- The Staple Singers perform "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There" at the 1999 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, when they were inducted into the Hall of Fame.
I am tired of my generation. We need to come home and get our souls fed via music. This is real soul music. This is when. Music had meaning 😭
"Pops" Staples is a legend, he was 84 there! Damm
WOW...LOL Lauryn Hill and Ziggie Marley feeling it :)
mikigamba he passed a year later
Well preserved by the HOLY GHOST.
Beautiful
mikigamba Damn he don’t look a day over 83! Haha
Beautiful tunes of our good old days. Still sounding great today, 2024. Wonderful!
I agree, she does still sound good today, which is a testament to her wonderful talent, however, this was 1999. The audience was comatose though. Not sure WHAT THEY were listening to🤦🏽♀️.
Damn, I would have been dancin' and singin' in the isles with the Staple Singers. How in the hell can anyone sit when they are playing? They are legendary!
I got up & jived & it felt good even for a white girl! I love this beat & wow they don't make music like this no more! This beats rap up one side & down the othar! The words speak to me too. Lying to the races. It's neva stopped. Da bomb!
Just worry about it you stop worrying the crowd
I know right? I’d be at least be getting down in my seat…
What I thought was weird in this video is this is the Hall of Fane and the majority of the audience is just sitting there like they’ve never danced or feel rhythm in their life…shame on them
OKAY?!!!🧡🧡🧡🤣
"Take the sheet off your face, boy. It's a brand new day." Now those are lyrics! And they say "boy" to top it all off. I remember hearing this in the 70's and was a bit shocked but i loved it! White girl from the 'burbs here, btw. Love love love these guys!❤
Lord, I could listen to Pops and Mavis sing all day!
Nothing like The Staples Singers! SING MAVIS!
It's a cryin' shame it took over 20 years to be inducted!! They have always been great. Mavis is a national treasure.
It has to be 25 years since your first album before you're eligible. For instance Are You Experienced? came out in 1967 but the Jimi Hendrix Experience wasn't inducted until 1992.
The inductions mean nothing. We know The Staples were great but some mediocre tat gets inducted.
Pop's Staples is the man. Pure R&B. Mavis nails it everytime! Here voice is intoxicating. Can't sit still when this comes on the radio. Pull the car over, get out and dance your freakin' ass off!
YES
Jeffrey - I hear ya👍
Mavis...Mavis Staples
THE BEST
I love how they toned it all down at the beginning especially, so he could still lead, as his voice is soft now. Later on she says, "don't worry, I won't leave ya Pops!" that's true love right there.
Rest in Peace and Love Forever Pervis Staple. 85. (05.13.21)
Thanks for all the music.
Bless your Soul Brother.
✌❤🎶♾🌟🙏

I just can't get over Mavis and her voice. I absolutely love her. The woman just oozes soul from her pores. There are only two other women that can hold a candle to her and they are Mahalia Jackson and Patti Labelle. Such powerful and beautiful voices they all are.
Don't forget Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner
Mahalia jackson
@misstury606 I have to agree with you on that. Aretha & Tina Turner are great signers but Mahalia Jackson, Mavis Staple and Patti LaBelle have voices that are other worldly and spiritual. They sing with every fiber of their being; from their core.
Etta James out did Aretha Franklin in that era!
@user-zj1tw8qp4l No Etta did not. No one was touching the Queen, especially in the 60's and 70's.
Love how right at the :18 second mark of Respect Yourself, Mavis "catches" that Pops is having a bit of trouble remembering the lines. Immediately, she jumps in and takes over the lead until she hears that he is now good, and then "hands" it back to him! Class Act!!
***** The guy was 70 years old in this video. Cut him some slack. I think by the phrase "class act," Davidmurray1952 meant how the daughter handled it so that his slip up didn't ruin the song, then effectively turned it back over to him seamlessly without interrupting the song.
crispmom 70 is not cutting it. He was 85. Pops ruled. :)
+Tony Saber These people don't know anything else. Siniging is what they are born to do. You don't like it, don't look or listen. because I think even though they maybe be old they can still outsing some of the youngsters!
well then we agree on disagree. In this case the only "harm" Pops Staples does is hurting your ears.
+Tony Saber keep up with the unrespectfulness. As I said before we agree on disagree. I don't know what you do but I do hope when you're that age you'll get the same "respect" you display now. Maybe you'll remember this conversation. Be well.
Such a beautiful, talented family. They have provided spiritual, soulful music to us for decades. Love it! Mama, I know you still listening in 2022.
Mavis always performs like it's her last chance! She gives 1000%!
Man those songs take me back to the day
Rest in Peace Yvonne Staples
the REAL thing! take us there.....
The legendary Staples Singers! They are just incredible! All glory goes to God for blessing us with songs of inspiration and hope which we need more than ever today in the year 2020! RIP Pop Staples. We love and miss you! ❤ 🙏🙏🙏🙏
None better !!
Always like them.....I am a child of the 70's!
My best friend Clare (passed away a few years ago) would listen to The Staple Singers and when I am really missing her, I come and listen to them and my heart doesn't hurt as much.... the joy and the smiles in their music lifts me.
Blessings
The Staple Singers are a Gift from GOD.
So happy to see Mavis Staple honored at the Kennedy Center, this lady along with her family are legends. I'm sure "Pop's" is somewhere smiling.
OMG. I could listen to this kind of music all day and never get tired takes me back to my teenage years I am 72 years young love it May 25 2020
You know what Mavis, held it up for for the staples singers that night. Pop held his own. But back in the day!!!! But you know what? POP, really did carry them. We love you Family staples
good old 70's !!!
Rip to all the great leaders we lost that paved the way in our fight for justice and equality for all
So glad they got into the Hall before ole pops died.
It's nice that Pops got in before he passed away - which was not too long after the induction.
Yes...he deserved it.
should have been inducted 30 years earlier though
One of my favorite soul groups ever. Love to hear Mavis sing. 🎶 🎶
Over 40 blessed years. They started out singing gospel and I loved the gospel albums too. That’s amazing to be successful in both genres
Yes he said that he paid homage to her... in the song "Bad" and so forth....
This is real R&B not the crap they have today...Some of the stuff I hear today is and insult to 70's R&B
Weldon Strother that is real r b there is feeling s
EXCATLY
Well, first of all, it's really gospel music. Secondly, stop dissing the generations or descendants of black R&B and gospel groups artists like the Staples Singers, Gladys Night & the Pips, Sly &The Family Stone, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Sam Cooke, James Brown, etc.... and, many of today's black young people and kids sing great.., all throughout the South. I'm talkin' 'bout da church.
Say it again!
Today’s music is pure trash and doesn’t even deserve to be called “R&B”
The Staple Singers are one of the best!!
Their music is as fresh today (2017) as it was when it first came out. The music is timeless. If you aren't dancing to it, you had better check yourself cause you have likely passed on.
REAL CLASS ACT / LEGEND GREAT LYRICS /BIG UP RERSPECT
I love her voice
I wish they could live forever with this Good music! Whew!
Now that's MUSIC WITH REAL SOUL!!! OXOX

I first heard of the Staples Singers when they performed at the Soul to Soul Concert held in Accra, Ghana. Other artistes we're Santana, Ike and Tina Turner, and Wilson Pickett. Years later I found out that Prince played the Soul to Soul video at his concerts after sound check and before his concerts started. He must have heard about Soul to Soul from Mavis Staples whom he was close to.
AAawww ...good music ...back in the day ...when ...men were men ...and women were glad they were...

I don't mind being 'old' so much when I can call this music 'my generation's.'! (Musicians of this caliber did not need auto-tune).
I love their music, very talented family.
That crowd participation was horrible for Our Gospel & Soul Legend We Salute You Ms Mavis Then & Now
🎼🎤💎❤Lauren Hill knowz the STAPLES ROCK!
My memory of this song was when the DJ at Armondos Disco in Acapulco spun this song at 3 in the morning. Place was jamming. The early 1970s was an era. I'll take you there. Wish I could go back. I'm 74 now. Kinda sucks
This can relate a lot to the life styles of today even though it is an older song
agree.
They bring a lot of joy when they perform. Wow!
The great Staple Singers. I love them all.
I think this was last performance of all the original Staples singers together before Pops passed away the next year.
Legends of Gospel & Soul!

Cherish the memories. We will never hear music like this again with our current artists.

No matter how many times Mavis sings this song, she always sings it with such feeling!
Now I know where Michael Jackson get that "Chamon" from in his music his keep saying as part of the lyrics in his songs.
Doing the the bad era Michael Jackson use that word shamone
Yes he did! Mavis was doing the shamones when Mike was a little boy!
