Interviewer to Prince: "Last question: Who was the greatest band ever ?"
Prince: "OH that's easy , Led Zeppelin. They didn't have one song that sounded like another song of theirs, nor anyone else's. An incredible feat. And to this day, no one's been able to duplicate their sound. Every song, unique."

This song is a reworking of the gospel song by Blind Willie Johnson. Jimmy is using a slide on the guitar for the entire song which gives his guitar that filthy, fat gritty, growling and spitting tone. The drums are aggressive, almost violent and the bass is menacing. This song started out as a jam for them that they built and layered. The improvisation meant they didn't have an ending for it so when Robert pauses at the end, it was because he didn't know what type of ending phrase to put on it. When Bonzo coughs, he says something like "Oh that's gotta be the one" meaning, that's got to be the take they're going to keep, and the engineer in the booth asks him to come have a listen and Bonzo replies "Oh yes, thank you." It's bits like that that make you feel like a fly on the wall listening to this greatness be created. I am SO THRILLED you're going to start from the beginning and learn their entire catalogue! You're guaranteed not to miss a thing that way!

What a great job of doing this traditional song their own way. They did make things louder in their covers, but don't be deceived - it's more than volume. Volume played a role, but it had to support the feeling tone of the songs and increase those feeling tones because of other nuances. Sheer emotion may have had more to do with it than volume, but they worked well together.

I never did no harm. I never did no wrong
Oh, Gabriel, let me blow your horn (x2)
Oh, I never did, did no harm.
I've only been this young once.
I never thought I'd do anybody no wrong
    No, not once.
    ~♩♪ ( Instrumental ) ♩♪~
Oh, I did somebody some good.
    Somebody some good...
    Oh, did somebody some good.
I must have did somebody some good...
And I see them in the streets
And I see them in the field
And I hear them shouting under my feet
And I know it's got to be real
    Oh, Lord, deliver me
    All the wrong I've done
    You can deliver me, Lord
I only wanted to have some fun.
    Hear the angels marchin',
hear the' marchin', hear them marchin',
    hear them marchin', the' marchin'
    Oh my Jesus... (repeat)
Oh, don't you make it my dyin', dyin', dyin'...

I'm sure I'm late informing you, but Jimmy played the song with a slide. Which if you're not familiar with, is just a short section of pipe, glass etc. It started mainly with old Delta blues players, using bottle necks, which I personally don't like, I use a coricidin bottle, ( I'm sure I spelled that wrong.) It's a medicine for colds I think, Duane Allmann used the bottle from his prescription to learn slide while recovering. When I was younger he was my favorite slide player, so I copied him, probably had better options, anyhow that, with his effects, overdrive etc. Is what you hear. Check out The Allmann Bros. Statesboro Blues. Duane playing slide. It's a good song to start a great band. I think it's originally Taj Mahal's song, or maybe Willy Dixon? Not 100% sure. The original Southern Rock band, though I'm sure they considered themselves much more and are. Jimmy page used slide on quite a few songs. You Shook Me is the first one that pops in my head

How about a second channel? Zay & Zel does Zep. All Zeppelin. Do The Kenedy Center Honors Led Zeppelin. Anne and Nancy Wilson performs Stairway To Heaven for Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones with Jason Bonham on drums. Keep some Kleenex handy, makes eyes water.

Go check out some old Elmore James. Famous guitarist known as the "King of the Slide Guitar". That's what you're hearing, is a slide on the guitar. This ain't nothing but good Delta Blues....remake of the 'Blind' Willie Johnson tune from 1927 I believe it was.

Jimmy is playing a Dan Elecrto guitar with a slide. Allows him to make that stretched out tone.
