First premium I got in War Thunder, and honestly next to the A-10 probably the main reason I'm still playing. Definitely improved the early experience for me.
Thank you so much for adding that comment about bombers! Too many times ill get in a bomber and all the wyverns hit the bases and leave us heavies with nothing to bomb... At that point, you are just shooting practice for any fighter that climbed.
I've been in a few matches that ended early because wyverns bombed all the bases then the bombers got their airfield, though the number of maps they let you do that on seems to be getting smaller all the time.
Post-Review comment: yep I forgot about naval, it is a good antiship plane. Its more usable in sea maps for air RB rather than naval RB, since aa gunners are less dangerous in air rb. You can get up to 3 destroyers, one with the torpedo and the other 2 with 8 RP-3s each. For pure 'fighting' in air RB you have to treat it like a jet: if anyone chases you just go straight, get some distance and make a good engery turn once you are 2,5-3km out. Another good tactic is to roll 90° for the headon snipes: this way you have to only center the crosshair without adjusting for gravity at any range, the convergence will create a solid line of bullets. I reliably kill anything at .8km with this manouvre. Regarding cas or ground pounding in general, I use the 3 bombs for uptiers in ground rb or if I wanna go bomb bases, if in downtier or to grind ai ground targets the RP-3 are a good powerful choice if you get to mange your aim. Anyway this plane is what a proper premium/event plane should be in my opinion: unique look, not meta at all and either gimmicky or peculiar/nieche equipment and tactics to use, paired with very little productions numbers.

I didn't know you didn't need to slow down for torps in arcade, that may actually make the torpedo useful! In realistic you need to fly so slow to drop it you're just begging to be shot down by anyone with a gun within 1.5km.

I finally bought this at half off during the last Winter sale, and I'm so glad I did. Since then, I've made more RP with it than any other vehicles in War Thunder, and SL too. I'm grinding British Rank V as of yesterday. I don't even specifically take it out to grind RP and SL with, I only use it for daily tasks and events. Ground targets, base bombing, critical hits (gets to the six AI attackers before anyone else, friendly or enemy), and it could probably even hunt bombers if you climb hard enough. No good in a dogfight, for obvious reasons, but I've found that many people absolutely LOVE to head-on four 20mm cannons and get themselves obliterated in the process.
Considering how long the A-1 Skyraider remained in service and fought well in Vietnam, this plane probably had more years left in it and was retired early

I disagree with this review cause the wyvern is literaly so fucking fast for its tier that most fighters cant engage it Giving airspawn to such a fast plane is stupid and even worse its players are so bad that gaijin lowers its br

This thing made British 1-5 such a breeze. Even now I’ll play it for some casual SL grinding. Ended up being probably the most bang for my buck I’ve had from any purchase in this game.
this thing's turboprop engine sounds downright terrifying whenevery one gets close to me. also once in a game we had like 8 wyverns on my team it was a slaughter
Depending on what daily, special, BP task is currently in front of you, being “that guy” is almost a must. Since Gaijin has decided that not only do you have to compete against the enemy, sometimes you have to compete against your “teammates”. It’s sad really, but if you have limited time in your day, you have to play for yourself first, and sometimes that means calling the closest base immediately and letting the slower planes get what they get. I don’t ever bomb a base that someone else called unless I see them explode on the way to target but plenty of times folks bomb my target. I understand that no one “owns” a target but at least if they let you know they dropped, you don’t waste your ords but again team mates in WT is kind of an oxymoron. I may be weird but I actually like the looks of the Wyvern. It’s kind of a Frankenstein plane but in a good way.
Yeah, I love this plane. When I got it it was at a higher br, now that it's lower it's even better. Nothing can catch it if you go straight, 4x20 hispanos with plenty of ammo and stealth belt are a reliable 800m headon snipe and the 3x1k lbs make it an excellent fast bober/cas. I've farmed millions of sl with this thing.
yeah, i bought this plane back when it was released in update 1.59, this thing was a beast back then, -accelerates better than a jet, it literally reaches top speed within a minute after taking off, was bullshit when you get air spawn with this -nothing can chase it unless you're using the Tempest because of the 650kmh top speed at 5.7 -RP-3s was practically flying nukes against tanks, even when they're grouped loosely at like 7-10m, you can get multikills with 1 rocket however, the hispanos was called sparkanos back then doe, it doesnt do anything lmao definitely enjoyed it because i used it in pair with the Strv 81(UK) since both were released together
For all of its flight performance shortcomings, it absolutely is one of the best grinders out there. From my air sim perspective: if you fly it like a jet (fast, ease up on the stick when turning), you're untouchable. The Hispanos are perfect for eviscerating bombers, AI and player alike. I've even had moderate success in uptiers to fly it alongside my Spitfires (though, other props can intercept you). I really should use it more for attacking ships and ground units, as the premium bonuses will help it make even more SL than I already do. Overall, a great aircraft, perfect for progressing through the British air tree, and for making bank for other purchases.
Using the rp3s or "smaller rockets" is kind of hard, but with some practice you can get pretty good at killing things with them. It just takes time and patience.
Wyvern for me is the best match carrying vehicle of the whole game, if I had a squad of 2 or 3 who followed my strategy I think I would get 90-80% winrate in it.
Make sure you have the default ammo belt selected. Sometimes the ammo belt costs a few extra SP, and as you're noticing that can make the difference between getting the external ordnance or not.
Also have to let you know the RP-3 rockets are amazing they nurfed the accuracy way back cuz they were too good but if you get a lot of practice with them you can 2 tap a panther and it gets 16 of them trust me it’s worth practicing with them
A late comment but I figured I would throw this here for anyone that sees the video from this point on. The Wyvern is an attacker equivalent to the Skyraiders which all sit at 5.0+ and the Wyvern currently sits at 4.0. With such a low BR the Wyvern is genuinely the best fighter 3km and below and nothing comes close to matching it. Even at 5.0 the Wyvern would still be one of the better fighters 3km and below for its entire BR bracket. The only reason a Wyvern gets shot down in air RB at the moment is because the player flying it made a massive mistake somewhere. Learn to pay attention to what is around and above you to keep everything out of range and learn to play smarter, not harder will make you about as untouchable as one can possibly get in War Thunder no matter what you are doing. One other thing I will say is that the bad performance 4km and up doesn't matter, even when flying the Wyvern as a fighter. There are ways to energy trap opponents when you start below them. Very few players actually know how to do it so you rarely, if ever, see it done. With such a massive speed advantage over everything it sees and a great climb rate relative to all fighters it can see energy trapping opponents from below is made that much easier. The Wyvern really is an insanely good air RB fighter and very few players realize it. As an attacker the Wyvern is also a dominant force. So dominant that I think using it to bomb bases is a waste to some degree. If you use some basic real life attack techniques and keep your speed up you can clean out a lot of ground targets quickly. On a few maps you can clean out up to a quarter of the opposing team's tickets before any opposing fighters even have a chance to stop you. I've seen matches decided because of this alone. I've seen matches decided single-handedly by a Wyvern attacking ground targets and keeping its speed up as much as possible to avoid fighters trying to pursue it. Currently the Wyvern is the best do everything plane in the game in air RB with the caveat that you pay attention to the game going on around you and plan accordingly. If you get shot down in it, again this is in regards to air RB, then you messed up massively somewhere. Focus on figuring out what you did wrong when you do get shot down, learn from your mistakes and you will get better. Edit: The Wyvern is totally 5.3-5.7 worthy in every role it can possibly fill. The fact it isn't is frankly ridiculous.
Great review as usual but uhm one question if i tag the closest base and go for it but do everything to leave any already tagged base even if it's the closest one, does that make me THAT guy?
Generally speaking, "THAT guy" is the one who dives in under the bombers and completely destroys the bases, leaving nothing left for the actual-bombers to hit. Sometimes THAT guy swoops in and takes the base out after the bomber has already dropped its bombs but before those bombs have landed. If that isn't what you're doing, and it sounds like its not, you're all good. If you're actually tagging your targets, and respecting other people's tags, then you're doing better than most. 👍
In game terms the torpedo is bad. You need to reduce your speed so much to use it. When you could be using 3 1000 lbs or two drops of 2 1000 lbs and one 1 lbs which can take out reliably up to heavy cruisers and one destroyer without being vulnerable.
The wyvern is the go to plane for daily BP tasks. Nothing more reliable for first convergence, aerial superiority and mass destruction. Also, the video makes it sound like this plane is sluggish. For it's BR, you can open the throttle and expect to outrun anything assuming they don't have a massive energy advantage. I throw in the xmas smoke for good measure to blind them and there is no catching up.
i like to climb to around 1.5km, 2km dive bomb a base then use the excess speed to either climb back up and rejoin the team entering the area or just zoom back to base and rearm! rinse and repeat it prints SL
Personally I use RP-3's extensively in GRB, thanks to the overpressure changes they're a super reliable kill on anything open topped or lightly armoured. Usually I can get 3-4 rocket kills with one rollout in the Typhoon, and the wyvern is just a bigger badder typhoon for the most part. It takes a little practice to get used to the trajectory but once you do they're super powerful, rly good for dunking on sleepy AA as well.
I wouldn't say the Wyvern is a bigger badder Typhoon, the Typhoon is better in every way except speed, and that it carries very slightly less secondary weapons. Well I guess also the ability to land on carriers but Gaijin would actually need more then two maps in the game to have carriers for that to be relevant!
I usually rush enemy spawn with my Wyvern. Depending on the map size, it can be very effective at disrupting enemies' climb and getting some head-on kills. Plus, battles are short and SL farm per minute is better than for ground pounding or playing conventional fighter/interceptor role.
I don't know if you do requests, but I would love to hear your take on the Japanese Starfighter! I'm struggling with it right now and would love to see some pro strats
👍. Do u run the 3 1000 lb bombs? Because the 2 x’s I have drop one the plane just stats rolling & unflyable. It does the same with the other bomb load out just not as bad. Wish they would fix that.
You ever consider doing a review of the Yer-2 (ACh-30B)? Fascinating design history, absurd bombload, and terrible in every other way. Takes a very interesting mindset to strap 5,000kg of ordnance to something that’s only got a pair of 1500hp supercharged diesels
Hey Tim, I believe it would be interesting to make a guide about missiles performance. What to expect about AAM in term of atitute and relavite speed performances. Often I see people firing AAM even tho the target is pulling away from them with greater speed. What do you think ?
I've toyed with the idea, its just a matter of free time. I got toe-deep into the concept in my "complete guide to air to air missiles" talking about range/energy considerations.
People don't think like us and most(all) players aren't team friendly. Designating a base means nothing and being generous or a team-player gets you nowhere and a whole lot of nothing.
I remember using this thing just for bombing bases originally, discounting it's insane (and I did look this up eventually, completely incorrect) engine power and climb rate. Now I can use it for most missions that involve killing bombers, bases, ground targets, sea targets and I can usually knock down at least 1-2 fighters who get stupid and take a head-on with me while in the middle of that or just after. The Wyvern is difficult to come to grips with, but after 200~ matches you'll know exactly what it can and can't do, and you'll be shredding the skies. Potentially the best single tech tree climber in the game if you have the patience. I especially like dropping my bombs and taking out a base, then turning around and being so fast I catch an enemy bomber just as they arrive over our bases. Really don't appreciate the "that guy" line, there's nothing wrong with using a plane designed to blow up bases to blow up bases, sorry it seems to upset you. Lastly, I noticed during your landing coverage you didn't shut the engine off. You can stop about 50% faster if you cut the engine right before you land. Next time you're taking off (with no payload), don't throttle up, the engine at 0% has enough power to pull the plane forward, always have a key bound to engine off if you want to stop fast. So a low-fuel plane with no payload is going to be much more affected by the idle power. n.b. the loss of climb rate at high altitude has always seemed irrelevant, I'm always the highest position on friendly team if I am bomber hunting in it, and I can outclimb basically anything by either being faster or climbing better at almost any altitude.
By far my biggest regret in the entire game probably, and I have a lot of premiums. I saw people saying that it's amazing in RB so I assumed it would be at least usable in AAB. I bought it as a backup to my Mustang. It's absolute garbage (in AAB, against other planes). I would unironically rather use something like a Brigand. Wyvern has a lot of ammo but that's about it. The flight performance is just awful, it can't do anythnig other than head-ons (which are risky and the plane isn't very suited for those) or running away (which just wastes time). It loses all its energy the moment you change direction, its high speed isn't even that great and isn't really good for anything useful (it will also cause you to get to the center of the battlefield faster if you don't turn to the side, and that will likely get you killed pretty fast). All I wanted is just an acceptable heavy fighter, you go it, you kill a few people and you die. And I'm still disappointed. It's probably alright as purely a ground attacker but other planes cna do that while still being able to actually defend themselves. The only things I like aobut this plane are: counter-rotating props, the funky noise, the amount of ammo and the fact that it has lots of room for custom cockpit pictures.
Gotta say I despise this plane. Most who play it are cowards who use the top speed as a crutch to avoid dogfighting whenever they get intercepted. Very irritating to play against.
Easily a 5.0 plane or higher. Attackers as usual considered by snail as just fighters with payload. Kinda sad, nothing can catch this piece of shit in a straight line until about 6.0 and even then it has to be a mustang
Perfect 4,0 BR. Take away speed and S4 dies fast. So you want it placed where other fighters can overmatch its speed? And get what? This plane is situational, depends on team fighting for it as alone it dies.
@@tmilos80 It is not a fighter, so it should not be balanced to be competitive with fighters. Even as an attacker it’s still way better than everything else at 4.0, and even 5.0.
@@tmilos80 It is equal to the Skyraiders in terms of an attacker. There is no reason for it to be so much lower in BR. It is at such a low BR that it is the best fighter for 3km and below combat and nothing comes close to matching it. 3km and below it's climb rate is one of the best relative to all fighters it can see and there isn't a fighter that can catch it 3km and below too. Stick to hit and run or BnZ, pay attention to what is above you to make sure nothing can catch you in a dive and the Wyvern is completely untouchable and very dominant. The only reason it dies at all is because so many players flying it don't pay attention or play harder not smarter.

In game terms the torpedo is bad. You need to reduce your speed so much to use it. When you could be using 3 1000 lbs or two drops of 2 1000 lbs and one 1 lbs which can take out reliably up to heavy cruisers and one destroyer without being vulnerable.
This baby has made me a fortune in SL.
I was going to say this too. Tim forgot about the overpressure changes or is not aware.
@@commandoepsilon4664 keep in mind the Wyvern can carry double the rockets of the typhoon, arguably its best cas option
@@kosmokat111 It also gets double the bomb drops, but I still say it isn't better than the Typhoon, just more specialized for ground attack.
I usually rush enemy spawn with my Wyvern. Depending on the map size, it can be very effective at disrupting enemies' climb and getting some head-on kills. Plus, battles are short and SL farm per minute is better than for ground pounding or playing conventional fighter/interceptor role.
Tim, could we possibly get a mig 23 ml in depth review? Considering it’s a extremely bought premium it would help a lot of people :D
It plays nearly identically to the MLA, which I've already reviewed, so it probably wont be anytime soon.
@@TimsVariety oh, okay thank you, I’ll check out that video
@@TimsVariety also one last thing, do you recommend r24 r’s or t’s everyone’s opinion in game is mixed :/
@@tierneysmith7915 Its situational. I usually use the T's, but honestly both are good and its 99% personal preference.
@@TimsVariety one annoying thing about r24t is losing track right after launch but that’s my error
I don't know if you do requests, but I would love to hear your take on the Japanese Starfighter!
I'm struggling with it right now and would love to see some pro strats
I challenged myself on geting good with rp3 rockets. Sometimes I miss them all but I can usually get tank kills with them.
👍. Do u run the 3 1000 lb bombs? Because the 2 x’s I have drop one the plane just stats rolling & unflyable. It does the same with the other bomb load out just not as bad. Wish they would fix that.
Fix what one side of the plane has more weight so it rolls
I wanted to make a documentary about westland wyvern since i couldn't find any on UA-cam but couldn't find enough information
Very good SL grinder
They like all other planes are hard to use in Navy battle as the ship AA is very strong even when set to AI doing it if crew level is high.
You ever consider doing a review of the Yer-2 (ACh-30B)? Fascinating design history, absurd bombload, and terrible in every other way.
Takes a very interesting mindset to strap 5,000kg of ordnance to something that’s only got a pair of 1500hp supercharged diesels
Oh I'll get to the Yer-2 eventually :-)
@@TimsVariety hell yeah love to see it
It is worth it. It is faster than most things.
Can you please do a video on keybinds because as I get into more advanced weapons and I have to use weapon selection it’s really confusing
I go over keybinds a bit in my "complete guide to radar/missiles/atgweapons/etc" vids
I actually like the look of it. IT is so ugly it is good, for me.
The accent is on the FIRST syllable, not the second! WYE-vern.
Most the money i made in this game is because of this plane. Love it.
Does it worth buy 50% off even I did not play British
People don't think like us and most(all) players aren't team friendly. Designating a base means nothing and being generous or a team-player gets you nowhere and a whole lot of nothing.
Absolutely. Also clicking the base first in the slowest plane doesnt make you entitled to it.
The only close to OP plane in the game 100%, people hate XP-50s lol and im like yea...... No.....
even at 5.7 it would probably be pretty good
also is that a jet engine on it?
THE ARE ALL THAT GUY
Wyvuuurhen
Gotta say I despise this plane. Most who play it are cowards who use the top speed as a crutch to avoid dogfighting whenever they get intercepted. Very irritating to play against.
It's a pig, but a good pig.
Me watching this review knowing full well I’m not gonna buy this plane. 😶
O.O Ugliest? I don't have an issue with her lines at all!
Why, Vern? Why?!
Like nails on a chalk board 😂
i believe its pronounced we-vern
Helped me alot during events and with daily tasks..
Actual money printer
wyVERN!!!
I have to disagree with you. The wyvern is cool looking.
THEY...
Wyvern is best girl
Why do you say it like that
Why, Verne?
why do you insist on pronouncing Wyvern as two separate words??? This is rage inducing.
I don't? Its one word with two syllables.
Yeah it feels good being nice and go for the furthest bomb zone or going for GTs.. :) Leaving the bomb zones for stratetgic bombers.. I most often go for GTs though as I mostly play it for tasks getting Gts..
