    Check out "the incident at bamber bridge",it's the story of black soldiers being welcomed by the residents of the English town of Bamber Bridge and how the Brits stood toe to toe with black American GIs against their white counterparts,when told by the American top brass that the pubs would have to follow the segregation laws imposed in America,the pubs put signs in their windows which read "black troops only",an early-ish example of "don't tell an Englishman who he can and cannot have a drink with",I've watched it several times and it makes me even more proud to be British

      @silverfoxeater you'll find incidents like Bamber Bridge were happening all over England during WWII,there were numerous street fights between Joe publicand the white GIs (and of course I realise not 100% of England was as welcoming,that goes without saying,it's human nature)

    • @lynnhamps7052
      @lynnhamps7052 2 роки тому +8

      @silverfoxeater This was more prevalent in the 60's, when an influx of immigrants were wrongly perceived to be 'taking over' the UK, despite the fact they were invited, not during the war, my father was a Romany and I clearly recall 'No Gypsies' signs...even then, we have never had true segregation .

      @bucklberryreturns 2 роки тому +1

      I think the views changed post WWII.
      During, they were on our side, willing to fight to save our sovereignty. They were our brothers in arms.
      After the war, in places all over the UK, such as Cardiff Bay (see the Tiger Bay riots...), our boys came back to find West Indians in their jobs and homes, with their wives. Understandably, they were not happy with these black fellows "coming over 'ere..." etc.

    The part about Judas Priest was wrong. The song wasn't called "Suicide Solution", it was the song "Better By You, Better Than Me" from the Stained Class album that led to them being sued.
    Suicide Solution was an Ozzy Osbourne song, written about the dangers of alcohol abuse, hence the name. It's a song that also led Ozzy into a courtroom because another teenage boy killed himself after listening to the song.
    Just thought I'd clear that up. Not everything said on QI is accurate 😆

    It actually happened to me. The brain remembered something I´d read years before that when a car was about to run me over. From around the corner came a car and I was just in the middle of the road and I knew there was no time and it was going to hit me. And in the split of a second I remembered I´d read in a book that you should not be standing on the ground, you should jump up or something. I did sort of jumped onto the bonnet and rolled across the windshield. I ended up hanging off the side mirror, a hole in my jacket, just really nicely hanging there... (It was a book about people who survived plane crashes and stuff :). So I would have a chance even in a plane crash :)

    The guy on the right is Robert Webb, he’s best known for his comedy work with David Mitchell. It’s worth checking out their “odd couple” sitcom called Peep Show, about two flat mates, the repressed and socially awkward Mark (Mitchell) and the free spirit and wannabe musician Jeremy (Webb). They also made a sketch comedy show called That Mitchell & Webb Look, you may have seen a scene that went viral where they play two WW2 German soldiers, where Mitchell’s character questions why their uniforms have a skull insignia on them, before asking “are we the baddies?”

    Unsuprisingly he does stand-up, too. Some wonderful bits of those include his one-anecdote segment on Live At The Apollo series 8 episode 3, and his early 2000s routine about the lions of the London Zoo.

    It is true that you can control levels of pain with brain power.
    Pain is how your brain interprets signals of stimuli, it also passes through the part of the brain that processes emotion, so if you can retrain the brain (through therapy .etc) you can stop the brain from receiving some of the signals as pain. (eg. Some mental health conditions and conditions that effect he nerves can cause false pain signals, so the pain sometimes can literally be “in your head”)

    The Finns didn't win the war against the Soviet Union. They managed to inflict very heavy losses on the incompetently led and poorly prepared* Soviet forces, both in the Winter War of 39-40 and in the so called Continuation War of 41-44. In both cases the Soviets eventually managed to overwhelm the Finns, and Finland had to make concessions to the Soviet Union in the resulting peace deals. But importantly, the Finns did manage to maintain their independence, which could be considered to be what really mattered in the long run.

    About the Black US troops in England in WW2. You should look up a video about Bamber Bridge. The White US leaders told the English that they must not mix with the Black US troops. So this one town, Bamber Bridge made all 3 of their pubs "Black troops only". Obviously the White US Colonels didn't like this passive aggressive joke the English were playing and they caused a full on battle. You should just search "the battle of Bamber Bridge"...

    Not subliminal advertising per se, but I remember back in the day in the UK there was an advert for Neutralia shower gel in which you saw a very attractive young lady showering, in an adverty way, and you could see her nipple. Anyway, one day while I was shopping something in my peripheral vision caught my subconscious' eye and I instinctively snapped my head around to see what it was -- and it was a display of Neutralia products.

    You don't know Robert Webb? He's David Mitchel comedy duo partner.
    You really need to start doing reactions to anything Mitchell & Webb like "That Mitchell and Webb look" or "That Mitchell and Webb Situation".

    It's just "Ukraine", not "The Ukraine". The "the" is a holdover from the USSR days where "the Ukraine" was a subservient region.
    Ukraine has been an independent nation since 1991.

    Military history is sort of the ultimate instance of home-field advantage. You mentioned Russia's Military history, and their poor results in many wars. What are the two greatest Russian victories we in the West know of? Repelling invaders. First Napoleon in Moscow, then the Nazis in Stalingrad. Afghanistan, neither of the two major military powers in the world could make any headway when they tried. Colonial oveethrows throughout history apply such principles, which is why so few parts of the world are still unwilling colonies of other states. And it's why the successes of the Ukranian invasion have been limited and stunted so far. The people who fight to claim their homeland are always going to have better odds than the people who fight to claim someone else's homeland. Not a sure thing, but better odds.

    I’ve watched the sunset clip many times and I still don’t understand it. The whole concept of a sunset is an optical illusion, so it doesn’t make sense to say it has “really set” at a certain point.

    • @SaturnusDK
      @SaturnusDK 2 роки тому +1

      That wasn't the question though. The question was when the Sun was below the horizon. It is you who made the leap to that being the same as when the Sun sets.

    • @wozzywick
      @wozzywick 2 роки тому +1

      The horizon is the limit of what you can see. It is an illusion. To say that the sun is “really” below the horizon when you can see it makes no sense.

    • @SaturnusDK
      @SaturnusDK 2 роки тому +2

      @@wozzywick That's one interpretration, and what is known as the _geometrical_ horizon. That includes local conditions such as tree lines or the general landscape but also include optical effects of the Earth atmosphere. In physics especially astronomy, a horizon is the direct line including the curvature of space-time. It's also known as an _astronomical_ horizon. So when you're asked such a seemingly simple question as when the Sun is below the horizon that should make you pause and question what definition of a horizon is being used.
