Your great advice reminded me about how I styled myself when I was first out of university and beginning my career: I built a look and wardrobe similar to that of my first supervisor (but also according to my own tastes) who was widely respected and admired throughout the company. I looked up to her for all matters, how she worked, communicated, and behaved, not just how she looked. It worked; when she, sadly, left two years later, I was promoted to her position! I never forgot her work ethic, dedication to quality, and professionalism; what a fabulous role model for a young professional.

Visualizing the person you want to be, prior to shopping, is very important. Otherwise, we tend to fall back into old habits, which is a waste of time and money!

'dress for the woman you want to be', this is such beautiful and inspirational and powerful idea Marie Anne, I really, really love it; and I want to tell you that what I really love and find unique about you is that your teachings about style and fashion have always this kind of 'psychological undertones' as well, and for this reason I see you as a kind of a 'mental fashion coach' than just a stylist

After knowing about body shapes, things has changed. So, when I decluter my closet I'm aware of what to keep and what to leave. That goes also on buying new items that suits me and complete what is missing in my wordrobe after considering quality not quantity. At That point, I found my style and my new me.
    Thanks a lot Marie-Anne♥️

    Bonsoir Marie-Anne.
I had to de clutter my drawers this week because despite I adore my turtleneck sweaters we are in summer and the weather will be very hot and humid for the next 3-4 months. So I won’t wear them and it makes me very sad.
I decided to store them in airtight bags away from the dangers of maybe insects that could ruin them. Besides this last year I purchased some spare shirts for my office in the colors I always wear but since the old ones are in perfect shape, I also removed the new ones so they will be safe and won’t take space in my closet.
I will need my sweaters in some months and my shirts in maybe a year from now (something I couldn’t understand made me buy those spares and maybe that was a good inner advice because chances are economy won’t be the same), but meanwhile they will be protected in their bags.
Have a wonderful and beautiful weekend Marie-Anne and happy Easter to you and yours!

In general, when money is printed and artificially increased in quantity. The money in total becomes individually (per dollar) less potent. In other words, inflation. Where the appearance is that prices go up, and they do. But in reality the purchasing power of one's money becomes less, so it takes more dollars to buy something. Just in case you wanted a second opinion on this.

I have to say that my purchase of The Tidy Closet put me on the right track months ago and now it’s a case of doing spot checks every few months or so or when seasons change. I have also found that checking with my style journal ( yes, I have one now!) helps me to decide on what really suits AND fits me. Yet another great video! Hope you and your family are well and that Coco and Peanut are ok. 😘

A fitter more energetic woman who has no limits in her professional challenges. She dresses in neutral colours and has wavy Auburn hair. She likes dressing in long, ample suit pants and silk blouses. Her favourite fabrics are silk and wool for the autumn and winter, and linens and cotton for the spring and summer. She visits Paris very often and takes vacation in Normandy.
She goes to a tennis club, meditates and goes to the gym for fun. She gets in an amazing stronger shape every time AND NEVER DOUBTS HERSELF.

Thank you for clarifying something within my mind. About a year ago, I had a very vivid dream while sleeping. In that dream, I saw myself wearing a pink tweed 2 piece jacket and skirt. I was thin (thiner than I am now) and my hair was a lighter color. When you were saying to think about my real style self, I suddenly remembered this dream.
Funny thing was, I had never owned a tweed piece in my life and didn't even know there was such a thing as pink tweed until I did some google searches and realized that the outfit I saw myself wearing actually existed in real life. How in the world could I have dreamed up something I didn't even know existed? Obviously, this must be my soul telling me what my real style is.
I bought myself a pink tweed skirt suit and now that I know what to do (since you have explained it so succinctly), I am going to revolve my wardrobe around this iconic look.

In cultures that are pretty consistent I can see that this video's advice is very good. In the States, I encounter passing through widely different economic and cultural areas everyday. So, the problem is, that what I would love to wear does not go over very well in different areas of town or country. That I pass through in daily life. In some areas, there is actually an advantage (even safety) in looking and behaving like the locals of an area. Even though I've worked hard to earn a different lifestyle. It's a conundrum.

      C. C. This is Exactly why I would not want to move back home to the US. I loathe the thought of not being able to dress my own style and be me. So.. working really hard to start my own business or only go for jobs that isn’t require me to be in a 9-5 office setting; before we come out of this isolation period. We were in the path of going back to the US permanently before this.

I don't find it unsafe to dress to my style and am so sorry that you feel that way. What I find more of a challenge is to remain uninfluenced by those around me to 'dress down'. As human beings, we don't live in a vacumn and it is natural to be influenced by what is around us. In other places, like Paris or Milan, for example, the way people dress is part of a larger lifestyle I suspect. People are surrounded by beautiful architecture or artful displays in shop windows or the way the barrista presents her coffee. Quality and attention to detail is just what people do - dressing well, I think, is just part of the whole thing. When you don't grow up with and aren't surrounded by that kind of influence, it's much more difficult in my opinion at least.

A lot of capsule wardrobe channels seem to have blue and camel in them, or are otherwise pulled together by people with cool skintones (winter/spring), where I am definitely a warmer autumn - and I love autumnal colours. I don't mind blue (if it's the right shade!!) but it's not my *best* colour...
When I wrote out my shopping list, I divided it up into sections and then thought about the colours I wanted - I know I want to add some nice browns - cinnamon/nutmeg shades are gorgeous! - and sage/moss greens. I honestly don't think I want a wardrobe with only three or four colours in, but working out a wardrobe with four or five colours that will work together hasn't been too difficult. And it doesn't matter if you can't wear two tops together because the colours clash, so long as both tops go with the bottoms you have (I am definitely a trousers person, so I'm keeping one or two skirts and we'll see about the rest!).
Blue and brown do go together, and either colour will go with green. Lighter shades of blue and brown go with burgundy and cherry-red (my other colours that I adore!).
Right now, I think nearly all of my trousers are polyester or acrylic which isn't the best, but it's what I've got. I got a nice pair of corduroys in the Boxing Day sale, but I'm not sure how much wear they'll get over summer (plenty, of August turns out to be cold and miserable - as will my jeans!). I've got out of storage my summer three-quarter trousers that I bought last year - perhaps not totally French chic, but I do get very hot on hot days and need something cool that's not a full-length trouser - and they'll go with pretty much everything.
I've always preferred solids to prints, though I do have (and adore) my own nautical white-and-blue striped top, and recently bought a white-and-navy polka dot shirt. I'm also one of those people who's always bought clothes with the intention of keeping them as long as possible, so I've had some things for years. (I just wish I could make linen trousers last longer! The problems that come with larger thighs... :D )
I have to fix one of the drawers of my wardrobe but once that's done, I'll be putting my thick winter jumpers away and starting to think ahead properly to summer, though I think I'm going to be one of those people to keep the bulk of my clothes to hand year round!
(Wow, I'm sure you didn't need the essay!

Bonjour Marie-Anne. You have been very busy making videos for us! Merci.
Your timing is perfect. I’ve had some time to spend on my style journal. Previously I just had a notebook with ideas, for example websites with clothes I’d seen in magazines or brands I was I interested in. I was planning my perfect capsule wardrobe and had cleaned out the things I won’t wear again. There were a few question marks on some items which I was hanging on to. We were cleaning out the garage and I came across some shoes that are still in very good condition and I wasn’t sure if I should part with them, so they were there in no-man’s land. Now they’re in a bag for charity, next time I go They are nice but not the me I’d like to be. So that really gave me the confidence to decide. 👏

❤ bon soir Marie Anne , I’ve just watched your video.
While watching the video a thought came to me about decluttering and finding my true self and my true style.
I will buy a simple basic clothes rack , a temporary aluminum one.
Then go through my main wardrobe , taking out only the individual pieces I think suit me.
Hang these pieces on my simple clothes rack, then work slowly on adding quality new pieces to the rack.
That way it will be easier for me to de clutter my remaining wardrobe. 💙💜

Even though I have completed a course to become a colour and style analyst. Colour never spoke so much to me (as in all these colours you are supposed to because you a this or a that) Style is something that i find far more important. I'm in a constant fight with all these 'rules'. Thé way you said it is so comprehensible, without putting people into boxes. And that is very refreshing.

I already have a clear vision of who I am and how to acheive my style. Cleaned out my closet of clothes that are too big. Quite a lot of clothes! One pile of blazers and vertical stripe blouses are in my sewing room to be altered for my smaller size. Other than two to three heavier knit elbow length t-shirts, I'm good for clothes. Those t-shirts are something I can wear to work or with my off work Goth outfits.

I'm sure that the best systems for making decisions are with M.A's. lessons. But maybe for a period of time, just be content with taking pictures of everything that you are tempted to buy. And, then in a couple of months go back and decide if those would have been wise purchases for you. By looking at the pictures.

I understand exactly what you are saying and it is a wonderful technique I have just put into practice. I am having trouble slipping back to the comfortable old person I was-advice? I dressed dramatic natural but I am a soft classic. Dressing subdued and softer is difficult at times because it challenges my confidence and leaves me to question am I acting and dressing the true me, that person who dressed dramatic natural for the past 48 years.

It shows that you have found and accepted who you are. Its a journey that does not happen over night. Thanks for sharing so much through your channel, all the best to you!

Thank you, Marie-Anne. You have revealed a powerful technique to help us all release things from our wardrobe that may have worked in the past, which we once loved, and we spent good money on. My new mantra will be: does it suit the new me and the woman I want to be, moving forward? Joyeuse paques a vous et a votre.

That all makes good sense to me. I do have a very good idea of what suits me but still make lots of mistakes! With some decluttering and well thought out future shopping I can get it right. One thing I will be buying when I can is a silky navy blouse....it's so me! Best wishes and take care.

I live in sheath dresses. They're just so easy as a wardrobe staple. You don't have to worry about a top and a bottom or matching the two. I decluttered almost everything except my dresses. Had to put the brakes on, though. I guess I might need jeans sometime.

I have always known my style and have always enjoyed fashion. However the last few years I have tried to refine my look. Only buy what I love, what fits and what I can wear with other pieces. I used to couldn't pass it up if it was too good of a price. It's not a good sale if it hangs in the closet. I also am trying like you suggest, put different pieces together. I also try different things that perhaps I would not have chosen. I have a difficult time getting rid of nice clothes even though I no longer want to wear them. Now I am saying yes I can give them to someone else to enjoy. That comes from not wanting to be wasteful. It makes room for new things that I do love.

I'd tried to visualise the person I want to be it's not that easy, but I'd love to try the fashion/ style journal that you talked about, I've heard about it before but dont actually know what ot is and how to begin could you please give a video on how to start a style journal.?

This thought provoking theme is giving people a reason to resist repeating their old buying habits without reevaluating and envisioning where they think they would like to be or how they would like to be seen.
When one buys something new, unless it is a replacement piece, one is re-imagining themselves even if only slightly. However, this is not a whole reinvention of self. It must begin from the present, moving progressively rather than something like a complete makeover or it would be awkward.
An accretion is something added that is foreign. An evolution is a development in stages or phases.
Example: it is easily transitioned from casual or informal to office professional if one usually wears a classic casual attire. Replacing sweaters with blazers and jackets, adding accessories, upgrading shoes and hand bags to everyday trousers and buttoned shirts. This is a development rather than a complete wardrobe replacement.

I love the way Angelina Jolie dresses. Completely minimalist, neutral colors only, and like you have talked about, never more than 1-3 colors from head to toe. She's very inspiring to me. The sheath dresses, pencil skirts, ivory and white silk blouses - she is the celebrity that dresses closest to the way I dress. I also love many of Audrey Hepburn's garments. I once made a copy of the LBD she wore in "Charade" with the band of black glitter fabric. :o) Meg Ryan is also somebody whose clothes I've often liked. She can look like a slob when the paps take her picture on the streets of New York - baggy jeans, a boxy jacket or coat, but she doesn't seem to veer much away from white and black, either, and I like that. Please do a video on Brigitte Macron! She's also one of my style icons! I love her dresses!

My wardrobe has been ( and what I prefer) classic clothes with blazers/jackets, smart trousers and blouses, sweaters and nice tailored beautiful dresses.....I now spend my days in casual t shirts and jeans or casual pants....I like not working but miss my clothes I enjoy. Love the hat MA! Not sure why folks would request that you teach them to dress like an American! While I love my country and am very proud to be American, we are not known for our fashion sense! In traveling the world I observe what women are wearing wherever I go. Hands down, in my humble opinion, the French women know how to look elegant and classy even at their most casual! As other posters have noted, things here have gone very casual! Worse now with covid. The predominant fashion seems to be Levis and LuLu Lemon. AAARGH! While of course there are always exceptions, I think we Americans. tend to try too hard, or look "overdone." Myself included which is why I am trying to learn from YOU! The best US stylist I know was my mom. She always looked elegant and well put together. She did not apologize for always being the more "dressed" up in her circle of friends. She dressed classic, understated, never loud or gaudy. Right amount of jewelry and accessories. Kind of Jackie O. Wish I would have listened to her more in my early years, lol. I have adopted your philosophy to "love what you wear". Some days I look French chic and some days I am boho chic, depends on my mood. Regardless, I have gone through my closet and eliminated anything that does not multipurpose or that I don't absolutely love. Glad you are sticking to French chic, thank you!

I can be fickle with my style. Earthy tones and a lot of black, to a phase with soft muted tones. Since letting my natural silver grow in, now I'm opting for a bit brighter colors, so I don't look washed out. Sometimes I regret getting rid of peices when I change my preferences. My issues revolve more around color pallettes than style. Any suggestions? I am currently regretting bringing more black back into my wardrobe. I can soften it with a scarf or alike, but I dont always want to wear one.
