If you get time watch the movie “Bohemian Rhapsody“ it tells the backstory of Queen all the way up to this performance. The other living members of queen collaborated with the director and producers of this movie. It’s an up-and-down roller coaster of emotions while you watch this movie
1985, who had a Cell phone.? At least none that took Pictures. We were still Landline Locked..! Think the first Cell phone went up for Sale in 1984. @ a Cost of $3.900 U.S.D. I didn't have one for sure..! Great Concert mind. 🤗
Everyones holding up their arms, but no one is holding a phone in their hand, everyone is just being there in the moment and the only thing recorded of this legendary concert is in their memory.
That's true. A common rejoinder nowadays is that if we'd have had smartphones back then, people would have been doing the same thing, but that misses the point. Of course we would if it had developed at the same pace and we'd become accustomed to using them all the time, because we are the same creatures now as we always have been, but the point is that the technology has changed our behaviour and we don't really experience these events properly anymore, the technology tempts us into distraction. Much as the internet dilutes our normal human behaviour and can bring out the worst in us. We are tempted to use these technologies and often get some sort of satisfaction or even tangible benefits from doing so, but it comes at a cost. I definitely think that aspects of life such as experiencing a live, communal event are better without smartphones and cameras.

90s kid here, born in 96, my mother and father born in the early 60s and mid 60s. Lets just say, Queen somewhat raised me. So sad I will never witness this in life but forever proud to know each song word from word. My mother is a singer, piano player and my father plays the drums and also sings. Queen is in my DNA. ❤ Much love from South GA, USA. 2024.
My god Freddie had some charisma. The entire audience held in the palm of his hand from the time he stepped on stage to the time he left. I remember watching it and there was no other act that came close to Queen that day. Sheer utter pop genius. All these years later and I still miss him, the consummate showman..
You know what's crazy? All those people in the audience are in their 60's and 70's. We never thought we would get old. Forever young. Time doesn't stand still.
His doctor told him not to do this show because he had a vocal cord infection. He obviously did it anyway. This is Freddie Mercury with infected vocal cords. Fu¢|
It was the best performance ever. For those who where there....no high technology involved, just a rock band with the loudest and clearest voice on the planet.... Freddie, its just like yesterday and it will always be like that. You left too early. You are deeply missed by millions...
This is 39 years ago and it's still incredible. Freddie could sing 3-4 octaves! A musical genius. He fought to the end. Today he could have been saved. ❤

I was 7 years old when this played and I remember my uncle watching this. My aunt is a lesbian and dealt with a lot of the BS in the '80s so she was a huge queen fan and other artists that were coming out back then! As I watch it today it brings back a lot of memories. This man was probably one of the most talented singers to ever walk the face of Earth. These kids today do not know what a real live performance is. I'm not a Taylor Swift fan but you can take Taylor Swift and every single pop music star today and put them together and they still would not equal the talent of Freddie Mercury! The man had a voice of gods! He was an entertainer He knew how to get the crowd going. Love how he blows kisses at the audience and he knows that he's good You can see his pride in his work. There's no voice clean up. No pre-recorded background music. This is straight talent. This is when singers were actual artists and they sounded better live. There will never be another live performance like this. There will never be another Freddie Mercury.
As an African American woman growing up in the city of Chicago in the 70s, I TRULY was in love with this man, I'm almost 60. My older brother and sister listened to Rock in our household. I have always loved Queen and Freddy Mercury. If I'm not mistaken, this might have been the last time that we saw him alive and performing.
Each member of Queen held an advanced degree before touring with the band. So, inspirational! Freddy had a degree in graphic arts and design. John May was working on his PHD in astrophysics. John Deacon had a degree in electrical engineering. Roger Taylor had his degree in biology. Truly amazing young men.
I am 23 years old and it is truly impressive what this man has caused with that extravagant voice...without a doubt the best in history, I am from Argentina
Bono was backstage with other musicians and said to them, “That sound you just heard was Queen stealing this show”. It has been called “The twenty minutes that changed music”.
for any of us who (are old enough and) saw Queen with the original lineup all I can say is we really miss Freddie soooo much. He was a part of our family and what a voice. LA Forum 77, 80, and 82.
WE GREW UP IN THE BEST MUSIC AGE 75 here and these fellas are G.O.A.T.. SOME SAY THE STONES. BEETLES, LED ZEP, AEROSMITH,...MANY OTHER GREATS BUT NOTHING IS QUEEN. Musicians, composers, technicians, poets and the paradigm of perfection.
this is hands down one of, if not THE, most amazing performance Ive ever seen. No special effects, not a dozen background dancers, just a mindblowing performance.
i was 18 visiting London, went to surprise concert with family and some friend's. When Queen came on stage the stadium was electric. This concert I will never ever forget. RIP Freddy

I like to think of this as a real life canon event. In every Universe, there is a Freddie Mercury, there's a band called Queen, and there is a Live Aid performance that blew the entire world away.
I don't know why this choked me up but it did. I love that thought, that this is something that HAD to happen. Maybe in one of those universes, he's still with us.
I was watching live Aid in 1985 while putting stickers on my nieces toy car for them in my Dad's living room! Queen was absolutely the best 20 minutes of the whole show! They blew everybody away! Their energy, their line up of songs, and not to mention how Freddie would have the whole crowd in complete sink with him, was amazing to watch! ❤ Beautiful! And Awesome to watch! Their music is still great to this day! Timeless! ❤🎼🎵🎶🏆💖

Yep. Once Queen took to the stage, our eyes were glued to the TV! There are other bits of acts that I remember - Bono, George Michael and Paul McCartney having mic issues, but everyone was talking about Queen’s set in the days after.
The camera men and the director are unsung heroes here, this was a live broadcast, streamed across the world with no rehearsal, almost 40 years ago. The panning up as Freddie lifts his arm at , just so much so the sun breaks through to give that golden glow.
Am I the only person to be crying over this clip? Just the musicality, the way he took control, the feedback people gave him and ultimately knowing what happened shortly after. 😭😭😭 What a singer and legend.
I am in Tanzania for work and fly home today. I had a free day yesterday and took the ferry from Dar Es Salaam to Zanzibar where Freddie Mercury was born. I visited the museum that was created in his honour on the ground floor of the house where he lived. It is small but quite moving, with his music playing in the background. It motivated to watch, yet again, Queen's iconic 1985 Live Aid concert. Freddie was said, "I'm not going to be a Star, I'm going to be a Legend." He was right.
I love this video..I keep replaying it.. Freddie Mercury's performance was marvelous..I listen to all of Queens music . Freddie Mercury was very talented..
"i sometimes wish id never been born at all" ohh freddie if you just knew how much you did and still do for us.. you are one of my reasons to still go on in this earth. I just had to watch this after watching the movie, and I have come to the conclusion that no matter how many great male vocalists have come and gone, Freddie Mercury IS IRREPLACEABLE. I hope and pray you've found peace.
A few details that show the greatness of this set: - the super fast sound checks at the beginning - the studio versions have been rehearsed differently especially for this set - this allowed them to stay perfectly within the designated set time of 20 minutes - the volume limiter was set 0.2 decibels higher, which really made them sound louder in the stadium - they had practiced exactly this set for a week to do it exactly the same during the performance.
I didn't know this, but it makes perfect sense. I played in a band for 25 years, and it often took hours of practice to pull off 30 seconds of seemingly spontaneous "magic."
@@paulharrisonadventuregearm5457 Everybody’s entitled to their own opinion. Prince was amazing no doubt, but you’re comparing artists full concerts that had months of preparation to a last minute inclusion that went 22 minutes. But if you like them more than that’s cool.
Beyond legendary, I genuinely don't know what the definition of this is, best 20 minutes in the history of rock, we miss you freddie, no one can touch you, end of....
Bowie was up next, apparently the quote was, how am I supposed to follow that...? Respect the hell out of David as an artist, writer, but he's not wrong, legends in their time......
I am watching randomly on UA-cam and Holy moly this was electrifying! I've never seen a show like this! Audience participation is insane. Phones should be banned at concerts
I know lots of people have already wrote this, but it doesn’t matter. This performance must surely go down as the greatest live performance by any musician(s), EVER. Pure genius, total mastery, ultra-talented musicians.
I only bought Queen’s Greatest Hits in January of 1985 & a couple of their other studio albums shortly afterwards as a 14 year old with my paper round money. So they were one of the acts I was looking forward to at the forthcoming televised Live Aid gig that July. They were amazing of course & I made sure I saw them the following year on The Magic Tour. Good job I did, as little did I know at the time, that was the last opportunity to see them live!
I rewatch this performance like once or twice a month, and I always tear up at how as soon as he starts playing, everyone sings with him, Freddie really was and is a god among men
Love that moment he has with the camera guy, making him a part of the show. Plenty of other rock artist would have scolded him for being in the way, but Freddie made it a moment!
This was the best live performance of all time, but I have to give David Bowie a lot of credit for showing up unrehearsed and having to perform live on stage immediately after Queen. Who would want to have to follow Queen after this? But David Bowie put on a great show and kept the crowd happy.
Not to mention “heroes” is one of the greatest rock songs ever. His quick to go temp band did a great job after Queen set, but check out Bowie “Hero” concert with his killer band , 230 million views on utube. Its unbelievable!
Every member of Queen could actually legit sing and sing well, but Fred was just straight out of this world… his control, pitch, volume, vibrato, just unbelievable
I agree, the sound stage was excellent. I can hear every instrument and the guitar solos were just the right level, even when Freddie switched mics the level was exact! what a production!

If you get time watch the movie “Bohemian Rhapsody“ it tells the backstory of Queen all the way up to this performance. The other living members of queen collaborated with the director and producers of this movie. It’s an up-and-down roller coaster of emotions while you watch this movie

I like how everyone is living in the moment. No cellphones. Just clapping in sync and singing along. What a time…what a moment.
Lo
1985, who had a Cell phone.? At least none that took Pictures.
We were still Landline Locked..!
Think the first Cell phone went up for Sale in 1984. @ a Cost of $3.900 U.S.D.
I didn't have one for sure..!
Great Concert mind. 🤗
Cellphones with camera functionality hadn't been invented yet, to be fair.
Yea, we had not even heard of a bag phone back then. Good times. I'm going to be first in the time machine!
@@andrewh2817Thank God!!!!
@angrypotato857 Absolutely! I was 14 back then, it was phenomenal!

I was at a concert back in those days when Freddie came flying in a helicopter. So cool. One of the few concerts I ever went to. Happy I did.
I always come here and watch this magnificent 20min concert of my all time favorite band, QUEEN.
You stated a lot in your message and I agree with your posting. you did a great job. TU. TU
That night every single person in that audience had a personal experience with Freddie. Best live performer of all time.
Its 2024 and this is still the BEST live performance in rock history. ABSOLUTELY OFF THE CHARTS!😭😮💨

Watching the movie “Bohemian Rhapsody” And that actor is playing the hell out of this role!! He’s literally hitting every move perfectly!
Watched it now 5 times brilliant movie
A few details that show the greatness of this set:
- the super fast sound checks at the beginning
- the studio versions have been rehearsed differently especially for this set
- this allowed them to stay perfectly within the designated set time of 20 minutes
- the volume limiter was set 0.2 decibels higher, which really made them sound louder in the stadium
- they had practiced exactly this set for a week to do it exactly the same during the performance.
Absolute professionalism from top to bottom. They were surrounded by great craftsmen and their own talents, which were plenty. Rock Gods, truly.
I didn't know this, but it makes perfect sense. I played in a band for 25 years, and it often took hours of practice to pull off 30 seconds of seemingly spontaneous "magic."
