Steve Blackman, the showrunner, said in an interview (which was published after I already finished and posted this video) that the reason why he gave Five a romantic arc is because he felt like he needed one. Personally, I disagree with this statement, especially since Blackman seems to equate love with romantic love. To me, Five's arc has always been one of love. The whole show was literally kickstarted by his love for his siblings. He found a way out of apocalypse for them, he reversed time to save them and consistently did everything in his power to keep them alive at the cost of his own physical and mental well-being. And Lila became part of the family along the way. I don't think anyone could say that Five doesn't know what love is because he wouldn't have done any of these things if that was the case. Moreover, if the point of this subplot was to show how extreme isolation and being stuck in time affects you, then I would argue that Dolores already served as a good example of that back in season 1. I don't think anyone doubted that. Blackman also seems to imply that Five deserved to experience that romantic love in his life, which personally bothers me a little, because it almost feels like Lila was supposed to be some kind of consolation prize to allow Five to experience it in what was, essentially, his last moments before they all had to sacrifice themselves. No matter how you cut it, I think it's some extremely messy writing. Just some food for thought for you all, because it's something I wish I mentioned in the video. Also, thank you everyone for watching and commenting, I'm absolutely delighted to see everyone's takes on this season and Five's character specifically!
@@golden-prism And really what was the point of the romance with Lila. It went nowhere. It only caused hostility with Diego with no resolution as brothers before they “sacrificed themselves. I HATED THAT THEY WERE SNUFFED OUT STILL FEELING ANGER TOWARD EACH OTHER. WTF!! They could have explored Five with a different person…NOT LILA 🤦🏻♀️
@@tonybuc67 It's also worth noting that in another interview, also released after this video, David Castañeda (Diego's actor) said that he protested the Five and Lila subplot to Blackman, but was outvoted by the production crew.
I don't think there would be any good way to give Five a romance considering he's an old man in a 19 year old body, by season 4 and before the 7 years of being lost in another dimension thing, unless they put him back into a body that fit the years he's existed. I'm also so annoyed with the mindset that you have to be in love romantically in order to have a happy ending. I think as a writer, you have to be able to accept, what you may want for a character, might not fit them the best. That's why I like it when there's a lot of writers behind the scenes. And when you forget the core values of your characters, you're going to butcher them.
I genuinely started thinking that Five was either another Five from another timeline or that he got bodysnatched like Gene because I couldn't believe the character I've watched and loved for five (hehe) years would actually act this way
Agreed. It feels like the Five the fandom saw and loved all these years and the Five in the showrunner's head were two completely different characters.
I think that it’s showing that five is maturing and becoming more of an actual adult because even though he is 68 he doesn’t act like it because he never had a stable life where he could mature into an adult
My problem with the Lila/Five story isn't even the fact that they kissed, because I find it somewhat plausible that after so many years in survival mode and not knowing if you'll ever find the way back home, people can get very lonely and find solace in each other. Intimacy can be a way of escapism. However, the storyline doesn't add ANYTHING to the plot! Lila and Five don't discover anything interesting in those years, like a way to stop the apocalypse, they don't interact much with the other timelines, they don't meet an interesting new character - nothing. If you remove the storyline, nothing changes. There is already tension between Lila and Diego, the love triangle doesn't add much to it. I really don't understand why the storyline exists. Maybe the idea was to show the loneliness of Five and that he's craving love and connection - but we already knew that because of Dolores.
For real, they just came back to the other siblings and the show moved on like nothing, I think the writer just got them lost to justify their relationship 😂
@@thischhh971agreed! So many things happened cos they needed to happen this season with no real explanation - I’m thinking of the train suddenly becoming an express line and getting them lost. There was no precedent. It was super contrived and led to a total bomb of a sub plot
I didn’t mind them kissing either because I realized that they were lonely and seeking intimacy. I just figured they would go wait, no let’s focus on getting back to the family and it just be a minor slip up that didn’t even have to be mentioned and further deepen her awareness that she loved Diego with Five realizing he needed to save his family. But no, somehow it became a real relationship 🤨
I think the worst flaw was the lack of episodes Because this could have been okay We needed more stuff from diego and lila after lila comes back from the subway
i think it’s on brand for five to fall in love with someone after being in an apocalyptic setting, considering his last “relationship.” but yeah i felt the kiss coming and i was so devastated when it happened 😭 it was not needed at all
Ummm....... 5 did do that. Remember we are viewers. We do not control the characters. The writers do that. They wrote the romance. We only react to it.
The most gutting part of this whole Five and Lila situation is that I really enjoyed their dynamic before this. There was something about the way they were so similar in the worst ways and they genuinely hated each other, but then became reluctant friends bc there were parts of each other only they understood. Part of what makes Five so interesting are the contradictions and this friendship only added to this. There was also something about them being able to become friends despite it all. It was weird and they annoyed each other and often genuinely could not stand the other, but there was something there. They were th best if friends. they were mortal enemies. They were terrible. They were family. They were worsties. And then they ruined it. Five's love story was supposed to be his family, but people love to undervalue platonic relationships and it's just really sad bc the siblings' relationships have really been the driving force behind people loving the show and it just seems like the writers didn't care
100%, agreed. I adored their dynamic and this sudden romance takes so much charm and uniqueness out of it. They had an unusual dynamic and it really worked, they knew each other on a very vulnerable level and at their worst and it being entirely platonic made it more special. If Steve Blackman wanted to write a love story, he really should have emphasized how much Five loved his family and how much he endured for them. It was the very core of the series and its selling point. In the end, it feels like despite them being together in that last scene, there was still so much left to explore in the sibling dynamic and their relationship. The series started out as this messy family that still cares despite all the tension and conflicts and with the audience following their journey to heal and overcome the abuse they experienced. And instead of that, we got this whole mess and them deciding that sacrifice is the only way. Just… so disappointing. Thank you for commenting!
The writers said they really wanted to give five a love story… That was literally not needed!!! He was fine as he was!!! If they really wanted that they could’ve done something with Delores or introduce a new character, just not with fcking Lila!!
My biggest issue with this is that Five already HAD a love story! The entire series started in the first place because of his love and devotion to his siblings. That was the foundation of the show. The fact that Blackman doesn’t seem to realize it is weird to me, because it’s the reason why so many people loved the series.
I agree, he totally never cared for Diego and how much it would hurt him.. He was entirely selfish. Sure he’s an asshole but not heartless that he didn’t care about his relationship with Diego..
Some writers (COUGH Steve COUGH) think that every character needs a love interest which isn’t true at all. There are characters that work better without having a love interest like five. I wish more people realize that there are people who don’t need or want romantic love and that’s completely ok
what they should’ve did was made delores a real person who 5 knew from the agency who he worked with and they tried to run off and he was brainwashed be they needed him for missions and her killed and created her in the different timeline bc he faintly remembered her and in the end she exist and that’s his love story that would’ve been an a amzing plot
honestly, i think i could’ve overlooked some of the season’s other flaws if this didn’t happen. i was really enjoying the season until lila and five kissed… and then i felt sick to my stomach and had to force myself through the rest. so disappointing… ☹
This honestly seems to be how most fans feel which is fascinating because I don’t think I’ve ever seen one scene just completely ruin the whole show for so many people.
@@golden-prism it just feels like none of the other flaws with this season were as glaring as this. and as soon as it happened it was like poison, seeping into everything else and infecting it. as soon as they kissed i literally felt sick to my stomach and had to force myself to continue watching. for me, it’s just so disappointing that they could fuck up THIS bad that it makes the good stuff about this season feel irrelevant.
@@elliethecat222 Definitely! I feel like even if this wasn't the case, there just wasn't enough good stuff to make up for it any way. It's disappointing to be so invested in a character and their future only to have them act so out of character in the last moment. This might be the worst case of character assassination I've ever seen. Also, thank you for commenting!
Yea, same And the overall ending didn't make sense to the lore of the show. It clearly states that there were other children born with powers, but the father was only able to get them. Too they're the only ones with powers, who have to die to save the world. Didnt make sense.
it's such a baffling and unnecessary choice, i have no idea how writers did not expect fans to be upset over it. the only good thing out of this is getting a new golden video and ranting to heal 😔
Honestly the Five the fandom knows and loves wouldn’t do this to HIS BROTHER. This is the same guy who spent years in the apocalypse trying to find his way back to the present time to protect his siblings. This guy would do anything and everything for his family so this was really out- of- pocket for him. Besides I don’t think he needs another love interest since he’s really known for his tough and independent personality.
For someone who's tough and independent, it sure is odd to get with half a mannequin. Five's concern was always the survival of his family and not their feelings.
Yeah but what you have to remember is that the first time the apocalypse happened Five of course had hope he could stop it but the apocalypse literally kept on chasing them everywhere so of course he'd be quite tired of constantly having to fight a fight that he can't even win because it's keeps following them and think about their perspective. They had no reason to assume they could EVER get back to their family and friends. 5 and Lila only had eachother for 7 years which is longer than Lila even knew Diego. Of course after years of relying on eachother you'd get tired of trying to find a way back when to them they may never get back. They were hopeless and they only had eachother. You can't blame them for the way they acted and another point is that Five the first time round had Dolores a literal inanimate object but this time round he had an actual person to make emotional connections with
@@OscarFenson Lila was with Diego for one year less than she was with Five. Comparing lengths of time is kind of a stretch? Your mentioning of the apocalypse following the academy interests me because Lila was never part of the Umbrella Academy. She was never relevant in the first apocalypse. So, by that logic, did she pretty much sacrifice herself for nothing? As far as the audience knows, it's only the existence of the Umbrella Academy that brought about the apocalypse.
@@VeWrae Firstly with lengths of time what I mean is that people underestimate how much 7 years must feel alone with only eachother to rely on and I meant following those with marigold. I said umbrella academy as an umbrella term.
@@VeWraeexactly. Five always wanted a relationship, so I'm not surprised he got with Lila. Also, Lila has been teasing and flirting with him for a long time. She knew what she was doing
They did Five and Lila dirty. The love story was gross. Lila pretty much knew him since he was what - 14? Yes I know the character of Five was an old man in a teenage boy’s body but still…the actor had been a minor when she started acting with him. Not to mention she was his brother’s wife. His sister in law for crying out loud!! Just creepy with all shades of borderline incestuous and pedo-grooming shit. Gross 🤮
Especially considering it's implied somewhat heavily there was a relationship with the woman who raised her - and yes, while technically supposed to be the same age (both children of the same day/year) he literally, as an adult, murdered her parents in front of this child. Then she was raised by the woman he had a potentially romantic relationship with, then she fell in love with his brother (and I did actually like she and Diego's messy relationship) then suddenly the guy who is twice her age in a body half her age who macked her mom is romantically attached? 🤢 I feel so bad for these two actors - they were fan favorites, and this is how it ends.
oh my god... i'm loving your comments😂😂 like for me too... lila and five were always good as a duo or kinda siblings, and I liked it alot, but this season I hated lila for what she did with diego, and this five doesn't even feel like himself anymore, I'll just pretend the season never came out and this never happened
I hear what you’re saying, but a parallel that ppl aren’t looking at is that when Five was abandoned alone during the first season, he fell in love with a mannequin. So I don’t think it’s super unrealistic for Lila and Five to be together after being alone for 6 years
this seasoned is terrible. What happened to luther wife that he love and recently got married to, he stop loving the one woman that care about him and stop looking for her. Five whole character is about protecting his family, but just he got with his brother wife and wanted to kill him. None of main character had any development, in fact i believe they became dumber, especially FIVE. That dumbest part is when they memory was change by they father, but the writer forget Ben was a ghost with his memory and could had talk to each family member after he die wtf
Sloane was left in the hotel and possibly erased in the end . Luther regressed becoming a stripper in season 4 . I don’t get the time jump 5 years and then no explanation . 6 episodes rushed everything and didn’t satisfy the fans . I don’t get lilah and 5’s relationship. The whole thing was a huge mess .
@@VeWraeeven if he didn’t see who shot him when he was alive, his ghost had to have seen his siblings’ reactions and Reginald’s efforts to make them forget.
The umbrella academy is all about timelines. So I’m just going to pretend that season 4 happened in a different timeline that has absolutely nothing to do with the other seasons. But honestly the ending left me feeling empty. Usually when shows I love as much as the umbrella academy end I’m on the verge of tears, but instead I walked away with nothing. It hurts even more because I was so exited. I watched the season four trailer over and over and I rambled to my friends about how good it was going to be. I even convinced some of them to watch TUA, but now that I’ve seen the last season I feel bad that I told them about it. I just wish that they could have thought of something better, I honestly would have been happier if they just left us on the season three cliffhanger.
Finally. A critic who was enraged as much as I was. Most other critics talk about how disappointing it was. It's as if the were disappointed in their child for poor grades in school. No. This enraged me. I felt disrespected and cheated. It's not a disappointment, it's an insult. Someone stopped caring about the fans of the show. Someone resented the fans that were hoping for another season. Someone, in control, did not like the show so much that they decided to murder it or force someone else to murder it by making the entire existence of the show pointless.
I’m curious if the show runners will say anything. Even Aiden looked done during this season as he played Five. I’m sure the cast hated the romance too. I know David (Diego) hated it and tried to talk the show runner out it. I think Lila also thought it was a joke
I've seen Lila's actress say she though it was a joke in an interview and she was suprised when she found out it was 100% a thing. Also consider they can't say bad things during interviews, so maybe they hate it just as much as us
People forget Aiden was also a fan of the comics. Not only is he probably generally uncomfortable with the ending (since it’s just.. character assassination + weird kissing a grown woman you’ve known since you were a child) but he knows EXACTLY what COULD have happened. This is such a poor translation from media to media.
This entire season was disappointing. I personally enjoyed very little about it, and it's so disheartening because I loved this show and these characters. From introducing storylines that created plotholes, Five and Lila, Ben not having any screen time (in my opinion), and the terrible ending. I'm just so sad this is how it ended. I personally want to rewrite it all.
I'm not against Five having a romantic arc, but with his brother's wife??? And I know he's an old man on the inside but watching such a young looking actor kiss a much older one gave me the heebie-jeebies.
My main issue with him was how much they changed his character. He has always been this sassy, logical and self assured character, Because he grew PRIOR, in the apocalypse, making him solidified as this character who was more assured that others, and this “love changes you 🥺” new attitude of his was way out of character, and the relationship wasn’t rlly anything anyone inherently asked for, so it was unnecessary and confusing
To me, S4 was a mix. There were some parts I loved, like Luther and his dnamic with Diego. The fight at the CIA was exactly the stuff I wanted. But Five and Lila still has me raging. It's creepy and toxic.
I agree, I do that too. For me, this is an alternate universe. But the real Five didn't do that and found a way home. Laila talked to Diego and they strengthened their marital relationship.
@mikimorgz The umbrella academy needing to sacrifice themselves to truly save the world after dooming it 3 or 4 times honestly works imo, but yeah they kinda fumbled it in practice and the post credit scene just ruins it entirely. The fact that marigold still exists just makes it all feel pointless. The post credit scene should've just shown us everybody from the academy living normal lives with the implication being that they were always meant to exist, but just as normal people born from the mothers we saw and an actual father
@NotAzariel not really, they just dropped the ball when it came to the writing. Fives character assassination and Klauses character regression are things that made 1-3 a waste, not self sacrifice in a story about people trying to be heroes and save the world
It’s one thing to have Five and Lila kiss each other then brush it off as like “Oh, we shouldn’t have done this.” And never speak of it again. But it’s another to have them kiss and fully form a relationship in the seven years they were gone looking for other timeline and then come back having it being awkward. Jesus Christ, did Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba approve this?? Also: there’s a 15-year age difference between the two actors and a 20-30 year old age difference between characters. Idk what’s weirder tbh
There was never a fourth (or fifth, I guess) ua comic , so probably not. Giving that Lila wasn’t even an original character from the comics, it was clear what the show producers intentions were from the start.
its crazy to identify with a character so much just to find out the end of their journey is "you shouldn't have been born" like thank you.. like i already haven't heard that in my real life
Five has been my favorite since S1 and yes I feel like this wasn't the Five we know. Five may be an ass to his family but as we know he'd do anything for them, and Five would NEVER do that to his brother. I felt very sad since at the end they died hating each other. And I don't feel like Lila and Diego's marriage was going as bad as they said, yes they had problems but not major ones. As the end Five didn't feel like Five and basically gave up on life and seemed so awkward at at the end. In my mind, they all survived and are happily living together like before.
Five was literally my favorite character up and till he kissed Lila. I didn’t like that, at all. Especially because it didn’t feel natural, it didn’t feel like something either of them would do, Five in particular. Then, I patiently waited for when Five was going to apologize to Diego… but, that never happened. At the end, I felt NOTHING but DISAPPOINTMENT because I literally waited 2 years for it
I honestly agree with you it makes sense that they’d bond in that scenario they were both child soldiers turn time traveling assassins. Five was isolated in the apocalypse for nearly 50 years so it makes sense that he’d be glad to have somebody this time around. Lila never going through that would look to Five for comfort. Even if Lila would cheat on Diego with all these factors, which I don’t think she would, Five would never betray Diego like that. He’d kill every single member of his family, which who hasn’t felt that way towards their siblings, but Five spent a lifetime alone, killed countless people, went borderline insane, trying to get to really connect to his family that he loves so much. Five’s a killer not a torturer and he’d never do that to his brother.
@@VeWrae Yeah but that’s every family. He loves them to death even if he can’t express it verbally. If he were told the only way to save them was to kill them he wouldn’t think twice, but he’d never betray them.
@@VeWraehim not caring about their feelings didn’t mean that he would do things he knew would hurt or offend them though, it just meant when they had hangups about leaving whatever timeline they were in he didn’t think their reasoning was more important than the end of the world. It was less “I’m going to take this action that I know is going to hurt my loved ones bc I don’t care how they feel about it” and more “I know what’s best for my family because I have experience in these matters and they don’t see the bigger picture”
@@VeWraethat’s not true! He loved them. His end goal was for his family to be safe, to be able to live happy lives free from apocalypses. He even flat-out tells Lila in season 3 (referring to Diego), “That idiot may actually love you.” The only reason he grew to tolerate and accept Lila in season 3 was that he knew his brother loved her.
Even if they HAVE to give Five a romantic subplot, they can do it with a new character.. a normal person he met or a working accountant in the cia. Whatever. I still just can't believe that people greenlit this idea.
Episode five felt like a slap to the face after being water boarded. I got really excited for it because episode 4 was kinda Klaus centric and so I thought episode five could be five centric which made be really happy because he was my favorite. And then I actually watched episode 5 and..that happened . even the cast didn't like it, Steve Blackman said he always listens to the actors when they want to change something which is absolutely not true. David castañeda said he was pissed off and angry at the development and he asked Steve Blackman if it really bad to happen. And rita aryu thought it was a joke when she found out. Who was this relationship for. I have genuinely seen like only 5 people who actually like them together.
Lila has always felt like a self insert character and them FORCING a awkward, and extremely out of character relationship attempt with Five, one of the fan favorites, doesn't help that claim, I couldn’t have been the only one who never particularly liked her character and then she contributes to basically making the shows best character look like a fool, this is basically a singular needle in a bundle full of swords but now it annoys me bad
Now that you mention her seeming like a self-insert I see it. Perhaps it's the way acts as though she thinks she's sassy and edgy but just came off as unlikeable and irritating to me.
I feel like the writers forgot how at the beginning of season 3 when Lila was trying to get payback for how Diego betrayed her in her eyes and five had to step in saying how much Diego actually loved her which in result helped save their relationship. Five and Lila were so much better as this chaotic duo of the group and I like the trio that they formed with Diego in season 2. Turning it into a love triangle just screwed with that beloved relationship they had. I also agree with you at the beginning of the video I really wanted the to dive in more on how the trauma of the apocalypse and commission has affected five and how he should have bonded more time with his siblings during the 6 year timeskip.
As someone who IS 35 years old, I would feel *so uncomfortable* kissing a fellow actor who is 20 years old, AND who I acted alongside when they were still a minor. Why would production think that would be even remotely appropriate? Why put the actors through that? For *what?*
I wholeheartedly agree, for Five to get a love arc with Lila (who was already married and had kids) really ruined him. Throughout the comics and the show he has been loyal to not only his family, but to Delores. He already had a lover and we love them they are such a cute ship, but this messes him up with being loyal. Also he is almost TWICE her AGE!!!😭
There was so much wrong with his season! Even the timeline subway, I was expecting it to actually help in the story but it was just used as a plot device to get Lila and Five together. All Five needed to be happy was to retire and be with his family. Also, Five's writing was so beyond strange, in what world would the Five we know abandon his family and the apocalypse just because Lila tells him its over?
five was so incredibly out of character.. i was hoping the subway timeline trains would be used to go through each character's own timeline and fix it to eventually finalize 1 perfect timeline or something
I'm glad I'm not the only one who wanted more bonding between the siblings and wanted them to process their struggles and overcome some things. In a way, watching the characters fall into the same patterns felt repetitive. Sometimes it was one step forward and multiple steps back. It got exhausting after a while. The whole Five and Lila thing gave me the ick. I didn't even finish the episode.
The thing is, they tried so hard (not so hard but-) to create a plot about Five and ended up deciding Five x Lila would be great is absolutely nonsense. The way Five's character was so focused on being mature, logical and yet so caring about his family was ruined. It was almost like I wasn't watching Five but another character which was a doppelgänger of him. It felt completely false the way he became so ignorant and immature took me out of it. The thing is, I wanted him to finally get his retirement and be happy with a possible family he built. But instead what we got from the writers is disappointing in so many ways. I always loved the sibling relationship he had with Diego. It was someway cute and real. The way when that Jen-Ben thingy started trying to hurt the Hargreeves family, Diego and Five started to beat up each other WAS NOT IT. I understand time can change a lot but Five??? Who spent almost his entire life all alone in the apocalypse??? Let alone, the writers had been telling us CLEARLY that Five was almost this unromantic, asexual, old soul guy who was only looking for some peace at the end with his family. HOW DID HE TURN OUT TO BE THAT ONE BACKSTABBER TO HIS OWN BROTHER??? Also, this season was sooooooooo complicated in so many ways that I lost track to the storyline was showing writers put no effort in it. Thank you.
@@VeWrae Well, I see what you mean by that. But again, I don't think anything can replace a human being. The thing is, he had no one around in the apocalypse but this time he has his own family around. He had built a life, a job and loved ones. Still, you have a point. What I never understood is he never showed any love towards anyone(any human being) and it felt a little unfamiliar to me. You know-?
I totally agree, he has always felt aroace coded to me and not to mention he said just a couple episodes prior that he wouldn't get married during the birthday party scene because of Lila and Diego's shenanigans

He was so mature, had a attitude, bossed everyone around, hated lyla initially, i liked when they both were friendly enemies Plus I wished they paired Allison and Luther tougher like the first season. Plus they could've cleared more stuff with the 4 more hours that they could have used from 4 episodes that they didn't provide 😂
Right? Three seasons of setup and the Reveal and then… nothing about it. I wasSo interested in his alien origin and Luther’s quest to find Sloan and getting original Ben back so he could finally have his moment not as a ghost… so much character development destroyed all the way around. Who were these ppl this season?
I knew most people would feel this way, like I did. I'm so frustrated with this season and I thought the same thing while finishing the show yesterday, they ruined Five and made the worst season to what could have been a great ending 😭 at least I still love Klaus, I could watch him for 10 seasons if there was a spin-off of his
i was so grossed out. this family is dysfunctional and they've done shit to each other before but this was on a whole other level. With everything else and they could still be in the same room and there would be some akwardness or bickering but with this?! if they hadn't ceased to exist, can you imagine how Five and Diego could've still been brothers?!They couldn't especially since Five wasn't even sorry or regretful for what he did (if the affair didn't ruin Five for me, this definitely did) . That would've broken the family apart, they wouldn't have been the same anymore. Five is my favorite character from the 1st episode of the 1st season and they ruined him for me in the last season, I'll ever see this character.
I'm going to give my opinion here as someone who always wanted Five and Lila to get together. It's been a while since I watched the other seasons, so I could be wrong, but Five is so out of character this season! It seems like he was replaced by some other depressed Five with low battery! In some scenes, even the simplest ones like the one with "Baby Shark" in the car, I asked myself "but why isn't Five saying anything?" when Five from previous seasons wouldn't hesitate to express his discomfort, whether by cursing Diego, cursing the people who started fighting over the music or the car itself, since Five is a hot-headed old man. And where did all that big ego and "I know what I'm doing, let me drive and follow me" attitude go? I felt like they wanted to give the development of "the purpose was fulfilled, but I still feel lonely and depressed", but they didn't focus on that at all. The clues were the words he threw here and there to Diego about the family he built with Lila, but it simply wasn't enough! We needed moments of him trying to find meaning in the things he did, trying to connect more with his brothers or whatever, anything that would show that Five, who always believed he had the responsibility to save his family and finally managed to do so, didn't really know what to do with the feeling of emptiness that was left in him. Maybe they chose not to show this because of the 6-year time jump right at the beginning, but it was a terrible choice since that was what they wanted to deal with. The worst of all was having Lila as the "cure" for his emptiness. As someone commented, the writers confused "lack of love" with "lack of romantic love". Five's pain is deeper than romantic love alone could fill, but they thought that having this as the main theme (or rather, the only real theme of Five this season, come on) would be an incredible choice. I think the best representation of the consequences of choosing this was Diego confronting Five about Lila and Five with that "I'm already dead inside" look on his face. And don't get me wrong, I was rooting for them to get together, but I expected it to happen in conjunction with their healing process or after it. Their romance was so rushed that even when I thought "well, they were together for 7 years, it makes sense", I didn't completely get it - who came up with the idea of only making 6 episodes? What a pointless piece of shit! But as a fan of the couple, I was still choosing not to think too much about Five's lack of development and screaming with happiness for their moments... until they actually kissed and I felt like I was watching something forbidden. A weird discomfort. That's when I realized there was something wrong with the characters. I always thought a romance with the two of them would be more of "friendly teasing" and an occasional ego battle - after all, it was an Enemies to Lovers, with Five being an arrogant hothead and Lila having no filter and unfazed by his arrogance; And then suddenly, it was like the characters were no longer themselves, but just a generic cute couple. Their kiss was disconcerting, it was like I was watching two inexperienced teenagers kiss! This part of the answer may be controversial, but since they wanted to do the job, they should do it right! I was always okay with the idea of Five being a grown man - Aidan really does a good job - but when they kissed, the way it was done, it really seemed like Five was a younger boy. It was weird and uncomfortable. And after that, the scene where Diego finds out, I just wanted to die. NOTE: I didn't want cheating. Five wouldn't stay with his brother's wife, he wouldn't try to convince her not to go back to her husband and children and if he did, when confronted by his brother, he wouldn't fail to show remorse. He's more of a man than that. They ruined Five's development to put in a half-baked romance that goes against Five's personality. They did everything wrong, the romance I wanted so much... all wrong!
I appreciate this perspective because it really shows that even occasional fans of the ship couldn't appreciate it becoming canon due to how out of character and messy it was. Which really brings back the question of: who was this for? Who was supposed to be happy with this ending and the choices they made for these characters? How was it the ending these characters got? It honestly feels like no one wins in the end, maybe with an exception of some more casual fans who don't care all that much either way or extreme shippers who just wanted to see Five share a kiss with someone, regardless of who that person is. People who genuinely cared about the narrative, thematic consistency, good execution of the tropes, etc. all seem to be upset and disappointed with the final product which is just... Well, sad. Thank you for commenting!
I always thought they were made for each other but have to agree, how it actually happened was rather cringe but guessing the writers wanted to make it look like love and not just lust. As for everyone crying about cheating, the whole lot of them were fairly loose when it came to morals and other than Diego, none of them would have judged (I actually really disliked the way he behaved, it was all about ownership and dented ego). As for the age gap, no one seemed to have a problem with Hazel getting off with a granny.
As an aroace person its sooooo annoying/hurtful when writers, either books or shows act like someone not having a romantic-sexual interest is a punishment, torture or something so they force the character with literally the first other character they have. Like, they couldnt put him in a relationship with a sibling (they tried that with luther!!! god forbid season 1 luther didnt have a romantic interest! (only diego didnt have but laila showed up on season 2)) so they put it with the only other main character, no matter she was in a relationship with HIS BROTHER. At least they could have look more troubled, felt guilty, etc. But they just went for it no issues. it reminds me of percy jackson (if you have read all the books) when leo was the only one that didnt had a girlfriend so in a chapter he ended up on calypsos island somehow (even when only one hero on like 1000 years or something was suppoused to land there and percy already did) and they were dating the seconds?? like that. okay. God forbid a character takes time to develop feelings and a relationship with another character they have chemistry and things in common with...
I had been delaying seeing the Umbrella Academy precisely because the previous season was so... unsatisfying, to say the least. This is disapointing at best and outright disheartening at worst. S1 and S2 were really good and made it seem the creative team behind the show really understood the source material could make something really, _really_ good. I mean I had my doubts about Aidan Gallagher as Five cause, yeah, how is a teenager going to have enough prescence to convince the audience he's a 58 y/o alcoholic time travelling assassin trapped inside the body of a 13 y/o. I was fully prepared for a well meaning but flawed preformance but goddamn Fives was my favourite from the start cause Aidan really pulled it off. Reginald is a horrible father and a worse person, his children are truamatized to hell and back cause he never was a father but a manipulative task master who caused the apocalypse. That's what's interesting, although they laid it way to thick for my taste in S3, and while the S3 end was interesting with Reginald getting what he wanted and the Academy having to go their separate ways cause Dear Old Dad no longer has any need for them, it left question unanswered and did not fully compensate for the feeling of the season being all over the place. But it was an ending that was in line with the tone and style of story we were watching. If anything S4 should have been about 3 things: 1) Reginald explaining himself to the Umbrella Academy, 'cause, lets be honest, that man would not apologize even if it cost him his wife life, _again_ and would try to gaslight them into just dealing with it like he's forced them to do all their lives. 2) Adjusting to their new lives as the S3 finale seems to imply that in this new, _new_ timeline the kids never got any powers and the Umbrella Academy never existed. Does the memories of their new lives replace the old ones? If they meet again, do they recognized each other? How were their lives like? Did Diego still became a Police officer? Did Victor still became a writer? 3) How the lives of those touched by the Academy would have differ: How many children were born without Reginald's intervention? As no Kuggelblitz appear we can assume all the members of the Academy were supposed to exist but what about kids like Lila? Does she exist? How was her life? And what about Sissy and Harlan, how were their lives without Victor in them? (I do hope Sissy dumped that worhtless excuse for a husband, took Harlan and lived with another woman happily ever after) Anyways, I'm deleting this series from my Watchlist, thanks for the headsup
I personally came back to see how they would discover Sloan and how her and Luther would find each other and what she would be doing, etc. for her to not even barely get a mention and we’re all supposed to forget about her because, I don’t know the Actor couldn’t show up? Or the writers couldn’t write better? It was so frustrating to then be introduced to all these new characters I didn’t care about only for them all to be killed off, and I still didn’t care.
Spoilers: Watching the start of the montage I actually thought it was great that things didn't have to always be romantic. Then they had their tongues down each other's throats. I get how it can make sense situationally. But it really didn't work narratively. It confirmed people were dying right then, though. No way Five and Diego were getting past that.
That was my impression as well. Does it make sense given the situation and how devastating this type of isolation is? Sure! But as a part of the bigger narrative AND with only one episode left afterwards to tie all the lose ends and wrap things up? Yeah, I don’t think it works. And I would also argue that Dolores already proved this point about how total isolation affects a person all the way back in season 1 and much more effectively. We don’t need to be told twice.
when five and lila kissed i looked away from the screen i know adrian is 20 now but girl he was literally 14 at the start of the show, and by now lila's like 35...na man.
i was waiting for a video like this!!! after watching season 4 i was SO upset because five's character was my favorite especially him and diego since they were both my favorite characters and seeing five do this one of his family members after doing everything to save them?? him saying "'he'd kill him"' was BAFFLING to me. didnt feel like him at all he would never betray diego or any of his family like that 😞 and all of the factors that made it weird like the age gap with lila and stuff just made everything about him feel wrong but since diego is my favorite character aside from five, diego and lila being my fav pairing, me seeing lila and five as siblings, im slightly more annoyed than the average tua watcher so it feels like everything was ruined for me HAHA but my point still stands i still love five and im just going to pretend s4 never existed😭
Same😭😭 My only consolation is that since this happened in the final season, it's going to be really easy to just pretend that there are only three seasons that matter in canon.
Romance in Umbrella Academy, we got : Inanimate Object ( Five & Dolores), Incest (Luther & Allison), Cheating (Viktor & Sissy), Incest from another timeline (Luther & Sloane, technically they have the same father), Cheating AND Incest (Five & Lila)
i actually do buy that Five would develop feelings for Lila specifically because of giving up getting back to their families. What I don't buy is that Five would ever give up on getting back to their families. Lila, maybe, but not Five, because his track record shows that he never quite gave up on that during the apocalypse and during his time on the commission which easily beat a measly seven years. The unrealistic part isn't he would never betray Diego in this way for me, since because of Dolores representing his desperation for connection and romantic love I actually cannot imagine pretty much anyone in the Academy doing this to Diego. This has nothing to do with brotherly or sibling loyalty but everything to do with the fact that they completely accepted Lila as an Umbrella in every way. That, to me, makes more sense as an explanation for why this doesn't work than "never doing this to Diego" since Diego in a way was essentially dead to them as was everyone else in their worlds to be honest. Add this to the fact that everyone focusing on how this is something happening to Diego goes against what we have learned and what Diego has learned throughout knowing Lila: she's her own person that is separate from him and makes her own decisions. So whilst I do buy this could maybe happen with Five, the there are too many other reasons why it doesn't work and would honestly take hundreds more years easily for this to happen.
I'm not against the idea of Five and Lila (i kinda am tho) cuz they spent 7 yrs blah blah blah all that stuff but what angers me is that was completely out of character for them like ain't no way that Five would hide the way back home to HIS FAMILY WHOM HE'S BEEN TRYING TO SAVE FOR THE LAST 3 SEASON and he would most def NOT be like the strawberries scene 😭🙏 I'm genuinely waiting for them to say "Sike this isn't the last season there's one more and everything in the last one was another timeline" Or sum like that😭
It reminded me of the end of Star vs the forces of evil. The premise was a magical princess from another world. So the writers decided to write an ending that said actually magic is bad so we are going to delete that part of the show. A show about 7 dysfunctional siblings actually its bad they exist so now they dont exist. Arent you glad you watched.
Yeah! And also, I just wanted to point out that ending the show about dysfunctional, mentally unwell and abused siblings having to sacrifice themselves 'for the greater good' is... Not the best look, to be honest. I think there's definitely space for stories with sad endings but the message that these characters who were very clearly abuse victims never get to live happy lives and never truly overcome their abusive upbringing is rather questionable.
@golden-prism Yes and the writers telling us this has to happen because while also writing the rules is just strange. I cared about these characters not some random park in a timeline I'm not invested in. They didn't really do show don't tell. Just showing a bunch of photos of apocalypses and saying this is bad is not the same as actually showing why it is hopeless or what message they were trying to convey. What was the point of this story?!?
@Sh12pen I will check it out. It looks cute! I love TV and cartoons, but they take time to watch. I just don't like them ending like it was a prank I invested my time watching and caring.
While I get that the “relationship” wouldn’t have happened if they hadn’t got lost together, the second one close up showed both their faces together I just found myself thinking, “oh here we go”. I get why Five would have clung to it, considering how he grew so attached to a mannequin after going mad from loneliness… yet this time, he at least had someone with him. And Lila went along with it, I kind of get it as well actually, only out of pure mental survival, yet you can tell she didn’t care enough about Five to want this fully. And yeah, no romantic chemistry in those scenes at all.
I totally agree with you. I didn’t feel like Five would do this, since he sacrificed so much to make his family happy. So seeing Five fall in love with someone that his brother loved so much felt out of character. IT WAS NO NEEDED. I honestly would probably be fine if he fell in love with another girl who has been friends with him since the world reset. I also really wanted Five to express himself and understand what HE wanted in the season, it would feel right because of everything he did for his family. And I also wanted the family to have their weird interactions with each other, the season felt rushed, and we didn’t have enough family time so I felt disappointing This whole show felt disappointing but I don’t wanna hate because I’m honestly happy that they ended this season. *(This season also was a little confusing since they added things that were never explained so that also got on my nerves. Lol)*
The only episode of season 4 I truly enjoyed was episode two. It felt like the chaotic hargreeves siblings actually being a family, with a side of semiautomatic Santa. The rest felt rushed, most plots were unnecessary, and the characters felt incredibly hollow. Five’s character spent 45 years searching for his family in an apocalypse or working under the thumb of the commission and now he’s willing to cheat with his BROTHER’s wife within 7 years? No characters showed growth, and the ending didn’t feel satisfying in the way I had hoped. Some of the family even went out hating each other which was the worst outcome I could’ve asked for.
13:18 this. the only logical reason i can think of why they made five and lila have a romantic situation may be because aiden is "finally old enough". and they knew his fans will eat this up... honestly disgusting. if they wanted to give five a romantic interest they could have done a side plot line with some random girl HIS AGE and show the lila vs diego relationship's difficulties in another way. i can just feel that the actors were also weirded out by this decision.
The season is short so we're just trying to give fans what they want, even though we have to cut certain things out. Proceeds to add subplots and sidequests, that does in fact NOT give the fans what they want. I refuse to believe anyone who has actually watched the show, wrote season 4. I REFUSE. This comes across as one of those jokes "A.I probably wrote it".
It really made it worse that he wasn't remorseful at all, but expected Lila to give up on her children and everything. And when she said it's over, this prick just poofs and ABANDONS HIS ENTIRE FAMILY because of her?! I was so baffled when he did that! The absolute ego-centric AUDACITY of this man.
I’m glad I’m not the only person who hated this. I hated the extended vomit scene. I hated asshole Ben. I hated Claus relapsing and going on a separate storyline again. I really wanted to see the team altogether again, this was the last season & that’s all we wanted above all else. It’s like Umbrella Academy didn’t become the success Netflix hoped for, so they just gave up for this last season. 6 episodes? That’s insane. I’ve never read an Umbrella Academy comic, I only ever started watching the show cause Mary J Blidge was in season 1 😂 and I ended up enjoying the characters and the story, and hung in there til the end. Five and Lila are two of my favorite characters in the show, but I never wanted to see them like this. I hope in the near distant future someone does a new show, or movie, maybe even if it’s animated, and the new creative team can show this property real love.
i would have liked someone in the family to sacrifice themselves, like viktor taking all the marigolds and giving himself to the cleanse and it ends with another funeral like season 1 or something
Yeah it completely ignored their own internal logic of the time travel paradox, you know the one that caused the kugleblitz in the last season. They went and ended their own existence but somehow their kids are still alive? Man it makes no sense.
I thought I am the only who has hard time with this season. They just ruined everything. At the season 3 we had some Five and Lila scenes, there I was hoping that they wouldn't do anything with them. Even if Lila and Diego wouldn't end up together, Five should get a new girl not Lila. First of all Lila's parents were killed by him and she was his brother's girlfriend. They wrapped up their dynamic nicely. Lila and Five being frenemy, Diego and Lila being a married couple. From the trailer I was afraid something is wrong with season 4 and then here we go. What was the point of being lost for 7 years in that subway. It was only for their this wasted subplot. They could just show them they were lost for some months and came back. They discovered the subway and finished that plot. No they had to mess with all the relationships. A three children's mother and the most mentally strong character were cheating. They also showed that Five didn't want to come back. Waah.. They can never justify this plot. Even if Lila and Deigo were having problem in marriage, they didn't stop love each other. And Five needed a girl who can choose him over everything. What the writer was thinking. They didn't give closure to Allison and Ray story. They didn't give closure to Luther and Slaoni story. Then why bother so much time on those. These kind of series has rewatch value. Who now will enjoy the previous seasons !
5 has traditionally been at the core of the plot, solving problems, justifying his upper figure status beautifully. Now he just sits on a subway giving up on everything, offers almost no leadership except guiding the family through their final moments. Monumentally disappointing
At the start of the season i thought Five would get together with that blonde CIA assistant of his. He didnt even get enough screen time so i could remember his name, and i think Five and blonde CIA assistant guy only shared about a line or so, but even this random side character as a romantic interest would have been better for five, if the writers wanted to give him a lovestory so badly They could have even kept the storyline of getting lost in the subway, just with that dude instead of Lila.
If I was calling the shots, Delores would’ve been one of the things slipping into their timeline and Five would’ve found her and they would fall in love yet again. They had so much romantic potential and it was wasted😭
Hi, I basically dropped the season after ep 1 where five and Laila are at the cafe and Diego was in the van. I figured “oh, this is gonna be pretty good drama, it’s such a big misunderstanding and when they reconcile and understand how much of a misundestanding it is, they’ll make a better and stronger family dynamic.” You’re telling me they actually end up hooking up?? What the actual hell lol I’m so glad I dropped it at Ep 1. I thought I’d get back to it when I have more time from work but NAH IM GOOD lol thanks for helping me dodge a bullet and saving my time
I had to stop at the greenhouse scene. wtf were they thinking in the writers room? They have always walked such a fine line when it came to Five only to walk right off a cliff before the finish line.
It’s not only the whole stupid romance thing, it’s also the things five was saying to Diego when he was telling everyone. Like the things he said were so out of character, like all the sudden he hated Diego and saying how he couldn’t give Lila what she needs and it was just awful
The age difference was super weird to me, I knew the actor of Five is the youngest but him being born in 2003 makes me see him as a kid. I didn't like the ending either especially that Diego and Five never got to reconcile as you mentioned.
I felt like Five this season was someone completely different. In my head, Five is someone who isn’t interested in a romance in a normal sense and puts his family above all. His relationship with Deloris was fun and interesting because all he wanted was someone to talk to about everything happening to him without true judgement. While I think his relationship with Lila should have been about his need to let loose and enjoy his abilities, while helping Lila realize she likes taking care of her younger family members. I actually wish she’d gotten more time with everyone but especially Allison. They set her up as the only family member that’s not awkward with her and that both are struggling a little with motherhood so why not pair them up instead? Why not go into Klaus’ relationship with New Ben? Viktor and Luthur with how they feel like outcasts in a family of outcasts? Five and Diego actually working together for once and Five helping Diego with his relationship with Lila? I get they’re dysfunctional, but it would have hit harder if they’d found harmony just before the end of the world hit again. Make them use their new found happiness to bring happiness to the rest of the world. Instead of dying still hating each other and never finding peace.
You said literally everything I was thinking. I think the moment that pissed me off the most this season and showed me just how screwed the writing was was when Five blinks out as the squid monster is approaching Hargreeves mansion. That moment made me so mad because it was so unlike Five to be so selfish and abandon his family at the end of the world because of something as petty as his sister in law choosing her husband over him. THAT is NOT the same Five who travelled across time and space, killed a whole room of people, and constantly put himself in danger in order to save his family. Not to mention like you said it literally added nothing to the story except making the characters, fans, and even the actors upset.
Since the writers really wanted to give five a romantic love arc, what they could have done instead is have him go to another timeline where he meets a girl who's trapped in a wastland by herself like he was except she's actually pretty well off for herself having managed to grow a farm, find animals, and use solar panels to generate electricity. Make it tempting for five to just stay there with her
The romance was unnecessary and frankly uncomfortable, and I don't just think that this is a fan opinion. I read an interview with Lyla's actress where she said that when she was first informed about the romance subplot by a showrunner during the season 3 premier she was convinced it was a joke, I hate to think that the writers would put their own actors in an uncomfortable plot with a 15 year age gap between actors.
I've come to think that Netflix and other companies like to fuck with the finale of their shows just so people are so pissed off at the end that they don't keep asking for more, because wtf was this season?!?!?
Everybody in this season came off so TIRED. So DONE. So ready for their own show to finally just end. So drained of any of what made the siblings' dysfunction and banter the most fun part of the previous seasons. For me, it made the whole season a depressing slog to sit through on top of the actual storytelling issues on paper.
I don't deny that Five and Lila would act that way when put in that situation (that doesn't bother me, actually), BUT WHY put them in that situation? It does nothing for the plot! If they were going to do that, they should have done it at the end of season 2 or beginning of season 3. Not in the second-to-last episode! Having a romantic plot with Five was always going to be problematic because he's a 65-year-old man in a 20-year-old's body. If he was with someone who looked the same age, it would be creepy because it would be someone who is a senior citizen mentally, with a teenager. Having him be with someone his age (mentally) would make the 20-year-old actor be kissing a senior citizen, which would just look wrong. They split the difference the best they could, but it wasn't necessary at all to even have this happen. All that said, this isn't what ruined season 4 for me though: what ruined season 4 for me was that it wasn't fun. It was depressing, not funny, was missing a dance scene, had very little use of their actual powers, and did a horrible job of explaining things: Sloane, Ray, the fact that they all seemed to just brush off Allison being a villain, how the hell did Jennifer get inside the squid? How were timelines bleeding together? Why did Klaus go back to doing drugs-- it didn't seem like he was still seeing ghosts? And so many more issues...
Five X Lila makes no sense whatsoever. Yes they had tension, but not romantic tension. More like “2 deadly assassins who hate each other but have to work together sometimes” tension. Seriously them getting together was so utterly pointless. Also wasn’t Aiden Gallagher 19 during filming? Why would anyone think that was ok? I remember thinking that Delores was a good way to handle Five’s dating life bc there would be no scenario in which giving him a human love interest wouldn’t be weird. This was weird. I still consider season 3 to be the worst season, but season 4 is only like 2% better. Seriously that pairing felt like something from a 12 year olds fanfic. They literally just went off for 7 years, had a random romance, then came back. It was terrible for the plot, inappropriate for the actors and characters, and wasn’t even done well. One of Five’s major character traits (probably his biggest one actually) is that he would do literally anything for his family. Also he’s so out of character in season 4 like the way he acts with Lila is so different from how he’s ever acted. Why was this the thing they decided on?
Five definitely deserves a love story, just not with someone we know, especially his BROTHER'S WIFE?? wtf was Steve Blackman thinking?I think that if they brought Dolores to life it would be fire..At least it wouldn't be so..uncomfortable like this one..idk...
I'm sorry for the actors because that must've been such an awkward spot to be put in by the writers. And I think it shows because there was absolutely no passion, desire or chemistry in those kisses. They were such a good pair of besties, they had a great dynamic just for it to be destroyed in the end for no pay off because they just sacrifice themselves anyway.
I always thought It defied Five's character infinitely. Going back to past and preventing apocalypse to meet his family was his fuel, although it broke him. And after he came back from 7 years stucked in time his reaction was just annoyed??? Wasn't getting back to his original time set to meet the other? His *love arc* was his siblings. It was Five's soft spot through his rough exterior.
Absolutely agree. Most series have a hard time landing the plane on the finale but rarely do you see such beloved characters get viciously undercut with their development like this. I’ve seen it another time with GOT in S8 where characters finished redemption and plot arcs just to be fucked over. I hate this season. Not to mention where was Sloane? The fact she was in it ruined Luthers arc. His character was so ridiculously left out to dry that he basically played comic relief with Diego while he was being cucked. Ugh this was so bad.
Five has been my favorite character since the beginning, and he felt so strangely unlike himself in the last few episodes. I'm not aghast at the idea that two people alone together for seven years would develop a romantic relationship of some sort, but Five always put his siblings above all else, even when he couldn't stand them, and it doesn't make any sense the casual way he doesn't seem to care about Diego's feelings whatsoever. Five's true love was always his family, and he had a companion in Dolores for decades. Falling for Lila served zero narrative purpose and did nothing for Five's character.
I completely agree that five was the last character that needed a love interest. But if they had to got here why couldn’t they have just introduced a new character for example: while working at the cia he met a girl they became friends or worked as partners, maybe after they drank the marigold she saw him blink accidentally or took her with him by accident. He then took her to the family meeting and told her about everything then they got stuck together for 7 years. that way they wouldn’t have ruined the relationship between Lila and Diego, and five and Diego (one of my favourite duos by the way) wouldn’t have died hating each other, five wouldn’t have had his heart broken and would have had a happy ending. Also I understand where they wanted to go with the season but how they went about it is my problem they definitely needed 10 episodes to fully explore the story and make the stakes a high as they have been the last 3 seasons. If it was done in the right way it could have been a really poetic and beautiful and heartbreaking ending that the thing they needed to do to stop this was to die but they throw it in the last 20 minutes and expect us to care. Yes I cried a lot at the end of the show but I think I’m more upset about the fact that a show I have loved for 5 years since it came out is not only over but that it didn’t end in a good way. I already know that the ending of stranger things will break my heart and hurt but I also know that it will at least be a good sad ending, this didn’t have this it had no closure for the characters or the audience and no satisfaction. I’m also so sad at the fact that now I will never be able to go back and watch the show from that start and see the characters in the same way I did before specially five and Diego, their scenes together are some of my favourites in the show and now I’ll never see those again without knowing that five betrayed Diego and they died hating each other like what kind of ending is that. It feels like this season neglected the things that drew people to this show, the fun fight scenes with great music and the chaotic funny family moments. When I watched the show for the first time I remember getting to the scene in the donut shop when five killed all the commission guys thinking to myself I’m going to love this show, and we only got one memorable fight scene in the season which was Luther and Diego in the cia, like think of how many iconic fight scenes there were in the first 3 seasons , griddys donuts, the shop, hazel and chacha attacking the house, Diego and their dad, Lila and five, the sweeds at the meeting, the board room, young five vs old five and so so many more and that’s just the fight scenes how many other scenes had great music in an iconic scene, five getting trapped in the apocalypse, all the dance scenes, five breaking out of the commission, hazel and chacha setting the eye lab place on fire and again so many more. Those scenes and the family dynamics are the main pull of the show and they completely ignored those. I have many more gripes about this season and I’m sure I’ll think of move and add them to this later, even though this is extremely long already just needed to vent as no one I know in my personal life has either watched season 4 yet or the show or thinks I’m silly for caring so much. ❤❤
I still love the show, nothing could kill my love for it. But Five and Lila were incredibly unnecessary romantically. It's one of those cases of writers not recognizing that platonic and familiar love is just as important and special as romantic love is. Yes he could have a love arc but it didn't have to be romantic, you mentioned that he always loved his family and I completely agree with you. And it kinda sucks to watch the forced romance plotline because it makes me (and others probably) feel like platonic love comes second to romantic love. When really, they both can be equally wonderful.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼I couldn't say it better
@@golden-prism And really what was the point of the romance with Lila. It went nowhere. It only caused hostility with Diego with no resolution as brothers before they “sacrificed themselves. I HATED THAT THEY WERE SNUFFED OUT STILL FEELING ANGER TOWARD EACH OTHER. WTF!! They could have explored Five with a different person…NOT LILA 🤦🏻♀️
he was the best character, but only sometimes good in some seasons when he was written well, haha
The worst thing about it is that Five and Diego died hating each other
for real. this is what really breaks my heart.
No, they didn't. They were angry, but it was clear Diego was aware of the situation, despite feeling betrayed. Hate is too strong.
@@Thathumanoverthere1701 During the big fight with Monster Bennifer, they were trying to kill eachother
The fact that Five had more chemistry with a mannequin than Lila says everything...
Dolores was a real one dats why lmaooo
No, the really did. Especially in season 3. Just not romantically
Real. We need the sassy moody five back. Not a five that is more like Aidan that five!
oh my god i thought the exact same thing!!!
I think that it’s showing that five is maturing and becoming more of an actual adult because even though he is 68 he doesn’t act like it because he never had a stable life where he could mature into an adult
Yeah!

I think the worst flaw was the lack of episodes
Because this could have been okay
We needed more stuff from diego and lila after lila comes back from the subway
Hot take: I’m okay that they kissed
i think it’s on brand for five to fall in love with someone after being in an apocalyptic setting, considering his last “relationship.” but yeah i felt the kiss coming and i was so devastated when it happened 😭 it was not needed at all
@@javadrav8913ur okay with cheating?
He also already had a love story with Dolores. Yes, it counts. After seeing what he's seen, he doesn't need one more than that.
what they should’ve did was made delores a real person who 5 knew from the agency who he worked with and they tried to run off and he was brainwashed be they needed him for missions and her killed and created her in the different timeline bc he faintly remembered her and in the end she exist and that’s his love story that would’ve been an a amzing plot
honestly, i think i could’ve overlooked some of the season’s other flaws if this didn’t happen. i was really enjoying the season until lila and five kissed… and then i felt sick to my stomach and had to force myself through the rest. so disappointing… ☹

@golden-prism It’s so sad, now I feel like I won’t be able to watch the other seasons without feeling sick to my stomach.
Yea, same
And the overall ending didn't make sense to the lore of the show.
The healing properties of a proper rant are truly something else
🤢
I feel so bad for these two actors - they were fan favorites, and this is how it ends.
Can't be considered pedo or illegal but it sure is weird.
She's 35 and he's 20
She was 30 was he was 15 playing five initially
oh my god... i'm loving your comments😂😂 like for me too... lila and five were always good as a duo or kinda siblings, and I liked it alot, but this season I hated lila for what she did with diego, and this five doesn't even feel like himself anymore, I'll just pretend the season never came out and this never happened
I hear what you’re saying, but a parallel that ppl aren’t looking at is that when Five was abandoned alone during the first season, he fell in love with a mannequin. So I don’t think it’s super unrealistic for Lila and Five to be together after being alone for 6 years
The way I’m finding out this through here, oh my god that’s vile. The show runners really looked at Luther and Alison and learned nothing, huh
this seasoned is terrible.
If I remember correctly, Ben's back was turned, so he wouldn't have known the circumstances of his death well enough to describe it.
Bro what about STAN????

Yep 👍🏼 all of this
Say it louder for the executives in the back 📢
Agreee. I want to see RAGE
Ironic how he got Character Assassinated considering that he was a hitman.
I’m curious if the show runners will say anything. Even Aiden looked done during this season as he played Five. I’m sure the cast hated the romance too. I know David (Diego) hated it and tried to talk the show runner out it. I think Lila also thought it was a joke
wait where'd you hear this?
I've seen Lila's actress say she though it was a joke in an interview and she was suprised when she found out it was 100% a thing. Also consider they can't say bad things during interviews, so maybe they hate it just as much as us
People forget Aiden was also a fan of the comics. Not only is he probably generally uncomfortable with the ending (since it’s just.. character assassination + weird kissing a grown woman you’ve known since you were a child) but he knows EXACTLY what COULD have happened. This is such a poor translation from media to media.
@@goblinguy3103 well, time to read the comics then I guess :)
There is need for your fan fiction to rewire all our brains from this trash season
It's creepy and toxic.
im just going to pretend that the kiss and romance never happened. they are just besties living together and trying to find a way back.
I agree, I do that too. For me, this is an alternate universe. But the real Five didn't do that and found a way home. Laila talked to Diego and they strengthened their marital relationship.
Season 4 never exists to me.
Nah the ending was great ngl
@@Lunteer The ending made no sense!
@@Amartin-mu6ojnot really them sacrificing themselves is such a waste after season 1-3 let’s not get started on the loopholes there were
@NotAzariel not really, they just dropped the ball when it came to the writing.

Literally. The fact that they’re adopted too under really weird circumstances… talk about a kick in the teeth…
Five didnt even need a love story, he already had people he loved, his family😭
Five was literally my favorite character up and till he kissed Lila. I didn’t like that, at all. Especially because it didn’t feel natural, it didn’t feel like something either of them would do, Five in particular.
Then, I patiently waited for when Five was going to apologize to Diego… but, that never happened.
At the end, I felt NOTHING but DISAPPOINTMENT because I literally waited 2 years for it
Honestly Lila having no chemistry with 5 is a relief, thank god shdoet hve chemistry with the preteen she filmed with
I honestly agree with you it makes sense that they’d bond in that scenario they were both child soldiers turn time traveling assassins.
Five's concern was always the survival of his family and not their feelings.
Delores must be mad
I didn't think he needed a love arc at all.
Always thought five was jus an asexual 😭

I also agree with you at the beginning of the video I really wanted the to dive in more on how the trauma of the apocalypse and commission has affected five and how he should have bonded more time with his siblings during the 6 year timeskip.
straight up i'm going through the five (HAH) stages of grief right now lmao
AO3 save us all please 😂
I hated how smug he was about being in a relationship with his brothers wife. Part of me really enjoyed seeing Diego fight him.
Thank you.
This unromantic asexual man was with a mannequin.

If anything S4 should have been about 3 things:
1) Reginald explaining himself to the Umbrella Academy, 'cause, lets be honest, that man would not apologize even if it cost him his wife life, _again_ and would try to gaslight them into just dealing with it like he's forced them to do all their lives.
(I do hope Sissy dumped that worhtless excuse for a husband, took Harlan and lived with another woman happily ever after)
Anyways, I'm deleting this series from my Watchlist, thanks for the headsup
I personally came back to see how they would discover Sloan and how her and Luther would find each other and what she would be doing, etc. for her to not even barely get a mention and we’re all supposed to forget about her because, I don’t know the Actor couldn’t show up? Or the writers couldn’t write better? It was so frustrating to then be introduced to all these new characters I didn’t care about only for them all to be killed off, and I still didn’t care.
Spoilers:
Watching the start of the montage I actually thought it was great that things didn't have to always be romantic.
We don’t need to be told twice.
when five and lila kissed i looked away from the screen
i know adrian is 20 now but girl he was literally 14 at the start of the show, and by now lila's like 35...na man.
This (and Game of Thrones) shows how bad endings can ruin a show: last impressions are as important as first impressions.
i was waiting for a video like this!!! after watching season 4 i was SO upset because five's character was my favorite especially him and diego since they were both my favorite characters and seeing five do this one of his family members after doing everything to save them?? him saying "'he'd kill him"' was BAFFLING to me. didnt feel like him at all he would never betray diego or any of his family like that 😞 and all of the factors that made it weird like the age gap with lila and stuff just made everything about him feel wrong
but since diego is my favorite character aside from five, diego and lila being my fav pairing, me seeing lila and five as siblings, im slightly more annoyed than the average tua watcher so it feels like everything was ruined for me HAHA but my point still stands i still love five and im just going to pretend s4 never existed😭
Same😭😭
My only consolation is that since this happened in the final season, it's going to be really easy to just pretend that there are only three seasons that matter in canon.
Creepy writer and showrunner
You forgot Hazel and an old granny.
i actually do buy that Five would develop feelings for Lila specifically because of giving up getting back to their families.
Five after 45 freaking years in the apocalypse: comes back to help his family
Five after only 7 years with Lila: *betrays his family*
I'm not against the idea of Five and Lila (i kinda am tho) cuz they spent 7 yrs blah blah blah all that stuff but what angers me is that was completely out of character for them like ain't no way that Five would hide the way back home to HIS FAMILY WHOM HE'S BEEN TRYING TO SAVE FOR THE LAST 3 SEASON and he would most def NOT be like the strawberries scene 😭🙏
I'm genuinely waiting for them to say "Sike this isn't the last season there's one more and everything in the last one was another timeline" Or sum like that😭
Well bcs of the ending, that sadly cannot happen😭
You should watch the show "fangbone" which is basically what star vs wishes it could have been
@Sh12pen I will check it out. It looks cute! I love TV and cartoons, but they take time to watch. I just don't like them ending like it was a prank I invested my time watching and caring.
@@Tiniestwombat fangbone came out before Star Vs and does the reverse isekai trope very well! Don't worry about it, it's gonna be great
While I get that the “relationship” wouldn’t have happened if they hadn’t got lost together, the second one close up showed both their faces together I just found myself thinking, “oh here we go”.
I don't get it at all. His character did not need this. He was my favorite because his storyline was caught up in a bunch relationship bs.
David Castañeda was even pissed about the love between 5 and lila, and asked if they were sure about it.
I haven't seen a single person who actually liked Lila and Five or even asked for it, why did they even think it was a good idea????
13:18 this. the only logical reason i can think of why they made five and lila have a romantic situation may be because aiden is "finally old enough". and they knew his fans will eat this up... honestly disgusting. if they wanted to give five a romantic interest they could have done a side plot line with some random girl HIS AGE and show the lila vs diego relationship's difficulties in another way. i can just feel that the actors were also weirded out by this decision.
They not only ruined Five, but also the entire show. Season 3 was in general not very good, but this season was awful.
I refuse to believe that it was the actual five hargreeves we used to know in season 4
They also ruined the entire show with that stupid ending.
i would have liked someone in the family to sacrifice themselves, like viktor taking all the marigolds and giving himself to the cleanse and it ends with another funeral like season 1 or something
Five and Lila having an affair was so out of pocket and totally inconsistent with Five's character. I was so disappointed by that choice.
At the start of the season i thought Five would get together with that blonde CIA assistant of his. He didnt even get enough screen time so i could remember his name, and i think Five and blonde CIA assistant guy only shared about a line or so, but even this random side character as a romantic interest would have been better for five, if the writers wanted to give him a lovestory so badly
They could have even kept the storyline of getting lost in the subway, just with that dude instead of Lila.
I figured “oh, this is gonna be pretty good drama, it’s such a big misunderstanding and when they reconcile and understand how much of a misundestanding it is, they’ll make a better and stronger family dynamic.”
You’re telling me they actually end up hooking up??
I didn't like the ending either especially that Diego and Five never got to reconcile as you mentioned.
oh he's born in 2003? i thought he literally turned 18 right before they started filming, but he's 21
They should of stopped at season three
Since the writers really wanted to give five a romantic love arc, what they could have done instead is have him go to another timeline where he meets a girl who's trapped in a wastland by herself like he was except she's actually pretty well off for herself having managed to grow a farm, find animals, and use solar panels to generate electricity.
Have I watched Umbrella Academy seasons 1-4? No. Will I watch this video analysis on a character assassination? Ye
Love the spirit! Hope you like it 👌
LoL you’ve done better than the rest of us having to wash our brains
Don't worry, folks. Season 4 is a false timeline and never happened.
they massacred my boy 😭😭😭
S4 was pretty anti climatic, I just wanted them all to be happy not disappear from existence
"Only an idiot would leave that behind and Lila is no idiot" Episode 2. Aged like milk
