This Austin City Limits performance was the first Stevie DVD that I bought and of course I was blown away....BUT, when I got the "El Mocambo" DVD and heard that "Voodoo Child" performance, I was further BLOWN AWAY!!!! That whole DVD is incredible, his best IMHO, and "Testify" was a great start to it!!! SRV truly made this song his own, like he does most songs he covers!!!

I had the rare pleasure of a by chance meeting with Chris Layton in Los Angeles as we were staying at the same hotel. We had coffee together and he was extraordinarily humble guy. I asked him if I could ask him about Stevie Ray knowing he must get asked constantly. He said absolutely and that he never gets tired of talking about his old friend. I simply asked him what kind of guy he was. He paused for a moment and then said that he was legitimately the sweetest person ever and would help anybody. Nuff said as I figured that would be the answer. How extremely satisfying to know he was genuinely a wonderful man. Something that is a rare thing today.
What made me realise Stevie was a genuine good guy was when he was on stage with his old blues guitar hero,s he stood back and took his foot off the gas. Out of respect
Your comment that “this could not have been written down” was very accurate; SRV could not read music. He learned by playing by ear, which is how he learned to play in the first place. It was said he never played a song exactly the same twice, but as you can imagine any improvisation by this man was always brilliant. I envy the rabbit hole you’ve just begun exploring, and hope you enjoy his many works as we who’ve grown to appreciate SRV all have. I have listened to this song perhaps 200 times and never tire of it, because watching a true genius do what the were born to do is never old. One more thing to notice: you will seldom if ever see him watch his placement of his left hand on the strings-most often he plays his songs with his eyes closed the entire time. So I doubt if he were blind it would make a difference- God put him on earth to play guitar, and thankfully for us he found his calling.

Absolutely hands down the Greatest of the great. I was fortunate enough to see him shortly before he died, he opened with Voodoo Child and as he started to sing the clouds opened up above the amphitheater and the crowd went nuts! I can truthfully say he put on the best concert I've ever been to in my 67 times around the sun
Jimi and SRV approached the instrument very differently, different eras , but two titans, for sure. That said, there are too many metrics, genres, to name a greatest guitarist. If no horns, vocals, keyboard drowning him out, Terry Kath in ‘68-70 is up there. Seeing Danny Gatton play up close, he could humble absolutely anyone else jamming w/ him, including Hendrix, who is so vastly over rated; JH couldn’t play fingerstyle, hybrid pick, slide, tap, and his repertoire was too narrow to place him on a pedestal above others.

SRV is unsurpassable. His cover is a huge tribute to Jimmy Hendrix, another very incredible talent. This said, SRV plays with his eyes closed almost the entire time. It took SRV countless hours to create this amazing arrangement. As a fan, all I can do is appreciate and enjoy this masterpiece of a song and the talent of both SRV and Jimmy Hendrix. How fortunate we are to have witnessed them both.
Stevie Ray was an extraordinary guitar player. We lost him too soon. RIP SRV. Pride and Joy is a good song. Alot of his songs sound bluesy. This song gives me chills. He gets so into it. He's one with that guitar. Love the video guys and your channel.
Loved this so much, y'all HAVE to watch more SRV live performances. Maybe by years ,he did bring a lot of invocation to music and I love his music but I also seen SRV in concert in 1984 .He was best blues guitarist for a number of years .In my opinion they are both goats of their profession but to say Hendrix was way ahead is crazy.Just my opinion.
The legendary BB King once said about Stevie when he saw play in Austin and in Dallas Texas when he invited him up on stage to join them, he said that Stevie was the blackest white boy he'd ever seen play a guitar, and he didn't mean it in any sort of negative way he said that boy has got a whole lot of soul
Yes, music is subjective ! Duane Allman was probably my favorite guitarist. Also enjoyed Neil Young's electric guitar sure there were many guitarist technically better but he played with so much feeling. There some guitarist who are very good but i won't listen to them because they don't play with soul, imo.

Definitely “Texas Flood “ live! I think the rest of the band kept rhythm and Stevie just played what he felt. It’s hard to rate guitarists because some passed way too soon. I don’t even know if they were in their primes yet. Stevie is in that category.
Thank you for sharing a hero from the get. First heard SRV, late in the night, early summer 1983, on the farm. Half asleep, this song woke me, and shook me, I had to know this Guitarist!!! Followed him in everything he did, and sadly, he was taken from the world, during my first tour in Iraq. Times were different then, no cellphone, no laptops... I , found out almost a week, after his passing... a few days from entering my first combat tour into Iraq. The first time I cried, since I was 13.
Had the great pleasure of seeing Stevie one time back in 1985 when I was 18 on the water in Baltimore. I was a drummer and had never really heard of him at the time. But after that night I was hooked!! He was an incredible gifted musician! One of my favorites is Life Without You. Glad to see you guys enjoy his music too.
Much of what jimmy and stevia learned was by ear. All throughout the last 80 plus years there have been some great talents in music alone. I’m glad you both got to experience this. Though to see him live you would have loved him much more

I lived in Dallas from early 70s through the 80s and saw him several times and was blown away of the mastery of his playing. he also played with his brothers band jimmy vaughn and the thunderbirds,, what a sad loss when he died in that helicopter crash. so many greats that left us way to early.
You guys really captured onto something around the 14:25 mark. By THIS time, SRV wasn't just about blues-shredding; he had already proved he was one of the greatest guitar players of the world by then. Now he was about fitting the virtuosity TO THE SONG, and working on being a complete performer: working on his singing, making sure his backing band got a chance to be heard, and writing really unique original material. In other words, this wasn't just empty showing-off - it's a complete performance. Before he died, he had gotten sober, but he just had to charter a private flight on a helicopter. UGH. If I was a manager of a genius, I'd be, "NO. YOU ARE FLYING CORPORATE. NO ARGUING PLEASE." The amount of rock and r&b legends killed by small aircraft is disquieting. Anyway, cheers!
I've been going to Stevie Ray shows all over Texas since about 1975 got to know him some Stevie was an awesome man . I miss him still. My left ear still buzzing since getting to close to a speaker on stage during sound check at the state fair in Amarillo 1988 I think. Awesome seeing people still finding SRV for the first time. Love it. RIP SRV.

Stevie Ray never played a song the same way twice. Every performance is different. Watch him play "Look at Little Sister ". Then, watch him and Jeff Healey do the same song. Both versions will blow your minds. Jeff was blind, by the way. Both versions are worth your time. 👌🥳
Jimi Hendrix was the one who never played his songs the same way especially his more popular songs. He was so creative he got bored playing his hits, he always wanted to move on to new music but he was expected to play certain songs. I saw Stevie play lots of times and he didn't change up the way he played his songs too much.
I also had the privilige to watch Jeff Healy play live at the Tivoli concert hall in Copenhagen, Denmark. Wonderful concert but not as wild as the SRV concert. I particularly remember his wonderful rendition of "When my Guitar Gently Weeps". I guss I've been very lucky, having experienced both Vaughan and Healy not soo long before they died. P.S. In January I'll be going to my second Manfred Mann's Earth Band concert. The first one was in 1986. I can't wait!
If you actually follow Stevie and have any first-hand knowledge of the fretboard you’d know that your comment about never playing a song the same way twice is off base. Every studio song he played live duplicated the recorded solos and fills with near perfection - so much more difficult than improvising at his level of playing.
Stevie Ray made it look easy because he had incredible talent, soul and swagger. He was at a pinnacle of achievement that few people ever achieve .Furthermore, Stevie Ray was among the first white musician to humbly acknowledge the contributions of black musicians and openly acknowledge that he was a white musician playing black music.

I'm subscribing to you guys just to see your reaction to Stevie's performance of "Texas Flood" Live at the El Mocambo. It's an amazing tour de force of blues guitar. It's basically a 9-1/2 minute solo that will knock your socks off.
I have been a fan of the guitarist in all forms for the entirety of my life, and my top 10 are common in a lot of the top 10 lists put out by the so-called experts but because of who he was as a person, what he overcame, and his unmatched abilities with a guitar, SRV does not make my top 10, but he rather holds a spot all his own above and beyond the worldly players. Something...well...supernatural occurred when he played. He played not only through his soul and instrument, but he pulled from those that watched and listened as well. He mesmerized and captivated his audience. It is sometimes seemingly unreal. I urge you to watch closely his last performance at ACL particularly the song Leave My Girl Alone. You will see the transformation when his eyes roll back in his head and he becomes that channel that Eric Clapton refers to that Stevies music flowed from. Don't forget to focus on his hand and fingers as well. Never misses a note and never pauses for thought. And here come the goosebumps!

This isn't exactly true because none of those artists play a song called "Voodoo Child". The name of the song is "Voodoo Chile". If you listen close, the lyrics are, "I'm a voodoo chile, Lord knows I'm a voodoo chile..."

In his handwritten lyrics, he used "Voodoo Chile" for the longer song, while he used both "Voodoo CHILE (Slight Return)" and "Voodoo CHILD (Slight Return)" for the following one recorded with the Experience. In his handwritten album notes for Electric Ladyland sent to his record company, he listed the songs as "Voodoo Chile" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)"; when the album was released in the US by Reprise Records on October 16, 1968, these spellings for the two songs were used!!!!
I was lucky enough see Stevie Ray in the infancy of his career. The first timevwascin a large Cowboy bar called Branch Man's in Calgary Alberta Canada 🇨🇦. There was about 35 people in the bar. Those cowboy's booed him, i was like you cowboy's have no idea what you're witnessing. Stood inches away from Stevie thevwhole set. My friend and I Barry bought Stevie and his band beers during his set. He had a five night stand saw him every night. Managed to see him 9 more times. He remembered me every time. When guitar and man become one! This reminds me of something my son told me when he was in college and at a foreign language camp for a weekend. They were only allowed to speak that language. He asked the other students if they were translating in their heads or were they thinking in the language. They all said they were translating. I asked him what he was doing and he said he was thinking in the language. That's what Stevie is doing: the music just flows out of him down to his fingers! Great reaction!

Grew up in Texas listening to him as a kid. SRV, John Lee Hooker, Jimi, and all the other great blues players are the reason I picked up the guitar. It was awful when we lost him in the 80's. SRV was inspired by Jimi and took it to his own style/level. You're right, most of what he's playing is just off his head and what he feels. He didn't play that guitar, he became it. I get chills every time I hear him play.
Jimi was my hero as a teenager, still love him! I'm so glad that younger generations appreciate his talent. Stevie Ray was a good substitute but gone too soon, as was Jimi.

I asked him if I could ask him about Stevie Ray knowing he must get asked constantly. He said absolutely and that he never gets tired of talking about his old friend. I simply asked him what kind of guy he was. He paused for a moment and then said that he was legitimately the sweetest person ever and would help anybody. Nuff said as I figured that would be the answer. How extremely satisfying to know he was genuinely a wonderful man. Something that is a rare thing today.
What made me realise Stevie was a genuine good guy was when he was on stage with his old blues guitar hero,s he stood back and took his foot off the gas. Out of respect
Your comment that “this could not have been written down” was very accurate; SRV could not read music. He learned by playing by ear, which is how he learned to play in the first place. It was said he never played a song exactly the same twice, but as you can imagine any improvisation by this man was always brilliant. I envy the rabbit hole you’ve just begun exploring, and hope you enjoy his many works as we who’ve grown to appreciate SRV all have. I have listened to this song perhaps 200 times and never tire of it, because watching a true genius do what the were born to do is never old. One more thing to notice: you will seldom if ever see him watch his placement of his left hand on the strings-most often he plays his songs with his eyes closed the entire time. So I doubt if he were blind it would make a difference- God put him on earth to play guitar, and thankfully for us he found his calling.

Absolutely hands down the Greatest of the great. I was fortunate enough to see him shortly before he died, he opened with Voodoo Child and as he started to sing the clouds opened up above the amphitheater and the crowd went nuts! I can truthfully say he put on the best concert I've ever been to in my 67 times around the sun

Jimi and SRV approached the instrument very differently, different eras , but two titans, for sure. That said, there are too many metrics, genres, to name a greatest guitarist. If no horns, vocals, keyboard drowning him out, Terry Kath in ‘68-70 is up there. Seeing Danny Gatton play up close, he could humble absolutely anyone else jamming w/ him, including Hendrix, who is so vastly over rated; JH couldn’t play fingerstyle, hybrid pick, slide, tap, and his repertoire was too narrow to place him on a pedestal above others.

SRV is unsurpassable. His cover is a huge tribute to Jimmy Hendrix, another very incredible talent. This said, SRV plays with his eyes closed almost the entire time. It took SRV countless hours to create this amazing arrangement. As a fan, all I can do is appreciate and enjoy this masterpiece of a song and the talent of both SRV and Jimmy Hendrix. How fortunate we are to have witnessed them both.
Stevie Ray was an extraordinary guitar player. We lost him too soon. RIP SRV. Pride and Joy is a good song. Alot of his songs sound bluesy. This song gives me chills. He gets so into it. He's one with that guitar. Love the video guys and your channel.

Maybe by years ,he did bring a lot of invocation to music and I love his music but I also seen SRV in concert in 1984 .He was best blues guitarist for a number of years .In my opinion they are both goats of their profession but to say Hendrix was way ahead is crazy.Just my opinion.

Yes, music is subjective ! Duane Allman was probably my favorite guitarist. Also enjoyed Neil Young's electric guitar sure there were many guitarist technically better but he played with so much feeling. There some guitarist who are very good but i won't listen to them because they don't play with soul, imo.

Definitely “Texas Flood “ live! I think the rest of the band kept rhythm and Stevie just played what he felt. It’s hard to rate guitarists because some passed way too soon. I don’t even know if they were in their primes yet. Stevie is in that category.

SRV couldn't read music at all. All of his songs are great. Lenny is a song her wrote for his wife and it's also what he called his guitar.

Half asleep, this song woke me, and shook me, I had to know this Guitarist!!!
Followed him in everything he did, and sadly, he was taken from the world, during my first tour in Iraq.
Times were different then, no cellphone, no laptops... I , found out almost a week, after his passing... a few days from entering my first combat tour into Iraq.
The first time I cried, since I was 13.
Had the great pleasure of seeing Stevie one time back in 1985 when I was 18 on the water in Baltimore. I was a drummer and had never really heard of him at the time. But after that night I was hooked!! He was an incredible gifted musician! One of my favorites is Life Without You. Glad to see you guys enjoy his music too.

I lived in Dallas from early 70s through the 80s and saw him several times and was blown away of the mastery of his playing. he also played with his brothers band jimmy vaughn and the thunderbirds,, what a sad loss when he died in that helicopter crash. so many greats that left us way to early.
You guys really captured onto something around the 14:25 mark. By THIS time, SRV wasn't just about blues-shredding; he had already proved he was one of the greatest guitar players of the world by then. Now he was about fitting the virtuosity TO THE SONG, and working on being a complete performer: working on his singing, making sure his backing band got a chance to be heard, and writing really unique original material. In other words, this wasn't just empty showing-off - it's a complete performance. Before he died, he had gotten sober, but he just had to charter a private flight on a helicopter. UGH. If I was a manager of a genius, I'd be, "NO. YOU ARE FLYING CORPORATE. NO ARGUING PLEASE." The amount of rock and r&b legends killed by small aircraft is disquieting. Anyway, cheers!
I've been going to Stevie Ray shows all over Texas since about 1975 got to know him some Stevie was an awesome man . I miss him still.
My left ear still buzzing since getting to close to a speaker on stage during sound check at the state fair in Amarillo 1988 I think.

It's almost sacrilege when I think that he does those guys' songs better than they did, but, sometimes, he really did. If you really want to look into Stevie's soul, listen to his song, "Lenny". Best love song I've ever heard.

Rivera paradise is another one of his that shows his fusion of jazz and blues. He really was starting to explore so many sounds in his playing.

Stevie Ray never played a song the same way twice. Every performance is different. Watch him play "Look at Little Sister ". Then, watch him and Jeff Healey do the same song. Both versions will blow your minds. Jeff was blind, by the way. Both versions are worth your time. 👌🥳
Jimi Hendrix was the one who never played his songs the same way especially his more popular songs. He was so creative he got bored playing his hits, he always wanted to move on to new music but he was expected to play certain songs. I saw Stevie play lots of times and he didn't change up the way he played his songs too much.
I got Stevie and Jeff at the top of my favorite guitarists.
I also had the privilige to watch Jeff Healy play live at the Tivoli concert hall in Copenhagen, Denmark. Wonderful concert but not as wild as the SRV concert. I particularly remember his wonderful rendition of "When my Guitar Gently Weeps".
I guss I've been very lucky, having experienced both Vaughan and Healy not soo long before they died.
P.S. In January I'll be going to my second Manfred Mann's Earth Band concert. The first one was in 1986. I can't wait!
If you actually follow Stevie and have any first-hand knowledge of the fretboard you’d know that your comment about never playing a song the same way twice is off base. Every studio song he played live duplicated the recorded solos and fills with near perfection - so much more difficult than improvising at his level of playing.
Stevie Ray made it look easy because he had incredible talent, soul and swagger. He was at a pinnacle of achievement that few people ever achieve .Furthermore, Stevie Ray was among the first white musician to humbly acknowledge the contributions of black musicians and openly acknowledge that he was a white musician playing black music.

I'm subscribing to you guys just to see your reaction to Stevie's performance of "Texas Flood" Live at the El Mocambo. It's an amazing tour de force of blues guitar. It's basically a 9-1/2 minute solo that will knock your socks off.
Believe me I understand SRVs greatest but let's give props to the bass player for holding it all together. Fantastic
I have been a fan of the guitarist in all forms for the entirety of my life, and my top 10 are common in a lot of the top 10 lists put out by the so-called experts but because of who he was as a person, what he overcame, and his unmatched abilities with a guitar, SRV does not make my top 10, but he rather holds a spot all his own above and beyond the worldly players. Something...well...supernatural occurred when he played. He played not only through his soul and instrument, but he pulled from those that watched and listened as well. He mesmerized and captivated his audience. It is sometimes seemingly unreal. I urge you to watch closely his last performance at ACL particularly the song Leave My Girl Alone. You will see the transformation when his eyes roll back in his head and he becomes that channel that Eric Clapton refers to that Stevies music flowed from. Don't forget to focus on his hand and fingers as well. Never misses a note and never pauses for thought. And here come the goosebumps!

I've heard a few great guitarists, including Steve Vai, Yngvie Malmsteen and Joe Satriani (another of my faves) cover "Voodoo Child" and nobody does it like SRV!!!
This isn't exactly true because none of those artists play a song called "Voodoo Child". The name of the song is "Voodoo Chile". If you listen close, the lyrics are, "I'm a voodoo chile, Lord knows I'm a voodoo chile..."

Long answer: Jimi Hendrix occasionally used different names and spellings for some of his songs. In his handwritten lyrics, he used "Voodoo Chile" for the longer song, while he used both "Voodoo CHILE (Slight Return)" and "Voodoo CHILD (Slight Return)" for the following one recorded with the Experience.
In his handwritten album notes for Electric Ladyland sent to his record company, he listed the songs as "Voodoo Chile" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)"; when the album was released in the US by Reprise Records on October 16, 1968, these spellings for the two songs were used!!!!
I was lucky enough see Stevie Ray in the infancy of his career.
The first timevwascin a large Cowboy bar called Branch Man's in Calgary Alberta Canada 🇨🇦.
There was about 35 people in the bar.
Those cowboy's booed him, i was like you cowboy's have no idea what you're witnessing.
Stood inches away from Stevie thevwhole set.
My friend and I Barry bought Stevie and his band beers during his set.
He had a five night stand saw him every night.
Managed to see him 9 more times.
He remembered me every time.
I play a fender strat as an amateur.
When he died it really affected me.
He was such a good friendly man to me .
So happy when people discover his music.

I was fortunate to see Stevie Ray Vaughan live in concert when I was in high school back in 1987.
Back in the day we didn't have instructional videos and UA-cam videos to watch to make us better players we just absolutely had to figure it out. Jimmy's Spirit was huge and it affected many, many of us guitar players.

That El Mocambo set Stevie played is legendary,it's easily in the top 10 live performances by an artist,imo and is by far my personal favorite of all time.That being said,any live performance by Stevie Ray is absolute fire,they're all great and deserve a listen...
A great song to demonstrate how incredible this man is is "Look at Little Sister" from the same concert.. he brakes a string mid solo and you don't notice until he doing a flawless guitar change afterwards.

I was so blessed to see him live twice and ill never forget it, many say this version of Voodoo Chile in this clip is even better than Jimi's, thats a lot to say but go and listen to both versions and judge for yourself. Stevie said his version of this song is a tribute to Jimi's version as it was originally Jimi's song.

When guitar and man become one! This reminds me of something my son told me when he was in college and at a foreign language camp for a weekend. They were only allowed to speak that language. He asked the other students if they were translating in their heads or were they thinking in the language. They all said they were translating. I asked him what he was doing and he said he was thinking in the language. That's what Stevie is doing: the music just flows out of him down to his fingers! Great reaction!

Grew up in Texas listening to him as a kid. SRV, John Lee Hooker, Jimi, and all the other great blues players are the reason I picked up the guitar. It was awful when we lost him in the 80's. SRV was inspired by Jimi and took it to his own style/level. You're right, most of what he's playing is just off his head and what he feels. He didn't play that guitar, he became it. I get chills every time I hear him play.
Jimi was my hero as a teenager, still love him! I'm so glad that younger generations appreciate his talent. Stevie Ray was a good substitute but gone too soon, as was Jimi.
