This is exceptionally good. As a former resident and regular visitor I know the city very well. Not only did you do a fine job of covering many of the key points (too bad about Leith...) but you articulated and clarified everything so well. 🙏⭐👍 One thing I always suggest to visitors is that they 'do' the High Street and shopping spots on Princes and George streets, then explore residential areas including the New Town, the Grange, Stockbridge and Bruntsfield (the latter two are villages with great eats and independent shops etc.). All are within walking distance of the Royal Mile. There is also the village of Portobello (take a bus) with its beach promenade (Shirley Manson, singer of band Garbage has a home down here; her family home is just minutes walk from the Scran & Scallie in Stockbridge). Of course there is so much more, which is why you must return. Maybe and Edinburgh and Glasgow (45 mins. by train) video would be a winner. Once again, a fine job.
Thank you so much for your kind words and suggestions! I certainly plan to return to Scotland. There is so much more of this beautiful country I’d love to explore. :)
Hello @MrCherryJuice, Do you have anywhere you can suggest to stay during the very busy time of the Tattoo and the Fringe festival? I am thinking out of town along a train or bus line but not sure if there are some prettier places you may suggest over others? I'm finding, even a year in advance that it is really expensive to stay in the City itself though I wish we could especially as we're going to the Tattoo. We're Celebrating our 40th wedding Anniversary, though we are fit 😁Thank you for any help 🙏
@@Geblues10Thank you for asking. I am shocked to see prices during festival times. Some are ludicrous. The Festival is a worthy attraction, for sure. But it is, in terms of tourist density and inconvenience, the worst time to be there. You didn't suggest what constitutes 'really expensive' nor how many days or what days you would like to be there. So I have arbitrarily searched for 4 days in the middle of August. The place linked here is on Queen Street in the New Town, right in the city centre, though not in the centre of the action. Though Queen Street is a primary route, across the street are private gardens for the full length. And and from this location you can walk down the hill to Dean Village, Stockbridge, the Galleries of Modern Art, the Water of Leith Walkway and the Botanical Gardens...as well as the streets of the fabulous New Town. I LOVE this part of the city. You mention the possibility of staying outside the city centre, though even then some pricing is ridiculous. WOW! I am planning a solo trip to Scotland for September 2025 and this is the best video I have found. I am a very visual learner and deal with a LOT of travel anxiety and over planning. I love how you included maps. Very well made video for an anxious, but excited, tourist like me!
Thank you! This comment actually means a lot! I don’t have too much travel anxiety, which is probably because I like to understand as much about where I’m going as possible. Making these maps for myself in advance and understanding the general layout has always helped me feel confident about where I’m going. Enjoy your solo trip! Edinburgh is a blast to explore. :)
Used to work in Edinburgh and I love the place, it really is a beautiful city with very friendly people. Visiting this weekend with my partner who has never been, I can't wait to see her enjoy it for herself.
Even though I watched this AFTER my trip to Edinburgh, I still found it very interesting. Regarding Edinburgh Castle, as the video said, she went late in the day and it was crowded. I went for the first time slot of the day, and it was great. In general if you can, for many of the attractions (Britannia, Holyrood Palace, etc.) needing timed tickets, go as early as you can. Great video! Thank you!
Great video. As a resident I wholly approve of your restaurant choices. The Scarn and Scallie is a cut above any other Edinburgh pub food and still quite reasonable. Witchery is also awesome but seriously decadent. If you go back check out more pubs on the Shore in Leith near Britannia. Loads of nice pubs with good food and friendly locals.
Thank you! Yes - I would love to go back and explore more of Leith! The walk out that way was fantastic, but I definitely didn’t give myself enough time to really see that area (other than Britannia). It’s high on my list next time I’m there. :)
Thanks Ashley for the excellent review of Edinburgh Scotland! Once again you really brought a delightful view through great cinematography & commentary of this amazing location. Your reviews have helped me enjoy incredible destinations in the past and continue to inspire. There are too many locations in your Edinburgh review to pick a favorite. I did especially enjoy your early morning walk through the royal mile and amazing last dinner spot! Really appreciate your content! Best Always.....Bob V
Enjoyed this video. I'll be visiting Edinburg for the first time next year. Unfortunately, it will be in June...yikes! It will only be for 3.5 days before I attend a wedding 2 hrs south of Edinburg then to London for 2 days. I'm developing a 3 day itinerary and your trip has given ideas. Thank you.

Fellow travel creator. Great video. So much to do. I was there in college about 20 years ago and loved my time there. Can’t wait to get back! Omg that last restaurant was epic.
Just got back from Edinburgh two days ago myself. From someone who has never traveled, or even been on a place prior, there were a few things that surprised me. I read / watched a ton of videos on how to survive there as a tourist and one of the biggest things I read about was the lack of public bathrooms. I stayed there a week and never ran into that issue. Almost every store, gas station, pub had them. Some though, require you to make a purchase to use since they're for customers only, but being from the US, that's how it is here, so nothing new to me. Don't worry about having a place to go. If you're wondering if you should rent a car, I highly recommend against it. The parking situation in Edinburgh is an absolute nightmare and I wasn't even there during tourist season. I used the taxi service and Uber to get around to places that were too far to walk and that was just fine. Another thing I read and heard about before going was to try to use a card instead of cash, which made no sense to me. Money is money. They accept cash there, but be prepared to be turned down if it's not coins. At least last week, most stores told me there's a serious coin shortage so they can't make change on bills. One thing I did that wasn't mentioned, was the Edinburgh Zoo. I did that on a whim and was so impressed. The animals were so well taken care of with so much space, and the entire zoo is on a massive hill that overlooks Edinburgh. It was worth every penny. Also, try the haggis. :)
Thank you so much for this! I’m sure it will help others as they plan their trips! The zoo was on my radar, but I ran out of time! Glad you enjoyed it, though. I’ll have to get to it on my next visit.
This is by far the best video on Edinburgh, I've seen. Thank you so much for the details of food, walks, crowds & how to avoid them. I shall be visiting Edinburgh October through January ( not the best time....but)....and I am definitely going to check out all that you've mentioned....
Highly recommend Edinburgh. Would love to go back to explore more and then, of course, visit other areas of the country as well! A highlands road trip is up there on my list. :)
Some feedback fron an ex-Edinburgher. Anyone can do Calton Hill and it has sensational views. Arthurs Seat is not for the faint hearted and to be avoided on wet days. Take a bus from city centre to Silverknowes for an amazing sea front walk with great views across to Fife. A really chill way to spend half a day. So relaxing. Do the walk from the west end of Princes St down thru Dean Village and onto Botanical Gardens. On a sunny day it's wonderful. PS I really enjoyed the viedo - but well done if you can afford to stay at the George Hotel. ££££££
Dear Lady, that was an exceptionally well done video. The videography and commentary were absolutely splendid. I plan to take advantage of your largess during my travels to Edinburgh in 2025. Cheers!
This was a great video, very informative with more than just your tourist spots. Thank you so much for your time in making this. I'll have another look when I've got more time to digest it more fully.
Glasgow is a lovely city architecturally, albeit, Edinburgh IMPHO, is much nicer, but yes, a bit on the "very rough" side for sure!! lol Edinburgh is fine. I have visited prior, but not for many years now, so I look forward to heading back there some day soon.
Wow, Thank you for the many tips. I love Edinburgh & I await my time there. A really lovely city for sure. The funniest part for me however, is that as a "large" part Scot, I don't like Whisky & I don't drink it, albeit, I do love it added in ice-cream & cakes etc;. I know it's then cooked out to some degree, so obviously not @ all the same quality/taste. I guess I just cannot appreciate something so refined. lol On the other hand, I'm crazy about Bailey's Irish liqueur however! Thank you for sharing & Peace✌
august fly 19th land 20th back out on saturday - have it all planned down to the minute. good video. we travel like this all the time. usually 4 days is sufficient to see a portion of the great places around the world.
I have been there and I hope the cannon shot at one in the afternoon didn’t scare you to much. During the tour they show you where queen mary of Scott’s first husband was killed and it also told of the room where James the first and sixth was born. I love Edinburgh it didn’t feel like a big city. So much history and the whiskey heritage museum was n the Royal mile not to far from Edinburgh castle it’s cool you get shown the history of scotch and after the history of whiskey you got a free dram. I’m not sure if that’s still there but it was a fun time!
Ya know what? I've been to beautiful Edinburgh 8 times and your video has me making MUST SEE notes for my 9th trip. Thanks so much! P.S. The Royal Yacht Britannia has a lovely 'tea room' cafe for an after-tour experience. Bus service in Edinburgh is excellent and certainly goes out to Leith. And oops, yes. The Waters of Leith is meant to be picturesque and memorable. Thanks again!
Jealous that you’ve been almost 9 times! The tea service onboard the Britannia is definitely one I’d love to try out when I’m back! (And yes… Leith deserves a 2nd attempt on my part haha!)
Live in Glasgow .I'm 🏴 Scottish. Edinburgh is a wonderful city .You missed out in the Johnnie Walker experience on Princess Street. Absolutely brilliant. Your coverage was excellent. "Why didn't you try haggis ",😂 SLANJ
Thanks for the comment! I will have to check out the Johnnie Walker experience the next time around. And I loved the haggis. I think anything served in a meatball format will taste good to me. 😂
@@akfasso I'll be in Edinburgh in mid October, I wonder if your itinerary is doable for me, especially since I think you did a lot of walking? I'm not the best walker 😆
@trishr7463 sounds like a lovely time to visit! I did do quite a lot of walking, but all of the destinations I visited are easily accessible by bus, as well. I even took a cab one night to dinner. :) Enjoy!
Wait, what! No Smoked Scottish Salmon? You also missed out on the oldest still functioning White Hart Inn, est; 1516. Robbie Burns frequented the tavern.
3 days is not enough but you seems to have done quite a bit, well done, a point though after you left the Botanical Gardens you didn't connect with the Waters of Leith walkway in your video, that was one of the old tram lines, now national cycle route 75.
Thank you for clarifying that! I was following the signage pointing to the Water of Leith and wasn’t sure if I was actually on it or walking toward it. There were two paths that split right at my re-entry point after the gardens.
Planning to visit in 2 weeks and your video was really helpful! About the Palace of Holyroodhouse, do I need a ticket to explore the outside area of the palace? I don't plan on going inside.. I like the gardens more..
I wish I knew this answer for sure! I recall having to walk through the admissions line in order to get inside the gates of the palace grounds (which includes the gardens). I imagine you'd have to buy a ticket even if you don't plan on seeing the inside of the palace itself, but hopefully someone can jump in here if I'm wrong!
Very helpful video! Can you tell me the dates you were there? I'm planning a trip next spring but I would like to see more leafs than the trees had when you were there, so I'd like to plan it for a couple weeks later.
Oh & please don't forget, that YOU were a "visitor/tourist" too, so you were just an added extra to that large tourist crowd. No different to anyone else that chose to visit this city & rightfully so!
If you are both referring to my experience at Edinburgh Castle, I am fully aware that I’m a visitor and I had a great time there! As someone who really doesn’t like crowds, I felt - for a paid attraction - they could do a better job at staggering entry times and/or reducing the amount of people they let in at a given time. If I’m paying to see the sights, I’d actually like to see the sights.
Don't drive.. I live in Scotland and deriving in Edinburgh is an nightmare.. Its really not car friendly at all.. Avoid car it's not at all needed unless you do trips away from city centre but I would do the city on one trip then other places on another.. There's so much to see. Mostly enjoy
Plan it! I absolutely loved this city and found myself wandering very early in the mornings and late in the evenings and I never felt nervous about my safety. Of course, I always stay vigilant of my surroundings and I think that’s the most important part of feeling confident and safe - know the places you can duck into if you feel uncomfortable (restaurants, hotels, police stations, etc…) and try to get a decent grasp of your transportation options in the city ahead of your trip. With all that being said, I felt very comfortable traveling as a solo female to Edinburgh!
when did you visit and how was the weather? planning for my trip thats rapidly approaching. also from ny so if you can explain it via ny weather/seasons even better 😅
April 28 - May 1! And for your NY weather reference, it was pretty on par with our early spring. I was wearing a light jacket each day. Only one moment with light rain. I thought it was beautiful and really comfortable to walk around in! Probably mid 60s (F°).
Edinburgh weather is quite variable, so anticipate change on any given day, particularly once summer is over. For starters, it tends to be breezy and can be cooler than you might anticipate. This is because it is located on the same latitude as where James Bay meets Hudson's Bay and has the North Atlantic to the west and the North Sea to the right. In short, it is unlikely you will feel too warm unless you are climbing the various stairs of the Old Town (try the News Steps for a workout). I typically wear an undershirt under a long-sleeve t-shirt or light pullover with a high neck. Over that there is a light jacket or hoodie-style pullover. I also always wear a slim Rains brand 'Backpack' (it is named that) - stylish, waterproof and reasonably priced, these are available online or in Edinburgh, in the menswear dept. at Harvey Nichols). In that I carry a compact umbrella and a light rain jacket (also Rains, available per the backpack). Wear comfy shoes as you will not only be doing a lot of walking, but it will at times be on cobbled streets, which can be hard on shoes and feet. Once again, the weather is variable. And because the city is hilly there can be microclimates that differ from area to area. Also, there can be a lot of grey clouds but they don't necessarily mean rain. They tend to blow over. I love them because they add to the drama of the scenery. They also block the sun so one doesn't get too hot walking those steps and hills. Worth noting that Dean Village and the Water of Leith Walkway are only about 10 minutes walk from Princes Street. Dean Village, the Stockbridge (village) area, Glenogle Road and the Royal Botanical Gardens are definite must-dos. If you like art, the Gallery of Modern Art (now named Modern One, with Modern Two across the street) is a good place to start your day (great café). Then get on the Water of Leith Walk at nearby Belford Bridge and head left toward Dean Village. I do hope this isn't too late to be useful for you. Have a wonderful time.
Just looked it up! Thanks for the suggestion. :) I’m really curious to explore other areas off the Water of Leith walkway next time I’m there, so this would line up perfectly with that.
Get up at sunrise and walk through the Old Town. I know the early hours aren’t for everyone, but this was easily my favorite part of the trip! For those who want to sleep in, I’d say a close second “must do” is visiting neighborhoods outside the main tourist zone. I loved exploring Stockbridge, for example.
we were there in October 2024. Your pictures show very few people. We were there and way to many peop;e. Very touristy. disappointing/ Still beautiful and old but????
Good to know! I’m tempted to schedule a trip to Edinburgh and I had a busy trip to AMS earlier, and Paris a couple weeks ago… and want to know when to avoid that same crowd trouble if I go to Scotland.
When I travel, I always ask a local how to properly pronounce town and city names -- not just for my own awareness, but so I can say it correctly in these videos. I definitely don't always get it right, but in this instance, I was told the way to pronounce it is: Ed-in-ba-ruh (with a slight roll of the tongue on the "r'). I know it's not "borough" or "burg," so if it sounds like I'm saying either of those at any point, that was not my intention. I was attempting to go with this pronunciation: Ed-in-ba-ruh. I know people will fight me on it either way. :)
Yes, the City Council is EXTREMELY lax to the point of negligent when it comes to maintaining the city centre. Given the popularity of the area - it is the city's equivalent of Disneyland - serious cure and curation are warranted. I mean, even if the graffiti and decals were dealt with once or twice a year, but they, despite the appointment of a clean-up crew, seem to not be dealt with at all. The mess of the three red phone boxes just up from the Tron Church is a prime example. If I ran things there would be some serious changes. 🙂
Your report is really interesting, but i just cannot stand the background "music", why do people put this garbage on a otherwise outstanding report, i will never understand that... your voice is nice, it is way enough - no one needs this alienated "music"-sauce!
Thanks for the feedback. I actually spend a lot of time selecting the music for my videos, trying to match the general vibe I felt while I was visiting. Might not be for everyone, though, and that’s alright! Was there a specific music track you didn’t like out of the 16+ songs featured in this video?

Thanks!
Will be there in Christmas time
A good travel guide just the right balance of info and interest...
Great country to visit. I didn't manage to visit the cities, but they look like a must go to locations.
Highly recommend Edinburgh. Would love to go back to explore more and then, of course, visit other areas of the country as well! A highlands road trip is up there on my list. :)
@@akfasso we were super lucky with the weather, but I think like Norway, a highlands visit is amazing regardless of the weather conditions!
Going with a mate in about two months. Right in the week of Bonfire Night. Your video already helped alot!
i love watching videos of edinburgh i live about 20 miles away and am there all the wime visiting my girlfriend its a nice cycle along
Love Edinburgh! Thanks for the lovely video xx
Thanks! And same! I fell in love with this city almost immediately. :)
Great Video, Glad you enjoyed Edinburgh. Haste Ya Back!!
Thank you!
Really a wonderful taste of Edinburgh - cannot wait to go this fall! Thank you. Your last night’s meal at the Witchery looks divine…
Best video on Edinburgh, different, peaceful, useful!
Thank you!
How can u relax when your freezing cold🤷♀️
@@KatherineCaton-lz1yc Wear a warm jacket ?
@@gavinoliver7655 got a better idea choose somewhere warmer so u don't need to wear one
@@KatherineCaton-lz1yc Even better, stay at home & shut up. Bye !
Dear Lady, that was an exceptionally well done video. The videography and commentary were absolutely splendid. I plan to take advantage of your largess during my travels to Edinburgh in 2025. Cheers!
Thank you so much! Glad you found it helpful. Hope you have a great trip!
What month did you go to Edinburgh? I’m planning on going there this spring. Hoping to avoid the crowds. Great video.
This was a great video, very informative with more than just your tourist spots. Thank you so much for your time in making this. I'll have another look when I've got more time to digest it more fully.
Thank you!
Best description and video for Edinburgh. We are visiting in June 2025. Thanks for info ❤
Pretty in the centre. Rough out with the centre. Freezing everywhere.🥶
Glasgow is a lovely city architecturally, albeit, Edinburgh IMPHO, is much nicer, but yes, a bit on the "very rough" side for sure!! lol
Edinburgh is fine. I have visited prior, but not for many years now, so I look forward to heading back there some day soon.
Is the weather very cold around Edinburgh?
@@snskri Depends. The summer can be okay. Winter is freezing. It's like living in a fridge. Spring and Fall can also be cold.
This was a really well-done video. Thank you.
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! Glad you enjoyed the video! Edinburgh was beautiful. :)
What a great review of an amazing city
I am going to Edinburgh solo this September. Thank you for this video:)
Awesome! Have a great time.
The best video of Edinburgh I saw , thank you!
I guess I just cannot appreciate something so refined. lol
On the other hand, I'm crazy about Bailey's Irish liqueur however!
Thank you for sharing & Peace✌
august fly 19th land 20th back out on saturday - have it all planned down to the minute. good video. we travel like this all the time. usually 4 days is sufficient to see a portion of the great places around the world.
Enjoy your trip! Sounds like you’ll be there for Fringe Fest. :)
I’m not sure if that’s still there but it was a fun time!
this is such a rich and great guide. thank you so much! saving this for our future trip!
Thank you! Enjoy your future trip. :)
This was such an informative video!
Thank you! That was my hope. :)
This is a really well done vlog. It saved me the hike up Arthurs saddle. :)
You’re welcome. ;)
Thank you - this was incredibly informative and well done
Live in Glasgow .I'm 🏴 Scottish. Edinburgh is a wonderful city .You missed out in the Johnnie Walker experience on Princess Street. Absolutely brilliant. Your coverage was excellent. "Why didn't you try haggis ",😂 SLANJ
Thanks for the comment! I will have to check out the Johnnie Walker experience the next time around. And I loved the haggis. I think anything served in a meatball format will taste good to me. 😂
@@akfasso Superb .Welcome ye back .SLANJ
This is truly informative, thanks. May I know when did you travel? Was it during Spring?
Thank you! Beginning of May!
Guess I'll need to come back! Thanks for the suggestions.
Enjoyable video, fun fact though the royal mile isn’t actually a standard mile, it’s an old Scots mile and is, in fact, about 1.8km…
Yes! Great point! I forgot to mention in the video, but it is certainly a fun fact. :)
Glad you enjoyed my adopted hometown
Greatly enjoyed
Thank you. Hopefully I'll get there before I die.😢
Thank you from 🇮🇳
Planning to visit in 2 weeks and your video was really helpful!
Wow! I really enjoy your video!
Amazing quality video!!!!!❤
Thank you so much - nicely-done!
Thank you!
Haste ye back. 🏴
Very helpful video! Can you tell me the dates you were there? I'm planning a trip next spring but I would like to see more leafs than the trees had when you were there, so I'd like to plan it for a couple weeks later.
April 28 - May 1
Well made video! ❤
Nice view enjoy 🥰
Love your video!!
Yeah, you’re supposed to go to the Shore in Leith.
It was named in Timeouts Coolest neighbourhoods in the world last year.
Next time! Sad to have missed it on this trip.
Thanks for this video, we are planning a trip next year. Please, what month was this filmed? We are going late April, early May. Thanks again.
I went at exactly the time you described - last few days of April/early May!
Edinburg is a old city of Scotland of UK. City is neat and clean like London.
Edin-beruh or Edin-bruh (not Edinburrough, so American 😆). Great video, much enjoyed. Thank you!
How much is the tram from the airport, please?
Really enjoyed your vlog, really useful, thank you
You can see the prices on the official website for the tram: edinburghtrams.com/
TICKETS ONLY ONLINE NOW and in advance for Edinburgh Castle. Walk-ups will be disappointed during Summer.
Oh & please don't forget, that YOU were a "visitor/tourist" too, so you were just an added extra to that large tourist crowd. No different to anyone else that chose to visit this city & rightfully so!
Yeh, how sad those tourist got in the way and spoilt her tourism.
Witchery: "my most romantic solo dinner ever" .. ;-)
I think they need to capitalize on this market! 😂
Nice please I want to talk more about this country
Don't drive.. I live in Scotland and deriving in Edinburgh is an nightmare.. Its really not car friendly at all.. Avoid car it's not at all needed unless you do trips away from city centre but I would do the city on one trip then other places on another.. There's so much to see. Mostly enjoy
Great insights! Thank you. I found the city to be very walkable, so I agree. A car is not necessary!
So, im looking into planning a solo trip here, and can I ask how safe it felt? I'm terrified of traveling alone but I want to travel here SO BAD!
I live in the centre of Edinburgh. The whole city is 100% safe. You shouldn't worry about this at all.
when did you visit and how was the weather? planning for my trip thats rapidly approaching. also from ny so if you can explain it via ny weather/seasons even better 😅
What time of the year did you visit Scotland
WOW!😮
Colington tunnel is good in Edinburgh
Just looked it up! Thanks for the suggestion. :) I’m really curious to explore other areas off the Water of Leith walkway next time I’m there, so this would line up perfectly with that.
Nice 👍
Nice
New friend😊😊
Does the hotel have a bidet?
Not sure if this is sarcasm (😅), but my room did not have a bidet.
No it is not sarcasm, I’m just curious for myself lol! 😅
Bus from airport into Edinburgh is far cheaper!
I live there...
👏 Which of these 20 activities do you think is an absolute must-do for a first-time visitor? I’d love to hear your top pick!
Get up at sunrise and walk through the Old Town. I know the early hours aren’t for everyone, but this was easily my favorite part of the trip! For those who want to sleep in, I’d say a close second “must do” is visiting neighborhoods outside the main tourist zone. I loved exploring Stockbridge, for example.
did you travel aline?
I traveled alone, yes.
we were there in October 2024. Your pictures show very few people. We were there and way to many peop;e. Very touristy. disappointing/ Still beautiful and old but????
Many of my empty street videos were taken around sunrise.
Good to know! I’m tempted to schedule a trip to Edinburgh and I had a busy trip to AMS earlier, and Paris a couple weeks ago… and want to know when to avoid that same crowd trouble if I go to Scotland.
❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍💯💯💯💯
Apparently it's Edinbra rather than Edinborough and not Edinburg .?
Very good video, I have learnt from it 👍
When I travel, I always ask a local how to properly pronounce town and city names -- not just for my own awareness, but so I can say it correctly in these videos. :)
Number one- get the train to Glasgow!
Only joking.
💖💖
Hearing my last name so much was strange😅
Sadly, Tons of Graffiti on walls, lamp post and buildings.
Hello good morning how are you nice plact
SHOCKING 😲 How Few people there are in The Country's CAPITAL! Looks like a morgue! YIKES 😬
Definitely not a morgue. Extremely busy city. Lived there for several years . Video must have been in the early morning hours.
The Fudge House fudge is awful....Fudge Kitchen is so much better
Americans visit a local market just to explicitly mention that there are locals too. What a surprise mate.
