Watching these videos gets me really excited to be a part of the USCG. Leaving in a month, so I'm really nervous. But I want to be a rescue swimmer more than anything I've ever wanted out of life, and my state championship swimming background really gives me the fire and ambition, and it really feels within my grasp. I know probably nobody cares about my personal story, but I just feel so good saying them. Love these videos, inspires me to work harder to prepare myself.
Im going into the coast guard im getting into shape as I speak right now doing a lot of pushup and situps a day a lot of chin up and pullups a day and running 3 miles everyday and im pushing my self further everyday
I am an old Marine veteran. I was always under the impression the CG was a slack basic and/or outfit. I stand corrected. I have viewed all the branches (basic) and experienced Marine basic. The Coast Guard Basic, although not as intense as Marine basic, surpasses the other three branches without argument.
+Billy Ray golf 159 company 2001 graduation. Uscgc tracen is no joke. Marines hardest cogard second or third lives are in our hands. Attention to detail.!Sense of urgency.! Eyes in the boat!!! What's the 5th general rule?! We worked out all day the rest of time we ate and studied. Oh Man memories of Cape, may this stuff is burned into, my brain forever. Chief ruschster was my Cc. What's up chief is it master chief now? Oooooraaaaaaaaaaaaa
I went through the Army version in 1981. Yeah, there was the yelling in-your-face stuff, called every name in the book, pushed, shoved, invited to throw a punch at a Drill (I'll give you one free shot at me!) etc. But all that toned down after about the 4th week or roughly the half way point...unless you really deserved it.
I hated the first CC I got, and loved the second one. But when I graduated, I went to my old CC's office and actually gave him a hug of thanks. He saw what I needed, even though I didn't, and it made me who I am. Thank you Petty Officer Smith. Alpha 138.
In 1965 USCG basic training was 12 weeks. After 10 weeks I got orders to attend FT A school at USNTC Bainbridge , Md. No range week, no graduation ceremony or leave for me - always felt a little bit left out or cheated . Duty on Coos Bay a 311" weather ship out of Portland , Me was hard and gritty. I'm an old man now and realize joining the Coast Guard was the best thing I ever did in my life - VA benefits are terrific - free college , bought a house with no money down or private mortgage insurance , enrolled in VA healthcare , got a small pension for wartime service which has been upgraded to compensation for service connected disability [ a single veteran with no dependents rated at 100% gets $3600 a month] . Karl N ... company G - 57 ... a lifelong commercial fisherman to this day .
Going to Cape May in a few months and I'm really excited to be apart of the Coast Guard and serve the people of this country I've come to know and love. I can't say I'm not nervous because I'm shitting myself sometimes when I think about everything. But in the end, I know it's going to be the best choice I've made in my life. If I get send somewhere around the globe, so be it. But I'd love to stay on the shores of the US and serve. Semper Paratus!
The Coast Guard piloted the landing craft at Normandy during the June 6, 1944 invasion...thought you might want/need to know. Also, living near the water I often see the Coast Guard active on searches or patrolling the waters.
To anyone thinking of joining any of the branches. Research that service and pick a field or trade that interests you, take the tests, get it in writing from your recruiter before going to boot camp that you will be attending A-school for that field or trade directly after boot camp. If you don't, you will be low man or woman, cleaning, chipping and painting, wishing you hadn't joined. It will also be harder for you to get into an A-school, you'll have to strike for one.
@Sanvorae There was good and bad. If I had to do it over again, I would have went straight from boot camp into Cook (Subsistence Specialist?) school. I enjoy cooking and the restaurant trade, and that would have been a good training ground. Instead, I went into the Yeoman rating, and it didn't turn out like I had hoped. I ended up in NYC for nearly 3 years, and I hated it. They offered me a re-enlistment bonus and orders to re-enlist, but I decided to get out. But, I grew up a lot in the CG.
If you are getting ready to go to Coast Guard boot camp you had better prepare yourself mentally and physically. For starters, I suggest getting yourself to a level where you can run (not jog) at least 3 miles and do 100 pushups without stopping. Prepare to have someone screaming in your face constantly. I went to Cape May boot camp in 1974 when the basic training was 13 weeks long and the Coast Guard had a competition with the Marine Corps to have the toughest boot camp. Don't kid yourselves. Unless things have changed dramatically in the USCG they are going to be on your ass and kicking your ass every second you are at Cape May. If you were a slob or acted crazy when I was there you'd be on your way to a living hell in the dreaded Red Belts (now called Performance Enhancement Platoon - PEP) so fast your head would spin. I once saw a guy in Red Belts who had a badly swollen leg who was forced to keep running with his full sea bag until his leg broke as he was running up the steps to enter the mess hall and his Company Commander went over and poured himself a cup of coffee as the recruit lay on the floor of the chow hall screaming in pain. The Company Commander then told the staff in the chow hall NOT to call the ambulance because the recruit wasn't going anywhere until the Company Commander had finished his coffee, which he did sit down and drink while the kid lay on the floor screaming with a broken leg. Some Company Commanders are great people and some are assholes who like to abuse their positions of authority like the Drill Instructor in the series: Band of Brothers. A big man in boot camp and an asshole that nobody respects in the field. Come prepared for the toughest eight weeks of your life at Cape May. They run a tight ship and they don't tolerate any bullshit. And YES, it will be worth it in the long run. A few weeks of pain for a lifetime of honor and pride.
I call BULLSHIT! Was there in Cape May for the 4th of July PICNIC on the beach that year. 'Twas a hot summer there and a fun time in A School shortly thereafter.
My fiancé was planning on seeing the recruiter today.....I have been in service of the US Army for 15 years and currently medically retiring after sustaining injuries during Operation Iraqi Freedom, our training was HELL in bootcamp, but it was just eight weeks, during those eight weeks it seemed like bootcamp was forever, but afterwards, it really is short. A small price to pay to defend and protect our countries freedom, my mother was a Marine, My Father a Soldier, Her Father was a Master Chi
1:28-1:35...........................that is the most important thing you will ever get from the Guard...and it will stay with you forever. ......coastie 1975.
@Sanvorae Back when I served (Mid 70's, Yankee-22) the CG's policy was once you completed an "A" School, you weren't going to get a transfer until you complete your enlistment. They held that over your head, along with a re-enlistment bonus, to try and get you to re-up. I just decided that I wasn't the military type, and got out. I matured a lot in the CG, and learned how to handle responsibility. But, the lifestyle wasn't for me. I'm too much of a free-spirit. Regimentation isn't my thing
Indeed it is. My uncle joined when he was 18. He's 20 years down the road, has a wife and son, makes 6k every 2 weeks (holy shit right?!), has a beautiful home, gets to see the world, and guess what he does.. He inspects ships to make sure they're up to safety standards, then simply tells the captain what he/she has to fix before they can leave port. That's it, 3k a week. The CG is a great place to build your career, and if down the line you find a civilian job you can just not re-enlist.
@ShaunHemp my uncle joined the army 3 times and each time he was told not to try again cuz he has asthma. he passed all of boot camp but then at the end gave him an honorable discharge. i think its the same with the coast guard or anyother military branch
i cant wait to join them i just gotta get in shape first before going there then ill get in even better shape and turn myself into a well repected man of the united states coast guard
@Sanvorae Yeah, it was Yeoman "A" in Petaluma CA. Spent almost 5 months there. Two-Rock is actually a pretty good station. Too bad I couldn't get there on permanent detail. Afterward, was assigned to CGAS Brooklyn, which has since closed. Lived in govt housing at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn. Didn't much like NYC/Brooklyn. Developed a bad attitude and decided it was best for both me and the CG if I got out. It was the right decision for me.
Interesting to see how some of the bootcamp is just like Navy bootcamp. It looks way more intense than what Navy bootcamp was. Definitely seems like theres a lot more yelling and whatnot. Maybe I just lucked out and had easy RDCs. I was going to join the Coast Guard but ended up going with the Navy. I wish I would have stayed with the USCG because I think of where I'd be all the time. I'm definitely going to try to get in when my 4 years is up.
my grandpa got lost in the fog on his motor boat. the coast guard got lost trying to find him. we had to tell the coast guard where to go to find him. lol.
do it mrkovak.....its kinda cool....boot camp aint as bad as this video makes it out to be...its actually quite fun....yes you can go in as a reservist then switch later on but dont do it that way its a pain in the ass withe the paperwork....im active duty and just a month outta basic...im lovin it....youre gonna hate it for the first week or so but then you get used to it....do it but be prepared for a challenge cuz its no easy task....just remember dude...NEVER LOOK THE CC'S IN THE EYES!!!!!!!
I am prior Navy and now want to join the USCG reserves, I hope I make the right decision. I don't want to be miserable in the CG like I was in the Navy.
@Sept0pus a little peice of advice from a ME3 in the good ol USCG, whatever your doing to workout times that by 3 because what ever you think is a good workout is no where closes enough to the ass-whoop'ins ahead, also listen to what your cc's are say not how they say it...ugg theres so many little crap things that can READY you for it if you what some tip e-mail me back future coastie.
Nothin would make me more proud than to wear the U.S.C.G uniform like my Daddy in 88-94. I am 16 and I am preparin myself right now for boot camp, but the only way that I will make it to boot camp is to get past my Moma lol. I see pictures if my Daddy in the Coast Guard and I want to tell him how much I want to be like him and how much I want to join the U.S.C.G and do what he did, but I think it's a little early for that...
@TheHosay666 - If you prefer more stateside duty, you'll get it in the CG. But, if you like the rating you currently have in the Navy, and you want to re-enlist, I'd stay there. The CG doesn't have all the same ratings the Navy has.
I plan on joining the coast guard soon but i was wondering if it is its posible to join the reserves then lator down the line switc to full time , because i still want to finish school
@kattieshack I was also doing the same thing, however, I broke my ankle. So I'm just recovering but I still do situps and pushups. Keep pushing yourself. When are you joining?
This certainly does look like it will be extremely difficult. I, as a freshman in high school, am planning on attending the United States Coast Guard Academy fresh out of high school. I'm almost looking forwards to becoming a better person through the service and training. God bless all members of the Coast Guard. God bless them all!
@singitconnolly15 just fyi the CC(company commanders) and the DS(drill sergents) are just as rough on the females as the males, and theres no platoon or company of just females
@silvertonebass1 hey what are some good tips for a newcomer im highly debating over and over in my head about joining. I want to make the USCG my career not just 4-5 years service. Is that possible??
My husband's looking into joining the Coast Guard. Anyone out there been through boot camp and had previous experience with drill instructors? My husband says his crew coach back in high school was an x-Marine and loved to do drills on them to make them tougher. I'm worried he's too confident in himself; he's been out of college for 4 years now, let alone high school. He's not 18 anymore but he really wants to do this.
Cj Walsh I was in the Coast Guard for 7 years and I has 125 recruits when we started. Only one "older" guy made it through in my company and he was prior service. His crew coach treated him with kid gloves and this video is nothing like boot camp.
+4reelFishing I was in uscg. These videos are exactly what happens. I was golf 159,2001., My Cc Is the guy in the video chief Ruchster. I was 20 when I enlisted. What are the age cut offs now 28 for active 35 for reserves. If you are under 30 you can do it but it'll be harder older you get.
@tharr61 Marines have some of the same non combat jobs that all the branches have... Finance, cook, band, camera man, public affairs, legal services, etc... Just because someone is a marine doesn't mean they are running around with a gun in Afghanistan. Respect all branches because they are all different but have one common goal, To protect our country?
You really just need to come in there with average physical prowess, and iron sensibilities. If your over weight or you can't do basic push-ups then you should work on that but otherwise you can come as you are and you should do fine. I myself have hardly any muscle mass but I can already fulfill the requirements to pass PT. I'm actually looking forward to swimming, I'm a bit of a fish. If your doing ROTC then you should be well off when you finally join.
@The2007Marine ANY MAN CAN KILL.......BUT A REAL MAN WILL SAVE EVEN WHEN HE HAS NOTHING LEFT. ASK YOUR COMMANDING OFFICER ABOUT THE BATTLE OF GUAM AND WHO SAVED YOU.
@greysparctice Don't do that. Ignore them. People like this do not know the constitution. Yes they are military and are the Armed Forces. Do not pay him or her any attention. All branches are known for different things. Some people get a since of cockiness but do not entertain that foolishness. To hell with them. It isn't even up to them where they life will end up.
My two best days in the USCG. Graduation day from boot camp, and the day my enlistment ended and I got out.
Watching these videos gets me really excited to be a part of the USCG. Leaving in a month, so I'm really nervous. But I want to be a rescue swimmer more than anything I've ever wanted out of life, and my state championship swimming background really gives me the fire and ambition, and it really feels within my grasp.

I would say if you want to enlist with the least amount of stress and physical friction.........The Air Force.

Thank you Billy Ray. I served from 1986-2007 in the Coast Guard. There is no feeling like serving our great country in the military.

Great video series. I went thru Cape May in 1976. Lima-96. Still have very found memories. That first nite at Cape May was a real trip.

man watchin thiz made me scared and anxious cant wait to get my own experience in the CSCG

Well done !
Damn, I love my Navy, but i think I might re-enlist in the Coast Guard
i like this video . my cousin graduating from the cost guard boot camp. God Bless him.
@Opqosite GOOD LUCK AND CONGRATULATIONS......THAT'S A BLESSING.
1:28-1:35...........................that is the most important thing you will ever get from the Guard...and it will stay with you forever. ......coastie 1975.
Good luck!
Just by watching the movie of them graducate I feel so proud.
I am sooo happy i am out of the Navy. Now I am looking at CG reserves

it doesnt look hard but just like every other branch, its all a mind game. if u know in your mind you can do it, you can do it
@ShaunHemp no the coast guard will not take you if you are a current asthmatic, no branch will
do it mrkovak.....its kinda cool....boot camp aint as bad as this video makes it out to be...its actually quite fun....yes you can go in as a reservist then switch later on but dont do it that way its a pain in the ass withe the paperwork....im active duty and just a month outta basic...im lovin it....youre gonna hate it for the first week or so but then you get used to it....do it but be prepared for a challenge cuz its no easy task....just remember dude...NEVER LOOK THE CC'S IN THE EYES!!!!!!!
@greysparctice I have the same exact feeling you do. Im going in, in october
I'm watching these vids to gear up for Scuba Instructor school =)
that voice at the end gave me nightmares
I am prior Navy and now want to join the USCG reserves, I hope I make the right decision. I don't want to be miserable in the CG like I was in the Navy.

Thank you very much! I wish the best to you as well! We should give it every thing we have! I'll be looking for you there!
Cheerfultitanic1 are you going to college?? Cause I am.
I'm going to the United States Coast Guard Academy, which is a college.
+Cheerfultitanic1 if you get in
@tharr61 actually they are apart of the department of home land secerity if you are going to criticize learn the facts
@Mycrappygreenguitar this time next year because im near getting my A.A in Administration of justice
Tbh I think the hardest thing for me would be the seramonial rifle throwing stuff. Does everyone have to do that?
@singitconnolly15 just fyi the CC(company commanders) and the DS(drill sergents) are just as rough on the females as the males, and theres no platoon or company of just females
i always wanted to join the coast guard
@silvertonebass1 hey what are some good tips for a newcomer im highly debating over and over in my head about joining. I want to make the USCG my career not just 4-5 years service. Is that possible??
Anyone have any tips for Boarding Team Training?
@rev6605 Amen.
So you're saying you liked it a lot and want to go back? Or had nothing when you got out and want/need to go back now?
@wantd22 why nvm?

@greysparctice So what are you doing to get ready, for that 8 week vacation from hell?
That looks like hell
ASK YOUR COMMANDING OFFICER ABOUT THE BATTLE OF GUAM AND WHO SAVED YOU.
they should do something with these videos cause they look way old. still, congrats to anyone joining the military, its a great lifestyle
Instead of feeling up jails with people that commited petty crimes send them there, give them a chance to become somebody.
Watch this then watch marine drill instructors , lol big difference
Not that big of a difference...
