Indeed. Quincy put a lot of great voices together for overlap. Lionel and Stevie. Paul and Kenny. Tina and Billy. Diana and Michael. Dionne and Willie. Huey and Kim with Cyndi in the back. But yes the Bruce and Stevie duet was the cherry on top.

In 1985 American entertainer and social activist HARRY BELAFONTE had the idea to organize the recording of a song including all the generation's best-known music artists. He planned to have the proceeds donated to a new organization called UNITED SUPPORT of ARTISTS for AFRICA (USA for AFRICA). The non-profit foundation would then provide food and relief aid to starving people in Africa "WE ARE THE WORLD" is a CHARITY single originally recorded by the supergroup USA for AFRICA in 1985. It was written by MICHAEL JACKSON and LIONEL RICHIE and produced by QUINCY JONES and MICHAEL O' MARTIAN for the album WE ARE THE WORLD. With sales in excess of 20 million copies, it is the eighth BEST SELLING physical single OF ALL TIME.

I was born in 1979 and the famine in Ethiopia was the first news story that I remember taking notice of. I remember 6-year-old me asking my mom “why can’t we send food on planes?”
The first time I heard this song I remember crying partly bc it was so beautiful (my brain was like that… there’s also a Bach piece that made me cry every time I heard it) - but more importantly, I sensed that these people were trying to help. At the time I think the only one I knew who was, was Michael Jackson…. My dad liked Hall & Oates but I didn’t know what they looked like…. Oh and I think Stevie Wonder. Otherwise I didn’t know what a big deal everyone else was……… but I felt in my heart they were trying to help those people I had seen on the news.
Almost 40 years later and I still get choked up.

This was done in 1985 on the heels of Band-Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas?
Both were to raise relief money for Africa. They were gripped in a record famine that was killing millions of people.
We Are World initially (it still is for various projects) raised 75 million dollars, at the time.
Do They Know It's Christmas raised 10 million in one year.
The Band-Aid concert raised another 127 million.
Other relief charities also created concerts that raised money.
The most help came from everyday citizens.
Dan Aykroyd was part of a band called Blues Brothers, which was also a movie.
All of the artists are worth checking out!

I was around 14 when this magic happened. This song was played all over the World. I remember the day of 28th of March of 1986, like over 6.000 radio stations all over the planet, played the song simultaneously at 10:15am. I remember in schools (Italy) when they told us that the song would have been played all over the planet and it has been so... It has been the biggest moment of unification that I ever lived in my life. Something that is just utopia, a dream, at the day of today... I'm so glad that I'm coming from that era. Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie materialized a masterpiece that night in L.A. This song has been made for charity. All those superstars went for free to spend the night in a studio to record the song. Some of them arrived there straight from the American awards etc .. They all left just when the job was done in the morning. No financial compensation for that long amazing job that they did. A support to Africa, that's it. There is a fantastic documentary (presented "hosted" by Jane Fonda) that shows part of that magical night. Whoever is attracted by this song and wants to know more, I suggest to watch that documentary.

Not sure if it was mentioned but there is an updated version of this song that was done for the 25th Anniversary to support Haiti after a devasting earthquake. A few others are Canada's "Tears are not enough" UK has "Do they know it's Christmas" Voices that Care" was done by actors & actresses and there is also one from the metal bands at the time but I can't remember the name. They are all worth watching. Happy Listening! Great reaction!

This kind of collaboration to never happen today. Yes I'm aware they did remake the song with newer artists, but they were nowheres near the same caliber as the stars were in this day. These were legends. These people were the people that are the foundation of everything that you listen to today. It shocks me how many younger people don't know. Today it's All about Love of money and boosting your career. Of course they were egos back in the day but they were able to set those aside to do something for the greater good. And they did not get paid. They didn't need a boost to their career they were already legends with their careers made. You also don't have a Michael Jackson today to get everything together. Only someone with his power and his clout could bring all of these names together and co-write the song and arrange it. I believe the last time there was any collaboration together was after 9/11 and I don't believe any of them appeared together. Unless these are people who were more than willing to just sing a couple lines and then sing in the choir, nobody was demanding top billing or the kead vocals. Tell me that that would happen today!

I was 9 when this song was released in 1985. I remember that it was big, not just because of the star power of the musicians who recorded the song but also because of the reasons why they recorded it. USA for Africa recorded it for free because Ethiopia, was experiencing a severe famine that had been going on for about 2 years at the time.Through the sale of the album, I think USA for Africa raised about 65 million dollars, which they then donated to various charities that could provide relief.
When it was first released, it was number 1 on several different charts (R&B, Adult Contemporary, etc). Although it only remained number 1 for about a month, it became the highest selling single of 1985.
I used to know all the lyrics, because our music teacher would always have us sing it in class. It always felt special to hear it played.

Not saying it wasn't as enjoyable or didn't have amazing icons. Just maybe not as "packed full"?? Only because they had a very tight schedule for recording the original. I know Boy George came in at almost the absolute last minute. There is "The making of" for both of these amazing songs which are just fun to watch! This one had the luck of having everyone coming straight from an awards show. So they had the "time off" already!
