We are somehow connected with the Scottish culture and interestingly our school band is famous just because of Scottish bagpipes. Profoundly grateful to be able to live it. Thank you for showing us wonderful Scottish highlands. ❣️🌈
From Canada & have toured Scotland 3 times. In April 2019 we scattered my wifes Scottish Moms ashes at Dunrobin Castle then toured The Highlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow etc. Had our 53RD Anniversary while there & had a terrific time. 3 restaurants & 2 hotels gave us free comps when we mentioned it was our anniversary trip!! EG: 2 free breakfasts, 2 classes of champagne, bottle of wine, truffles, desserts etc The Glasgow hotel gave us a violin case full of numerous snacks & beverages. AWESOME & FRIENDLY VISIT.
You might be interested to know that some survivors of the massacre of Glencoe left Scotland for good and went to America. There they fell in with the Sioux and enjoyed (if that's the right term) their way of life enough to stay with them. There they fell victims to another massacre at Wounded Knee. The details of this little-known piece of history can be found in the book, "Glen Coe and the Indians," written by James Hunter.
@ National museum is incredible. The problem with the museums in London is if you want to see something like swords there are 5,000 or more? One could spend a month just looking at them. Overwhelming. Do the same in Scotland and the museums have 20 or 30 or about the right number to look at. The castles are incredible. After several days one gets castled out. There are just so many of them. Same with churches. They are incredible. But after visiting castle after castle or church after church one begins to realize they are were all built with my castle/church is better than yours because...... (fill in the blank.) Ours is bigger, taller, older, has more windows, more stained glass oldest bible, largest altar, most painting..... One soon begins to realizes it was soft of the nuclear arms race of the era. One thing I found was really cleaver were castles or manor houses with sword steps. Brilliant

I was born in Melbourne, Florida in 1987 but even though I have lived all my life in the United States (I am age 37 now), there is a primal urge welling up deep inside me to go and visit Scotland because I know it is the land of my ancestors and I guess I want to have that connection to my ancestors.
I lived on the other side of the country at RAF Edzell in 63-65, 74-75 and 80-83. Scotland is the most beautiful place on earth! CWO4 (Cryptology), USN, Retired, 73-95.
You are correct, it is the most beautiful place on Earth. I come from Edzell, now live in England. I'm part of the Pictish diaspora, you know, the people who inhabited the North-East part of Britain before the Scots took over. The Eastern side of Scotland is often overlooked, as it stands in the shadow of the more dramatic Western Highlands but you've only got to visit the glens of Angus to know that you are in God's own country.
I come from Greece and this is the first place I want to go abroad. It is such a beautiful and wild place... and it's culture... I hope I go as soon as possible...
I visited the highlands in the 1966/7/8/90s great walks castles, locks towns and loved waking on Sky good times watch the mug bits in July. The walks strenuous and exhilarating Pennines.way was niice a long distance footpath which I was able to complete in the 1”970s.great tour.
Thank you Rick Steves for your videos of the Highlands and of the Islands and Norway. My ancestors came from those beautiful places to America and some to Canada, Ireland, Australia. They left in order to survive. They were sons of Mac Eanurig (Henry) (Henderson, and it’s variations.) and married women of the MacDonald clan after the Scottish King “gave” Glencoe to to the MacDonald of Skye. Marrying was preferable to fighting. Two son’s of Mac Eanurig survived the Glencoe massacre and traveled North East and then to Orkney Isle and one married a Norse lady there. After Culloden, family members filtered to the lowlands, those with Mac Donald last names often switching to Henderson to stay alive, lived in areas in the Lowlands until they were able to go to Ireland and to Canada, Nova Scotia, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa or America. We are a scattered bunch, but we survived. I was happy to hear a couple of years ago, that the head of the Campbell Clan finally found it in his heart to apologize for what his ancestors did to ours in Glencoe. A terrible thing done can maybe now finally be healed for MacDonald’s and Henderson’s! 🤗
Pat TheHombre.its changing though pat..😦, scotland is being overrun with tourists, depends on where you go..edinburgh will always welcome tourists..because the town centre is generally full of non scots..ie..english. and the old eastern bloc..
@@johngr9963 : can I ask you why you think the country has changed that much?. With the majority of people having more 'disposable cash' it's understandable tourism has increased, but has immigration (old Eastern bloc citizens) really changed the Scots outlook?. I always thought the Scots were far more tolerant than their southern neighbors. England seems to have an issue, which according to what I read, is an issue of non stop immigration and all of them being given 'free stuff'... housing, education, medical services, etc and etc.
I visited the Highlands last week and they are truly stunning! Thanks Rick for the inspiration. Just a note to say that there is a lot of work going on at Fort Augustus on the canal but it was still lovely to visit. From there we took the A82 to Glencoe Valley which was unbelievably beautiful. Can't wait to go back.
I live in England, the West Midlands, but have never been to Scotland. The fact it is 235 miles to the nearest town, Gretna Green, has something to do with it, the logistics are a little daunting. But once the pandemic has died down I hope to finally make the trip to Edinburgh and the Highlands. Thanks Rick for so many amazing travelogues!
This was a great travelogue. It revived our memories of a road trip by car through the Highlands, seeing the many waterfalls cascading down the steep hillsides as we traveled to our destination-Eilandonan Castle, “St. Donan’s Isle.” home of our clan. You photographed it from 3:27 to 3:42. I’m so glad you showed the sheep dogs at work . In the United States you can look for Highland Games every year, and will again when the pandemic is ended.
I loved visiting Scotland but always be prepared for rain and misty weather. The same is true for Ireland but the Scottish highlands are so beautiful when the heather is blooming.
IAM from India and always wathching your videos.I am a big lover of nature. Europe is nature's paradise for me.I am always willing to visit Europe at least once in a lifetime.
I loved every moment of this episode. It was fascinating to see how my Scottish ancestors lived in the Highlands. So much awesome information. Love it.
I just visited Scotland's Highlands. It's breathtaking. I also love the scenes of this season as you can still see some snow. You can also tell how Scottish people, especially a fantastic bus tour guide, are proud of their land and culture.
About Scotland I read in my matric school . Teachers taught us about highland region there are also some pics of green mountains and lakes. Many time we student talk about this heaven country that we must go there one time in our life. From our country there are many obstacles to get visa for this country like bank statments taxes etc. Now its dream only for me to visit there but thanx your you tube channel who give the energetic videos. I have no roots in Scotland, I'm half Italian and half Puerto Rican but the history, people, music, pubs and landscape is something that I'm in love with.
Im from Turkey and i just want to say scotland's highlands deserves more tourist than paris.People just going to paris for what? His boring museums and just for eiffel tower😐 Scotland with his rich culture and forests, myths, musics plus too many things. I love you scotland you are my second country 👍
I'm planning a 2-week visit in either 2020 or 2021. One curiosity at the Culloden memorial: There are flowers and other mementos left at the clan markers, but one clan's stone is always heavily decorated-Clan MacKenzie, thanks to the Outlander TV series. I first learned about Culloden and the Clearances from that show, and have gone on to learn much more of Scottish history as a result. Fascinating and sad.
Samee here i fell in love with Scotland and Scottish history from the outlander series and now i know Scottish history more than i know my own country's history 😂 though it made me hate England for what they have done through the centuries to Scotland and to the Scottish culture😔
I also want to visit Culloden. I first saw and heard of it in the series Highlander in the 90s. But my calling to go there comes from something older. Bummer is that Scotland is quite vast and other places of interest long ways from Inverness area.
Wow...what a beautiful place...im from india and wish to visit uk atleast once in my lifetime....the nature is so.beautiful ,the lushy green mountains and place is so calm.....

It is amazing that there are no trees in the mountains and they are covered with moss. I don't know Scottish history and Jacobite at all. But the Battle of Culloden in 1746 seems miserable to me. So sad. Anyway, Thank you Rick for sharing your great masterpiece video. It's perfect.

I was born in Melbourne, Florida in 1987 but even though I have lived all my life in the United States (I am age 37 now), there is a primal urge welling up deep inside me to go and visit Scotland because I know it is the land of my ancestors and I guess I want to have that connection to my ancestors.
I"m incredibly jealous!!! My brother went there for work and came back and said he had such a great time. I wanna go!!
where are you waiting for then
What a beautiful country, really want to visit someday soon! 😀
Hope you're having a wonderful day?
I'm going to Athens in march this year! hope to see you
I visited the highlands in the 1966/7/8/90s great walks castles, locks towns and loved waking on Sky good times watch the mug bits in July.
This whole video looks like a beautiful painting. I want to visit scotland at least once in my life.
One extremely beautiful country and it's people are so welcoming.
Pat TheHombre.its changing though pat..😦,
scotland is being overrun with tourists, depends on where you go..edinburgh will always welcome tourists..because the town centre is generally full of non scots..ie..english. and the old eastern bloc..
I've watched numerous videos on this specific content and I've got to say the way you tell a story makes for a wonderful video and viewing!!!
This video made me cry with its showcasing of Scotland's beauty and history. Thank you so much.
agreed.
Visited in June 2017.Scotland is a land of mountain wildernesses, Amazing and very peaceful .
` The logistics are a little daunting` ? Hop on a train or coach and you`ll be in Scotland in next to no time. We`re not living in the dark ages.
It is so worth it, you won't regret it
Thanks again, Rick Steves, for taking me to places far away. Way cheaper than an airline ticket.
I'm watching Outlander and I'm just in loooove with the Scottish culture. Everything in that country is so beautiful and amazing!!
Hello 👋 Ana.
Ana luiza
Scotland is a beautiful place to visit and know about there culture. Beautiful view and natural, Local folk.
I'd love to live on those highlands. It'll be so peaceful
My husband and I have been to Scotland ONCE for our 25th Anniversary, can't afford to go back. Miss seeing it again everyday.
I lived in Edinburgh about 8 months and I loved it. I am visiting it whenever I travel to Europe. Great video.
Hello 👋👋
I loved every moment of this episode. It was fascinating to see how my Scottish ancestors lived in the Highlands. So much awesome information. Love it.
Would that be clan maczoppa?

"For many this is an emotional visit". I got emotional just watching that part of the video! I will go to Scotland some day... maybe even live there!
Absolutely the same :( that's so terrible that such gorgeous and outstanding land keeps such a bad story of massacre...
I hope you do get the chance you won't be disappointed
Thanx
We love your shows and have probably watched every episode. You have become a part of the family :) Thank you for taking us to every corner of Europe!
Very interesting video portraying a lot of Scotland´s vast nature, culture and history! I´m born and raised Norwegian but 1/12 Scottish on my mother´s side and this video definitely makes me proud of my Scottish roots! 🏴😍
We have many ties throughout history the norse and the french are the only 2 countries we have had alliances with except Ireland and England of course
It's a most beautiful place full of history, myths, legends ❤
Really beautiful dear.
Nice 👍 too meet you here.
I have no roots in Scotland, I'm half Italian and half Puerto Rican but the history, people, music, pubs and landscape is something that I'm in love with.
Very,, very beautiful , incredible nice.. Greetings from Germany..

Im from Turkey and i just want to say scotland's highlands deserves more tourist than paris.People just going to paris for what? His boring museums and just for eiffel tower😐 Scotland with his rich culture and forests, myths, musics plus too many things. I love you scotland you are my second country 👍
Hi melih my friend, I'm from Scotland I visited your country ten years ago. Icemeler, it was very beautiful
I'll take that advice. Sounds wonderful ans mystical.
@vds probably you are french. 🏳
Last time I was there, They were just starting to excavate the grounds for the new interpretive center, which I hear is fabulous. Enjoy.
MacKenzie is a local clan
Wow...what a beautiful place...im from india and wish to visit uk atleast once in my lifetime....the nature is so.beautiful ,the lushy green mountains and place is so calm.....
Since watching Outlander, I'm enthralled with this beautiful land and history.. Since watching Outlander, I'm enthralled with this beautiful land and history..
i wish i can visit Scotland this year.. a beautiful country to live
My great grandmother, Mary MacDonald, was descended from one of the survivors of the Campbell massacre at Toriam Castle. The family fled to Nova Scotia in the late 1780s and settled in Williams Point (Southside Harbor). My great grandmother's side married into the Campbell, MacLeod, Morgan, and MacKinnon families.
Wayne Johnson the Campbell’s you sure ?
@@keithlordofalbascotland3371 Yes. It's well documented. We have Campbells in my family tree too. I have no reason to lie.
The country is exuberant, enchant my eyes, it's beatifull place. Ladascape perfect.
Love the Scottish Highlands. Part of the reason that I learnt to play the bagpipes. Great video, thanks

@@dianacasey6002 how wonderful. Have you been back since? I first went at 18 and like you I felt I'd gone to heaven. Scotland is calling me I must go!
Take me with you. My heart skipped beats looking at this documentary. I would never leave there if I could go. It's the most beautiful place in the world to me.
Yes you definitely must being a Stewart. Go not far from Perth your family seat (aka the place where your clan comes from) and start your visit from there. Enjoy.
O Danni Boi!
definitely you must go. Do you enjoy the sound of the bagpipes? They really evoke the mood of Scotland for me
It looks like a beautiful country.
My family and I traveled through England, Scotland, and Wales when I was 7. When we got to Loch Ness, I was on the lookout for the monster. I didn't see Nessie that day but I still believed he was there.
Nessie is widely considered to be female
Anna C. Sahlstrom .......nessie can be seen when you least expect her :)
No such things as lochness monster😂
Frank Eeee ....... oach shoosht you.........we all know nessie is real and brings alot of tourism too
Anna C. Sahlstrom usually pops in the tourist season for a photo shoot .
Scotland is amazing. The US Navy sent me there a few times and I enjoyed every minute of it.
Three cheers for Dunoon.
Really appreciate your show. Brought tears to my eyes even though I'm not Scottish.
Looking through the comments, I seem to be the only Scot still residing in Scotland, in Beautiful Perthshire Haste ye back! 🏴
How is it in the Highlands? Seriously I am English and wouldn’t set foot in Glasgow if you paid me (I won’t go where I am hated because I am English) but would love to go back to Scotland. Love Edinburgh but will give it a miss also, but as I haven’t been up-to Aberdeen or Inverness I would love to visit.
@@leigh-mariehamilton3361 I do not know what prompted your Highlands comment ... but,

Hello 👋👋
Scotland is a dream for me! I live in the middle of the French Alps but I dream to come and live several years in Scotland, just to see...
Among all of travel bloggers you are the best. Love and best wishes for you.
Mily Nill just fyi, Rick Steves is not a blogger. He has his own travel show
hi rick, i love seeing you in europe back when youtube was not full of travel videos yet. your job means a great deal to me and im very grateful for that.
I loove rick. His vlogs are just so full of joy and fortunately clean. Sumthing you can enjoy during meal. Feels like a date
I have been here last month.... it’s a very beautiful place☺️☺️☺️
8:18 The Massacre of Glen Coe was one of two real-life inspirations used in the "Red Wedding" Episode of GoT.
No way, that's really cool. I didn't know that and I'm Scottish and a close descendant of Clan Campbell!
You sound really proud to be a back stabber
The massacre of Glencoe (one word) was a bairn's tea party compared to the 200+ Lamonts that were slaughtered by the Campbells in 1646 (yes, I am a Lamont).
@@tsarnicholasii274 they massacred and backstabbed all Celts pretty much
The Scots were great at killing other Scots.
