My mother was from Texas and I grew up hearing SRV every Saturday morning for years. I always knew her mood based on the songs playing. She had tickets to the concert he was supposed to perform with Clapton before the helicopter crash. He followed in his brother Jimmy's (Fabulous Thunderbirds) footsteps and embraced the southern/blues/soul roots. He snuck into bars at 14 to hear and play with some of the greatest blues artists ever. Check out his performances with Jeff Healey and his adventures in Montreaux. The first time he was booed. The second appearance was magical.
Bro, I love it. I played keyboards in hip-hop groups growing up and shit, and when I was asked to play guitar, cause I played a little, then heard him I stopped playing for awhile. Then I dedicated a few weeks, then months, then it turned into years trying to play his style, picking up Albert, Jimi, and Clapton along the way, blew my mind how melodic this mkr was. Same as Jimi, I'm still in awe of how he was at my age and I've been playing since he passed
Saw SRV in the mid-70's in South Texas before he was well-known, playing with a band I believe called the Cobras, his roots in blues was so strong, and remember thinking this guy was gonna be bigger than anyone else on the scene at that time. He was the epitome of Texas blues, a Texas legend, and a damn nice guy to boot. We miss him, he was truly one of the greatest of all time.
I think the audience was just sitting there in stunned silence in the face of this briliance! 😁 Stevie was using a wah-wah pedal that used to belong to Jimi Hendrix. He personally asked Jimi's family for permission to cover this song, and Jimi's father gave him the pedal as a gift. Jimi was one of his biggest idols, and it's been said that no one covered Jimi better than Stevie. He wasn't just covering him here, he was channeling him in a way all his own. Here are some more suggestions for you: Texas Flood (Live at the El Mocambo): ua-cam.com/video/KC5H9P4F5Uk/v-deo.html Tin Pan Alley (with Johnny Copeland): ua-cam.com/video/AGPx-ekqZEo/v-deo.html Love Struck Baby / Rude Mood: ua-cam.com/video/O4IKddEs5xs/v-deo.html Riviera Paradise: ua-cam.com/video/3c_8VUL5jks/v-deo.html Everything he did was awesome; those are just for a start. Stevie Ray is always best experienced live. His studio recordings were great, but his energy really came out on stage. Each live performance was unique because he made a point of never playing any song the same way twice. Thankfully we can now watch many of them on YT and choose our favourites. Sadly he died in a helicopter crash in 1990, but he will live on in his music. I'm so happy you're discovering him and spreading the word to others! Hope you enjoy my suggestions!
The crowd is both mesmerized and shocked! They are very much aware that they're witnessing greatness. There simply is no crowd participation because everyone is studying those killer riffs. Its just the way it was at many shows back then. You came to see a performance...not some popular image whereby the audience participates and is a big part of the overall show.
Ever thought the audience was in total awe lol Actually SEEING SRV perform LIVE...We're agog at his VIDEO....most DO sit and just gawp at his sheer talent.... The best tribute to Hendrix only Stevie could carry off 💞🤟🏼 RIP 2 Legends
This is a "Studio Audience". It was recorded for the TV show Austin City Limits. You're not allowed to stand, it can interfere with the filming. You'll see the same thing with the Midnight Special videos.
You should pull up Stevie and B.B. King playing together. The most influential legends of blues were in awe of stevies skills. "I've said that playing the blues is like having to be black twice. Stevie Ray Vaughan missed on both counts, but I never noticed." B. B. King The first time that Buddy Guy, quite possibly the greatest living blues guitarist, heard Stevie Ray Vaughan play, he couldn’t believe it. “He was hitting them notes and made me feel like I should go in the audience and watch so I could learn something,” Buddy Guy
Texas Flood from Austin by Stevie, Tin Pan Alley with Johnny Copeland. Little Wing, Look at Little Sister. SRV did this song slightly different every time. Self taught, used major heavy strings which would tear tip of his fingertips. BB King said “ I've said that playing the blues is like having to be black twice. Stevie Ray Vaughan missed on both counts, but I never noticed.”
El Mocambo is a famous venue in Toronto ( Th Stones played there as a warm up for a tour). It is not a large venue andthis show was recorded for TV which explainsthe "passivity" I also think the audience were in a trance - they were not expecting this
@@billmavin1998 this specific show is for Austin City Limits, filmed in a TV studio on the University of Texas campus in a building that looks like a shitty accountant's office. It is very much not a large venue or club, there were less than 300 people in there to witness this.
Yes and try reading his lips when he grins at his crew off stage to let them know what had just happened to him😂. It comes after the great message he delivers at the end of the song!
No man, this is just how we took the music in back then..This wasn't just your everyday disco slop!..This was some damn serious playing going on here!..People absorb music in their own way...There's toe-tapping, mindless crap, then there's this...Think of it this way; do you chug expensive wine, or do you savor it?..The people there knew they were witnessing greatness, and they don't wanna miss any of it...And just to put a period on this statement..Look at your face around at the 4 minute mark..You ain't moving then, are you?..Know why?..'cause you realized just how special this is, and you are stunned..Well, now you know what they were feeling, and/or it could also be that they were stoned off their ass!...Lol!
If you want to see Stevie show his true skill and transmission of pure emotion through his guitar, check out Rivera Paradise, Lenny, or his cover of Little Wing.
This was recorded for the TV series Austin City Limits. Folks are told beforehand they may be on TV in the background, and to stay seated, or they'd be escorted out of the venue. Ain't nobody gonna chance getting kicked out of a venue when they're watching something like this happen right before their eyes.
That guitar (called "One" or "First Wife" was well used when Stevie got it. He just put a few thousand more miles on it. After he died, I believe that guitar was auctioned off for $633,000.00. And yes, people should be up on their feet during this! You might want to watch "Look at Little Sister" if you want to see another great performance.
Now his brother might have auctioned off but , upon Stevie's untimely death ; as it was written in his Will - Brother was given that and several other guitars .
Number One was never sold. The one he called "Lenny" sold for the amount you mentioned. I wonder what Number One would sell for at auction. It would have to be one of the most expensive ones in history.
Number one is absolutely priceless. I don’t understand how you can be this much of a fan and think for a second number one could ever be sold. The guitar that was sold was Lenny, which guitar center bought and has on display in Austin Texas
Perry Bernard: all you have to do is listen to guitarist before Hendrix and guitarist after Hendrix to see he was a huge influence on many many guitarist.
My cousin and I were stagehands back in the day and sat on his monitor on stage 3 feet away from him during soundcheck for 45 minutes in 1987 at the Illinois State Fair. I think my mouth was dragging the ground the whole time in awe!
Stevie did this song as a tribute. Unfortunately both of these amazing musicians died too soon. Also, Jimmi was left handed, it was originally a Bob Dylan Song, and the crazy noises are pedals as far as I know. Great video!
Right, when he's just using his left hand, for chords, he uses the wa wa pedals. Most videos don't show his feet, but there are a couple out there. Plus the reverb lever on the guitar.
This was not a DYlan song, All along the watchtower was written and performed by Dylan about 8 years before Jimi did it... Voodoo Chile was written by Jimi
He was playing on "Austin City Limits". It's a LIVE tv show. That's why nobody was dancing around. However, most of his audiences were in total AWE of his music & were memorized by his talent.
If you want to see where his skills were honed, watch Albert King and Stevie Ray do Texas Flood. (Albert tells the story of how he met Stevie and tells Stevie that "you're good, but you could be better. It'll come with time.")
I like the way you keep restarting the song. The first minute of SRV's version of Voodoo Child is one of the gnarliest bits of Rock-n-Roll ever. The whole song is great.
Great review. I saw him twice before he died and in defense of the audience just sitting there, I will say this: When you watched him, the things he did to/with his guitar put you into a hypnotic state, or some such. All you could do was stare at him in awe.
You should check out his guitar sound Check where’s he is wearing a leopard coat and when you do remember it is just a sound check and that he had just woke up a couple minutes before doing it I am looking forward to seeing you do this one.
If & when they are recording for a video or album, allot of times they will inform the audiences in advance. Many times they will ask for their cooperation to keep it down while the actual song is being performed. Then they can react afterwards or at pauses... such as you see & hear during & at the end. On the other hand...mostly it's not wanting to miss a single second of what he is performing because you can blink and not get to experience it. Trust me, ive seen him 6 times. Haha, you nailed it! Jimi Hendrix did play a right-handed guitar upside down! I’ve seen him do it in videos. He was left-handed, and he just couldn’t make himself switch. That said, Stevie was the GOAT, in my opinion.
“Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will...” That's not a bad thing when you're talking about SRV.
The "slight return" is there because Jimi wrote the original voodoo chile, a nearly 15 minute masterpiece, and his label said he needed a single on the album, so he made slight return as a more radio/ popular music part 2.
Jimmy was left handed but they only made right hand guitars back then so he played it upside down. That put the tremolo bar or whammy bar up under his forearm so he could mess with it while both hands were on the strings. Amazing. What can you say about Stevie? Wow
