- Lyrics:
I pulled into Nazareth, I was feelin' about half past dead;
I just need some place where I can lay my head.
"Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?"
He just grinned and shook my hand, and "No!", was all he said.
(Chorus:)
Take a load off Fannie, take a load for free;
Take a load off Fannie, And (and) (and) you can put the load right on me.
I picked up my bag, I went lookin' for a place to hide;
When I saw Carmen and the Devil walkin' side by side.
I said, "Hey, Carmen, come on, let's go downtown."
She said, "I gotta go, but m'friend can stick around."
(Chorus)
Go down, Miss Moses, there's nothin' you can say
It's just ol' Luke, and Luke's waitin' on the Judgement Day.
"Well, Luke, my friend, what about young Anna Lee?"
He said, "Do me a favor, son, woncha stay an' keep Anna Lee company?"
(Chorus)
Crazy Chester followed me, and he caught me in the fog.
He said, "I will fix your rags, if you'll take Jack, my dog."
I said, "Wait a minute, Chester, you know I'm a peaceful man."
He said, "That's okay, boy, won't you feed him when you can."
(Chorus)
Catch a Cannonball, now, t'take me down the line
My bag is sinkin' low and I do believe it's time.
To get back to Miss Annie, you know she's the only one.
Who sent me here with her regards for everyone.
(Chorus)
Directed by: Martin Scorsese
Anybody that doesn't like this wasn't raised right.
YES
Truth
Some people don't have an ear for great music. They've been raised on less.
Or it simply isn't to their taste being a more logical explanation. The fucking shite some people will talk for a thumbs up is mind boggling.
@@paulbutler43 yeah. Not to their taste because they weren't raised right is logical enough.
This song was performed when entertainers could actually entertain.
Roger that, Gary...
Mavis Staples is one of the greatest voices ever. Smooth as silk and powerful as dynamite
I just love Pops
For sure. Her entire family had talent
And beautiful too!
And she’s still singing today
Movie is top 5 music
Miss Mavis and Levon on stage together…..Heaven on Earth ❤
Could be the greatest live song ever recorded. It is a vocal masterpiece with flawless playing .
I wonder if they knew what they were creating.
@@MikK5 Of course they knew. If we knew it the minute we heard it, they knew it too.
I believe that Roger Waters called "Music from big Pink' the second most important album ever.
Will never be duplicated, the best
Definitely the greatest...when I hear Levon's voice it is like hearing the gospel
O,K guys and Girls, Have been Listening to this master peace for over 35 years, the Band and the Staples together on this occasion makes this song number one maybe 2 of all time, who would agree?
Yep , it’s on another level 👍
The Stables made this great ☺
#1. A song to live by.
it is spelled masterpiece,,, sheesh
@@ronnietoots6797 Sorry Ronnie, would tell you am Disieksik but can not spell that ether, Just a simple tradesman who likes good music. Kind regards
The best version of this song. Love it
Mavis Staples, beautiful God-given voice.
I love that she mouths “that’s beautiful” at the very end.
RIP Robbie, 08-09-2023, aged 80. One of the greatest rock songs ever written. When he played “The Weight” for Dylan for the first time, Bob said “you wrote that” letting Robbie know this was that good..Truly one of the great rock guitarist’s ever and just as great of song writer as well. With his death leaving Garth as the sole survivor of The Band..
THANKS Tccchamp5877, The Boys sure were generous with thier favorite singers LOVE the staples ALWAYS !!!! GO GARTH !!!! I’m trying to get my kids into this ,sent it to all 3 ! 🎉❤❤❤ ❤
I was only born in 75so didn't get to know these guy till twentys ...finest musicians I ever had the privilege to speculate on they're work as a band no pun intended not to mention in they're own individualism as solo artists ..timeless....thanks.. Levon ,Rick, Richard,Garth never will be replaced...
Oh damn I done forgot Mr Robbie Robertson...
dont forget RONNIE HAWKINS ,,he is alsso gone but not forgotten!!!!!!!!!!
Sheesh!
It's pretty evident that song was written by the guy from Arkansas playing drums and not the Canadian.
I was 17 year's old when I saw the Last Waltz now I'm 62 what a great. Movie and sound track
Me too!.
I'm 67when the world was great ireamber it well
I was 12 and still get goosebumps only thinking about the sensation sitting in that huge cinema and being mesmerized
Pay attention people, this is what you call music. With the Staples singing it just oozes soul and the Band is right on point. A true classic.
"Listen, people. Hear what I say." :)

Just listen and appreciate while learning!! This is music!! At its best
@@Kreepyb5 it simply does not get better than this
This kind of music is gone forever.
Oh, please, let's hope not!
Some of us are trying to bring it back!
Then what’s the point?!
Timeless! RIP to amazing Robbie Robertson. 🌹
Cheers friend
Making music on another plane.. 🎼🎶❤️
don't forget levon he was a genius
RIP 😢❤
Pouring one out for Robbie today.
I love Danko's turn at the mic here. Just magic.
"If ya take ol' JACK, my dog" - Man, it's hard to make it through that.
Rest Easy Robbie Robertson!!!!
I really feel sorry for all the folks in the world who don't know how special this song is
Farewell, Robbie and many thanks...sigh.
This is MUSIC. Not this garbage you hear today.
Robbie Robertson has now set down the weight.
❤
Rick Danko is one happy bass player -- Rick always gave it 100%. RIP Rick Danko -- you will never be forgotten.
Our parents were the greatest generation but we are the luckiest generation because of this music!!
It was & is incomparable. Levon & Mavis? unbeatable!
A combination of Mavis Staples and Levon Helm is like Christmas morning with unlimited presents..
enigmatic harmonies, even angelic in the American Songbook of songs.
You said it man!
Couldn't have said it better.
Levon Helm was an American treasure! You nailed it, friend!
And presence...

The Band And The Staples Make It A Classic....
Great DVD To Watch... (The Last Waltz)
RIP To Those Who Are No Longer With Us...
Thank You For The Music....
It will the 45th anniversary of he Last Waltz on Thanksgiving 2021. There will never again be that much talent on a single stage.
Am now in my 70's having seen many great concerts but The Last Waltz has to be the best.
Damn!!! That was incredible!
Just heard Robbie Robertson passed away. Had to come and watch this performance. RIP and thanks for music like this!
The Band was full of multi-instrument playing members, now that is true musicianship and this combination with the Staples was just amazing how their vocals blended, Rest easy those that have gone before us!!!! your music lives on.
When Mavis gets carried away by the music and starts clapping. Pure magic.
👏 amazing
RIP Robbie. This is one of the greatest songs in rock history, and this is the best performance of the song. I've loved "The Band" since their first album came out in 1968: "Music From Big Pink." Garth is now the only band member still alive. Thanks for the hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of enjoyment, listening to your incredible recordings.
Yes,this Band had Soul. Can we all come together as brothers & sisters.
Of course at the " Last Waltz " the Band essentially disassembled . ( With " The Weight " being my favorite song ) As life would have it.... many years down the road I moved across the country and on a bright sunshiney 4th of July day in the park in central Virginia I spotted a cardboard sign stapled to a tree trunk that said " this way to see the band." Now with my music loving 5 year old son on my sholders I felt my heart bump real hard ( See.. I couldnt tell if it said " This way to see the band thats playing here in the park " or This , ladies and gentlemen is the path to see "The Band "play once more ) Difficult as it was I abandoned all manners and with my little boy hanging on we I gently shoved through the crowd constantly whispering " pardon me " and " excuse me " until we broke through , now get this ... to a little deck resting on the green grass to a drum set before .. none other than Levon himself ! Not more than a few feet away we watched as The Band played most of their iconic songs I grew up with until they got to " The Weight "( or as my son calls it "Load off Fanny song ) Walking back to the park center I could hardly believe what I had just witnessed and to this day I count it as a major privlidge to have been there I hear the tune throughout the day... on the radio or the CD player in my old truck...( my son bought that for my 65th birthday , he is now 39 )... life is good at times... and sometimes it,s just downright awesome !
The critics said this song was a dud ., if only Levon could be with us today to show him what a great song it was that he created. Levon rest in piece.
At 70 years of age, this is my all time favourite song, The Band and the Staple singers.
Levon Helm was a national treasure. I cry every time I watch this.
that's why I watch the video of "Ophelia" ya just can't be sad when The Band is playin' Dixieland Jazz
He sure was
R.I.P. LEVON
Me too!
This song always brings me back to the 70's when the Vietnam vet's were coming home. Much love appreciation and respect to them. Some gave all. All gave some.
Fallen Angel showed Robbie to be a visionary. I grew up in Ontario just a few years after these guys, and as a budding keyboard player got to know some people who worked with them. I liked The Band but their nostalgia about the defeated South did not resonate with me.
Decades later, I am astonished by the beauty of the songs in the Big Pink album. Rick Danko remains my favorite singer in the group. His Canadian innocence when interpreting the stories behind the words brought to this moment of northern beauty. It is a story of existential sadness and loneliness, overshadowed by the brilliance of their playing. From their expression of defeat and loss in The Weight, we come to terms what awaits us all as we make our way through this vale of tears. Of course the Staples Singers got it right away!
I’ve never heard this version. It just sweetens the melody that exists in its purest form even further in the ear…
Please listen to Playing for Change version ,it’s a tribute but it’s superb .
This is Scorcese's masterpiece.
We will never see there likes again ,this generation is now sadly leaving us.blessings to them all.
MUSIC JUST BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER.
There will never be another Band, and there certainly will never be another Levon Helm
We lost a treasure today. Aug.9,'23.😢
Not that it matters. But I'm a black guy. This is the ultimate union of Folk and Gospel. BRILLIANT!!
The band.
This song fits just as well downtown as it does in some farm field. I hope that everyone of us has at least a little soul and a little down home redneck in us.
This is an absolute gem. Vocals are out of this world, instrumentation is phenomenal. Rare how the piano and electric keyboards complement each other. Staple Singers gospel sound works perfectly into this song. Mavis, Pops and Levon have charismatic, unique and powerful voices. I don't know if I've ever seen a better collaboration. Love the guitarist's sounds and what a spectacular song he wrote.
Helm was a gift to the music listener and the Staples are just..... legends. If I had a son he'd be named Roebuck...just so I could keep the legend going. Allegedly, Elton John's son is named after Levon Helm (rumor)
In my opinion Mavis was and is the best female singer ever. She put real soul in every song
I'm 69 and The Band's songs still amaze me! Takes me back to when music meant something!
Thanks boys!!
In this old crazy world we live in with music like this we can forget about life for a minute
Where does one even begin to explain how perfect this song is?
Mavis Staples may have the most soulful voice of all time.
Rest in peace Robbie. You'll never know what your music means to me.
When I pick up a guitar, my Uncle Billy said sometimes it’s the note you don’t play. He said to listen to Robbie Robertson, Dicky Betts and Steve Miller. I want to play Kiss solos. I grew up and that advice stayed with me. Thanks Robbie
Robbie was heavily influenced by Roy Buchanan they played together briefly in the Hawks. You can hear Roy in Robbie. Both greats.
Mavis Staples is such a beautiful person!
Damn, back when it wasn't about your image, your dance moves, just your talent. Thank goodness for people from my generation this stuff was captured on film and audio. It gives us something worthwhile to watch or listen to.
Amen!
Levon Helm is Fantastic singer! So underrated!
It's hard to imagine that a time existed when these song lyrics didn't exist.
somehow the world was a little more comforting knowing that Robbie R was in it! God bless all these amamzing artists and the years of work they put in to master thier trade!
50 years of consuming music like taking a breath and I still get speechless when I discover something that moves my soul and brings me to tears...
You took the words right out of my mouth-:)
I just discovered this.Incredible!
The greatest singing drummer ever Levon Helm!!! Great performance! !
Karen Carpenter could sing a bit also.
Ringo doesn't feature? Yellow Submarine?
Per Elton John…Levon is the ONLY drummer that should be singing!
These old songs were great
There is nothing to compare to the likes of this today. What has happened to music.
RIP Robbie Robertson, Robbie Robertson was born July 5, 1943 in Toronto, Ontario. The son of a Jewish father and Mohawk mother, Jaime Robbie Robertson's first brush with live music came at the Six Nations Reservation, his mother's girlhood home; at the age of five, he also gained exposure to the country music of rural America. Not long after-ward, he began taking guitar lessons from a cousin, and gradually started composing his first songs. As time wore on, his musical interests evolved from country to big band to rock, and he eventually dropped out of school to pursue a career as a performer. A TORONTO MUSICAL LEGEND
The best band ever!! Haters stay away?! Long live levon helms and the staple singers!!! Love.love
The band with the Staple Singers wow that's fire
Dylan owes The Band a lot of gratitude.
That is music. Just great. RIP Robbie Robertson and members of The Band and the Staples no longer with us (only Garth and Mavis still with us, I believe).
Danko's verse here is one of my all time favorite vocal performances
Pops and Mavis Staples make this the best version of this song (and I LOVE this song)! Pops Staples has the smoothest voice!
Professionals doesn't even come anywhere close to these people obviously perfectly blessing us with this
Whoever suggested to bring on the Staple Singers for this song is a pure genius.
One of the best concerts ever, as seen in the movie The Last Waltz. If you have not seen it, you should….
Levon Helm was soo damn great with his vocals! Very few singers put that much energy in their delivery like Levon. What a MAN!!!
Levon was painting his masterpiece!!"
One of my heroes.
RIP Pops. I get a big fat grin every time he comes in on his verse whenever I listen.
Back in the day when great music was great music.
Hell yes. Sit up and recognize kids. This is rock and roll at it's highest level
Oh I've recognized alright!
@Patrick O'Brien really?
amazing song but definitely not rock hahah
@@moose-music Honey, rock can be many things, it can sound many different ways. This here: rock. The very belly and grit of rock. Give it another listen, you might start to see what I mean.

My favorite version of my favorite song of all time RIP RR
As good as it gets, this is something I always come back to. Thanks to The Band, the Staple Singers and the original poster. 👏👏❤️❤️
My God. PERFECTION!!
A little solace in a world gone mad.....thanks Levon....and Mavis....WOW
Still missing Richard Manuel 😢 😔 💔
Well put, couldn't have said it better myself.
Damn right.
👍Well said. ☮️
I absolutely agree, they were so I to the song it’s fantastic. Went to a Mavis concert in Australia about 2012/13 and it was fantastic but sadly she didn’t sing The Weight, great night though. And we still have this version from the Last Waltz movie.
Old man here on 12/25/19 surfin' youtube for some of the greatest music ever played.
I am in good place in this lost world.
Welcome! Information age hasn't brought me any riches except for these amazing moments in time... priceless. I feel so blessed to have access to live recordings like these....
Ole man u did the dam thing there .so did r r
It's even more lost now Ned.
Keep the faith Sir 👍🏻
You got good taste brother.
you are sure in a good place, when you are listening to this beautiful music, it's not lost by any means, keep on rockin' nedsellars, God bless
Mavis Staples, one of the great singers of our age.
I'm 58 years old and I was raised up well where music is concerned. I got Buddy Holly from my father and Steely Dan from my mother and I found the rest.
Damn...it does not get better than that.......God Bless The Band......
Just got chills again, for the umpteenth time, when Mavis jumped in.... classic!
I never get tired of listening to this version of "The Weight". What a great blend of styles and musicians.
This is real music, not some of the trash producers today. Love the Staple singers too!!
The Staple Singers, Mavis Staple, national treasures. The Band so deep, so true, so musical!
I miss Mr. Danko, and Mr. Helm, and Mr. Manuel. I wish they were with me now in this scary time (I'm 70+, healthy not good, future uncertain.)
But how great that I have had the opportunity to hear their art!
Now, some of them are singing this in Heaven. Imagine all of the guitarists, drummers and pianists who are joining them. The singers are doing the back up.
THE BAND WAS A GENUINE CLASS ACT BAND THAT WILL CONTINUE TO INFLUENCE EXCELLENT MEANINGFUL HEARFELT BALLADS. SAME KUDOS FOR THE STAPLES FAMILY. MUSICIANS THAT HELPED SOCIETY DEAL WITH DIFFICULT TIMES.
RIP Robbie :(
Does anyone else feel like they just can't hold back from singing along with this version?
Yes indeed. Levon would be proud.
My God it just doesn’t get any better than this. Take me back to the 70s please!
Stumbled on this going down a UA-cam rabbit hole tonight. Reminded me of meeting Levon one night after a show in Houston. He'd invited my wife and I onto the bus (long story...but I had a business relationship with him). When we got there, Levon and Danko were behind closed doors in the very back of the bus, so we visited with Garth for a bit. Eventually, we made our way to the back where Levon welcomed us. He and Danko were in their underwear and had obviously been partaking in a particular herb. I've long since forgotten what we talked about but I recall it being a lovely visit. Levon and Rick were gracious hosts. And, although I don't recall the details of the conversation, I'll never forget the sight of them in their undies. Brings a smile to my face...and this video is killer. RIP Levon and the others who are no longer with us.
The Band stood the test time, Blues are still great and 20 years from now they will just as good..........................
How can you beat Levon, Mavis, and Pop Staples…true musical treasures!!
This is pure, unfiltered soul. The amount of truly great singers in this one performance is astounding. Two of the best groups to ever do it.
R. I. P. Robbie. Pops is Lovely!!!
Last time i cried as an Irish kid from Chicago was 40 years ago,the beautiful Mavis and the Staples and the great, wonderful, outstanding Rick Danko made me cry tonight Dec 4th 2020
