From their gospel beginnings through the folk-rock era to their soul music peak, the Staple Singers traveled a long, artistically-rich road into the mainstream of American music, spreading messages of peace, equal rights and love. When the Staples -comprised of family patriarch Roebuck “Pops” Staples and daughters Cleotha, Mavis and Yvonne- joined Stax in 1968, they were working alongside major rock acts at forums like the Fillmore West and East. Over the next few years, The Staple Singers saw 12 chart hits, including "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There", both off their 1972 breakthrough album, Be Altitude: Respect Yourself. The Staples continued to record through 1994, when they found a new audience with their cover of The Band’s “The Weight” for MCA Records’ compilation “Rhythm, Country & Blues.” Mavis Staples, who received her first GRAMMY® Award in 2011, continues to record and tour, performing everywhere from the White House to the Kennedy Center Honors stage to major festivals like Outside Lands. Most recently, Staples is the subject of documentary “Mavis!”

This is what we need in 2023
Not easy making it in this world Love yourself and Respect yourself. ❤🙏🏽
Gets to my soul on such a deep level... loves me my Staple Singers!!! STILL applying in March 2024. 💜💯
❤
We don’t have enough of this in the world today.
This will always be in so let's ask popular artists today to release this now..
This song can be played for many generations to come...it STILL applies 40 years later in 2022.
And 50 years later ! 🤭😄❤
For real! The song is very profound. I know that's a lot of the songs from the '60s and the '70s have some deep meaning in them. Even the '80s. You move on into the '90s and it's still somewhat prevalent but 2000 onwards, it's mostly cookie cutter, recyclable, bubble gum paper-thin claptrap.
Now 2023 almost gonna be 2024 soon❤ bless you all.
Indeed👍❤️
Still relevant!
Another ageless classic with the Swampers in Muscle Shoals, some of the best music ever made had those guys involved.
"You're going out the world backwards like you did when you first come here"
Respect, very much lost today. I don't even think the majority of people today even know what the word means, especially respecting themselves.
Ain’t it interesting how relevant this song still is and probably always will be?
Two words. RESPECT. YOURSELF.
DEE dee dee dee...Dahn dahn dahn da....
I don't think the staple singers get their credit they really deserve I love this family and their music
Ummmm have you seen their list of awards, they are not underated at all
When I hear this song today in 2023 I can’t help but think of some of today’s politicians. God help us! And God bless the USA🇺🇸. This song still resonates 40+ years later.
GET IT POP'S. THAT'S RIGHT.
Just get out the way and let the gentleman do his thing!
I’m not walking around thinking the world owe me something because I’m here.
2024 working on respecting myself.
Ole Pop's a BAD MAN!!!! Makes that Guitar talk and Mackin' at tha same time.
"Respect Yourself" is my most favorite Staple Singers' song. Its harmony and the lyrics blend perfectly together. It is appropriate and suitable for listening to at any time of the day or night, even played and sung in church. Also, this song beats the living daylights out of rap and hip-hop music.
This tune has a lowdown, filthy, funky, nasty Groove. Make Grandma & Grandpa wanna shake a tail feather.
The music comes from the church.
God is Love! Gramma and Grammpa know that!!🤙🏽
A classic never dies!
Respect yourself... Staple singers... Xxxxx J Xxxxxxxx
It’s like you can hear Pops Staples passing the torch to Mavis Staples in this song. Incredible recording!

Put your hand over your mouth when you cough that would help the solution, this applies now in 2020 with this Covid-19, words to live by.
Now you better preach this message!
You better believe that they knew what they were saying while they were saying it. Michael had been wear face masks for years before Covid reached America. A lot of celebs knew what was up before the Pandemic 😷.
This is true soul music
Wish I had paid attention back then.
The Staple Singers song (Respect Yourself) is incredibly relevant in these tough ever trying (days) if you listen and hear the words in the song with your heart (❤) & soul you will feel and just know what's being & said is for (all) who can hear, because it's (truly) the sign of the times that you have to not only (Respect Yourself)💯✔ but (everyone) whose ever been where we're going on in the days (yet) to come you need to have (respect)for (all) 💯💯💯✔*
I remember parents playing this track during my childhood. #great track. :))
The words are true and mean so much
Excellent!
Nice in 2024 💕💙💙💙💕
Staples Singers told 'em... Aretha Franklin told 'em ... few listened... R_E_S_P_E_C_T
We could build a communion that depends upon honoring one another... trust truth. Inner truth work prevents further damage to our own relations in our karmic debts.
Om 🕉
Still jammin' this in 2024.
After all these yrs--their music brings out the soul-Nothing but Love.🔥🎶🎶🎶🎶
The idea 48 years later different generations really think they saying things we did not say when I was a teen, and while serving my country back then. Pisses me off' a dollar late and a day short" as always"
