A music video of the Coast Guard Deployable Operations Group's Assessment and Selection proving week. Video edited by PA1 Adam Eggers, Pentagon Channel News
The Coast Guard has played a part in every war the US was in. Plus we were the first branch to capture Nazis in WWII during an inspection of a radios station in Norway
I got to be honest, my friend served in the USCG DOG. They do combat, a lot. USCG can be a lot like the Navy, deploying to places like Afighanistan, etc. It just depends on what DOG unit you are, for example the Maritime Security Response Team Unit is the most prestigious, responding to counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, high risk boardings, search and rescue, war etc. from sea, air or land. Other units, such as Tactical Law Enforcement Teams, or TACLET, usually does high risk drug raids in their specific stations. Overall, every unit in the CG, other than being a Rescue Swimmer (for S&R) is involved in combat, this includes ship inspections, raids, counter-terrorism, war, rescues, hostage rescues, etc. If you want to learn more, visit this wikipedia page I once helped write: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deployable_Operations_Group
I was though, in-fact surprised to learn that the most elite unit, the MSRT is more domestic, and rarely visit places such as the Middle East. If you're looking for overseas work you might be looking to join TACLET. MSRT does not go overseas on land, but does operate in other continents or areas.
Coast Guard can get called to assist seals or need them to be able to do something legally they can but not the navy i.e to board a ship without it being a declaration of war, abilities that they are experts in, train locals etc ( I know the comment is 2 months old but figured it would be good for ya to know if you don't)
The two sides of the Coast Guard, those who take the job seriously, and those who HATE the serious professionals. Looks like the USCG is getting serious.
I am not in the Military yet, but I would like to go through some of these training programs to get better and see what my limits are. I know that these kind of things would kick the shit out of me, but it would make me stronger mentally and physically.
anyone know the difference between all the operations in the uscg? im still confused by all of it like operations afloat and i think this deployable operations i assume is one of them and then theres like general support. whats the difference between all of them?
@ThaBR33D It's not any one rating. The DoG takes all rates. Naturally, most of the people will be ME rates, but I'm a GM in the DoG, and my unit has everyone including DC's, MK's, YN's, SK's, everything.
@24Daveed im currently a nonrate and i'm torn between ME and GM..whats the likelihood of getting a getting a tactical based unit rather than military police?
@nirvanadropkicks I was on a 378 off San Diego and did some LE training but if you have any training or non at all, it doesn't really matter, you'll learn everything you need to know when you go to a DOG. I'm currently attending ME A-School and waited 2 years for it. But it is well worth the time I waited. The training at A-School is amazing and I'm getting orders to a TACLET. your best bet would be to wait for A-School and you'll most likely get orders to a DOG after A-School.
The rate is not officially out, but they are taking recruits and active members into their schools which will be starting within the next 2 months. And I'd really hope a recruiter could tell you more about the rate, if he can't on the spot, ask him to do some research on it for you. I'll also look more into it as well. And yes it would be a good idea to talk to a recruiter now even if you aren't planing on joining soon, because the waiting list can be up to a year just to join.
Most definitely. Most former coasties get out and do some sort of Law Enforcement. Any sort of law enforcement background would give you a step up. Along with a college degree (which you can obtain while in the coast guard for free using the MGI bill). Its funny you ask because i'm an active duty member of the coast guard and i'm looking to get out and become a state trooper in california. A lot of people say Law Enforcement is the future of the coast guard.
A degree is really only beneficial if you're trying to join and get into OCS "Officer Candidate School". Which you could complete in four years, then become an active member of the coast guard as an Officer. With a criminal justice background it could give you a real heads up in the law enforcement aspect of the coast guard, and could put you in some bad ass jobs as an officer. Like teaching vertical entry from our Helo's.
I was kind of in the same situation that you were in. I was SO close to joining the marines, and i didn't. I went with the coast guard. (not saying anything against the marines, how could anyone?) HUH!
But if you're just looking to join the Coast Guard, you could attempt to get a guaranteed "A school" for our new rate "Maritime Law Enforcement". You would come out of A school a Third Class. And having a criminal justice degree could boost your chances of obtaining that guaranteed A school. The job looks pretty bad ass. You can also become a boarding officer in almost any rate. Right now I'm just doing Search and Rescue off the west coast at a Surf Station, and some light law enforcement.
@thankgodyourehere I'm shipping June 19 mine u pumped or what? Haha I say that now but that bus ride from Philly will most likely make me piss myself hearing the cc tell me 10 seconds to GE off this bus and you've just wasted 3
+Jim-Paul Adams PT is usually fun for Coast Guardsman they hardly get a chance to do it, because they have to maintain all the stuff in the engine rooms and paint the decks and maintain all the firefighting and life saving equipment; all that stuff usually takes 12 hours, 6 to 7 days a week. If they are not doing that stuff they are operating in other countries waters or in the homeland. Getting the body of a male model or a body builder is great, but some times you have to do real work.
Do real work? you are comparing the Coast Guard to the Marine Corps. I mentioned that the type of P T they show in this video seems pretty easy for a candidate trying out for a specialized team. It seems that the selection and assessment for this is real easy
@jasminels94 really?!??!! maaaan i loving the USCG more & more...i wanted pararescue in the AF, but the job isnt offered to women...made me pissed, i wud soo kill for that job ahaha...

Actually you might want to look into Port Security units if you are looking to go overseas, they rarely operate domestically.
i mean if you think about it, why would MSRT be doing in afghanistan in the first place anyway? The coast guard has no business on another continent

we didn't have this stuff when I was in... then again, we still had steam powered ships then...
and I was a snipe in the cape may motorpool.
COAST GUARD DEPLOYABLE OPERATIONS GROUP DOG So AWESOME!!!

How exactly can I apply for D.O.G after joining the Coast Guard?
anyone know the difference between all the operations in the uscg? im still confused by all of it like operations afloat and i think this deployable operations i assume is one of them and then theres like general support. whats the difference between all of them?
depending on when you join. the coast guard is coming out with a new rate called "ME" maritime law enforcement, which would be the ideal route.
@ThaBR33D

My camp date is Oct 16. See ya'll there!

Do you know if I MSST has reservist slots? Or is it active duty personnel only?
This doesn't look as bad as any of the training that goes on for BUD/S, PJ, CCT etc. etc.

@scoobysdeathwish756 where did u hear that? im planning on enlisting after my last semester in college next fall
So, what do i expect if i want to join the DOG? Also, how do get into them out of basic?
Do PSU personnel get to come here? and if so do reservists get to as well?
This is a special operations facility. So I doubt reservists go. But hey, you never know... ;)
the uscg lets women do the same things as men no matter what training and or rateing. its why ill be joining when i turn 17 :D
this reminds me of my basic and AIT training
I was kind of in the same situation that you were in. I was SO close to joining the marines, and i didn't. I went with the coast guard. (not saying anything against the marines, how could anyone?) HUH!
Hard Work but worth it !! Semper P Baby
How does one become a part of the Deployable Operations Group?
Wow, I had no idea DOG had its own rigorous training regime
Does anyone one know how one gets into this?
To get in you first have to join the cg then get reffered to the DOG

@scoobysdeathwish756 luckyyy you...i wanted to enlist in the navy for corpsman, but no openings...
First step is to contact a Coast Guard recruiter ;)
*says the guy in the Navy*
@jasminels94 So you already have a high school diploma at 16?
California has to "state troopers" my friend. The CHP uses "officer"
