All legendary drivers, but none have had the misfortune that Fernando has had. Taking the title fight to the last race in 2007, 2010 and 2012 is something that very few drivers are capable of. The longer Fernando drives, the less the numbers seem to matter, and the more his on-track performance speaks to how mighty he is. Two championships is not nothing. Jim Clark had two. He's always been my F1 hero... I'm 21 years old now and as an Italian, I naturally grew up watching him when he was driving for Ferrari and fighting alone against his ass cars and both RedBull and McLaren and his sudden "retirement" in 2018 really hit me emotionally, especially considering how bad McLaren was going. To see him enjoying those last years of his F1 career this much while also still showing his immortal masterclass gives me a joy that goes beyond mere words. I really hope he can get one last victory, because I'm sure that if it ever happens, I'd be the happiest guy alive, maybe even more than Nando himself😂

What blows my mind is that he was still competitve after leaving the sport and returning back, at an old age. Hamilton being competitive at old ages isn't as impressive as Alonso as Hamilton stayed in the sport, with the same team so can carry that momentum into his 40s.

    Spot on
I started watching F1 in 2010 as a kid, but from 2016 I watch it more closly, not just "I watch it"
For me Fernando was a former champion, he was there like Kimi, but didn't delivered results and was a toxic people as rumors said, he always wanted to be the team leader, but team radios didn't reflected to that.
When he retired, I was just OK, we are probably don't see him anymore.
Comeback - I also thought why sign an old driver who surrounded by so much trouble.
His podium in Qatar showed me he still worthy for F1, but this 2023 his true talent

till this day I still laugh at the comments back in 2020 saying Renault should promote the likes of Lungaard or Zhou (no disrespect, they're really solid drivers) instead of Alonso, I think that happened because of some fans perception on older drivers coming back will be more like Schumacer at Mercedes in 2010-2012 than what Alonso and to a greater extent Hulkenberg is doing today

People criticized Fernando for lots of things other drivers have done but somehow when it's Fernando it's always been worse. Lewis would have a meltdown and Seb would be a husk of himself in that McLaren - Honda car. He could've done better? Yes, but it feels like he got a lot more shit than others would have because he is such a polarizing figure in F1. Plus come on, his radios were amazing, the engine feels good radio is hilarious.
So I am of course really happy he is just up there again. Because I always believed in him. Believed in him through Ferrari, through McLaren, and believed in him through his comeback of course. I always knew he was one of the all time greats, but I can't deny I am really happy that it seems like he has ended the debate and he is finally getting the recognition he deserves. It felt like even though he is a two time world champion he was still underrated LMAO.

Alonso is simply an animal! People forget that after his clash with Hamilton at McLaren, he has always had inferrior cars. His second stint at Renault, Ferrari, McLaren, Alpine all of them provided him with cars that were nog good enough or just terrible. He took wins with cars that didn't deserve them and finished with cars on spots where they didn't deserve to be.
I think he silenced a lot of critics now that he's at Aston Martin. I'm wondering if he could take on Hamilton had he been in that Ferrari in 2017/2018? Had he been in Webber's seat, could he beat Vettel? Looking back I see Alonso as being very similar to Max Verstappen. A massive talent who demands the best of his team. This makes them quite the handful. I do hope he wins another title, he would definitely deserve it.

The fact that he got 2nd place in the standings with Ferrari thrice I value very much. Almost as much as his championships with Renault.

This makes him greater than the single discipline paper greats. MSC won in prototypes and Le Mans, VER is a E-Sports champoin, and will most likely go on to other Formulas in future….these re things that make greats. Not only championship numbers.
This is why drivers of the 50s to 70’s can be greats with only single championships….because they RACED, and raced EVERYTHING….sometimes on the same day!
