- How long can one man talk about 3 capacitors a d a few diodes? Well, evidently, 40 odd minutes ha!
Hello you fine people.
Welcome to my beginners tubescreamer mod video.
In this video I modify a Joyo Vintage Overdrive which is a cheap Chinese tubescreamer ts clone. These pedals sound really good prior to any mods.
If you want to hear a comparison of the modified and unmodified versions along with one of my handwired SRV variants, skip to minute 44:25.

Thank you mate I will definitely start filming more. I have a few other video ideas.
Great video, very informative. That said, the "vintage Soviet PIO capacitor in economy Chinese overdrive" mod is one of the silliest things ever committed to the historical record.
Thank you for the kind words. Really? How so? I put it to you that upgrading the components in here is actually more cost effective than if I was to build one in my regular style. The sounds results are also pleasing.
All the best,
Joe
@@hellosailoreffectsofficial Although they look pretty cool, paper-in-oil capacitors are strictly a downgrade with respect to modern spec components, and any perceptible sonic difference is going to be a result of capacitance drift rather than any intrinsic property of the component's dielectric substrate. I could see some argument for using NOS components in a vintage instrument for the sake of historical preservation, but the use-case you're presenting here is ludicrous.
Well I certainly wouldn't put a component into anything without checking it's exact value. Agreed there is likely no audible difference at this voltage, however: Have you considered the psychosomatic affect? I "know" the component is in there, it makes me feel good about the pedal, I feel good so I play better. "It's all in your head" I hear a lot, well my perception of the world is in my head so I'm good with that. If it feels real it Is real. Matrix anyone?
Man I've got to say I love the debate. Please expand.
@@hellosailoreffectsofficial I like it better when you put it that way. Although I never thought that it was a bad idea, only that it was a funny idea. There's something perverse about it that's appealing. And I like the idea of "PIO capacitor in Joyo overdrive" more than "PIO capacitor in vintage TS-9."
@ryancunningham6209 I actually agree with you too an the actual sound side of it. I just bukd or mould what I would like to see when I take the back cover off a pedal.
This is an awesome video, following this as my first ever pedal mod and learned a ton! Please make similar videos in the future
Thank you mate. I really appreciate the feedback. I'm going to make a few more similar videos
awesome
Thank you mate I have more coming
So I got all the way to the end to see what it sounded like and the audio was not there for the test comparison. Why didn't you use lower voltage capacitors instead of those huge voltage ones?
Apologies, the rig for recording audio I had back then had its limitations. It seemed to work on certain interfaces, phones and computers but not others.
Rest assured I have rectified this issue for the current videos i put out.
Simply because I like the way they look. It's purely psychosomatic, I feel good knowing they are in there so I feel good about the pedal. This in turn makes me feel better when I play. I feel better so I play better.
Thank you so much for watching along.
Joe
Great video! Can you list what components you used? I was trying to figure them out in the video, but it would be easier if you could add them in the video info section. Thank you! :)
Thank you I really appreciate the kind words. I shall watch the video over the coming days to ascertain what components I used for this.
@@hellosailoreffectsofficial Thank you very much! I'm going to do this mod to my Joyo. :)
Was it difficult to learn how to solder? Did the military teach you how to do this sort of thing?
Hello mate,
It's wasn't particularly difficult and the Navy did teach me some initial skills. By enlarge I am self taught as I'm primarily a mechanical engineer by trade.
Question. In the off (center) position does the switch have to provide a through connection around the diodes? Thanks for sharing this mod with us, TAVA brother.
Hello Eric.
Great to hear from a fellow kegger.
No there's no requirement for a through connection. I've just simply clipped the old diodes out of a fee of my ts pedals for a similar mod.
Joe
Great tips! Can you tell us which Knipex number that tool is?
Sorry mate I have only just seen this comment.
Article No.

There you go.
Hey I am curious what kind of switch you used? it is dpdt on/off/on
Hello mate. That is exactly correct. You can use on/on too, but you only get 2 settings then.
@@hellosailoreffectsofficial Thank you sir. I just picked this pedal up today and will be trying some of the mods. Thank you for a great vid!
@@jamesakers4421 Awesome. I would love to hear how you get on mate.
How can i tell what dipdes i should be buying for these mods. Am i looking for specific multimeter readings or does it just matter the type (i.e. germanium)
Hello mate,
Personally, I buy several different types of diodes and try them out in circuit. The standard would be 1n1418 silicon diodes that have a forward voltage of 0.7v. As a rule of thumb the higher the voltage the more clarity you get (something like an LED or several silicon in series). Germanium tends to feel softer as it has a lower forward voltage of around 0.3v.
For me I like to try lots of combinations before settling on a sound.
Joe
@@hellosailoreffectsofficial thank you for the info! Looks like I'm going on a mini diode shopping spree!
I'd love to hear your results.
@@hellosailoreffectsofficial done some tweaking over the past few days. Went a little crazy and added in 2 switches with 4 diode setups. Went with a mix of silicone, germanium and leds. some symetrical and some asymetrical. Some of the setups are a lot quieter than the rest though. would that be a resistance/continuity thing?
@logankohl I think it's down to the amount of gain or volume. What ones are you finding quiet and what are noisy?
Great idea by the way. I love that you went the extra step.
is it possible to increase treble in tone control to simulate a presence control?
I would buy the BYOC Crown Jewel pedal kit if you have soldering skills. The pedal can do a tube screamer and it has a presence knob.
Exactly what @ramencurry6672 says mate. The presence control works a little differently. After building the BYOC Crown Jewel, you may well simply implement the presence control into your regular tubescreamer.
@joe could a joyo ts808 clone be modded to sound more like a black rat pedal?
It could take a step in that direction if the clipping was changed to hard clipping. My mail question would be, to what end?
That is only experiment.. but the fact the original i would say best.. and why your demo is muted.. i cant hear any sound..
I think I have a clearer demo over on my Instagram account mate.
It may be something to do with the way I recorded it. Some devices play the sound and other do not.
Joe
No se escucha la comparativa de sonido. Que lastima.😢
Sorry mate I should have compared them at the end you are indeed correct.
