I think it's genuinely Fernando's drive and enthusiasm about driving a podium-capable car that rubbed off on Lewis and motivated him to be there with his old rival. It seemed in Australia, when they first stood on podium as three champions, that something clicked in Lewis' head and he realized that it's actually really fulfilling to be there with the other two, and now he's again motivated to give his best and to stay there, even if he doesn't have a shot at winning on pure pace.

    • @e.1067

I mean, this is a wholesome take but imo it has more to do with the new upgrades merc has brought in. In the races before monaco, lewis was in a car he did not trust and one he actively protested against. Although i am sure he also got motivation from alonso's drive(i genuinely dont think lewis sees anyone outside of max and alonso as his rivals like no other driver in the current grid can make him think "i want to beat him") i think the much bigger portion of his jump in performance is that the car has improved and the other teams have drivers and strategy departments making mistakes left and right.
Edit: okay to not be misunderstood, i'm not saying that lewis looks better only bc the car got better. What i mean is, he's able to push more because he trusts the car more, and because he knows he can drag the car to better places, and unlike most drivers he knows the limits of himself and the race enough to not make too many crucial mistakes.

So much of the talent he developed was training and skill he was taught by a professional. And he took advantage of that to become one the greatest drivers of all time. But it does make his story and achievements less remarkable than someone like Lewis who is became the most successful driver of all time coming from a more humble background. The thing with Max is that no matter what happens on track, whether someone chrashes and the session ends early, or the conditions are very bad, he is always there. The on track events might help someone else, but Max is still there around the top(for exmple Brazil 22' quali). Also often in Q1s and Q2s, Sergio is like 7, 8, even further down, Max is just consistently at the top, pretty much no matter who and when made his lap and what session is. Yeah, you don't really need to be the fastest in Q1/2 and the Practices, but Max just naturally has the consistent pace no matter what happens around him, and this certainly help when it really comes to maximum pushing.

All three of these phenomenal drivers wiped the floor with their team-mates this weekend, in different ways. This is a true statement of how these guys are just a cut above everyone else on the grid.
Not that there aren't really promising and quality young drivers on the grid who COULD be this good at some point (Norris, Russell, Leclerc, Albon etc) - but at the moment there is no competition.
Two of the greatest drivers of all time still performing at the highest level despite being in the later years of their careers, and a guy (Max) who will most definitely be up there by the end of his career (he's already matched Senna).
    Edit:
Just to add, I say "wiped the floor with their teammates" because that did happen this weekend, but there is an easy ranking of how good their teammates are relative to them.
1: George - by far and away the best of the three. Makes some stupid mistakes but beat Lewis last year (even if he did have favourable conditions), and very close to him this year. Like him or not, to go toe to toe with Hamilton at Merc is no easy feat, so he deserves plaudits.
2: Checo - Still good, but seems to be getting worse. Could be in danger if he continues to perform sub-par
3: Lance - I don't need to explain this one, he's a lovely guy but he is easily the worst driver to be in F1 for this long in a while.

Canada 2023 showed that even though in F1 it is 90-95% car, the really greats make a huge difference with the remaining gap. All 3 demonstrated it beautifully and in a commanding way. Checo and Stroll are just not that good. And Russell while far better in talent than Checo and Stroll, still has a long time to go to learn how to adapt to pressure.
And this result shows again that imo Leclerc will probably never be a champ or maybe 1 championship at best (provided everything falls into place). He isn't ruthless enough. Carlos clearly rejected the team's strategy but Charles does nt have that selfish/ruthless streak. In his 6th year in F1 and 5th at Ferrari, he still isn't the leader there. A champion driver should first dominate his teammate and team and dictate terms but he i incapable of it. Unless the car, strategy, and lack of competition fall into place he will not be champ. And these 3 (Max, Alonso, Lewis) have never made so many mistakes consistently. Max has improved SO much in just 3 years, it is frightening.

McLaren, one of the best stories on the grid imo, starting as an owner-driver team and evolving into the host for multiple legends of the sport. Mercedes pulling out of racing all together only to come back with a fierce passion and show the world they can build a race car in ANY category they enter. Ferrari, the darling of Motorsport. Known for their sheer tenacity and grit, their undying commitment even when they fall. Williams, with their troubled start and eventual leap to success, only to return to the back of the grid and rebuild. This is more than racing. @@deacon6638 no, but if we aren’t considering them WC material, we shouldn’t be so quick to call someone who’s had multiple opportunities to win races (Spa, Monza, Russia) WC material either. Right now, I don’t think we’ve seen anything from Lando that we haven’t seen from drivers who never managed to win the title either-Bottas and Perez were lethal in the midfield before they got championship level cars.

Don't know if I necessarily agree with the Leclrec take. I think Ferrari's been at fault for about 90-95%, and for Leclerc to be doing so well last year for the championship only for his team to ruin his efforts takes a toll on him. If you look into the stats, he's has 3 accidents since 2019 yet people are saying he's accident prone. Meanwhile, Ferrari are constantly ruining his pole positions, pit stops, and making unreliable cars. I don't even think giving Leclerc giving a red bull is needed to win the championship last year, all he needed was at least a decent strategy and engineering team.

8:40 while you have to admit that Charles has that raw speed and talent and is able to out drive the car,you have to admit that he is crash prone. You have to take into consideration the car and the circumstances he is crash prone. He is able to pull out a result in inferior cars but he is often crashing the car, this is frustrating because he has the talent but unlike max he is unable to constantly stay on the limit and not crash.

I think on raw talent, Alonso is better than Hamilton. He could've won way more titles. In terms of skill, this podium was unequal. Driving is second nature to these legends. Watching TV while you're driving over 300 kph. LeClerc makes too many mistakes and doesn't have the guts to demand the tires he wants. Sainz actually dictates to the team what he wants.

Did anyone notice that the top 9 did not change from lap 12 to the checkered flag. Albon did a great job to get to p7 by lap 12. He was able to hold the field of mainly because now with aero upgrades no one can pass. People act like Allonzo in Hamilton really had a fight and claw to get p2 and p3 when they were 12 seconds apart even back to the Ferraris. Also, as a Leclerc fan, and I’m so happy that Ferraris “brilliant” strategy didn’t lose them any spots because they were already 15 seconds up the road. And they were able to get there by like 12 because everyone crashed basically.

you have to remember these 3 are probably the 3 best drivers there’s ever been. Alonso is super underrated but the most competitive and passionate driver and has not slipped of his prime and always deserved more. Max has unmistakable speed and racing IQ, he’s is in a class of his own in terms of speed and talent right now. And though i’m not a Lewis fan he can be very consistent and will give his all to challenge at the highest level, he’s good at every aspect with little weaknesses able to put pressure on the best of driver at any chance
