      What really cracks me up is in the Shadow Broker DLC for ME2, you can see her on a camera feed trying to interview a Krogan, and the Krogan keeps getting pissed about her camera being right in his face, so he just straight decks the reporter in the face. And given that he's, well, a KROGAN, the punch literally lifts the reporter off her feet and sends her flying through the air lmao.
      Even though I'm mostly Paragon, I always deck that reporter

      Biggest RPG design flaw in the series: Not letting you take any option at any time (that isn't continuity dependent on previous decisions) and just _track_ your paragon and renegade scores. I ended up playing ME 1 twice purely to have a new game plus file where I had max in both so I could _actually do what I felt fit_ throughout. By far, the most fun I had playing ME 1. To the point I played ME 2 only after getting a cheat to max out both from the start of the game. (Absolutely recommend it, vastly more fun RP experience.)

      @@Sorain1 agreed, when legendary came out i decided to do this and it was the best, I can't imagine playing this game any other way. Apparently I'm in the minority that prefers renegade shepard but some of the options are just plain psychotic and I couldn't stand choosing them with the notion "well, I need the points".
      I used to love the system but after my playthrough with max renegade/paragon idk. Maybe it just needs better balancing? It's really hard for me to say. I'm normally really opinionated lol but how do you change something that's so integrated into the game design?

    • @Sorain1
      @Sorain1 2 роки тому +2

      @@DarkWraithKevin Well for a re-release the fix is easy. Make a toggle so the game ignores the renegade/paragon requirements for choices and interrupts.
      For a new game? Instead of limiting what player's can do, use the system to TRACK player behavior. Then bend reactions to fit the style the player has displayed. Hell, if it was me designing ME 1, I would have tied some of the key story decisions to your score. If you were mostly Paragon? Council is saved. If you were mostly Renegade? Council dies. The game would need to be up front about this, but it could be easily applied in a logical manner to most things. Whichever team mate you cared about (brought with you, talked with) is the one saved on Virmire. In edge cases where the score isn't clearly one way or the other? Then the player is prompted to choose, because it's a reasonable question of what way their Shepard would decide.

    I think my biggest criticism of 1’s writing is solely Shep’s dialogue being rough. Paragon comes off as submissive rather than diplomatic, and Renegade comes off as needlessly hostile rather than unscrupulous. Hits its stride in 2, where Paragon Shep isn’t above getting his hands dirty and will make it known, and Renegade Shep is ruthless to get things done rather than because he just wants to get into needless fights.

    • @rogerlynch5279

      That was a struggle from DAY 1 for the developers vs. BIOWARE. The team wanted the options as a means of uathority but BIOWARE wanted it in the way the dialogues were handled in KotOR - So out came a hybride of both standpoints.
      Also BIOWARE had wanted from the beginning on a SHOOTER with RPG elements like in BROTHERS IN ARMS for example not a full fledged well done RPG.

    1:26:30 Oh thank god someone said it. I generally don't do romance in Mass Effect because it's extremely inappropriate. Which means Bioware games aren't for me because they are full of that kind of stuff.

    • @PrivateSessions
      @PrivateSessions  3 роки тому +14

      It seems like a weird addition to the game, but it's actually extremely appropriate for the genre of space opera. There's always romance in those things because genre tropes I guess. If there's one thing I'll give ME credit for, they really did nail the space opera genre in a way I've not seen a game before or since hit.
      Still, aside for the meme factor, I never actually cared about romancing in these games. This run especially: pure meme each time Shepard gets his groove on.

      Yeah, the series definitely went bitch as it went on. Cerberus went from being presented in a neutral light to being Saturday morning baad guys. The first game was the only one that allowed a human first mentality. All the others went full Star Trek

    • @eltarn5375
      @eltarn5375 8 місяців тому +1

      @@MALICEM12 And that would be fun? There are plenty of movies/series/games about "humanity first", which have the same depth that renegade shep had in first ME - they are mostly boring and those that aren't are that way because of the cheese factor.
      And about "bitch" Star Trek - ever watched DS9?
      They went the right way with ME2, IMO, removing cringy racist Shepard roleplaying and embracing brutal aspects of renegade from ME1.

    • @MALICEM12
      @MALICEM12 8 місяців тому +4

      @@eltarn5375 my comment was mostly about Cerberus having depth and not just being cartoon villains. And by star trek I mean the series in general. It's always been pretty utopian DS9 is the exception mean to critique that view not the norm.
      And the "humanity first is boring" is subjective. Most people think Halo was awesome and it was humanity first. But again, I was criticizing most how they did Cerberus more so than Shepard

    • @eltarn5375
      @eltarn5375 8 місяців тому

      @@MALICEM12 Well, fair enough about DS9 being different from the rest of the Star Trek - but that's not what I was trying to say, it was more that DS9, while not being afraid about tackling political/moral/philosophical questions without going full cheese mode - still trying to operate within universe rules, but approaching it from a more realistic, rugged perspective.
      Some parts of Halo were awesome. Some were not.
      So it's not about a theme/idea, it's more about an execution - and, IMO, execution of that idea in ME1 was pretty weak. Even when not playing "by-the-book' puppy loving Shepard, but a more ruthless one, I still picked a fair share paragon dialogue options, because a lot of the renegade ones, although some were quite awesome, were really rough - made the character look like a really unlikable asshole, contrasting to how they tweaked it into sequels.
      Cerberus was given a proper look only in ME2 - in ME1 they weren't developed yet. Yes, the were mentioned in quite a lot of questlines, but with no clear motivations, ideas, philosophy or anything. And ME3 dumbed a lot of things down, not just Cerberus.
      So it's pretty weird to me that all other games except ME1 went full Star Trek. Andromeda - yeah, sure, I agree. ME3 - in some ways, but in some ways they did allow quite interesting choices and experiences, like Salarian Deal, choosing Geth only and stuff like that, it wasn't all Star Trek. And ME2 was, in my opinion, more personal, serious and down to earth of all ME games. It's ME1 that, of the original trilogy, that was the most "Star Trek" to my eyes - understandable, it being a first game of the series - but contrasting with how you feel.

Its like the other games forget that Shepard can act with almost total impunity. He killed 300,000 Batarians, based off of what many considered to insane ramblings, and his punishment was house arrest. He wasn't even arrested by the Council, the human government arrested him. Which being a Spectre, the Alliance didn't have authority to arrest him, so he was under voluntary house arrest. The council on the other hand, didn't care in the slightest. My first playthrough, going in as blind as possible, but i knew there was a notorious crew choice in the game. BUT I didn't even realize Virmire WAS the suicide mission. I had sent Ashley with the Salarians, Kaiden had bomb duty, it felt like it suited their roles. When the first decision happens when Ashley calls, i remember distinctly thinking "yeah, Ashley can handle herself, and right now the bomb going off is priority. Sure kaiden said the bomb was secure but like it might be possible they can hack it and shut it down."
    So i saved him instead, realizing that it was the suicide mission. Another funny note, i was playing mostly nice dude, and was trying to just be nice with Ashley but then it starts turning romantic and i didn't want that, and I had little experience with bioware games so i wasn't sure how to say no without renegade, not realizing it wouldn't be renegade.
    So now the whole Vimire mission seemed like i let Ashley die in order to escape an awkward relationship, so that was fuckin hilarious.

      Also to add another argument on why going protect the bomb is so important even though Kaiden already armed it and it's supposed to be unstoppable, we just learned that Sovereign is not just a ship it's a very ancient and powerful sentient machine from a race that built the relays and citadel and eradicated the protheans, and Sovereign is just around the corner. It's pretty safe to say it can probably defuse the bomb very easily.

    Tbh I like Ashley and no, she is not racist, she is humanity first, especially because of how she preceives humanity to be treated by the superior alien races, but she will always be opposed to Terra Firma if you will notice because she does not want that kind of humanity first behavior, she isnt lookin for a fight and she isnt looking down on anyone, she lacks understanding of aliens (as does majority of the other cast at this point) and wants better treatment of humanity, she explains herself quite clearly and her points about working with other species on board of Normandy are valid from a military standpoint. This is just bias.
    Maybe im dumb but why is the line about aliens resembling animals supposed to be racist? Some of them absolutely do, hell Shepard calls a hanar big stupid jellyfish, is that supposed to be racist? Its stupid to slap such a simple qualifier on this.
    As far as the companion interactions and romances go, yea its rushed, sadly, Me 1 was first in the franchise, its easily the shortest and they didnt have as much resources etc., but there is supposed to be time passing in the backround, obviously what we see isnt everything that is happening, much like what we see isnt everything there is, its an illusion, there is plenty of setup behind the scenes, personally I never found anything that happens to be suspension breaking.
    Not even sure what to think about the predatory bit, wtf man, its clearly coming from both ways, hell Liara even flirts first and is certainly not intended to be underaged or anything, it is not coming from the wrong place, you are certainly in the wrong headspace tho.
    That being said, ME1 is my favorite I agree with you on most points and this is a great analysis, much like all of your other work, thanks for your hard work :)

    The praise you give ME1 is entirely warranted. I haven't finished the video yet, but I wonder if you were/are as affected as I was by Ilos. Every time I play, I keep the screen for the planet description up for a very long time before initiating the mission. Ilos haunts me, and when I walk around that obviously post-apocalyptic utterly ruined landscape, I'm frightened. It's like disturbing an enormous tomb, and no one should be there. I cry every time I talk to Vigil; the imagery he dredges up of the last scientists dying horribly on the Citadel (and in the stasis pods), it's nightmare stuff. And yet...despite the tragedy at every turn on Ilos, I leave feeling hopeful. Even the sight of exactly what the Reapers will do to the galaxy, Shepard doesn't give up or run away. It's bravery that I wish I could have; just a wonderful story. I'm looking forward to finishing the video :)

      They did. The Mass Disruptor torpedo is equipped with an eezo warhead and is designed in such a way that it can pass right through shields, it's dark energy explosion warping armour and destroying shield emmitters. The only problem with this weapon was that it was too slow. Ships in mass effect use an automated laser point defense system that renders missile based weapons useless. That's where fighters came in. Capable saturating point defense systems with too many torpedos at near point-blank range, fighters became pretty lethal in combat. A common tactic was that fighters would tear down the shields of Capital Ships allowing them to be swarmed by smaller ships.
      Later a ship mounted variant of the Mass Disruptor torpedo would be designed called the Javelin Disruptor torpedo. These were faster and were typically fired on converging trajectories to amplify their detonations. However, they were still quite susceptible to point defensive and were typically a secondary weapon on Frigates and were used by larger ships as an extra layer of point defence.
      By the time of ME1 only the Mass Disruptor torpedo was in use as the Javelin was still in its experimental phase. Both torpedos proved to be quite effective against reaper shields, however reapers also used laser based point defenses and they were much more precise than those of other ships. Their secondary weapons were also turreted and capable of slicing Cruiser in half. Like I said the torpedos have to be fired at close range. Against a reaper that was a death sentence

      The only other weapon that can ignore Kinetic-barriers is a directed energy weapon like a laser. The problem with that is not only are lasers prone to overheating and burning out, but the typical battle usually occurs across thousands or even tens of thousands of kilometers. Far out of the range of laser fire. Even if a battle were to occur at ranges where lasers would be effective, the ablative armour used by mass effect ships is designed to spread heat across a large area, rendering heat based weapons useless.
      This only leaves kinetics as a viable offensive armament against reapers, but the Sovereign-class reaper shields have been known to shrug off the weapons fire of entire fleets or upto 4 Battleships simultaneously
      (note that as of ME3, the human navy only had 8 fleets and 9 battleships. Sovereign-class Reapers number in the 10s of thousands)

Those aliens actually look humanoid and wear armor/elaborate clothing/weapons. Hanar are literally just floating jelly fish, if I saw one the first time standing beside an Asari I probably also would not assume that this jellyfish belongs to a space-faring species.

    Being a full Renegade in these games sucks, particularly because it's so counter-productive in the following episodes. If you kill everything and cut all ties to potential allies stuff just goes so badly in the next games. Plus, so much extra content is lost.
    I'm also a bit disappointed you failed to explore what happens when you get Liara before Noveria, because it gives an extra layer to the story if she tags along on your way to kill her mother. Story-wise, it's a better option if she's there with you, since you have no real reason to recruit her if you kill her mother first. It's a fact she is the one to identify Ilos from the vision, but you don't know she would be the one to do it, especially after you speak to the Asari on Feros. And it also fits Liara's character growth much better for the rest of the story if she is involved in the process of eliminating Benezia.
    Oh well, this is, after all, a game about choices.
    Edit - Concerning the rachni Queen, you later find the rachni wars were fought by indoctrinated rachni, and that they never really wanted to enter a war with anything, it was all the work of the Reapers. So killing her is a really fucked up thing to do, besides the fact that you're essentially re-killing a species... Yeah, not okay.
    This is where the sci-fi part comes in in Mass Effect: what does technology, the advancement of a species and its encounter with other species do to its basic sense of ethics? Would you kill an entire people or ethnicity because some of them in the past fought in a terrible war? How do you justify that, morally?
    Edit 2 - You said you didn't recall the Kaidan romance, and you didn't know if it came off as predatory, and in fact in the conversations with his character their professional rank is mentioned quite a bit, as well as regulations and problems related to fraternization. I read somewhere that there were individual writers for individual characters, and between Ash and Kaidan I think she got the short end of the stick because someone along the line must have edited her dialogue to some degree, as there are inconsistencies all over the writing and the character's reactions and responses. Maybe exactly because there was so much of it they cut it and its incredibly messy.
    As for the Liara romance, it's interesting how her trauma compounded with a rushed relationship and then Shepard's death might have helped turn her into what she became later. But definitely, the male romances are kind of problematic because the potential partners are all so much younger and innocent - or dealing with self-esteem issues, as is the case with Miranda. There is very little maturity in all of them up until ME3.

    Feel like the whole art style of the ME universe doesn't usually get as much love and respect as it should. I mean yeah the amazing characters and TOP TIER lore, and i mean top tier compared to all of fiction, not just video games, Does a ton of the heavy lifting of making the ME universe one of the very best. But without the absolutely iconic style this universe would not have drawn in so many as it did.
    I mean in just the first game alone bioware created a universe every bit as iconic as STAR WARS 🤯 and of course i mean og "good starwars lol" because im a cool dude 🤓
    The Normandy can stand proudly right next to the falcon, the citadel with the deathstar, Reapers with imperial star destroyers, and the Mass Effect relays! Omg so awesome, and i mean awesome in the literal sense . 😰 And....um.... well this is just MY OPINION, so plz dont kill me 😨🙏

Beyond what's obviously presented in dialogue and gameplay, I've spent HOURS reading through codex entries. Learning the politics and the culture of each race bioware created for this series. The version of the Milky Way that they created is so believable because the people who created it knew everything about it. I'm sure they thought of things we didn't. Weird tangent - my favorite question to ask sci-fi and fantasy writers is "where does the poop go?". Is it jettisoned into space? Kept in tanks that have to eventually be taken to colonized worlds for disposal? Used for fertilizer? You never have to explain how it works to the audience, but to create a believable world, you should know the answer yourself. I firmly believe the creators of ME know where the poop goes. There's so many details it'd be hard to believe that they don't know nearly everything about the galaxy they built.

    I may be responding to your criticism of Tali's character arch in the first game with the benefit of hindsight of the later two games, but my feelings are that Tali is portrayed to be in her mid to late adolescent stage of life, with that being said, her shallowness in character makes total sense considering that her races is focused around the survival and maintenance of the migrant fleet and lack the luxury of mingling with the other races at their convenience. All interactions with the known races are done out of necessity, and it's stated that the Quarians aren't held in high regard due to their involvement with the Geth making galactic socialization all the more difficult for the Quarians. I haven't dug to far into her personal lore to be 100% sure of how long she had been on her pilgrimage but I feel it's safe to assume by how naive she is in this game that she hasn't been gone for very long. My opinion is that her over all lack of character suits her due to her being so young and the little glimpses of her personality during dialogue while she is on the he squad is the writers way of fulfilling a character development of a young sheltered individual that is learning who they are while confronting an imminent galactic apocalypse.

      I had a similar idea, but I still think she could have used at least one little personal story like how Wrex, Garrus, and Ashley, and Kaiden get. Watching her grow from a timid fish-out-of-water to being a respected pillar of her people (or an exile) is a really satisfying thing to witness. I'm writing this after watching and replaying the game for the first time in a decade via the legendary edition. Not really a coherent response, more just a stream on how i feel on various parts of hte game. ME1 is really memorable inspite of really bland gameplay. But mostly in making an interesting setting and conflict, with a surprise scifi cosmic horror twist. But I think the actual talky gameplay is pretty on par with the shooty gameplay. There's rarely any actual interesting conversations, and they're all just Talk > pump NPC for information > progress conversation > repeat until over. Getting past someone in a conversation relies either on stuff done before hand (like getting wrex's armor) or just having a high enough charm/intimidate level to get the special option. And outside of that, you don't really use them for anything. AFAIK you never get any kind of varying dialogue or conversations because of your paragon/renegade status, its just an option in conversation, and there's no real cost to using one over the other besides not maximizing one of your scores. Which is kind of weak, because most decisions can be rationalized either way. Shepard wanting his own personal army of rachni to fight the reapers is a very ruthless, end justify means renegade thing, but you could also want to finish off the rachni as a heroic paragon thing because uh they killed a couple hundred million people.
    Combat is mediocre, but some of the guns are fairly satisfying. Shields not being insufferable protections against powers is nice, and the number and variety of powers with different cool downs is much better than the streamlined system we got later. Being able to throw your powers out like free candy is great. The leveling is kind of garbage between the number of upgrades vs tangible benefits, but I like the variety a lot more. The Mako on random planets could be fine or total garbage, but that's more the fault of the planets. I like the mako overall, it feels very powerful in the story missions where you get to mow down a bunch of guys. Gun and armor variety was nice, as was the various upgrades and stuff available to you.
    The party is the best part of the game, and it's biggest failing is you only ever get two bros to hangout with you. I doubt they could've let you bring everyone around all the time, but it would've been nice if the different members at least, like, talked on the radio sometimes. Or took part in the mission, but off screen. So we aren't sending three guys to solve every problem the galaxy faces every single time. Because i'm bringing wrex and garrus with me everywhere because they are my friends.
    It's really a shame they didn't have a clue what to do with the following games, because none of them really pick up where ME1 left off. Threads, sure. ME2 mostly picks up ME1 threads to prepare them for solving in ME3 (rannoch, genophage), but they don't really involve the council or the consequences of choices in ME2, aside from the odd cameo or reference. Which is rather disappointing, but the failure to really deliver on those meaningful choices between games is sort of the trademark of the series.

    Fantastic video, glad I found it and your channel. This was a perfect way to do a sort of commentary-esque recap/in-depth review analysis of the game. This is what I expected from Salt Factory's review of Mass Effect but was sorely disappointed. There are really one like a couple of videos like this, and honestly, I'm really glad I found another one that isn't apologetic towards ME2, and can really appreciate ME1- the game that started off the franchise in the first place- for all of its strength in world building, lore etc., instead of fawning over its (mostly) irrelevant sequel. On to your ME2 video now lol.

    I really do love the Mass Effect series so much. I just feel like their is no other game like this that has been made since that wasn't just another Bioware game. Spiders Studio comes close but it does not hit it in the same way. There is, so, much that I love about the Mass Effect games that you talked about it. And even though it is sad that you won't talk about the Andromeda, as I controversially like it, it will be great to see the other games being reviewed.

    I remember playing Mass Effect 1 after first fully completing Mass Effect 2 to 100% numerous times. Suffice to say the gunplay was my least favorite part, and having to get a certain number of kills with each weapon as an Infiltrator is a pain I still remember to this day. I completed that journey again on the Legendary edition and it is still a great series. I look forward to watching this (and hopefully) your analysis on Mass Effect 3.

    Ugh😒 I'd nearly forgotten just how lame your ending choices in ME 1 are😐 In this game there fantastic. You can completely remake the balance of political power in the whole galaxy 🤯 its incredible!! Until you get to game 2 and realize your decision had almost no impact!! You let the rulers of the galaxy die so humanity can slide in and take their place? Nah!!! Why would you expect that to have a massive impact on the galaxy?? Sillybilly
    Basically the same thing happens with the ending of me2. Doesn't matter what you do with the human baby reaper
    It made for a devastatingly disappointing start to ME2. Was so hype as i made my way to the citadel to meet the council 😔 That horrible revelation completely killed the enthusiasm the game had built up to that point

    • @JezaGaia
      @JezaGaia 13 днів тому +1

      Honestly to me ME2 in it's entirety was pointless. It's only purpose was to allow TIM to get his hands on as much reaper tech as he could to create the monsters he used as soldiers in ME3, and that's even with you refusing to hand him the collector's base.
      Let's say that Shep had never died and spent the whole 3 years trying to find a weapon against the reapers, what would have happened with the collectors and the baby reaper ?
      Well in ME3 instead of having "only" an army of husks, cannibals, brutes and marauders, they would also have had what a hundred, two hundred collectors ... big deal when you're fighting in dozens of planets at the same time.
      The collector's strength, like the reaper's when you think about it was all about secrecy. That's why they only attack very small colonies, that's why they used the Vorcha in Omega. The chances of them finishing the human reaper before the invasion were very very slim but even if they did so what ? Hundreds of reapers invaded the galaxy what would one have changed ? Heck one reaper we know we can deal with, we destroyed Sovereign after all so even had they finished it before the final invasion it probably would have stayed beyond the omega relay waiting for the others.
      The only positive that came for the events of ME2 was the great team we put together, there could have been reason to recruit most if not all of them in the pursuit of a weapon against the reapers, not a hard story to write.
      If the story didn't puck up 2 years later but just a couple of months the events of ME1, in particular the consequences of our choice regarding the council and the human councilor, could have been much more impactful too if just because fresh after it happened and not much later when the dust has already settled.

      @JezaGaia I couldn't agree more! I made a similar comment on the me2 video lol. By far my least favorite of the trilogy. It's the first game I can remember that felt like pointless anime filler episodes.
      Other than the characters, removing me2 from the trilogy would have very little impact. Main thing the game offers imo is laying a decent foundation for the combat system that 3 would build on and make exceptional

    Excellent Review. I was 36 when ME1 came out & an avid fan of Sci-Fi since Star Wars in 1977. I'd also been a PnP Roleplayer since 1982. Everything Mass Effect was about, I was already a hardened, Jaded Fan of. Yet the game STILL managed to impress me. ME1 is the High Point of Bioware. When their Team was at the top of their game & had the resources to fulfill their Vision.
    Sadly, I cannot appreciate things like Sovereign's Speech the same way you can. The Subsequent Games (Especially ME3, of course) make his Rantings a hollow, meaningless joke. Perhaps if they had kept the Dark Energy plotline, it would have still kept that resonance, but tragically, we got what we got.
    Incidentally, THAT story was inspired by the 1986 Masterpiece, 'Starflight', which also influenced later Great Works like the Brilliant 'Star Control' (SC1 & the Ur-Quan Masters) games.

    Enjoying the vid, never was a big fan of the first ME game, always felt like the lacklustre gameplay dragged it down more than the story could pull it up; you've somewhat changed my perspective on it though, Bioware really did a great job at setting the stage and building a fascinating world there. Might need to replay it at some point...

      Honestly the legendary edition made a lot of neat little improvements to the gameplay of ME1 that I feel makes it actually fun. Still not as good as 2 and 3 in terms of gameplay, but it's definitely playable by modern standards. If you got the ability to, I'd highly recommend the legendary edition. The main story of the first game is really something unique, I've yet to play anything else like it, and what I covered in this video is like 15% of what's there to be explored. It's got so much depth few games can match even now.

      @@PrivateSessions My worry with remakes is the possibility of cut content, and alterations to suit modern sensibilities. Though it certainly does look better gameplay-wise. @@xXvironXx I've got an unhealthy knowledge of what is in Mass Effect 1, and I didn't notice anything cut, but there's definitely something to be said about alterations diluting the purity of the original, and they did alter more than they said in any promo material. In my opinion it was all done tastefully and true to the original, but others might disagree. I know I had to switch back to the old Mako control scheme because the new one just didn't feel right, fortunately they had that option in the game settings.
      Also the new photo mode was a brilliant addition that made making this video easier.

    I do love Mass Effect 1 but I do not like Liara. She is always pushed onto Shepard and it drives me crazy. I always romance Kaidan but I romance him with male Shepard. In ME1 it is friendship between him and John, getting to know about his past, the abuse he suffered while in BAAT etc....2 is a whole different story and ME3 is two very tired soldiers who have nothing left to lose deciding to have a grown up conversation about being together. I like how his romance is handled with John as it differs a little from femsheps (which I have never done, only watched). The ME series is one of my favourite game series despite all the clunk and jank in the first game. Mass Effect 2 cleans up combat and skills but some squad conversations really suffer. And the romances are not good personally. I did do a romance run with Garrus in ME2 and it was so cringeworthy, I got second hand embarrassment. Jacks however, I really quite liked....sadly it falls by the wayside in ME3. I also do like how the situation on Noveria can be settled in many different ways, the one you showed, I have never seen before. I do like how some of the side quest results can have ramifications of small side events in ME2. Mhy first ever runs, I played John by the book paragon, then I did an off the wall renegade and in ME1, it was so funny, 2 and 3 he almost became psychotic. Now, I like to play about with dialogue to really expand who my Shepard is as a person morally and ethically etc

    The worst thing for me with Ashley is her rank position to Shep. She's a SNCO... but she's just a SNCO. From a military family at that, where the duties of rank and military hierarchy are generally baked in from literal birth. No Marine worth his or her salt would talk to the Skipper the way Ashley talks to Shep. Like, Shep can bro it up with Kaiden, Kaiden is A. a fellow officer, B. More importantly a fellow field grade officer and C. Shep's XO, so he's literally one of the only people Shep *should* be socializing with. Ward room privilege and all that shit. The aliens are outside of the chain of command and are free to socialize with normally, including romantically, something Ashley will bring up if you romance Liara... ironically considering she only brings it up to bitch about how she can't get Shep's dick... how strange that fraternization isn't an issue when she's crawling into Shep's bunk.
    I just. Look I know it's fucking stupid, but I was still on active duty when I played this game the first time and it's just so fucking. Argh. Shit's heinous. Almost as heinous as butchering Master Gunnery Sergeant into the "Gunnery Chief" mess, apparently after the designer responsible had a damn seizure and no one bothered to edit the copy. Also Ashley being a Master Gunnery Sergeant in her mid 20s tops is fucking hilarious. Gunnery Sergeant would be a stretch, but buyable, plus it's one of the coolest military ranks in human history.
    Stupid nitpicks, but fuck this shit puts me up the wall almost as much as Ashley herself. Kaidan is slightly less annoying and easier to ignore so I generally let him die. It's not like Ashley or Kaidan ever leaves the ship with me in any of the three games unless I'm forced to bring them.
