    There was a period part way through Fry's reign where most of the episode would be just Stephen Fry reading out interesting stuff from his cards with the panel sitting there quietly and paying attention. Not many laughs, but the 'quite interesting' part of the show kicked in so I wouldn't call them bad. That might be as close as you get. Seems to me Ross Noble started appearing on the show around that time and seemed to have been told to bust things up a bit. Not sure if that's correct, just my impression as a viewer of many years.

      having seen all of them, i'm not sure which period you mean. There are more and less active guests, but has always been the case. The first 1-3 seasons had a bit more of a question answer structure.

    I adore David and Victoria, and I know exactly why he makes her starry eyed and vice versa. I’ve got less material to go on with Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, but they’ve both made very passionate political statements I wholeheartedly agree with over the years and I’ve loved both of them in films, so they spring to mind as another equally beloved celebrity couple.

    Can't think of many episodes that are particularly bad, but there were a couple during Covid that were recorded without any audience that meant it all felt a bit flat, and the guests seemed like they were over compensating with laughter!

    • @ariadnepyanfar1048
      @ariadnepyanfar1048 Рік тому +2

      I actually enjoyed those. Sometimes you’d hear an ‘audience’ absolutely cracking up, and it had to be the crewmembers behind the cameras because there was no one else in that auditory space. Something very delightful about people at work, who have to have seen everything QI has to offer, still getting entertained by the panelists on the show they make themselves.

    • @gdj6298
      @gdj6298 8 місяців тому

      Jimmy Carr remarked about QI along the lines of "Ideally, it should feel like a good conversation with friends"
      The Covid episodes - once you got used to there being no audience - felt that way. And, let's face it, we were happy that they were done at all !

    I can't think of any episodes I'd consider outright bad. Sure there have been annoying/boring/unfunny guests that drag some episodes down but there's no episode I'd say was _completely_ ruined by a bad guest; there's always enough good stuff with Alan/Stephen/Sandi and whoever else is on the panel to make up for a weak link, in my opinion.

    Difficult to say which is the "worst", but there have been some subpar ones. The Rory McGrath episodes were him just showing off. Like you, I get peeved when guests are intentionally being stupid or abrasive.
    One episode for me that didn't quite live up to the usual standard was with Nina Conti (Series I Episode 6 "Inventive").
    Someone I felt also should have done better, even though the episode itself wasn't bad per se, was Greg Proops (Series J Episode 10 "Jungles"). Maybe it was just my high expectations as a big fan of his.
    As far as someone ruining an episode because I don't particularly care for their comedy, I would go with Vic Reeves and Ruby Wax, although thankfully their appearances were few and far between.

    I honestly can't think of a bad episode of QI, but the guest I was most disappointed with was Frankie Boyle. I'm a huge fan of his, but he hardly said a word during his episode (I'm guessing he said more during the actual recording, but knowing Frankie it was probably unfit for broadcast).

    To come up with a bad episode of QI seems like an impossible challenge to me - none of them are! Though, naturally, some are better than others, and some guests less interesting than others, but all of that tends to be balanced out by better guests, the hosts, and of course, Alan. Therefore, one episode which I tend not to rewatch a great deal is Divination, simply because Alan isn't present for most of it. But the other guests aren't bad, and I don't recall anything notably terrible about it. Other people will be more cynical perhaps, but I can't name a bad episode of this show.

    I'll mention 2 possible episodes, based on comments on the Internet (questionable accuracy) about which panelists were dreadful.
    I haven't seen the episodes, so I can't judge if this is valid for their performance or people "hating" the panelist.
    Maybe someone else who has seen either of the episodes can comment.
    Some complaints are about Ruby Wax. That would be S8 E5 "H Animals" (2010).
    (The episode had an average IMDB rating for that entire season.)
    In response to the criticism, others felt that she wasn't bad, just out of her element and trying too hard.
    The other was for Sir Terry Wogan. That would be S6 E1 "Families" (2008).
    (That episode had the lowest IMDB rating for that entire season.)
    He was a television broadcaster in the 60s, but I can't find any details about his QI appearance.
    As others have said, the shows are entertaining even when one of the panelists is an anchor.
    On one user-voted poll, the worst rated QI episodes were dominated by season 19 (2021).
    Missing the audience and not the fault of the guests, I would say.
    On IMDB, the clear "favorites" for worst are the VG (compilation) episodes.

    I haven't seen all the episodes of QI, but I probably saw about half and my least favourite is the one with Ben Miller, Rob Brydon and Shaun Lock. I think you have already seen it. Ben is really trying to say something interesting and Rob and Shaun are being dicks and acting like they don't care about what he's trying to say at all. Especially because he is trying to talk physics, which is honestly one of the most interesting subjects in this world, it really rubbed me the wrong way, it's probably the only QI episode I ever saw and didn't love.

Everyone knows - or should know! - that the truly bad ones, as you said Neil, aren’t remembered, even if they were somehow in the charts. They’re anodyne. I don't know who it is but you've already reacted to one of them, I hate know it all show offs on this show, even when you have the others to balance them out, if they're extremely knowledgeable AND funny I don't have a problem with it, but when the only reason they're there is to flex their knowledge on everyone else and being serious about it without joking around then it's an instant turn off for me. Fortunately I don't think there are many at all that are like that, I can only think of one off the top of my head and can't even remember the name.

    People are most likely just going to suggest particular episode where they don't like a particular guest.
    There're two episodes that annoyed me only because the 'fact' was too contrary to my own opinion (about chocolate digestives and which way they should be up and whether in making tea should milk or tea goes in first) but I can't remember which episodes they were featured in.
    Also was not keen on the episodes where Sandi was dismissive of Bridget Christie for her trypophobia, then the other guests proceeded to bully her about it (Alan especially when he poked holes in some paper to show her)
    So these are the worst by my criteria but even then they are still entertain.
