You probably remember Sally Phillip's water cooler moment.
I was in the audience for this episode with a dear friend of mine who’d never seen QI. Needless to say he’s hooked now.
Also I was so excited when Jimmy and Gyles came out they’re definitely in my top 10 of QI guests, ever.
Gyles Brandreth is a QI legend. He takes every opportunity to tell some life story that seems to imply he and his family have contributed to just about everything important event in history however obscure the event! 😂
Gyles is a LEGEND 😂😂😂
Finally one of the Brandreth/Carr episodes. These are legandary.
I think the reason Sandi talked about 20,000 leagues in relation to diameter and not circumference is because she was talking about in terms of the up or down motion of a submarine. When a submarine dives it’s technically moving along the same axis that you’d draw the diameter on. So she was saying, to dive DOWN 20,000 leagues you’d have to descend through the entire planet 6 times
Don't attempt to use logic with someone who has been taught something and is so smug that any opposing opinion must be incorrect.
@@TheOrlandoTrustfull In fairness the graphic did show around the world. Effectively the sub would always be moving along a hypotenuse of some kind of function of depth down and distance horizontally
You probably recognize Sally from one of the earlier series of taskmaster, the one that Bob mortimer won.
Lovely Sally was on Taskmaster, and she played the Prime Minister of Finland in Veep.
You may remember Sally from that time she waterboarded Alex on Taskmaster
1:16 Sally Phillips.. "I feel like I've seen her before..."
As always.
Taskmaster.
Series 5
She was my favorite, I'm not British and I only had seen her a few times before in panels. I LOVED her in Taskmaster.
More of Gyles! He's an absolute treasure
I think if Gyles Brandreth, Bill Bailey and Phil Jupitus were all on an episode together a comedy singularity would form
Hilarity would become infinite and anyone who watched it would die laughing and be crushed out of existence!... I think you may be right, we need to warn bbc not to do this!
Love the comment: "I should have taken Latin" when it was actually Greek :D
Greek fan of Neil here.. Yeah.. especially because of QI, Neil has come across my country a few times and he is not always correct but it's fun nonetheless.
Oh! And later on we had a connection. Hawaiian Pizza was invented by a Greek-born Canadian. Sam Panopoulos. (He emigrated to Canada in 1954, aged 20)
Hi, Neil!
If he had taken Latin, he would've at least realized that it's not Latin.
@@Baiko You see? Neil is always wise.. I just failed to realise the levels of thought there. Thanks Baiko.
Also, to be fair. I had the option of taking Latin in school. I never had the option of Greek. I did two years of German instead. Still not sure exactly why.
@@NeilTalks Well, obviously so you can imitate Stephen Fry's "Ich habe mein Handy verloren"-impersonation of a camp German accurately.
I feel like ive seen sally before... yes she gave birth on taskmaster. How could you forget.
Gyles is cool. Met him on a bus once. Had to resist the urge to tell him I had his book of jokes a kid. I’m almost 50 lol
The cardboard policeman reminded me of the episode of Dave Gorman Modern Life Is Goodish where he ran a series of experiments using different cardboard cut outs (Series 5 Episode 3).
Love that one
Sally Phillips as an actress has been in plenty of tv shows and movies - the Bridget Jones franchise being probably the biggest. QI rarely disapoints!
Sally Phillips was a contestant on Taskmaster, the same series as Nish Kumar and Bob Mortimer
More than that - Sally is the all-time alpha of TM. I bet Alex still has nightmares about her..
Gyles also holds the Guinness World Records for the longest after-dinner speech (twelve-and-a-half hours) and previously held the longest on-screen kiss record (three-and-a-half minutes, performed with/upon Cheryl Baker on the 14th February 1984 episode of Good Morning Britain
I believe he mentioned those in a QI episode that was previously reacted to on this channel
Fanny Craddock was a UK tv chef who hosted shows in the 60s and 70s with her husband Johnny. Legend has it that at the end of one show where they'd made some doughnuts, Johnny turned to camera and said "...and I hope all your doughnuts turn out like Fannys"
The way I heard it, it was the continuity announcer after the programme who said that.
Sally brought up Johnathan Creek about half way through. One of my favourite shows growing up. Alan Davis as a lesser (more realistic) sherlock holmes character. Such a great who done it detective show, would totally recomend at some point to anyone
Sally Phillips is probably best known for Smack the Pony, a comedy sketch show from back in the late 90's, early 00's. Well worth a watch if you haven't seen it.
She was also on taskmaster!
One of my favorite sketch shows of all time, that
Not to mention Bridget Jones's Diary, Veep, and Miranda.
Magnetic in I'm Alan Partridge, first.
Quorn is a British brand of meat substitutes. Mainly sold in Europe but available in 14 countries.
It’s made primarily from mycoprotein, essentially protein derived from fungus, the fungus culture is dried and then mixed with egg white acting as a binder, it’s then often adjusted for texture and sold in a variety of ways. As a result it’s only vegetarian, but it can be made for vegans by using potato protein as a binder.
I often eat slices of it when having a Sunday roast dinner, not because I’m veggie, but because I’m not too big on lamb or beef.
Ooo i saw this episode being filmed!
You wouldn't believe Giles was a Conservative member of parliament, born in Germany just after THE war. He's hilarious and full of very odd and random information. He's one of those people always seeking knowledge no matter how esoteric or seemingly useless...
Series R revolutions
Quorn is a brand name for a meat replacement in vegetarian food stuffs , like sausage.
It is also a town in Leicestershire , being the home of a famous hunt
I love Gyles. I'd love to listen to him waffle for hours.
The name "Have you eaten, Grandma?" is actually quite a clever name for a book about punctuation.
And in case someone is wondering it is actual book Gyles had written.
Giles Brandreth has written a LOT of books, most notably a recent series of very entertaining detective stories which team up Oscar Wilde and Arthur Conan Doyle.
Gyles, I mean.
Thank-you very much for informing and entertaining my lunch sir :)
I adore Giles. His Twitter page is fun. He responds too.
Brian Blessed has had a much more interesting and exciting life. However, Gyles Brandreth is a fascinating figure in his own right. While in the UK he is often thought of as a joke, he seems to take it in stride, and I think that is what makes him so charming. Check out the series H episode 'Hanatomy' to see Gyles with Stephen.
London foxes generally get on well with cats, mostly just ignoring them but they've been seen eating alongside them.
We had chickens on the farm, I think foxes go by smell more than sight.
You know Sally from season 5 of Taskmaster.
Feeling very spoiled with QI backing up the Taskmaster premiere.
Gyles was a Tory MP and has done just about everything over the years , he's always an interesting guest . I personally don't think he's quite as legendary as Brian Blessed , but panel shows are very much his forte . Sally is also a clever contributor , (she was on Taskmaster ) . If you ever have tired eyes Giles and many other great comedians have been regular guests on radio shows such as "Just a minute " and there have been many memorable moments .For the 50th anniversary the BBC made ten tv episodes chaired by the late , great Nicholas Parsons .
I suspect you know Sally from Taskmaster Series 5
There was an episode with Sami Shah which i remember as being a really fun one.
Sally was on Taskmaster
Gyles was an MP
Brandreth vs Brian Blessed... Just imagine their pillow talk...
Cool. That's TWICE today Hawaiian Pizza being invented in Canada has come up! Created in Chatham Ontario in 1962 by a Greek! ;)
The UK is full of wierd and wonderful characters, there is not best... Look at sir Ranulph Fiennes, he's a character... Shortly after his heart attack and double bypass surgery he did 7 marathons, in 7 days in 7 continents...
He's the first to circumnavigate the globe by the North Pole and South Pole by surface means and the first to completely cross Antarctica on foot. In May 2009, at the age of 65, he climbed to the summit of Mount Everest.
He's named by the Guinness Book of Records as "the world's greatest living explorer".
Watch S17E07 Quests Part 2. It's pure hilarious chaos and one of my favorite episodes!
Gyles pal of Prince Philip and equerry to the Queen.
You recognise Sally from Taskmaster, surely?
Competitive eating is a real sport in parts of the world (mostly the US). There are qualifying tournaments around the world for the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, held in New York every 4th of July. It's been held for over 100 years, but in the last 20, the record has been shattered over and over, going from somewhere the 20s up to the 70s within the ten-minute time limit. And you're absolute right about swallowing - a competitor in any professional-level eating competition is disqualified from he event if they have, as it's officially known, a Reversal of Fortune.
Brian Blessed. All day. The man is a legend.
QI episodes to react to: Series A, Episode 1, “Adam”, Series J, Episode 5, “J Places”, Series J, Episode 14, “Jingle Bells”, Series P, Episode 5, “Public and Private”, Series Q, Episode 8, “Q Animals”, Series Q, Episode 14, “Queens”, and Series Q, Episode 7, “Quests: Part II”
Thanks! They are all now on my list. :)
great list. both quests episodes are great, but part ll is gold!
@@tinyderppotato5410 I like part 1 more because of Phil
I love Giles, but the answer is Brian.
Sally- Taskmaster
I really think you should react to the Greg Davies bad dong video. It comes from the big fat quiz. 😂😂😂😂
Jimmy carrs New season of I literally just told you just dropped on you tube. Check it out even if you can't do a reaction to it.
didnt see it on telly
On Gyles Brandreth vs Brian Blessed... the thing is, I believe everything Gyles says, but not so much Brian (though there are many amazing true stories about him even so!)
Southey rhymes with mouthy.
I wouldnt say that Giles is beloved by the nation. To some he is merely a figure of ridicule.
And he doesn't care.
Gyles seems far too decent and likeable to have been a Tory MP. But the lord moves in mysterious ways.
My opinion of Gyles went from huh, to God this guy is annoying, to this is comedic genius
I'm still at phase two, if I'm honest.
