I quite like the Alan Davies show "As yet untitled". Not a quiz show, but a group of celebs (usually comedians) sit around telling anecdotes hosted by Alan. Not a quiz but not exactly a chat show either. None of the guests are there to plug a film or book they just exchange stories about things that have happened to them. Much more gentle feel than a chat show. The end of the show they try and decide what to title the episode.

In the later stages of Stephen's run, the BBC put out a directive specifically regarding panel shows, that the guests could no longer be 100% male in an episode. That certainly went some way to expanding the roster of shows like QI, giving us the opportunity to meet people like the wonderful Cariad Lloyd. With QI in particular, though, I think there are some other factors (host chemistry, generational shift, popularity attracting newcomers, etc), but when it comes to involvement from the top, that's the major one, the mandatory inclusion of women.

A "directive". You mean they came out for sex and racial discrimination.
The show is unwatchable without Fry. "Diversity" is not only disgusting in principle, it leads to a worse product. If 95% of the best comedians are straight white men, then straight white men should have 95% of the most high profile comedy gigs.
They did the same to 8 Out Of 10 Cats. They do it with age as well. They discriminate against older comedians. Younger comedians tend to be atrociously unfunny.

In my home town there isw a local cricket pitch. And, when we were young we'd stand at the gates with a receipt book and we'd charge people entering by car £1, we'd give them a ticket and tell them to put it somewhere visible in their car. We did that for years on every cricket match. Also during the summer months we'd go to one of the many fishing places and we'd collect £5 off the anglers and ask to see their fishing license. If they didn't have one we'd give them temporary one for the day for an extra £5. There is about 6 waters with fish in all within a 1 mile radius, so we could quickly get a nice sum of cash. I was assistant manager of the towns under 18 football team and they played on Sundays. The games took place on one of our recreational areas, funnily enough called "The Rec" (some one was quite lazy when naming things hahaha) and once again we'd stand at the gates charging the visiting teams cars £1 to enter and park. lol. We had a load of ticket books of all manor of things made. So, it all looked legitimate. We'd be wearing a money belt and a 'hi-vis' jacket, for colder months or a tabard for warmer months. There is also an unused quarry nearby that's been repurposed as a place to ride Trials bikes. Once again we'd be at the top of the farm road, taking payment for something that's free. There's also a another motocycle circuit for Moto-X (motocross). We charged people to use that too. No one ever suspected a thing because why would they? 2 blokes in high vis gear and official looking tickets... We charged people for all sorts of things. lol. Every 1st Saturday of the month there used to be a huge party in a converted barn. It was our job to sell beer and I was also one of the DJ's. But not only were we selling cans of beer (can's that we bought for £0.50p and were charging £2.50 for) out of the back of a van we were also charging people £5 to get in.

Cariad's (which is the Welsh word for 'darling') a regular on UK panel and sketch shows. QI, WILTY, HIGNFY and 8/10 Countdown. She also has a brilliant podcast "Griefcast". Well worth a listen.
One guest I haven't seen you cover yet -- and I can't specifically recall which (Stephen) eps he's done is the ex-Communard the Revd Richard Coles.

Cariad is a Welsh name. She is a stand up comedian. The little fish song is one my grandad used to sing when I was a child, It was very popular in the north east of England where there were a lot of fshing ports. Maybe find it as Dance For Your Daddy. Panel shows here give comedians work of course. And news commentary cemedy is especially popular. Perhaps it wouldn't do well in the US where people are less likely to be able to be critical of their politicians or celebrities. We have a long history of being ciritical as humour and of course we aren't particularly letigious. :)

If you've seen any British show or film from the past 20 years, chances are Matt Lucas was on it. He's been on everything from the music video for the Blur song Country House to Shaun of the Dead to Little Britain to Astro Boy to Alice in Wonderland.
He also showed up in an episode of Community and had a side role in 15 episodes of the 12th Doctor's run in Doctor Who.
If you're into musicals, you might have caught him in any of the two filmings of Le Miserables anniversary shows (25th and The Staged Concert).

I agree with your comments about QI being a possible agent of change. The lure is entertainment. The pay off is new knowledge and challenging previously held "facts". It is a show which relies heavily on the quick wit and humour of contestants and the host, who, also, must have charisma and gravitas. Just like your good self.

I don't know if it would work here. We have more than enough talent, but I think the biggest obstacle would be travel costs for guests (The UK is tiny in comparison). I don't think anyone would take on the risk of it not working with sunk costs. There WOULD be a solution to it that could work, but would be an intense filming schedule and less of a consistent set, at least for a pilot season. Travel the host of the show, and record at comedy festivals. IE, get it as a mainstage event (so re-coup money on tickets), and do 3 - 5 of them over the week. Time would be a factor in that as well, since each episode is usually 2 - 3 hours of shooting, add an hour to turn-around to the evening performances plus pre-show and you'd likely have to start shooting at 1pm. 9am start of day for set/camera... The more I think about it, the more possible it might be!

Stephen Fry was amazing as the host of a comedy gameshow that brought together wit and intelligence. He stepped down at just the right time for Sandi Toksvig to take over.
It’s changed the whole dynamic of the programme, ridding it of the toxic masculinity that was a problem with many panel shows of it’s type. (And of course subject to a BBC investigation.)
Some of the earlier episodes would not have a single female on the panel for several weeks.

My favourite thing from Walliams and Lucas is "Come fly with me". Not very PC with all the blackface and yellowface, but it's done in good humor and so funny. Especially if you watch a lot of airport reality/documentaries.

I think the comment about Boston refers to the town in Lincolnshire rather than the US city

I think that too - Boston USA was settled by a group of people from Boston, Lincs and they named their new town after the old one.

I hear you about how most version of British programmes don't travels well across the pond. I don't think it's the humour not translating ( you as and others who really love and appreciate what we do here in Blighty on UT has proved) but probably more to do with to do with TV networks that constantly trying to tweak and change to suit their own cultural tastes. Of which ronically the BBC is doing with most of it programming in the last few years, too much tinkering by committee trying to pander to all and sundry. No surprise there have been a mass exodus of talent leaving the corporation of late, citing its a pain in the arse to get ideas realised and made, without jumping thro a gizillon hoops. Other than Gameshows (Who's Wants To Be An Millionaire The Weakest Link) the only programmes I can think of of late that did travelled is the UK version of The Office (BBC), Whose Line Is It Anyway - quite a lot of the Americans regulars started out on the UK version, and Shameless. Both of them came from Channel 4, which sadly will be privatised before long. No doubt It ll probably sold to some American media behemoth , and whose knows, in a few years we'll be getting British knocked off versions of American Show don't translate well...

You do realise that when you are talking your voice is so loud that we cannot hear the show? Which kind of defeats the purpose.

"People don't trust the educated and intelligent in America" Reagan, Bush Snr, Bush Jr, Trump. All back up your widely acknowledged observation. It's a very strange but true trait. A superiority complex.
