. There are a multitude of tasks that teachers have to do in addition to teaching. Forrest is a great enthusiastic teacher who can craft his own lessons, but he doesn't have to do any of things teachers have to do on a daily basis.
Just giving some perspective on what teachers have to do besides giving an engaging, vibrant, lesson to students.
The people here want to learn. A high school classroom is not the same environment. You have kids who are downright defiant to teachers. There are kids who need learning or emotional support. There are kids just learning English all in the same classroom.

As a former Jehovah's Witness who was born into the religion, I never took notice of evolution when it was taught at school or when it was mentioned in nature programmes etc. But I've always been facinated by life, our planet and the universe. I was taught that evolution would steal the 'divine purpose' from me; that if the big bang was true, my entire life was inconsequential and meaningless, that I couldn't possibly be special or noteworthy if I'd simply evolved from a blob for no rhyme or reason.
And yet, it was that very 'divine purpose' that left me feeling inadequate, deflated and depressed. What if I didn't want to be what God had made me to be? Jehovah's Witnesses believe that God will one day cleanse the earth of wrongdoing, suffering and sin, replacing it with his original intention: a paradise earth where pain, suffering and death are no more. They believe that all righteous ones (i.e. all jehoahs witnesses lol) will be ressurected to enjoy this paradise, and that we will live for eternity.
But... what if the idea of living forever on a 'paradise earth' surrounded by hive-minded drones and copy-paste 'perfection' was actually my personal idea of Hell? What meaning could I possibly derive from my life if I was already perfect, never made a mistake, could never fail at anything, never felt pain or went through hardships, and was surrounded by other perfect people... with eternity to 'enjoy' it all? Man, I don't mean to glorify suffering, but there's a reason nothing good lasts forever - you really wouldn't want it to. And I knew that it didn't add up, but it's hard to question things that you're taught from birth.
I'm SO much happier now that I have evolution and the sciences in my life. I can find my own purpose. In fact, I don't even NEED a purpose at all - mans just here, innit? Lol. I define myself, or I can chose not to define myself at all. I have the oppertunity to be wrong and therefore learn how to be right - there is great satisfaction in the process if you have the right mindset. I can experience pain and suffering, and therefore appreciate the joy of that pain or suffering subsiding. I know bad, so I recognise good. Everything is so much more beautiful to me now; I can see how everything links together and I can relate to things around me in ways I never could have as a creationst. Conversations feel more meaninful, watching a little bird on the tree outside my window makes me happy, sunsets and rain and a cool looking pebble on the beach get me excited and emotional. It's like, I can feel it all. (NO i am not on drugs hahaha).
Yes, I still suffer from typical human problems like ADHD, anxiety, the odd depressive bout here and there... but knowing where those things stem from, knowing the history of my brain has helped me to cope with these things in a way that 'Oh, well just have faith that god will fix it, maybe, if you pray really hard and do this and do that...' never could. And it's not because I didn't try those things, it's because those things literally never had any effect whatsoever - not negative, not positive. Nothing. Because it's not real.
THANK YOU for your videos. You are amazing. I can only hope that others who may be feeling trapped in the boxes that theism and creationism crams them into can one day learn the truth, and free themselves.

I too was a JW from birth and everything you said rings true for me too. I too always was taught that evolution is completely unproven and just what people who have no faith in God use to explain how we are here - but it's full of holes and is directed by Satan, the spirit of the world.
As you rightly say, escaping that nonsense and educating myself on science (with the help of Forrest and reacteria) is like a medicine for my brain to fight all that crap that has been rammed in there for 30 years. JWs like all other cults create an illusion for you and if you dare question it they make you feel like your a prideful fool who is being pulled away from Satan.
Science, evolution, and understanding what we know about life has made me feel so much better - seeing the truth of the world. Not getting hung up on guilt for a dominating creator, but instead marvelling at how we are all connected and how beautiful that is.
Totally agree also about the promise of eternal life on a paradise earth being led by 9 idiots in NYC and carbon copy JWs - couldn't think of anything worse!

The idea of "living forever on a paradise earth" always irked me, even as a teenager. I ran away from home at 16 because I didn't want to go to the meetings anymore because I didn't believe any of it, but "until you're old enough to make that decision for yourself, you'll go to the meetings". As if forcing me to stay for another 2 years would somehow change my mind 🙄 But I had this argument with my dad, who doesn't seem to grasp the concept of what "forever" means. I said to him Don't you think eventually you'll get bored? To which he said no because there'll always be more to learn, and used the story of the biologist who studied one type of flower his entire life, and at the end of his life stated that after 80+ years, he still didn't know everything there was to know about that one flower... I said, yes but you'll live forever. Even if learning that one flower took 7000 years of study, guess how much longer you'll live? Forever. And even if learning *everything* there was to learn took you 97 trillion years, guess how long you'll have to live after that? **Forever** . Eventually you *WILL* get bored. But that concept didn't make sense to him.
He even stayed home from work one day so that he could research and plan everything he wanted to say to me, and as soon as I walked through the door after school, he called me over to the table, where he was sitting with the bible, reasoning from the scriptures, insight books etc etc.. he literally skipped work and used the entire day to plan his arguments and believed that he would win the argument against an unprepared teenager, but it didn't go that way.
I also asked him that if I can see how fake and disgusting all the people from the local congregations are, and want nothing to do with them, what makes him think I'd want to spend eternity with them? I told him that even if I died and suddenly found myself in front of Jehovah, who said that even though I didn't believe, he wanted me in paradise, I'd just say "thanks but no thanks - just give me the second death".
I've got so many more stories to tell, as I sure you do too, but yeah, it really is comforting to see how many JWs comment on these videos.

As I watch this series, the thought comes to me that biology and history are very much related. We study evolution partially for the same reason we study human history - we want to know what those who came before us were like, what they did, what they suffered. In that way, biology is very much like the history of non-human beings, and as a historian's child and history enthusiast, it's really cool to see and create such connections!

When I teach symbiosis to my students, I tell them that it is not always clear cut what kind of symbiosis is happening. The relationship may be more complicated than you think. Those birds picking ticks off of cattle may not really be helping very much. They generally only pick off ticks that are already engorged, and they often pick at open wounds (and have even been seen to lap blood from the wounds). It is completely possible for a species to both help and harm another, so how do you weigh whether there is an over-all benefit or harm being done? Nature doesn't always fit into the boxes we make to try to categorize things. Maybe it is better to think of symbiosis as a spectrum.

I don't know if it's because I can't explain things as good as you (I'm no biologist, and speak german only since 7 years or so) or if they're dense... It is a totally misconstrued talking point that creation believers have. And if they don't want to learn what evolution actually says, don't debate them.

Ask them if they think their cousin is their parent. If they say their cousin is still human, respond with something like this: theyre still genetically different than you. And the further away someone is relations, the more genetically different they are likely to be, and at a certain point, that genetic difference can become a reproductive barrier, and hence, some you are related to are different species entirely, and some of those species are species of monkey, and indeed, go far enough, and you'll find every living thing in your family tree, because almost every facet of life is mutable.
Hopefully thatll help, idk. It may be that they need a bottom to top primer on biology to have the basis to understand just how mutable biology is at all.

I don't listen to anything either produce anymore --- I sort of forgot to keep tabs on what Tarja makes, and at a certain point, Nightwish music started seeming to me to be obnoxious earworms with a weird folksy element, (though I somewhat suspect my issue with the last of their music I heard was maybe neurological --- I'm on the spectrum and given I find some things taste bitter to me and not to others, its possible theres something similar going on with my taste in music.) But Floor is not the problem I have with modern Nightwish, personally.

They started just making covers of music in a kind of boring style, I want to call it "generic metal" or maybe "generic metal" but I'm not sure thats accurate, and its generally songs I never liked in the first place and the improvements they make seem trivial to me.

Yet, he would still come across morons like @R L and others who spend their days commenting on their religious dogma. These people are genuinely sick in the head--mentally ill.
Being religious should not prevent a person from seeking the real truth. Belief in a god--or many gods--is normal and natural at the expense of your critical thinking. Once religion dies out(It's already happening) I think that we as a species will benefit greatly. Nearly all crisis's humans have experienced were caused by religious people.

A Question: How can we know a single LUCA existed and not multiple different Common Ancestors which might not be Ancestors of all living things. After all we know not living things can combine into living things. We can even recreate it in Labs. So we know it happened more than once. How can we be sure a single "kind" of organism came into existence and not two. Then some life could have LUCA A as an Ancestors and other life forms LUCA B as an Ancestor.

    • @dino_drawings
      @dino_drawings Рік тому

Because all life has similar genes.
If there were multiple “original organisms” we would see that those from A have completely different genes from B, if I’m not mistaken.

    • @loreguru3083
      @loreguru3083 Рік тому +1

@@dino_drawings This. While there could have been multiple "LUCA" events given the size of the planet and how many potential hotbeds and other areas of the earth were (and still are) right for the start of life, the life that we see has *very* strong markers for a single common ancestor that everything else deviated from.
Likely, any other LUCA class species that existed couldn't evolve when their environment shifted (the volcanic vent they evolved in erupted far more violently than their structure could handle or cooled, levels of chemical saturation shifted to no longer be favorable, etc), never underwent any major changes for whatever reason and simply didn't evolve new organisms, were out-competed by another species and went extinct, or simply never left that primordial niche and exist only within the absolute most remote and inhospitable (for us and most of life) places in the deepest of oceans.
And *if* they still exist, any evolutionary offshoots of other potential LUCA species that might branch out would likely find (and have found) whatever niche they had been pushing towards already occupied by multiple other species that were already competing for those resources, leaving this offshoot little to work with and ultimately driving them to extinction. Like a copper mine attempting to establish a dig site in an area that's already been stripped down to the earth's crust, or a farmer attempting to plant crops in fields already tilled and filled with apple orchards by a global megacorp: They're a bit late to the party, there isn't any room left for them, they don't have tools to compete with the dominant existing species in the area, and that's going to drive them away. But unlike the company analogies, these species don't have the option to move to a new location. If they can't make it work in their initial environment, they simply die out.
So yeah. Admittedly a lot of speculation there what with all the "likely"s and "potentially"s and such, but hopefully it gets the point across. Yes, there *could* have been multiple LUCA's, *but* our current understanding of genetics shows that the life that we can currently interact with and study points to that life having a single common ancestor. Those other LUCA's simply didn't branch out or survive for one of a massive variety of reasons.
