This is Mark Watson we are talking about! I'm sure he watched every episode, did extensive research and still made an adorable fool of himself 🥰

Some guests take some amount of joy in setting off the klaxons, and some are just confident enough in their supposed knowledge that they doubt that it would trigger the klaxon.
As for Sabreing, there are a few creators online that take challenges to use random items to sabre the bottles, and in general, it works so long as the item has a hard edge to run up the side

Funnily enough tonight's (10th Feb) new episode of QI XL on BBC2 has Sara Pascoe in it!

I think generally the people that go on know full well what answers are going to set off the klaxon... but they're there to entertain rather than score points and are more than happy to 'take one for the team' to get a joke out!

I think it would be more disappointing to be on QI and *not* getting even one klaxon. That is a central part of the experience.

Don't know if anyone else has ever recommended this to you, but think you'd love "No More Jockeys". It's a party game created by Horne, Watson & Tim Key on UA-cam and it's very much that taskmaster style of humour.

Do bottles get re-used anyway? I thought they were all crushed and used in fibreglass insulation.
Long gone are the days of taking the empties back to the corner shop for 10p a time.

Two drinking things I can remember are 1) The penny game - if someone drops a penny in your pint, you have to down it, and 2) Strawpedo - take a bendy straw, put it in a bottled drink (usually and alcopop), bend the end over the rim of the bottle and hold it with your finder, but dont close the straw, then drink the drink. The straw allows the air into the bottom of the bottle easily allowing you to drink very quickly.

We called 'the penny game' 'Save the queen', and it'd be applicable with any coin. The idea behind it was that as there is an image of the queen on coins, so you had to down your drink as to save her from drowning.

Look up the "yard of ale" tradition, the British version of shotgunning that started in the 17th century.

Try drinking a yard of bear, or shotguning a pint (no breath between starting and finishing)... A can is usually a 440ml can, in the US that's 0.9 pints, in the UK it's 0.7 pints...

Posh menus often don't align the price (if they show it) so you have to search for it at the end of a longer description than usual, for what you are actually contemplating ordering.
Not being lined up prevents the cursory scan of prices when you first review the menu, which EVERYBODY automatically does when they're all lined up... and judgement that it's an expensive place to eat is deferred until you get the bill.

I've been to places with ladies menus, but the men also got the ladies menu, you basically don't know the price until the bill comes but in being there in the first place they know you're good for it.

Isn't 'shotgunning' a beer a Canadian thing? Canadians could drink Russians under the table. At least, Canadians I know (I'm a dual citizen, so shaddap) are amazing drinkers- can put more away and still be standing upright than anyone I know...

Always do your research before anything! Especially in entertainment! A little effort can go a long way! Working with international musicians quite a bit, you'd be surprised how much better the day can go if you come in with something as simple as knowing how to pronounce their name!
