Zep is the best band in the history of bands by a wide margin. There are a lot of great bands in the history of music, but LZ has been the cream of them all since 1968.
You are the first reactor that realized that they talk to each other while playing. This was their magic. They always did this. This is why they're magic. A true group .
We kind of never talk about John Paul Jones, but this is perfect example of why Zep isn't Zep without him. This is tasty, patient and powerful bass playing.
John Paul Jones is genius....any instrument you hear that isn't guitar or drums on any Zep tune is being played by him... and him and Bonham live during Pages solo/jams is straight up phenomenal.. wouldnt be Zeppelin without any one of them.
Robert Plant plays the tambourine and also plays the harmonica. If you notice, anytime that you hear the harmonica in their songs, Robert isn't singing. Otherwise, you're correct about JPJ playing everything else. :)
That song was dedicated to Richie Valenz and they list his mother as one of the writers in the credits so she would receive royalties from it, due to the fact Richie got screwed out all his royalties by a shyster manager. Now that's what you call paying homage to the roots of R/R.@@altjacobs
Dudes sound is so crisp & clean. Who set up his mics deserve a atta boy at least. Saw the house they recorded in, bonzo was in the entrance of the house, the foray or whatever wit high ceilings
JPJ is probably the best musician in the group. He was humble enough to let the other three shine at their strengths and fill in whatever was necessary to complete their sound.
John Paul Jones also plays piano, organ, synthesizer, mandolin, and is an amazing arranger. Like in Kashmir, that isn't an orchestra that is JPJ playing a Melton (an early synthesizer that sounds like strings), and he wrote those parts. He is the sometimes unsung genius. Secret weapon. They are all insanely good at what they do.
Zep was the master of dynamics. They'll take you down a slow smooth road, and then triple the tempo with a major punch in the face. This song, case in point.
You forgot reggae (D'YerMaker) and punk/metal (Communication Breakdown), country (Bron Yr Aur Stomp), more mystical is (Stairway to Heaven, and No Quarter) and inspired by myths and legends (The Battle of Evermore)
These 4 had such talent and played so well together. Unlike other bands, there was no egos clashing, and they actually 'fed' off each other, taking turns and following, then leading. They were so in sync with each other musically that when John Bonham passed, they knew they couldn't get the 'magic' with someone else.
I’ve read that JPJ used a fretless bass for this so he could slide as smoothly as Jimmy was with his slide guitar. The live version of this from Earl’s Court in 1975 is really good.
@@kikivon3501 I saw a documentary about this and I believe that they recorded the drums in the foyer at Headly Grange because they had to put the drum kit out there for some reason. Bongo and Page noticed a perfect echo and the rest is history.
I am 70 yrs old and glad to see a young man dig the music from my era. I love your reaction. Believe me when i first heard this it blew me away. You got a new fan
Really enjoyed this reaction! This song is a heavy metal gospel march. We are marching on this to the battle field for our Lord! And when the music stops and Robert Plant tells out, "Oh, my Jesus!"...that takes me to church every time! I love how the song changes time signatures from heavy to funky to the most triumphant arena rock stride anyone has ever heard. That's what people sometimes forget, this band was heavy but funky! And every part played by every member of the group fits in perfectly, from Jimmy Page's slide guitar riffs to Robert Plant wailing, "Ooohwhooooaaaahhh! Yeah, yeah!" To Jonesy holding down a steady, counterpoint on the bass and Bonzo switching up the drum beats from metal march to a dance rhythm. There's a live video of Zep playing this at Earl's Court in 1975 that is simply amazing. Also, I would be remiss if I didnt recommend my favorite Led Zeppelin song, How Many More Times; you gotta check that out, especially if you find a live version of it!
...it's an homage and interpretation of several other songs, notable by one by Willie Johnson about 1928. Dylan also interpreted it, in the early 60s. Then Zeppelin kick started it and made it soar with another re-interpretation.
So, Van, you've now joined your daughter Naia in becoming a Zep head! Good for you. This is a Blind Willie Johnson tune, but augmented by bits from 9 or 10 other old blues belters. Robert and Jimmy were both blues freaks in England (there are lots, you know)- JPJ was more classical/ pop; Bonzo was a jazz drummer til Robert convinced him to join Robert's prior band: Band of Joy. Jimmy and Robert frequently do those call and response efforts, and they always try to fool the other, then laugh and laugh! Check out 'You Shook Me' for a great example. btw Robert plays killer harmonica, and JPJ plays keys, guitar, mandolin (and probably more) as well as bass. And Jimmy did the production wizardry (he and JP were big time session musicians in London and got to know ALL the tricks). btw, Naia is crushing on Robert...
As a Zep fan, I am so glad when other people discover them. And you are right - "smooth" is the correct word too describe this song. I think these lyrics are taken from an old gospel song. Your reaction and joy to their song really made me smile.
I remember when you did Whole Lotta Love. Now you know why everyone reacted as they did. I really appreciate that you gave them another chance. Love your reactions!
"Call and response", you say? Which is standard in gospel music? Which he would've heard plenty of in *church*? Yeah, no way he would've known that already.
Some people use their voices like musical instruments. And some people can turn their instruments into their voices. Led Zeppelin we masters of the later. They could make you feel loved with a riff or break your heart with a single lyric. So amazing to see you reacting to these masters of the musical arts.

Great reaction man. I'm two years late to the party my man. John Bonham helped arrange the stops and starts and the time changes while they worked on it in their sessions to record it. There's a nice live pro shot video of this song released officially by the band. The film is from Earls Court on May 24th or 25th, 1975. You should watch them do this in concert man.
The Greatest thing about Led Zeppelin is they have no bad songs at all, and each album made they brought different styles of sounds, vocals and great lyrics. the bad thing about them is there is no bad thing about them. If you want to hear to hear another great one from them. I recommend “Black Country Woman” off their Physical Graffiti album. 🤘🏻🇺🇸
My favorite Zeppelin song and with a catalog as good as theirs is hard to just pick one favorite but this is in my opinion a perfectly written and played song
This is from a Gospel Blues song originally done by Blind Willie Johnson in 1928 called "Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed". Zeppelin did a fantastic job with their arrangement. My favorite LZ recording!

led zep is the best rock band period.
They are technically metal because of how the writing and structure of the music is set up.
