Oh the summer of 1984! I was 11 years old in my backyard in Scotland pitching tents made from bedsheets and enjoying every song that came from the transistor radio next to me. This was one of the best songs of the year. Coincidentally I was thinking the other day that this song should be reviewed!
This was co-written by Siobhan Fahey of Bananarama and Shakespeare Sister. The girl in the cafe is a singer in her own right. Clare Grogan. The band she’s in is called Altered Images and you should check out theirs songs ‘Happy Birthday’ and ‘I Could Be Happy’.
For any UK watchers who know what Im talking about, this will forever be the theme song of Terry Wogan's TOGs (Terry's Old Gits). Terry Wogan was a beloved and much missed morning DJ on the BBC and he'd always play this for his fans - the TOGs. It always makes me smile and I loved both your reactions. Thank you ❤
The daughter in the video was Claire Grogan, she was a singer for altered images, but also an actor. If you want a real feel good movie, check out Gregory's Girl that she is in, a wonderful Scottish film.
I remember the cafe owner Stratford Johns from a very popular police series called Z cars in the 1960's, and a couple of later spin offs - he was a much loved television personality here in the UK for many years, and it was great to see you younger people enjoying his appearance in this video.
Re-released in the UK in 93 after being used in an advert and was a bigger hit than the first time round. Also check out their other 2 hits, "Cath" and "I'm Falling"
Good to see actor Stratford John as the cafe owner. He was in many shows but was rememebered for playing Charlie Barlowe in the cop show Z-Cars and its spin off Softly Softly Task Force,
I love this song. I have fond memories of when it rereleased in 1993. Reminds me of my first girlfriend. We'd got together on a school trip to Granada studios in Manchester England. Think of it as a dollar store universal studios, lol. At the end of the tour we all went out into the courtyard and there was a big stage. The radio was playing through the speakers outside and this song come on. I think it had just gotten to No1 the day before. Anyway, Gemma got up on stage to dance and I refused to get up as I was a bit of a shy kid at the time. I just sat back and watched her dance to the song. I get transported back to that day whenever I hear this. Great memories from my youth.
@@davidhuggan6315 I was a bit too young the first time it released. I think I was four year's old and at that time i was listening to roland rat, rat rapping and black lace, lol. I remember the car advert. Man, the adverts back then were great at making songs famous again, like levi, Wrigleys chewing gum and car ads.
@TheRetroManRandySavage Indeed. I remember The Hollies, The Clash, Steve Miller Band and Marvin Gaye all having hits years after the songs were released. Plus The Righteous Brothers and Roxette charting again after their songs were in movies in the cinema or on TV.
I love this track. The young lady in the cafe is Clare Grogan. She fronted and band called Altered Images. Like The Bluebells, she is Scottish. You might want to check out some of the Altered Images stuff, including "I Could Be Happy", "See Those Eyes" and "Happy Birthday"
This song takes me back to the 80’s and my summers spent with my cousins in Scotland. The song is still on the old jukebox in a cafe at a small tourist town on an island on the river Clyde. Every time we go back to visit as adults, we always play this song. Such a feel good make me smile song ❤
Oh this was huge in the UK the second time around! Didn't fare as well when it first came out mid 80s but re released in Spring 93 off the back of a car advert, getting to number one. Think someone might correct me but wasnt this written by Bananarama?
I remember listening to this on flight from the UK to Dubai when it was just a desert to visit my dad when I was a little kid, flying for the first time ion my own at 6 years old, joy, excitemen, trepidation, flying to the unknow, joyful. Always takes me back there
omg as soon as I saw the thumbnail I was transported back to my 15 yr old self, thank you for making me smile today, much love to you and yours from me and mine
This was actually a star filled video back in the day. The cafe owner is a well known actor. His wife was famous for an advert about Flash floor cleaner, and the daughter is Claire Grogan of the band Altered Images.
Molly Weir is playing the wife here - she was a famous Scots actress and comedienne. Her brother Tom made a lot of programmes on the Scottish countryside.
Jay and Amber, I'm glad you enjoyed this song. And while i didn't hate it, there are many other songs fom the 80s that i wish you would do. As someone already mentioned, the young waitress in this video is Claire Grogan and she has her own band Altered Images- Don't Talk to me About Love that you could do. Or another song previously mentioned by Aztec Camera-Oblivious. The name Bluebells reminded me of another 80s group, The Belle Stars- Sign of the Times, they're an all girl group. Other fun songs include Roman Holiday- Don't Try to Stop it or Stand By, The Reflex- Politics of Dancing, The Suburbs- Love is the Law, Q-Feel-Dancing in Heaven. So many more.
*tears* - this brings back memories of University in the mid/late 80's to me 🥰 It was ALWAYS playing in the Uni bars (and the Uni I went to). ♥ it! It's romantic too and love the violin (fiddle) riff. Such a happy and feel good song - makes you happy to be alive (as with your phrase Jay and Amber).
Lots of great bands coming from Scotland one of my favs is Fairground attraction one of my likes worth a listen to is find my love which has a latino flare to it . Their biggest hit was song called perfect , also a great song nice reaction to this one guys
Never heard this before but it's adorable...sweet and innocent like childhood should be. I'm 77 and my childhood is long gone but this perks me up again! Everyone needs these moments throughout like.
Another great choice! An interesting fact for you is the chef in the video is Stratford Johns, who played a 'hard as nails' detective Charlie Barlow in the 1960's cop show 'Z-Cars' and other subsequent cop shows built around his character.
The "rotund" man in the chef's outfit was a British actor called Stratford Johns . In the 60s and 70s he was hardly ever off our TV screens normally playing a hard bitten police officer or a heavy villain. His appearance in this video was the complete opposite to his usual onscreen persona.
Originally released in 1984 and it was released again 10 years later in 1994 and became a bigger hit here in UK reaching number one in the charts. It was used in a TV Ad so that's what helped it. It was co-written by Siobhan Fahey from Bananarama and they did a version on their debut album 'Deep Sea Skiving'.
I recognise the cafe owner don't kniw where from i assume he's Scottish.the old woman played a ghost witch in a kids show called renta ghost wheen i was young. The band made an appearance to perform this song in the last season of scot sitcom still game which is about a group of old people.
You are sp right!!! At 57 I still feel young at heart when I hear your reactions to music from my youth!! Like you said; I can feel the feelings of all my sences that I had when first hearing the tune your reacting to!! I guess that's why I'm hear this old reacting to your videos!! 😊❤
This song was originally recorded by Bananarama but just as an album track. It was co-written by Siobhan Fahey (Bananarama) & Bobby Beckingham (the violin player in the video here) while they were dating as a love song for their parents. ‘How come I love them now, how can I love them more?’
It was originally released in 1984 and got to number 8 in the charts. But we all remember it for the Volkswagen advert from the early 90s, 1993 I think it was when it got re-released and got to number 1 in the charts.
A very Scottish video featuring Stratford Johns as the cafe guy (an actor who usually played rough tough policemen), Claire Grogan as the young lady (singer for a band called Altered Images and was also in the comedy show Red Dwarf), and Molly Weir (the older lady, best known for the kids' show Rentaghost).
you two are the greatest!! 50S/60/70s 80s music knowledge! i'm learning somethings I didn't Know existed! Don't listen to any other Reactions this is the only one I follow!!!❤❤❤
The fat man serving in the cafe was a famous (serious) actor called Stratford Johns who'd been in the huge BBC police drama series "Softly Softly". Obviously did this for the laugh! The older lady is Mollie Weir, another Scots actor.
I've always believed that yes we have to grow up and yes we GET older but you absolutely must retain your inner child at all costs . Never lose it , now I don't consider 57 old but even so I still feel I'm in my twenties inside my head and don't ever want to lose that . Oh the memories of my late teens and early twenties this brought back were a joy thank you both I adore the wee trips down amnesia lane your videos provoke love to you both .
As others have mentioned, this came out twice in the UK - first time in the 80s, which was when I first heard and loved it, and associate it with that decade. Another great feelgood song that always takes me back, and with a thoughtful message!
Always reminds me of the beginning of the best years of my life, including meeting the people I now regard as my closest friends , and 1984 was also the first time I saw Billy Joel live.
What an amazing blast from the past. That song was played to death on the VW Adverts of the 90's and well loved too. Always loved it before that ad though too!
I loved your reaction to this song. Bizarrely, even though I was an avid new wave music buyer in the early 1980s, the first time I heard this song was on a 2 CD compilation called Once In A Life Time. The song takes me back to when I was in my twenties and lived as though tomorrow was yesterday's news. Thank you.
Amber knows canyons!!! In Eastern Ok, people don't climb hills but go down into the canyons where the canopy blocks the sun and wildlife blooms near the creeks! Great memories!
This was an unexpected pick. I knew some of the people from this scene back in the early 80s, and briefly worked for Aztec Camera, the band guitarist Craig Gannon was in before he joined The Bluebells.
I dunno HOW , I dunno WHY .. but I’ve followed from the early days and NEVER questioned why it was called ROB squad reactions 😅.. I just heard Jay say “ Robinson Family”… OMG I’m so dense … lol it all makes sense now 😳😳😳😳😆 👍🏴
Love this feel good song...age is just a number...I'll be 54 in October and my kids constantly tell me to act my age or my 19 yr old likes to say I'm just a 2yr old that can drive legally 😂😂😂
I LOVE this Scottish band !! Hometown heroes for sure and great live, just a shame they are no longer together ……❤️❤️❤️❤️🥃🥃🥃🥃🏴🏴🏴🏴
The older couple in the video are Molly Weir & Stratford Johns - both well-known UK actors in their day. Molly Weir starred in a TV series called Supergran and Stratford Johns was Chief Inspector Barlow in Z-Cars (which also starred Brian Blessed of Flash Gordon fame) and Softly Softly.
Ya know, a friend of mine, who is a professional musician, did a beautiful, slow, piano cover of this song. Very different from the original, but amazing. And may I say, I hope my aforementioned friend becomes famous enough for y'all to react to some of the music he has released someday. 😊
Another great song about reliving your youth that I think we’ll really resonate is: Dragon ‘Young Years’ Also some other fun girl power songs Tina Turner, Nutbush and Better be good to me (BUT you have to do the live version at Wembley 2000!!! This is a MUST! 🙏🏽) Mel and Kim, ‘Respectable’ Kylie Minogue ‘Step back in time’
Frank Sinatra recorded a song in the fifties called Young At Heart. Actually there was a musical in 1954 called Young At Heart starring Doris Day and Frank Sinatra which featured the song. You guys should check it out.
On an entirely different note (pun intended) a song of the same title was released in 1953 and sung by none other than Frank Sinatra (the first person to record the song). Completely different tone and timing, tempo and rhythm but, it is one of the great American Standards. The Sinatra version is one of the most beauriful songs he ever recorded. Startling differences that will capture your heart.... if you're Young At Heart
I'm so surprised y'all are covering this. It wasn't very well known in the US. I used to listen to their song "Cath" a lot in 1983. Y'all might also like Lloyd Cole and the Commotions.
This song takes me back to my teens for sure but there is someone in the video that takes even further back than my teens...the old lady doin the splits n shit was in a kids tv show called 'Supergran'.
You guys really need to view ren. New kid on the block from Wales. Super talented and going through so much health wise. I'm 67 and haven't heard the likes for years if ever
I’m kinda new here, so if you’ve done this one, forgive me. Amber you will love Chicago’s “Questions 67 & 68….lots of horns. Do you guys live in Cincy? I used to live in Fairfield, and my BIL went to UC. Thanks for your videos…you’re my new favorite channel!! Have a blessed week.
The stunning girl at the start is Clare Grogan. Clare was the singer for a band called Altered Images. They had a few hits back in the 80's. I may have had a crush on Clare, not sure, can't remember. 🤠
This was easily their most successful song, but their best were Cath and my favorite, Everybody's Somebody's Fool (there are several different versions of the latter song, but the best is clearly this one - ua-cam.com/video/q54qU4pj81o/v-deo.html)
Oh the summer of 1984! I was 11 years old in my backyard in Scotland pitching tents made from bedsheets and enjoying every song that came from the transistor radio next to me. This was one of the best songs of the year. Coincidentally I was thinking the other day that this song should be reviewed!

When someone asked my grandpa how it felt to be 85 years old; he said it felt like a sick 30. He was 30 inside, but some things didn't work so well.

Also as DI Charlie Barlow in Softly Softly.

yes! I was expecting to see a couple getting married outside a town hall in the video...must have been from the advert in 93.
Cath is a great song
Never heard this song until today, THANK YOU ❤ he made that violin sing❤
Omg. This was the 1st single I bought with my pocket money. Still have it 41years later ❤brought a smile to my face too watching you both enjoyed it 🎉

The guy in the chef hat in the cafe and the girl reading the newspaer are famous British actors ....... Stratford Johns and Clare Grogan
Bought this in 1984 aged 24 I’m now 63 years old and still have this single in my collection
Those are many of us that have gotten a little older that say we may be older but we refuse to grown up.

The Politics of Dancing! Haven't heard that one in ages!
It was Gary Kemp's feelings for Claire Grogan that brought about Spandau Ballet's "True".

This song is one of my mums funeral songs, wanted something uplifting and this was one of her favourites❤️

This was a massive and well loved hit in the UK... that’s what I like about this channel, they don’t just play songs that are well known in the US
This song takes me back to my teens for sure but there is someone in the video that takes even further back than my teens...the old lady doin the splits n shit was in a kids tv show called 'Supergran'.
Apart from the group themselves it features some very well known British TV Actors from the 60’s and 70’s.
The great Bobby Valentino on violin 👍👍
Quite a difference from the co-writer, Siobhan Fahey, who was the 'angel of death' in Shakespear's Sister's 'Stay' :)
This was a very underrated 80's hit as far as I'm concerned, everything about it was great
That took me back quite a few years.
The stunning girl at the start is Clare Grogan. Clare was the singer for a band called Altered Images. They had a few hits back in the 80's. I may have had a crush on Clare, not sure, can't remember. 🤠
I think we all did...
OMG, that's why she was so familiar 🥰
@@xyzdgthereal I think this video probably got her cast...or gave the idea for the show.
First!! Love you guys! Great content!
This was our holiday song in 1984 as our parents divorced the following year so was our last holiday together
This was easily their most successful song, but their best were Cath and my favorite, Everybody's Somebody's Fool (there are several different versions of the latter song, but the best is clearly this one - ua-cam.com/video/q54qU4pj81o/v-deo.html)
Amber and Jordan, you may like Alphaville,-(Forever Young) keep up with the good work 😎👍

And her stunt double? Or maybe she actually could do that and was showing off!
