Been a guitarist for over 30yrs, I've owned damn near every pedal & guitar on the market. I have the Tube Screamer, and I own this JOYO pedal. I gotta' admit, this pedal is pretty bad-ass! I currently gig with it, it sounds killer, tone is every bit as good as my Tube Screamer....... And, for less than $40 bucks, it's a no-brainer. Was worth every penny! BTW: Good video!
Also just bought the Joyo for only 20 bucks used after watching this, thing will sound amazing thru my 1969 Fender Princeton, and blended with the EHX Soul Food
These 'Joyo' Pedals are so good that Ibanez will either go out of business or bring prices down. In a live setting I challenge anyone to find a difference between the two. 'Nux' pedals are also very good, as are 'Harley Benton' and the other re-branded pedals. Why pay extortionate prices for so called "Named" brands when you can get the same for £29.00...Awesome stuff.
Carl Windsor I was going to buy Canyon by EHX for £130gbp. Then I discovered a clone by Donner for £33.99gbp and it's just as good. These USA brands are far too expensive for what they are. At the end of the day they're the same thing. I'm happy I saved £100!
It's because from electronic point of view, the circuit of such effect is quite simple. There is no wizardy, or complicated electronics or expensive elements inside. But not all people know that
These vids are really making me excited! I just bought the High Gain distortion pedal with the mid eq, and I can't wait to try it out. I have a feeling I'm going to end up with several of these little gems.
Thank you Gino so much or this video! I have seen other reviews on the Joyo and have ordered my own from Amazon. Your review was the one that put any question to rest! Thankz
Great Review! Your review actually made me order one, and also the Vintage Phase, from in another review (Into The Blues); another fine sounding pedal (MXR Phase 90 clone). Your happiness and surprise upon hearing and then favoring the sound of the VO actually made me topple laughing with my spilling coffee!! Thanks...
Hi, Ben... I removed the TS9 from my board. Yes. But I didn't replace it with the Joyo. The Joyo is great for replacing a TS9 but my favorite overdrive pedal is hands down the Oddfellow Effects Caveman Drive. I've been using that pedal for awhile now and it's not going anywhere! lol... It's staying on the board. Thanks for your comment! :)
Hey there! Greetings from El Salvador. your review of this pedal convinced me of getting one. I got it last thursday and I tried it with low volume (neighbors) I couldn´t try it as I wanted. My friend tried it in a gig last night and, oh my, Thnks for your excellent review
I like the Joyo more too. My borderline infringement TS clone is a Deltalab, works fine also. But you made me a believer in the Caveman, costs a little more than a TS9 and way less than the TS808 reissue. After hearing you rave about it and seeing what it does, I expected it to cost more.
sounds great man. thanks for the video. i am buying the joyo right now. The joyo is < $30 on amazon, and this sounds like a steal!!! i'm using a metal zone mt2 and a DOD grunge for distortion, so this will give me that sound i'm missing.
I just bought a used Joyo on reverb. I hate the way the cheap pedals look, so, I took it apart, sanded and swirl painted it. Honestly, the thing sounds fantastic. I was using a battery to power it tonight and I was a little nervous it would eat it up too fast. It didn't. I personally feel, and I know I'm not alone, that you don't need a boutique pedal just for jamming at home or with friends. Even if you are gigging out with a band a few times a week, nobody will ever know what kind of pedals you are using unless they see them on your board. Which is why I'll buy the cheap pedals, paint them up, and put them to work. People won't believe you when you tell them that awesome sounding boutique pedal is actually a $30 Japanese knock off. Ps. If I ever sell these painted pedals, I never try and claim them as something they are not.
There are so many TS clones out there. I found an Aria brand one about 15 years ago in a guitar shop bargain bin. I plugged it in and it sounded exactly like a TS. I couldn't convince the sales guy though. When I got it home, it was a part-for-part clone, right down to the 4558 IC. Even the parts that have no bearing on the sound were copied. If the Joyo is true-bypass, then a slightly better comparison would have been done with it first in line. As is, its signal is being buffered by the (bypassed) Ibanez pedal. And if you buy the TS9, you will always have a buffered signal. Nit-picking I know, but hey... Depending on your rig etc, that buffer can make a difference. Anyway, thanks for a nice video...
I think on single notes the TS9 sound better. The thing you said about Joyo its more "transparent" actually i felt that ibanez TS9 was more like this than the joyo. But the joyo have some "paste" sound, i little more dirty thing. Well i actually have a Joyo Clon because of the price.
It's a Fact! The JOYO kicks ass and has way better harmonics than the TS9. I paid $27.99 for mine years ago on Amazon and haven't looked back. I've had ALL of the Ibanez Tube Screamers (all Vintage), and the JOYO smokes them. The knobs feel to be high quality when you turn them, the case is heavy duty, and the button does not 'pop' during On/Off switching like some other cheap pedals. And yes, I was a full-time/on-the-road and local club performer. 😁
Just discovered joyo today looking at cheap pedals online. Wow is all I got. That's a sound I'm looking for and for under $50 it's a steal. Love the fact it's got true bypass too.
Sounds like the Joyo has a bit more gain and that basically the drive should be turned up on the Ibanez to match. Saw another vs. video where it was the other way around. Overall the tonal shape is similar, but there is more gain in the joyo. Nice review, but little less talking would be fine.
Gino, I've seen you play and you play well I totally agree the prices on pedals is crazy, I have the Joyo also, it's a great tube screamer but as for the holy grail of overdrives for me it's the Fulltone Plimsoul that is the absolute holy grail of OD's. that's my 2 cents anyway. Take care.
Ive been using the ts9 for about a year now. Im considering to replace it with a Joyo after watching this vid, the joyo seems to have more presence, brighter, sustains more and has a better "scream" to it. Just wondering, did you remove the ts9 from your board? sometimes i find it too "muddled-sounding"..sorry for the lack of descriptive words..cheers from manila, philippines! Great review!
the joyo is actually supposed to be a clone of the TS 808 I think. Differences between the two are subtle but the joyo is defintely worth it ! it has a "je ne sais quoi" (the proper chip I guess), a mildness which is absolutely delightful . I got mine today and I just hope it will stand the test of time.
Damn ,, I just bought this pedal from thomann in germany.. waiting for it to arrive.. I have been playing a VOX VT50, closed back modelling 1x12 combo for a while with its 8 bank solid metal pedal board. It has served me well both at gigs, but the sound was never the same as an open back ~30 watt tube combo with a couple of great pedals. Also got the joyo classic chorus (slighty clearer boss ce-2 clone) and a dynamic compressor from joyo. Need a delay pedal but with tap or programing.
Joyo's Vintage Overdrive is $30 on Ebay, around $100 less than their Ibanez counterparts (also on Ebay). It's a no-brainer! Sweet review broku, very helpful/10
I think the pedal on the left more accurately depicts the psychological struggle in the minds of the commanding officers of the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish invasion respectively, however the pedal on the right if matched precisely sounds a little more like a dry August afternoon in July somewhere around the 37 degree lattitude. They both sound like a Band Master turned up ? Joyo at the door $17.00 ebay .
I agree. The Ibanez does sound warmer to the ear. But to the touch, I prefer the Joyo. It's not so stiff and stodgy as the Ibanez. You can dial warmth in. Feel is a tougher thing to dial so the Joyo wins for me.
the joyo has slightly more gain so to match them even better, take the joyo down "an hour" from the TS. its just where the gain lays on the pot: say if you set the TS to 11:00 set your joyo to 10;00 (this is the case at least with my joyo)
The high end and presence of the joyo is my crackly and rough... (frying sound) - great for aging ears to hear the detail again. (d'oh!) the Ibanez is just smoother. But I found a few Joyos for $25 on eBay... and JHS modifies them... so it could be fun. - The EHX East River Drive is also a Chinese TS clone and also $40. .. but at least some Americans get paid too. JHS also modifies them and Ibanez too...
Holy shit you play tasty licks! Wow! I'm really trying to be fair here, but the Ibanez has more happening in it's sound that when going through a hot amp will multiply those subtleties. ' More weight' is a good way to put it.
dang. I saw a bunch of their things on amazon, didn't bother to look up reviews, but all of their pedals were so cheap. I pretty much decided to get one of those DIY tube overdrive kits. I sold a tube works tube overdrive a long time ago for the going rate and now they're $300. geez. I went the wrong way on that one.
omg!!!! I'm reeeeeeeeeeally interested in these joyo pedals. To be honest, I liked ibanez TS more, but just a little more- However, the price difference between them is HUGE! so thumbs up to JOYO VO :)

8 years later, do you think the same ? I'm considering this joyo vintage.
I watched this vid and bought one before it ended.
hahahaha i bought at 2:28
Same LOL
bought one 2 minutes before i came here^^
i bought one two minutes after i came
Also just bought the Joyo for only 20 bucks used after watching this, thing will sound amazing thru my 1969 Fender Princeton, and blended with the EHX Soul Food

I think so.
I like the Joyo more. I gotta buy one. Great tone.
It's because from electronic point of view, the circuit of such effect is quite simple. There is no wizardy, or complicated electronics or expensive elements inside. But not all people know that
@@MB-rc8ie yes.. but they gave you the same result... so the wizardy is only for the price hike
These vids are really making me excited! I just bought the High Gain distortion pedal with the mid eq, and I can't wait to try it out. I have a feeling I'm going to end up with several of these little gems.
At last a pedal test with someone who can actually play really good. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
Thank you Gino so much or this video! I have seen other reviews on the Joyo and have ordered my own from Amazon. Your review was the one that put any question to rest! Thankz
Holy crap...they do sound almost identical. Guess what pedal is arriving at my door today...the Joyo.
First off, you are an awesome guitarist! I thought the Joyo sounded better!
Holy shit man, the joyo sounded damn good with your playing
Great Review! Your review actually made me order one, and also the Vintage Phase, from in another review (Into The Blues); another fine sounding pedal (MXR Phase 90 clone). Your happiness and surprise upon hearing and then favoring the sound of the VO actually made me topple laughing with my spilling coffee!! Thanks...
Thanks for uploading. Just bought one after watching this. The fun is arriving tomorrow.
TS9 a bit creamier and the Joyo a bit grittier. Great side by side demo - very nicely done man.
xr650r01 03:40 yes. I agree. The Ibanez has more midds.
The Joyo is a clone of the 808 thats why there is a sound difference when compared to the ts9
Good review, and was nice to hear your shock especially because you hadn't owned the pedal for long!!
Nice playing and it was enjoyable listening to your insights. I just bought one of these!
I just bought one - it rocks. Never had a tube screamer but I've had others and I like this one best. 29 buck new- can't beat that!
great demo! I have had a joyo vintage overdrive for a year now and also own their ultimate drive !
Hi, Ben... I removed the TS9 from my board. Yes. But I didn't replace it with the Joyo. I've got the Joyo... Great vintage tone
Hey there! Greetings from El Salvador. your review of this pedal convinced me of getting one. I got it last thursday and I tried it with low volume (neighbors) I couldn´t try it as I wanted. My friend tried it in a gig last night and, oh my, Thnks for your excellent review
Great points about hollowbodies and the feel, that is so true
Solid demo - thanks!
dude I love the way you play
MrShnoobtastic thanks! :)
Very nice video man, I like the quality of Joyo pedals and I'm going to build a pedalboard of these someday!
I like the Joyo more too. My borderline infringement TS clone is a Deltalab, works fine also. But you made me a believer in the Caveman, costs a little more than a TS9 and way less than the TS808 reissue. After hearing you rave about it and seeing what it does, I expected it to cost more.

Gracias

Awesome playing, Gino. I just ordered my Joyo as a result, and will probably stack with a Bad Monkey just to add a bit of whine to the mix.
Great demo!
Very nice playing Gino!
Great comparison video. Thank you!! I'll be buying the Joyo.
great great playing, love it so much, sounds like a master seriously. nice pedals too. thanks
Digging the Joyo over the TS9. Though I've never been a fan of the TS9 pedal to begin with so, it's nice that the Joyo is more transparent sounding.
Thanks, best comparsion of theese pedals! :) Buying Joyo 3:-)

oh man, diggin the Joyo. Tasty licks too bruv, killin it

"This things a bastard!" Love it!!
I too have the Joyo and it definitely kicks ass!! BTW I just noticed your name...You were great at the KOTB. Shoulda won that thing!
just got one today for $30 and man, this will never leave my guitar bag! sounds amazing!
ahmed rashed So you're never going to use it?
haha no I meant the opposite, always on my board now
ahmed rashed You got a joyo or a tubescreamer?
joyo
Similar doesn't mean the same. I use the TS9 but have been seriously looking at Joyo's lineup. Great vid, thanks.
That is a beautiful freaking tone
I own the Joyo vintage OD, the thing also records very well. Can not beat it for the bucks. Professional for over 50 years. Los Angeles
Great pedal. Nice demo. I have one of these. I love OD pedals. I have a Joyo Hot Plexi on the way right now. Joyo makes good stuff.
Amazing! $50 vs $180. Why would I part with an extra NZ $130?
very nice review bro! i have the joyo vintage OD..freakin cheap delicious pedal
Crazy how decent the joyo pedals sounds. Its even green.
TS-9 for vintage single coils, single note, and texas blues.

Holy sh*t! The way you play is amazing!
Just bought the joyo, also own the voodoo fuzz.. Jeez, great pedals, for under £30 you can't go wrong.
Joyo's Vintage Overdrive is $30 on Ebay, around $100 less than their Ibanez counterparts (also on Ebay). It's a no-brainer! Sweet review broku, very helpful/10
How was the noise when you weren't playing?
joyo is more brighter and clearer lol
joyo all the way... chinese ppl are smart the copy it 100% hahaha

Hey! Good tone is good tone. I cant tell through the interwebs and no one else can either. But 40 bucks I can tell it's worth trying.
cool demo
+Bebe Na Vole bebenavole.bandcamp.com/album/time-of-great-depression
Is the power supply for Joyo pedal same as any Boss Pedal ? or it has different polarity cable like Proco RAT2?
nice chops man - and i recognize your voice too ....are you penn ? or teller ???
Ordering joyo
the joyo has slightly more gain so to match them even better, take the joyo down "an hour" from the TS. its just where the gain lays on the pot: say if you set the TS to 11:00 set your joyo to 10;00 (this is the case at least with my joyo)
found one for $30.. cant wait to try it.
nice phrasing man!
2:30 at this moment I was sold.
What kind of microphone do you have?
I just bought the JoYo from amazon for 28 bucks.. can't go wrong!
What do you mean by more weight on the note? Is that supposed to mean louder?
Just got a Joyo VO same as in this video. £28! A tube screamer costs more than double. Fantastic value for money here.
I have the Maxon OD808 and the Joyo, and I prefer the Joyo. The Maxon has a creamier sound to it, but I thought the Joyo has more clarity.
J Ketterman is the Joyo a clone of the TS9 or the 808?
The high end and presence of the joyo is my crackly and rough... (frying sound) - great for aging ears to hear the detail again. (d'oh!) the Ibanez is just smoother. But I found a few Joyos for $25 on eBay... and JHS modifies them... so it could be fun.

Onionbagel hell yeah!
bought the joyo it'll be here in 7 days the volume boost will be just what i need ;) solo time!!!
I think Joyo makes amazing pedals for the price. BTW you can get them for $30 all day on Ebay.
I've had both, and the Joyo, in spite of being a great pedal. didn't come close to performing as well as the TS9 as a dirty booster in my amp.
what's the name of the song that riff at the end
The joyo sounds awesome
nice .. very usefull
Does anyone know if this is the same as the FAME Tube Steamer sold on Musicstore??
I can´t believe this! Joyo it´s incredible!
What can I get that is similar to the big muff?
Still using Joyo? With Any live clips?
Agree the joyo seems quite interesting...
omg!!!! I'm reeeeeeeeeeally interested in these joyo pedals. To be honest, I liked ibanez TS more, but just a little more- However, the price difference between them is HUGE! so thumbs up to JOYO VO :)
The joyo sounds killer!
