He was actually adjusting one of the knobs on his pedals. The tone wasn't quite right for him. Another fun fact, Stevie was legendary for his strong hands. You'll see he has his eyes closed about 90% of the time if not more. He used 13 gauge strings which are some of the thickest and are difficult to bend but he would still break strings.
Yep. . I normally play 9 gauge strings and occasionally 10 gauge. . SRV used to do those HUGE two whole tone string bends on 13's!! That's like bending concrete rebar with your fingers!!
The legendary Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamer pedal. Also his brother Jimmy Vaughan is still alive and is an equally impressive Blues player. Though I bet his lessons are crazy expensive.
He liked playing in small bars where he might not be recognized. One night playing the calluses on his fingers came off and his fingers were bleeding, he super glued them back on and went back out and kept playing. That's love of music.
Yes, I watched him live and talk to him. He was a man that loves at what do. He loves the blues. He had hart and soul in his music. He died the year I graduated high school 1990. The first guitar was given to him by his brother was named "Jimbo" a 1951 Fender "Nocaster". The SRV guitar is named "Number One". His brother has the guitar now. His brothers name is Jimmie. RIP Stevie Ray Vaughan. A brother love is for life.

Same here, couldn't believe how foggy it was. it took 2 1/2 hrs to get there, 7 hrs to get home. We had to stop the car and walk up to the signs to see if it was our exit. Why anyone tryed to fly is beyond me.

You are in my opinion, o e of the greatest, if not the greatest guitarist of all time. That guitar from that video is in a museum in a glass casing, along with all his memorabilia. PRINCE was Fantastic- STEVIE RAY was Remarkable. 9:35-40 is some serious Voodoo sound, and Stevie is the Witch Doctor. Whenever I see the image of that iconic black hat overshadowing that famous face, I get chills. 11:50-12:00. RIP, King SRV.
I went to one of his concerts and I just stood there and cried like a baby through the whole concert. It was like I was in the presence of god. The video doesn’t do it justice. Being there in person was unbelievable. Best concert I’ve ever been to in my life. I quit going to concerts after that night cause I knew I would never see another one as good as this. Unbelievable !!! I know he dropped his pick once and picked it up without missing a beat.

He used the heaviest gauge strings available, designed to not break, but he broke them on a regular basis. You can see him bending the s...t out of them on the close ups.
At the end of the song when he switched style, he was playing to his idol, Jimi Hendrix, in Jimi's style of play. A lot of people debate who was better. SRV would have despised that. He loved and was probably Jimi's biggest fan.
I agree Stevie would be appalled to be compared to Jimi as being better. He certainty was as good and had much better pedals and equipment plus had Jimi as an example of where to go with his sound which owes more to a number of blues masters than to Jimi. For me one is not better than the other they are both next level.

@@larryg7126 I agree. There are so many excellent musicians/guitarists out there. Some of my favorites are SRV, Hendrix, Page, Slash, Angus, B.B., Santana, Eddie Van Halen, just to name a few. I enjoy every one of them and couldn't possibly rank them. I dont see how anyone could.
@@larryg7126 I do think what made this particular performance by SRV so great was that he played the end of the song in honor of Hendrix. Its rare that you see legendary musicians play in tribute to each other. When it happens, there is something magical and so very emotional that happens. To me, anyway.
SRV was not only about his playing but also his guitar setup with crazy thick strings and his amazing guitar TONE.... one of a kind..... simply amazing. Died in helicopter crash on tour with Eric Clapton who was in the other helicopter that made it ok.
I have a long list of favorite guitarists, and at the top (of the list) is Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. I had many chances to see him perform live, but unfortunately put it off and then it was too late. I've heard that he was a very humble man, never bragging about his talent and always giving credit to the great blues musicians who he learned from. R.I.P. Stevie

SRV is the GOAT. So amazing to watch. He never played Voodoo Chile the same way twice. This is my all-time fave, lightning fast version. I think he was sober during this time after getting treatment. Another legend gone too soon. RIP
I saw him play twice back in the day in Illinois Ill never forget it, noone sat down for almost two hours. It was like watching a God play guitar. I got the news at work when he died, we were stunned for about five minutes. Stevies the best blues/soul player ive ever seen.

Hey guys i was a stage hand at the capitol theater in Passaic N.J when Stevie Ray played. i was like 15 feet away on the side of the stage while he played. actually meet him during sound check and after the show. Adjusting his tone, I'm so happy you guys have experienced SRV, once I heard SRV for the first time, I've been a fan since... Prince was bad, but SRV was a virtuoso, the GOAT.. He kept Jimi's sound and still added his own, that's super hard to do at the same time when covering someone else song.

I see where a few people say he bends down to adjust the knobs on his foot pedals to tweak the guitar tone, but that's what the foot pedal itself is for. When he's bending down it's to quickly grab himself a new guitar pick as he had just broken the one he was using. Right there on the floor in front of him is a little rack holding a boatload of them as he breaks so many throughout each song and show. Great reaction, I was fortunate enough myself to see him live two weeks before his fateful helicopter crash.... I'll never forget that show...
I grew up in Austin & Stevie was Austin. As a child he would listen to the black delta blues & Chicago blues guitarists & play note for note & the made it his own. He heard Hendrix & he became his idol. In this performance he had got clean from drugs & found God, then died in the heli accident. He used to get so coked up, sometimes he had to be helped to the stage, but when they put his guitar in his hands he would play like he was sober & channel Hendrix through his fingers.
I use to see Stevie at the Rome Inn in Austin Texas back in 1975 and 1976 he had a band called The Triple Threat Revue with Lou Ann Barton and W C Clark, cover charge was $3.00 , man he was always great ,RIP Stevie , guys you should do a video on Freddie King a blues guitarist that influenced Clapton, Stevie, and countless others , he was called The Texas Cannonball, and died young 45 or so of a heart attack , love your show
I was blessed to see him a few times & had tix to see his next performance here in Phx, a month or so before he died in that helicopter crash. 😭😠 He was set to play at the AZ State Fair. We, instead, had a kegger party in his honor, blaring his music all night. He was taken from us too soon! ❤️

Most guitarists make faces or move their heads weirdly while they play. It lets all the tension, while playing,, to come out from somewhere other than their hands. There are many funny faces and head movements to be seen.
To say Stevie is talented is a colossal understatement. Stevie was one of those rare, once in a generation, supremely gifted people that were born to do what they do. Stevie idolized the great blues players of his time and those that came before him. Whenever he would play with the likes of B.B. King, Albert King and, Johnny Copeland and the rest he always showed them the greatest respect and admiration. Stevie was a very humble person. He received the highest honor, praise and respect from the best blues players of his era during his time on earth. Stevie was heavily influenced by Jimmy Hendrix and all of the greatest black blues players during his time, but his greatest influence and mentor was Albert King. Stevie idolized Albert. He would spend as much time with Albert as he could so that he could learn how to play like Albert. Rock guitar legend, Eric Clapton was so impressed by Stevie’s talent that when he was scheduled to play after Stevie during a blues concert Eric, refused to go on. When asked why he wouldn’t go on, Eric said, “How do you follow that?” Eric said, “I have never seen a man more at one with his ax than Stevie Ray Vaughn is. Stevie received high praise from B.B. King, Albert Collins, Howlin’ Wolf and so many other great blues players. It was at the time of Stevie’s death that he was finally receiving the national recognition that he deserved. Two weeks before Stevie died in that helicopter crash my brother saw Stevie at a blues concert that had Joe Cocker head lining with Stevie and Double Trouble backing him up. My brother didn’t know who Stevie was before the concert and when he described his concert experience to me he said Joe was good, but Stevie Ray Vaughn blew him and the rest of the crowd away.
I saw him play live 3 times....each time was like a religious experience....when he played the fabric of time and space bent towards him and you could not look away....sweet and humble off stage....a God onstage....Eric Clapton said he was the greatest blues guitarist he'd ever seen....and he played with Jimi....he is still missed.....once in a century kind of genius....they should blast his music out into space so the aliens know we're cool....RIP SRV....
Lucky enough to see him before he died. Was in a gym at Northeastern University and they had those folded seats on the floor of the gym. By the end of the 1st song, all the seats were stacked against the walls and everybody was dancing their asses off. Was awesome ! Good stuff guys !

Watching this musical genius, made me think of all the computerized music we have today & how fewer kids are playing instruments. Makes me worried for the future of music! At this rate, a day will come where instruments will be a thing of the past & there's nothing like watching a musician play an instrument like it's an extension of their body & soul! I love that you have discovered SRV. And I love your reactions. He’s my favourite artist ever. I discovered him back in 1983 and have loved him ever since. I was absolutely blessed to see him live in 1985. I spent the last money I had on a ticket and it was the best thing decision I ever made. It was friggin amazing. Watch Little sister to see her amazing skills that puts in in a league of his our. Little Wing at El macambo. Also you must watch Life without you. Prince is an amazing guitarist, songwriter and performer. But, as far as guitar playing alone, I agree, Stevie’s got him beat. For me Stevie and Jimi are in a class all by themselves. No disrespect to Prince, Clapton, Gibbons, Page, May or any of the other legends, but I think they’d even agree.
John Perry no Prince isn’t an amazing guitarist. He could play, but he couldn’t land on the root note, on the beat, to save his life. His solo, the one everyone talks about, his Rock n roll hall of fame solo was absolute trash. Didn’t follow the rhythm or the music at all. It was just about him trying to show off, and all he showed was his Ass. Great songwriter? Matter of opinion. Mediocre guitar player... I’d say it’s observable. Just my take.
I don't think what Stevie does can be taught. You can get lessons and get real good with dedication and practice, but Stevie had something else extra. The confidence, he attacks the guitar.

He was at Alpine Valley...East Troy, WI...performed, then copter struck one of the ski hills midflight while leaving late at night from the concert area. Was a very foggy night and pilot missed his route. Lived a couple miles from Alpine Valley ski resort. A vast area used as a venue for big-name talent concerts in the off season. Drew 20,00-40,00 attendees.
I saw SRV in a lil pub In Virginia Beach. Only 150 peeps there. Then I went to 9 more of his shows. He died same day as my grandmother and me and my brother cried a lot that day. He was the best!
I was lucky enough to have seen SRV play just one month before he died in 1990 - one of the best shows I ever saw. What made it doubly tragic was that he was newly clean and sober and was playing at the top of his game (as you observed). He was so grateful to be alive and made a point of letting the audience know. If you want to get a taste of another side of Stevie, I highly recommend this emotional track (Riviera Paradise) from the same show you just watched (Austin City Limits 1989). @@larryg7126 I agree. There are so many excellent musicians/guitarists out there. Some of my favorites are SRV, Hendrix, Page, Slash, Angus, B.B., Santana, Eddie Van Halen, just to name a few. I enjoy every one of them and couldn't possibly rank them. I dont see how anyone could.
@@larryg7126 I do think what made this particular performance by SRV so great was that he played the end of the song in honor of Hendrix. Its rare that you see legendary musicians play in tribute to each other. When it happens, there is something magical and so very emotional that happens. To me, anyway.
SRV was not only about his playing but also his guitar setup with crazy thick strings and his amazing guitar TONE.... one of a kind..... simply amazing. Died in helicopter crash on tour with Eric Clapton who was in the other helicopter that made it ok.
His band, "Double Trouble" played right with him so give them credit too.
I have a long list of favorite guitarists, and at the top (of the list) is Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. I had many chances to see him perform live, but unfortunately put it off and then it was too late. I've heard that he was a very humble man, never bragging about his talent and always giving credit to the great blues musicians who he learned from. R.I.P. Stevie

SRV is the GOAT. So amazing to watch. He never played Voodoo Chile the same way twice. This is my all-time fave, lightning fast version. I think he was sober during this time after getting treatment. Another legend gone too soon. RIP
I saw him play twice back in the day in Illinois Ill never forget it, noone sat down for almost two hours. It was like watching a God play guitar. I got the news at work when he died, we were stunned for about five minutes. Stevies the best blues/soul player ive ever seen.

Thanks for sharing one of my faves. Had to pull my car over to grieve when I heard the news of his passing back in the radio days. Note the other comments about fiddling with his pedal settings when he kneels down. You can see his pedal box in a few shots that are not so close up to him. Thanks again! Love u guys.

Hey guys i was a stage hand at the capitol theater in Passaic N.J when Stevie Ray played. i was like 15 feet away on the side of the stage while he played. actually meet him during sound check and after the show. Adjusting his tone, I'm so happy you guys have experienced SRV, once I heard SRV for the first time, I've been a fan since... Prince was bad, but SRV was a virtuoso, the GOAT.. He kept Jimi's sound and still added his own, that's super hard to do at the same time when covering someone else song.

I see where a few people say he bends down to adjust the knobs on his foot pedals to tweak the guitar tone, but that's what the foot pedal itself is for. When he's bending down it's to quickly grab himself a new guitar pick as he had just broken the one he was using. Right there on the floor in front of him is a little rack holding a boatload of them as he breaks so many throughout each song and show. Great reaction, I was fortunate enough myself to see him live two weeks before his fateful helicopter crash.... I'll never forget that show...

I grew up in Austin & Stevie was Austin. As a child he would listen to the black delta blues & Chicago blues guitarists & play note for note & the made it his own. He heard Hendrix & he became his idol. In this performance he had got clean from drugs & found God, then died in the heli accident. He used to get so coked up, sometimes he had to be helped to the stage, but when they put his guitar in his hands he would play like he was sober & channel Hendrix through his fingers.

I use to see Stevie at the Rome Inn in Austin Texas back in 1975 and 1976 he had a band called The Triple Threat Revue with Lou Ann Barton and W C Clark, cover charge was $3.00 , man he was always great ,RIP Stevie , guys you should do a video on Freddie King a blues guitarist that influenced Clapton, Stevie, and countless others , he was called The Texas Cannonball, and died young 45 or so of a heart attack , love your show
I was blessed to see him a few times & had tix to see his next performance here in Phx, a month or so before he died in that helicopter crash. 😭😠 He was set to play at the AZ State Fair. We, instead, had a kegger party in his honor, blaring his music all night. He was taken from us too soon! ❤️

Most guitarists make faces or move their heads weirdly while they play. It lets all the tension, while playing,, to come out from somewhere other than their hands. There are many funny faces and head movements to be seen.

To say Stevie is talented is a colossal understatement. Stevie was one of those rare, once in a generation, supremely gifted people that were born to do what they do. Stevie idolized the great blues players of his time and those that came before him. Whenever he would play with the likes of B.B. King, Albert King and, Johnny Copeland and the rest he always showed them the greatest respect and admiration. Stevie was a very humble person. He received the highest honor, praise and respect from the best blues players of his era during his time on earth.
Stevie was heavily influenced by Jimmy Hendrix and all of the greatest black blues players during his time, but his greatest influence and mentor was Albert King. Stevie idolized Albert. He would spend as much time with Albert as he could so that he could learn how to play like Albert.
Rock guitar legend, Eric Clapton was so impressed by Stevie’s talent that when he was scheduled to play after Stevie during a blues concert Eric, refused to go on. When asked why he wouldn’t go on, Eric said, “How do you follow that?” Eric said, “I have never seen a man more at one with his ax than Stevie Ray Vaughn is. Stevie received high praise from B.B. King, Albert Collins, Howlin’ Wolf and so many other great blues players. It was at the time of Stevie’s death that he was finally receiving the national recognition that he deserved.
Two weeks before Stevie died in that helicopter crash my brother saw Stevie at a blues concert that had Joe Cocker head lining with Stevie and Double Trouble backing him up. My brother didn’t know who Stevie was before the concert and when he described his concert experience to me he said Joe was good, but Stevie Ray Vaughn blew him and the rest of the crowd away.
I saw him play live 3 times....each time was like a religious experience....when he played the fabric of time and space bent towards him and you could not look away....sweet and humble off stage....a God onstage....Eric Clapton said he was the greatest blues guitarist he'd ever seen....and he played with Jimi....he is still missed.....once in a century kind of genius....they should blast his music out into space so the aliens know we're cool....RIP SRV....

Lucky enough to see him before he died. Was in a gym at Northeastern University and they had those folded seats on the floor of the gym. By the end of the 1st song, all the seats were stacked against the walls and everybody was dancing their asses off. Was awesome !

Great reaction guys! Stevie was a true class act. He could have recorded Voodoo Child without permission, but he actually visited Jimi Hendrix’s father to ask. If you want to see the true soul of the man, both musically and personally, check out Life Without You recorded at the Capital Theater. Amazing.
Watching this musical genius, made me think of all the computerized music we have today & how fewer kids are playing instruments. Makes me worried for the future of music! At this rate, a day will come where instruments will be a thing of the past & there's nothing like watching a musician play an instrument like it's an extension of their body & soul! We gotta keep encouraging the youth of today & tomorrow to play instruments!

I was absolutely blessed to see him live in 1985. I spent the last money I had on a ticket and it was the best thing decision I ever made. It was friggin amazing. Exactly, and I am a HUGE prince fan and while prince is actually a very underrated guitarist and was one of the best.... SRV is in a tier by himself.
Prince is an amazing guitarist, songwriter and performer. But, as far as guitar playing alone, I agree, Stevie’s got him beat. For me Stevie and Jimi are in a class all by themselves. No disrespect to Prince, Clapton, Gibbons, Page, May or any of the other legends, but I think they’d even agree.
John Perry no Prince isn’t an amazing guitarist. He could play, but he couldn’t land on the root note, on the beat, to save his life. His solo, the one everyone talks about, his Rock n roll hall of fame solo was absolute trash. Didn’t follow the rhythm or the music at all. It was just about him trying to show off, and all he showed was his Ass. Great songwriter? Matter of opinion. Mediocre guitar player... I’d say it’s observable. Just my take.

I don't think what Stevie does can be taught. You can get lessons and get real good with dedication and practice, but Stevie had something else extra. The confidence, he attacks the guitar.

He was at Alpine Valley...East Troy, WI...performed, then copter struck one of the ski hills midflight while leaving late at night from the concert area. Was a very foggy night and pilot missed his route. Lived a couple miles from Alpine Valley ski resort. A vast area used as a venue for big-name talent concerts in the off season. Drew 20,00-40,00

I saw SRV in a lil pub In Virginia Beach. Only 150 peeps there. Then I went to 9 more of his shows. He died same day as my grandmother and me and my brother cried a lot that day. He was the best!

I was lucky enough to have seen SRV play just one month before he died in 1990 - one of the best shows I ever saw. What made it doubly tragic was that he was newly clean and sober and was playing at the top of his game (as you observed). He was so grateful to be alive and made a point of letting the audience know. If you want to get a taste of another side of Stevie, I highly recommend this emotional track (Riviera Paradise) from the same show you just watched (Austin City Limits 1989). Stevie Ray Vaughan died in a helicopter crash over East Troy, Wisconsin on August 27, 1990 at age 35. He is buried at Laurel Land Memorial Park which is located in Dallas, Texas. He was and still is a legend, Rest In Peace SRV!!!
