Aztec Camera - Somewhere In My Heart Reaction

- In this video we're checking out Aztec Camera. We both agree there must be at least one song from this band we've heard. They were talked about often on our favourite TV station in the 80's, Muchmusic. Somehow, we don't remember a song from them. Well, we'll figure it out here. Enjoy!

Deep And Wide And Tall and Working In A Goldmine are my two favourite Aztec Camera songs!
Roddy Frame is one of the best songwriters of the last 40 years.
Didn't Cole Porter die a bit before that? 😼
We could send letters, Christ what a song
Oblivious is another great song by aztec camera
Here is another good tune from Aztec camera "Good Morning Britain" This one featuring special guest Mick Jones (of Big Audio Dynamite and The Clash). 1990
Just one of the best pop songs ever.
Still sounds fresh today.
One of the best songs of the 80s reminds of being 17 and that guitar solo wow ! From Scotland
“Walk out to winter” live on the OGWT is probably their finest hour, also showcases Roddy’s guitar work
Also the 'loaded' cover version of Van Halen's 'Jump!' 😊👍 And the OGWT version of 'Walk Out To Winter' is the one starting with the camera on the monitor screen of their then state-of-the-art Fairlight sampler, isn't it? 😀
One of my favourite pieces of Roddy's guitar work (other than on High Land Hard Rain, of course!) is the solo on "Let Me Put Your Arms Around You" from Edwyn's debut "solo" album "Hope & Despair":

BTW I *love* this quote from an interview of Roddy way back:
"I guess what you’re referring to is that sort of folky, acoustic guitar element. I mean, I love guitars. I really love to play, so I was really into that. There were gasps and sighs when I played these gigs in Glasgow and I pulled out a 12-string. People hadn’t seen those for a while, and here was this 16-year-old kid playing one."
Great upbeat song. Another, more lyrically heavy one is 'Good morning Britain' with Mick Jones (ex Clash). It's a commentary on the state of Britain in 1990, named after a daily light entertainment TV news and talk show. I love it!
Yes Chris , he’s a proud son of Scotland 🏴
👍🏴
"from Westwood to Hollywood" Westwood is in my home town of east Kilbride, where Roddy frame is from. Brilliant song 👍👍👍
I had the privilege to see Roddy Frame as a solo artist in 2014, lovely warm intimate poetic songs, I recommend checking out a song called Surf by Roddy Frame
Roddy Frame& Aztec Camera were so under-rated as a band and as musicians, i think this song was their biggest hit, but they had other great hits from the early 80s that had that New-Wave sound such as, Oblivious, Walk out to winter, and also Spanish Horses that are definitely worth a listen to👍
Aztec Camera personify the term underrated. Another brilliant Scottish band if you like funk, APB.
I knew the name of the band, couldn't tell you a song they sung, soon as it started i knew it instantly and even knew quite a few of the words, this tune was played everywhere back in the day!
This was a bit for Roddy & the lads. I really like " Still On Fire " from the second album , Knife which was Produced by Mark Knopler. * Hit !
I had that album first; 'Still On Fire' and 'The Back Door To Heaven' were my favourites. I've always preferred the debut 'High Land, Hard Rain', though, as it wasn't as synth-heavy 🙂
@The Mighty 'V' knife 🔪 is definitely an 80's Production as is album # 3
@@davidellis5141 - And I'd bought 'Knife' only in '94 or even '95, when '80's' simply sounded dated! 😅
@@mightyV444 I remember that with the fake drums 🥁 on Black Sea 🌊 by XTC ..Normally Steve Lillywhite got such a good drum sound but he went all in with the Simmons drums on that one.
@@davidellis5141 - Yes! Everybody had thought back then that Simmons' were the drums of the future - while in truth they sooo would put a big *'80's'* stamp on all of those productions, making many of them sound terribly dated now 😅 Even The Damned had used them! 😆 I'd have to listen back to 'The Black Sea', though; I remember the opener 'Respectable Street' having natural drums but with that Lillywhite-/Padgham-typical big, gated drum sound 😀 I'd played my 17-year-old Son some stuff from Van Halen's '1984' album earlier today, and even *that* has loads of Simmons sounds on it! 😄
Two words: Classic Pop!
Brings to mind another band, and that's China Crisis, their most well known song Black Man Ray,about the surrealist artist photographer Manray.
From Westwood to Hollywood, He came from Westwood in East Kilbride Scotland
Happy 60th birthday to Roddy Frame, today (29th January). 🎉
A bona fide Pop classic, timeless stuff.....and from my neck of the woods!
Try, Oblivious next!
A bit too poppy for me.
@@SPKdesign1 "Oblivious, you stand before us in the Dock accused of being too poppy. How do you plead?"
"Unashamedly Guilty Your Honour"
"Quite right too, you are free to go"
They call us lonely when we're really just alone - great lyric
@@charlesappleby8049 Gone are the days of Firing Squads.
@@charlesappleby8049 - I love that! 😄👍
@@SPKdesign1 - I was telling someone only about two hours ago about the past-life dream I'd had a few years ago about being stood before a WWII firing squad and waking up in the exact moment the first bullet hit my chest 😬
Another great Scottish band
Westwood is in East Kilbride near Glasgow if memory serves … 👀
Hollywood … eh .. not so sure 😅
Great track from main man Roddy Frame
👍🏴
I believe you can get there by bus from Killermont Street... 😸
@@scotmark 👍🏴
He's Scottish. From East Kilbride, near Glasgow.
Never heard this song back in the day, but only heard it recently in one of those forgettable shark movie made in the past 10years.
Scotland had a "scene" in the early 80's which Glasgows Postcard Records facilitated. The music was generally Pop Music of a superior nature.
Aztec Camera, Orange Juice, Josef K, Go Betweens all had songs released by Postcard.........not sure how Go Betweens gatecrashed the party though.
I remember 'Rip It Up' by Orange Juice 😀 And their frontman Edwyn Collins had a Hit with 'A Girl Like You' in the mid 90's 🙂
@@mightyV444 Yes those two songs were more or less the sum total of Collins' hits.
Like Roddy Frame , Edwyn Collins was a gifted songwriter, his first solo album Hope and Despair is a bit of an overlooked gem, it's opener Coffee Table Song is well worth a few listens.
@@charlesappleby8049 didn't he have a brain aneurysm or something? He had to learn how to walk and talk again I seem to remember.
@@Sandy-dd4le Yes he had a severe health issue which left him debilitated, not sure what the prognosis was.
He featured in a documentary a few years back highlighting his problems, very moving.
@@charlesappleby8049 I had to go look a few things up, seems it was a haemorrhage, not an aneurysm, that left him with pretty severe language difficulties...there was a point he could only say four things, yes, no, his wife's name, and the phrase, the possibilities are endless. Which is the name of the documentary! That's some pretty Scottish humour!
I need to track it down now.
The best band high cuality
Huh! I had remembered this song waaayyy poppier! Especially compared to their earlier stuff! And despite not really having expected to, I actually did quite enjoy hearing it again now! 😀👍
As I suspect you *still* haven't visited young Justin's channel, here's a link to *his* recent Aztec Camera reaction video, about their song 'Oblivious': ua-cam.com/video/7ZZWHYQyGEo/v-deo.html 😁
By the way, they'd also released quite an interesting remake of Van Halen's song 'Jump!', not long after the latter had been released, in '84. The proper version to look for is the 'Loaded' one 😊
'Good Morning Britain'(with Mick Jones) and 'Oblivious' would be worth a reaction vid'
written in just 20 minutes. incredible
Roddy played this solo but it needs 24 frets and the Gretsch suits the image better. There is a live version where he plays a modified solo on a Telecaster.
Check out the full version of his cover of Van Halen's "Jump" where he tears the Gretsch a new one...
We love Van Halen's Jump!
Thank you for reacting to Aztec Camera. Roddy Frame is a great songwriter! I would highly recommend their songs, "Oblivious" ", "Good Morning Britain" (with Mick Jones) and "Spanish Horses".
"Oblivious" and The Lotus Eaters "The First Picture Of You" are two of the finest singles of 1983!
@@CAdams6398 Yes, I have always loved that Lotus Eaters song. I remember that it was a favourite of Annie Nightingale on her Sunday evening radio show, back in the 80s. It wasn't until years later that I managed to find a CD copy of their album, "No Sense Of Sin".
Hard-Ons - Girl In A Sweater (audio + video merge 2023)
One of my favourite songs from the mid 80's from a Sydney band I used to see live. Thanx.
It needs more cow bell.
Have you heard of Bedouin Soundclash?
They are a bit light for me but they have a couple of songs that I quite liked but I think that you will like them.
"Natural Right (Rude Bwoy)" sounds like Bryan Adams doing his best impression of The Clash doing reggae and
they also do a reasonable attempt at covering "Money Worries" by Ernest Wilson from aboot 67 or 69ish.
I won't say where they are fi as I've been a bit off with that but it's a country you know well.
We've heard of them.
'We could send letters' is a good one if you want to do it in the future.
ua-cam.com/video/EZXNr4aa2wk/v-deo.html
Great Scottish band .
I popped in here to make the same recommendation!
Although "Somewhere..." is brilliant mix of pop and actual great music, "Letters" is less commercial and more heartfelt and has been a fan fave since the beginning.
How about some Altered Images? See those eyes, I could be happy.
Especially the 12" Dub mixes ! The genius of Martin Rushent
Hmmm, strange; I was sure they'd already reacted to at least *one* Altered Images song!? Must be a case of the Mandela Effect, though! 😅
@@mightyV444 At the beginning of the 12" mix of I Could Be Happy .. the 5 year old son of Martin appears giving a hearty ..1 2 3 4 !!
@@davidellis5141 - Hmmm... I just listened to it but didn't hear anyone counting in!? Great remix, though! 😃👍 I've always loved that song 😊 ...holy moly, and I just realised how old it really is! 1981? I was only 11!! 😅
@@mightyV444 Sorry ..It's The See Those Eyes 👀 one !
I think you guys should listen to 'the universal' by Blur. Peace ✌
...and also 'Coffee And TV' , and 'Oily Water' 😁 No doubt they've already heard 'Song 2'. And heaps! 😄
@The Mighty 'V' Oily 🛢 Water is classic from Modern Life Is Rubbish 🗑 ! Like the treatment on the vocals 👍
@@davidellis5141 - And also the double-tremolo effect on the guitar! 😀 There's a great song-by-song video on the 'Produce Like A Pro' channel about 'Modern Life Is Rubbish', featuring Graham Coxon 😊👍
@The Mighty 'V' I'm subbed to it have to go back & watch it .. this exchange should lead to my 5G 📱 recommending it ..The Spy 🕵️♀️ that it is !
I think Girls and boys world be a good start with an introduction to BLUR
ua-cam.com/video/WHho3_ZRKZ0/v-deo.html
Kia ora hello my friends hay here's one half of a comparison so this version against Queens Bohemian rhapsody
Sax was best in the 80s
Come on bigman smile its a classic 😂
Yep, Digital killed the video star just like video killed the radio star as claimed by The Buggles... :)
The Buggles sound again! ua-cam.com/video/_z9xSN5hPzQ/v-deo.html (another Aztec Camera classic)
I recommend you two songs..
1 Rondò veneziano - Casanova ua-cam.com/video/1RtIQohcehw/v-deo.html
2 Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells 3 live ua-cam.com/video/ctFnr0hv8aM/v-deo.html
One of music’s best lines
- you can’t buy time, but you can sell your soul, and the closest thing to heaven is to rock and roll.
We called it Scottish blue eyed soul.
