    @sable2100 actually there are 3 active female rescue swimmers in the CG and 1 more may have just graduated from the school recently but not certain. 2 more that are no longer in were female swimmers also

    That's my dad about 17 years ago, PO3 Hannah. He is now about to retire from the Coast Guard. He is currently stationed at HITRON in Jacksonville Florida.

    • @littleShepherd1
      @littleShepherd1 7 років тому

      Awesome! Was he still doing rescue in HITRON? I'd read that HITRON was mostly confrontation based, and focused on shooting out engines and boarding. Also, what do senior enlisted AST's do?

    This inspires me quite a lot. I'm leaving for USCG basic in a month and I'm very pumped watching videos like this on this channel, this is what I want to do with my life.
    I don't care how hard it is to make it, I'm up for it, and I'm going to make it! If I can win two 5A swimming state championships, I can do this. Hope to see you other prospects there!

    Just to remind everyone...The Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer program was patterned after the Navy's. In fact, they went thru Navy training until they stood up their own schoolhoouse

    Only enlisted can be rescue swimmers. And there is a 2 year wait once you are in the Coast Guard.

  • @Dliciousization
    @Dliciousization 12 років тому +3

    Trust me I know, a lot of my training (especially as a long distance specialist in my competitive swimming career) involved swimming for thousands of yards at a time, and I have a lot of experience in swimming in tough currents and rough waters through my SCUBA training for certification (of which I still actively use :D).
    I'm definitely nervous as this is my most ambitious goal I've ever made for myself, but I'm definitely confident that my past will help me and that I can make it.

    The Coast Guard and Navy Rescuse schools use the same principals and tasks... After-all the USCG Rescue school was mirrored after the Navy's. I leave for the USCG in a month and will try my hardest to be a USCG AST. Whichever rescue school you get in to.. It's a great honor and accomplishment to say you're a part of the program.

    Im going into Navy Aviation Rescue Swimmer. As for as the ASVAB goes, im not sure what line score, but they say at least a 60 on the AFQT is necessary to join, so you should probably score pretty high. But as far as the Navy program goes there is no waiting list because theres a high demand for AIRRs. They say as long as you meet minimum PT scores they should grab you for the job, unlike Navy SEALs (who have to go above and beyond the minimum).

    I am a high schooler in NJROTC and we do a lot of running, push ups, and sit ups. I am also on the swim team as well, i took first in the 500 yard freestyle. I can't wait to be a rescue swimmer. "SO OTHERS MAY LIVE"

  • @dmect2207
    @dmect2207 14 років тому

    Won't matter as EMT is not done until after AST school. You all go ahead and take all the junk you want, there have been over 5,000 that have tried to be rescue swimmers and when my son graduated 2 1/2 years ago he was number 348. If you really want to see if your fit enough to even try this school then first take the Red Cross' Ocean Life Guard Course. It is a rewarding job, but comes with a serious responsibility. Someone's life.

    I have deep respect for the CG rescue swimmers, out of 30,000 staff and members the CG has only 300 of which have the job of being a rescue swimmer. The coast guard is the toughest branch to become a part of, for any of those who wish to become one i have to say just be dedicated, and strong physically, emotionally, and mentally.

    To answer Zachary's question, only enlisted personnel become rescue swimmers. Officers aren't expected to do anything so dangerous. In fact, CG aviator officers don't really do much of anything that resembles work, except fly the aircraft and push paper. Officers aren't all that bright either.. I was a CG helo rescue aircrewman in the '70s... once flew with a pilot (a Commander) who placed his navigation dividers on the shelf over the instrument panel in the helo. The helo hit some turbulence, causing the dividers to jump off the dash and stab him in the balls. True story. He ended up being the rescue of the day. Come to think of it, officers ARE dangerous... to themselves! :)
