I've heard it said, "If you want to see the world, join the navy .... but if you want to learn to be a real sailor, join the Coast Guard" - as a 20 year navy vet, I believe that is true.
The only thing the Navy did for me was make me lose my hearing. It gave me depression, ptsd and anxiety. And kept me in CT for 4 year on a joke of a command.
Honestly it looks like they mixed footage from Cape May with the Academy. I saw some stuff that looked familiar from Cape May and stuff that I had never seen before. Def not all Cape May though...
My Dad finished in 1945, Boot Camp was somewhere in Louisiana. They didn’t carry around water everywhere, either! Of course, maybe they should have? He always told about how often men passed out! He’d bust chops of those who keeled over, until it happened to him! He shipped to the Pacific to prepare for the land invasion of Japan. The Enola Gay and Bockscar got there first, so he went to Guam, then Japan. He rarely spoke of his time in Japan, and later, Korea and later, the Pacific. He told us more about Boot Camp and later, when stationed at Lakehurst. Most of it was classified which was as well because he didn’t want to speak of it. Tomorrow is the one year anniversary of his passing. Miss you, Dad! (edit due to autocorrect changing Enola to Ebola!)
I went to the Coast Guard recruiter. They weren't hiring. But the Marine Corps Recruiter next door was lurking and watching... Like a villain in those old movies. 🤣 Graduated Devil Dog Recruit Training later that year at Paris Island. Semper Fi!!

What’s it like? Sleeping in late, 5 star food all 3 meals, weekends off. The only ones that have it difficult are the rescue swimmers. Those are sailors that 90% of other coasters would wash out on their first day. 😂😂 hey, I’m an army veteran and just bustin their balls. I really respect anyone willing to raise their right hand and don the uniform. ❤️🇺🇸
I went more than 15 years ago, but we woke up at 5am, the food was good, never had a weekend off but we got 4 hours of dinvine hours on Sunday. When I was in the Coast Guard still allowed stuff in bootcamp that none of the other branches allowed, water drills, making it rain inside, stuff that had people passing out left and right. We use to be the second hardest bootcamp behind the marines, and the hardest mentally. It seems very different then I remember it though, so I'm not sure what its like now.
I remember "sleeping in late". The CC did not like the fact someone did not immediately roll out their top rack at 3 am upon his entry. He ordered two boots to unceremoniously roll him out onto the floor. The chow was good - even Alaskan king crab a number of times at training center Yorktown. When the mess budget at my small boat station went low though - they put out the smelt net.
Arrival on the bus looked lame. In 1985 when our bus pulled in we didn't have officer cadets greet us. We had an old, rough looking enlisted guy come on the bus and shout out in a clear voice we had 30 seconds to grab our gear and stand on a yellow square. Afterwards they marched us off to a room with large desks to sit at. In the front of the room they had a contraband box. It was our only opportunity to dump off any drugs or crap we had without getting busted. It was funny watching people run up to the box getting rid of their shit...
my dad was in the coast guard during ww2. he went through boot camp in Maryland. he was a gunner on a troop transport ship.during ww2 members of the coast guard went automatically into the US NAVY he was on the USS ADMIRAL MAYO. he saw action in the Atlantic ( brought back the 101st airborne on our trip, brought back GI prisoners of the germans on the second trip.. made two trips to Japan ...brought back American prisoners of war that had been held by the Japanese.)he was proud of his service. during the Vietnam war, I wanted to go onto the service, he said he would give me 500$ for every year I served if I went into the coast guard. I joined the Marines. both he and my mom cried like babies, he said if I made it through the first 2 months ,I'd be ok. said that's what my grandfather told him when he left for Europe theatre. he came home with out a scratch.... I did my tour up in the "I corps" , saw a lot of action...never got a scratch . my dad passed 16 years ago. to this day...every Memorial Day I put-up the Coast Guard flag and the Marine Corps flag side by side. I know that my training was a lot harder than what he went through.... but branch to branch ANY ONE who serves our country is just as "tough" no matter which branch they serve(d) in.
I leave on September 17th. I thought they did the running PT before testing for pushups and situps. I'm guessing it's after? Based on the second half of the video.
He should be very comfortable in the water and practice swimming long distance. Failing the swim test is the main reason guys in my company were reverted or tossed. It can get real rough out there - if he is too starry eyed have him read "10 hours until dawn".
There seems to be a bunch of commenters here cracking jokes and making fun of Coasties but I would like to know how many of them have even emerged from their parents basements? There are more Marines and army that spent their whole careers, be it four or 20 years just playing war. The Coast Guard actually uses their training for saving lives and property. They are under the department of navy during war time. They where in Vietnam and are currently in the middle east in the gulf. Basic looks a lot different than it did in the early 70's but it isn't day camp as some would lead on to be. The Coast Guard says you have to go out but you don't have to come back but I suppose that is the same in every branch. What gets me is the boots get to wear real fitting cloths! We had a one size fits all green army duds that if you weren't 6' plus you where swallowed up by them. It wouldn't surprise me if they where from WWII and no telling how many men wore them previously. We did have our dress uniform issue but only wore them for inspection and everything else was issued just prior to graduation. If God sent me back for a do over I would join the USCG again. The statement during orientation of leaving your personal pronouns behind gives me a little hope.
I did Army BCT. However my brother did the Coast Guard (we're talking the 1970s). He told me of the time in Bootcamp where a Chief pulled him out of the barracks and started chewing his ass. At one point the Chief asked him where he was from, and my brother replied, "Wyoming." He said the Chief looked surprised and never singled him out again. Go figure.

"Personal pronouns go out the the door!" That's the most promising thing I've heard so far in most modern bootcamp videos.
That’s the way it’s always been.
I wish it was said more often tbh. Personal pronouns should always go out the door.
