Probably the great song ever written and a top hit from 1973 and most years since 2000
Coming from England. I've known this Christmas song since it was released. This song was/still is ABSOLUTELY one of the main Christmas songs that you listened to EVERY Christmas. A true English Christmas classic!
This song is played almost continuously in the UK during December and I still love it.

And not forgetting "Are You Ready to Rock".... a classic under-rated dance song (bagpipes & all..!)! 😁

If you grew up in the 70's over here, Wizzaed and Slade were the sound of Christmas. Roy wood is a great musician and singer with lots of great other songs and lots of music with other people and bands. Like Slade they were a proper bona fide rock band which can get missed due to both their massive Christmas hits. Nice reaction you folks. Incidentally, the quality doesn't bother me, in fact it adds to my memories.

Roy Wood Co founder of ELO...Chief member and songwriter with The Move and main man behind Wizzard. A great solo CV as well...sadly he wasn't promoted state side unlike his ex band mate Jeff Lynne....very underrated...a genius...
Another Roy Wood fun fact. Roy sang the very first song played on BBC Radio1 in 1967. Flowers in The Rain. 55 short years ago.
Roy sang the bridge on that number, but the main vocalist on it was the late Carl Wayne.

Roy Wood played at the wedding of a girl i used to work with, it was her claim to fame.

Roy Wood, the singer in Wizzard (Singer/Songwriter), was originally in the Move with Bev Bevan and Jeff Lynne and again later in ELO with Jeff Lynne.
Was Bev not also in ELO? Or was it not at the same time as Roy? I'm not up on my ELO history. I'm a Sabbath guy and know Bev from that.

Glam Rock was all about fun, music back then wasn't just all about the money so was more diverse and better than it is these days. Love you guys.
That was nice. Really nice. Do you know that Roy Wood (singer) was a co-founder of Electric Light Orchestra? He and Jeff Lynn were in a band called The Move prior to that.

Both this and Slade’s Merry Christmas Everybody were released in 1973. I agree with others and think that you will like Roy Woods work with The Move and also See My Baby Jive and Forever by Wizzard.

To answer your question. The young girl in the video wasn't related to Wood. She was part of the first year choir of Stockland Green Secondary School, Birmingham.
Roy Wood was the main creative force behind The Move, one of the most successful UK bands of the late 1960's, who never crossed over to America for some reason. Their hits included: Fire Brigade, Blackberry Way and Flowers in the Rain. Jeff Lynne joined the band and they went in a heavier psychedelic direction for a while, before they came up with the idea of ELO. For whatever reason, maybe Jeff liked strings and Roy wanted horns, or Jeff wanted to be the Beatles and Roy wanted to be Phil Spector, Roy left the band and pursued his own eccentric, if less lucrative course.
ELO's management decided Roy Wood could have a bigger career as a solo artist than with ELO (that also included former members of The Move). So he left and formed Wizard and ELO became Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan's band. No animosity break up, it was a purely executive decision. Take a look at the video for 10538 Overture. Roy on the cello and Jeff giving it plenty. Class.
@@timholder6825 I know that's the story they tell now, and Don Arden was not someone you would pick a fight with, but I'm not convinced. It sounds like the kind of thing your PR team comes up with when they want to gloss over past differences, as in the case of the induction of ELO into the RnR Hall of fame. There is nothing to say that there was ever any animosity between Jeff and Roy, they briefly worked together afterwards, but it's hard to have two leaders in a band.
@@delorangeade Roy wanted Jeff in the move for ages, but Jeff felt he should be loyal to the Idle Race, but joined the Move once the move was effectively down to a three piece , they were contracted to do one more album but the line up was basically the same as ELO ( without Richard Tandy I think). Although Roy had had the idea of ELO the split into Wizzard/Roy Wood/ Wizzo Band was never that clearly explained , I get the feeling Roy always didnt want to be a leader of a band (The Move was Ace's idea) yet wanted to be leader, if that makes sense.
The Move did go to the US, played a couple of gigs a Philimore then had a fight and somewhat broke up and cancelled the rest of their tour. Slade went to the USA in the 1970s, by the time they came back Glam had gone and Punk was in and Slade were totally bewildered.

If you guys haven't dove into the Move yet they ran from 1966-71 before morphing into ELO. "I Can Hear The Grass Grow",""Night Of Fear", and " Disturbance" are good early candidates. A later lineup in 69-70 would record SHAZAM!, containing the epic suite track "Cherry Blossom Clinic Revisited " a prog treatment of a shorter,earlier single of theirs. That would be a most adventurous entry point.

Roy Wood is obviously a big Phil Spector fan. And as others have pointed out, "See My Baby Jive" is a classic.
Wizzard are a great band and don't get much attention nowadays. Roy Wood is still very much on the music scene and like his former collaborator, Jeff Lynne, he can still produce the goods
Unfortunately Roy Wood cancelled his 2022 Winter Tour of the UK, I'm hoping that Woody and his "Rock & Roll Band" will be touring the UK again in the Winter of 2023.

Oldies are the best. Just remembered another Christmas song "Lonely This Christmas" by the band Mud ua-cam.com/video/NJ6kJ7GWtv0/v-deo.html . They gave the appearance of being a bit of a joke band but they were a blast live, I saw them when they supported Leo Sayer around 74/75
Well they no more gave the impression of being a joke band than any other act involved in Glam Rock. Tiger Feet was probably the biggest song of 1973 in the UK, and Dynamite might have been the best.

Saw Mud live twice in mid 70's, they were great fun, good songs and just having a blast

1. My standard comment - what makes this song great is that it succeeds where the Beach Boys failed. Compare their Little Saint Nick - it was an obvious rewrite of an earlier hit, and it ruined it, by messing up the very feature that had made the preceding song so unique [the V/minor-II chord progression]. THIS song on the other hand is also an obvious rewrite of an earlier hit, namely See My Baby Jive, but it retains that song's harmonic and instrumental idiosyncracies whilst including a simpler and more memorable melody. And it has a riff borrowed from Duke Ellington, for good measure.

'Serious' bands around this time used to hate the fact that they had to mime rather than play live , particularly on Top Of The Pops, so they would deliberately do it badly, The Faces were particularly good at being bad.
