Dad sacrifices himself so that the water doesn't have enclave labels on it. Also why does both the Enclave bunker and the mobile base blow up, even if you choose to side with the presodent and target the citadel?
There's evidence that the large amount of empty space in the Wasteland is an intentional design choice because a leaked map of an earlier version of the game shows that at one point it was much smaller and much less space between locations, but at some point they decided to spread things out and thus create more empty space... which might be a good thing because it adds an important feeling of loneliness and desolation, and also realism. The added random encounters and enemies/animals/NPCs that would roam these new spaces also adds unpredictability. This is according to MATN's Fallout 3 video essay btw
I think what was annoying about the original ending what the absolute lack of sense it made. You briefly mention that the game ends after the water is purified but don't mention that for some reason, it's because Bethesda forces YOU to go into the room and sacrifice yourself for the good of the wasteland. And while it's quite interesting that they wanted to create a story that actually ENDS rather than infinitely plays on (which they've kept ever since) it was extremely pissy for them to do it like this. Why would you have to go in when there's multiple people yoi could have with you (and more then likely would) who are immune to radiation? You had charon, and many people had Fawkes. Even Lyons has a suit of power armour which would help a lot (if she'd just put her damn helmet on). But Bethesda wrote in some bullshit claims, Fawkes would refuse saying it is your destiny or some shit. Which is even more infuriating then if Bethesda just "didn't think about the logic" because why would any characters in any story or real life forego a completely safe option just to force someone to sacrifice themselves, for no benefit?
I always found it really dumb the reason for Autumn Surviving your father´s sacrifice is he apparently injects himself an "unknown substance" which is not clear at all from your viewpoint during the cutscene. It would have been better if he was actually a couple of clones or President Eden was cloning his subordinates in secret. Very poor execution for what the wiki calls the "main antagonist" of Fallout 3
Fallout 3 has great story and side stories, great atmosphere and great map, yes i said it, it doesn't mean it doesn't have it's problems and many things Fallout New Vegas did better especially adding aim sights, more weapons and great worldbuilding but still fallout 3 was a great Fallout game and still is, the story of the lone wanderer, the atmosphere of the destroyed capital of the USA and the map of Washington DC are it's best assets and i never get bored of it.

I got a pretty good chuckle when you massacred Paradise Falls and Charon shot the last guy and without missing a beat just "That takes care of that!"
just watching you play through the beginning of this game reminded me so much of my own playthrough that i have yet to complete. we both had the same reaction to the super mutants at 12:22 and hid in the pulowski chamber lol
It's good to know I wasn't the only one who hid in the survival shelter when coming across my first super mutants

Honestly Bethesdas empty nothing is what makes fallout 3 better than the rest of the 3d fallouts. There is just nothing left.
Excellent. Come on algorithm, give this channel a chance.
When I first started watching I suspected you had atleast 50,000 subs!. You have such amazing content and I cant wait to watch more vids and watch your channel grow
Literally been searching for a video like this lately. Replaying Fallout 3 right now while I listen to your video. Liked and Subbed!
This was generally a good dive. Most channels either ride Bethesda until its meat falls off or bashes the dead horse of the failures for 6 hours.
I'm still playing through Fallout 3. I started in 2014, and I probably have 1000 hours or so in it. Of course, I set it aside for years at a time. At the moment I have one DLC left and then the end of the main quest. So I am not watching all the video, just the beginning. Excellent insight.
Your graphics are much better than mine, and mine are not bad. Mostly the NPCs are better. I expect it is because my install is from 2014 and I do not want to change the mods.
I love this game too

Just finished your oblivion series, it's great to see you covering other Bethesda games.
Fallout is one of my favorite universes. And you Sir, do this franchise justice with your unique story telling and production. (I also like your Skyrim retrospect as well.) I like long analysis videos, for many different reasons. You have a very special take, unlike any others I have seen. It's your own. And it's good. In fact, it's excellent. Thank you for taking the time to share this with us. o7
I wonder if one of the points of divergence between reality and Fallout was that Lincoln was actually the good man that history teachers want to portray, and not the authoritarian dictator who was more than happy to allow the southern states to keep their property just to get more tariff money out of them.
ambient tracks in FO3 is amazing and haunting, unparalleled really. I think although NV is a better RPG, FO3 is the best effort to date by Bethesda
If we could have the gunplay/customization of fallout 4 and the atmosphere/not shit quests from fallout 3 if would be a great game
@@jeremyscungio16 the inner city isnt even cool and dangerous like it should be. very few locations are difficult to complete, and it just breaks your game bc bethesda doesn't understand the limits of his engine.
I would say morrowind or daggerfall but yeah fo3 is kinda cool
Be careful there chief. This is the internet, under no circumstances are you EVER allowed to say ANYTHING positive about Fallout 3 and especially not about Bethesda! Lol.
@@khrashingphantom9632 brace yourself, the new vegas fanboys are coming
Fallout 3 was the first Fallout game I played and one of the first open world games that weren't GTA. So it'll always hold a nostalgic and special place in my heart to me. To me the capital Wasteland and surrounding areas rely on hunting, gathering, scavenging and bartering or raiding for survival, i like it.
Very different feel and vibe to fallout 3 when compared to new Vegas. I enjoy both, got more hours in Vegas but I remember much more about 3.
Any interest in playing fallout 1 or 2?
My god, thank you for not being a fanboy, you not only praised the game, and explained why people would love it, and critiqued it as well. I wish the fanbase had less Bethesda and Obsidian simps, and more people like you.
I love the stellaris music in the background, I instantly recognized it, Damn I love that game so much tbh but great video on fallout 3 though
Great video. I appreciate some more positive persoectives on the game that introduced me to Fallout
The use of Rimworld's soundtrack was in some ways the perfect choice for this video, great job on the retrospective

a lot of people are just followers, if hating on f3 makes them feel better about themselves they're free to do it
This is still my favorite fallout game
It really doesn't get as much credit as it should.
Likewise, it's biggest flaw is that it's older therefore it is "inferior" in every possible way. Lol. Seriously this game IS great. It was great when it came out, and it's STILL great today. I hate the discourse around it these days.
@@khrashingphantom9632 honestly i dont get how it being inferior makes it a worse product
@@LucyWest370 That's why I put "inferior" in quotes. I don't follow that line of logic at all. This game is great in spite of it's age, but a common school of thought is if something is older and not "pre approved" by "major" channels it not only is inferior, but it also has no value. Lol. This game is STILL fantastic and it's just hard for me to see the HATRED it get now.
@@khrashingphantom9632 I can honestly understand how you could say its inferior, its like saying Avengers Infinity War is Inferior to Avengers Endgame. This is a true statement but that doesnt mean Infinity war is bad. People overhate 3, just let people like the game jeez.

I want the world of Bethesda and the mechanics of obsidian. A perfect game in my opinion
Yes and a mix of the writing and it would be perfect
Yeah ive always said theres not enough pre war lore in the classic and obsidian titles and not enough actually good main quest in the bethesda titles, so just put them together!
I mean all obsidian did was add useless iron sights, add weapon extensions which were glorified stat boosts (except for scopes), half-baked faction system (3 really wouldn't benefit from it regardless), and... made Charisma useless with number-based speech checks instead of percentage-based?
@@Jeyeyeyey useless iron sights? Dude in fallout 3 bullet spread was shooting a raider six inches in front of you and hitting a mole rat seven yards away by accident. The faction system is way less half baked then bethesda and while yes charisma is useless thats hardly a reason to hate new vegas.

Dad sacrifices himself so that the water doesn't have enclave labels on it.
Also why does both the Enclave bunker and the mobile base blow up, even if you choose to side with the presodent and target the citadel?
Skipping gnr and going straight to the rivet city science lab kinda breaks the game
Just found your channel, loving it so far 😍
There's evidence that the large amount of empty space in the Wasteland is an intentional design choice because a leaked map of an earlier version of the game shows that at one point it was much smaller and much less space between locations, but at some point they decided to spread things out and thus create more empty space... which might be a good thing because it adds an important feeling of loneliness and desolation, and also realism. The added random encounters and enemies/animals/NPCs that would roam these new spaces also adds unpredictability.
This is according to MATN's Fallout 3 video essay btw
What the fuck is MATN?

Very poor execution for what the wiki calls the "main antagonist" of Fallout 3
you can literally see him inject himself with something. It isn't a cutscene either you can move around and see him do it right through the glass
I really, really like the use of Rimworld music in this video. It fits quite well.
Very nice, needs more eyes on this. Regarding Colonel Autumn. If you look closely when the purifier is destroyed you can see him inject his arm.
The brotherhood blowing up their own water caravan was hilarious and feels like it could be the epitome of Bethesda jank.

Fallout 3 is perfect except for the fact that it takes place 200 years after the war.
