- We show you how to use a Tesla to J1772 adapter to charge on public networks like Chargepoint, EVGo, Electrify America (Not CCS), Chargeway, EV Connect, Shell Recharge, SemaConnect, hotels, at home, and more. Included in the video is how to connect, charging rate, cost for 1 hour, and a special tip for disconnecting the J1772 adapter at the end of your charging session. We recommend using the PlugShare app to find chargers of all kinds and locations. Shown is a Tesla Model Y Performance, but can be used on all Teslas.

At my job we have 4 of these ChargePoint and each has 2 ports per. Nobody uses them- in fact in the last 3 years I think 2 people have used it and it’s FREE. I work 15 walking to work and planning to get a Tesla M3 and charge for free
Very nice! Enjoy your car.
Picked up my 2024 MYLR yesterday and just subsribed to the channel. Great tips~ succinct and clear instruction!
Awesome! Thank you! Enjoy your new Tesla! Glad to have you.
THANK YOU for this video! Now that i know about the Plugshare App. I see several chargers in my area that i wasn't aware about! Time to order some adapters so I'm better prepared for the different style connectors!
You’re welcome, I’m glad it helped. Thank you for watching!
We have free Volta level 2 chargers at shopping areas and movie theaters here in Texas that are great too. Very reliable. 👍🏻
Very nice. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this video. I just brought home my Tesla Model 3 on Monday. This was very helpful!
I am really glad this helped. Thank you for watching!
Did it come with the adapter as well when you purchased your Tesla? I ordered a Tesla and am just making sure I don’t need to buy an adapter before hand. Thx!
Thanks for this video! Learned a lot. Subscribed! 👍🏽🙏🏽
Thanks for the sub! Awesome to hear. Thanks
Thanks for the vid! Very well done! Living in Boise, I have 3 routes I can take to Las Vegas (I15 thru Salt Lake, US93 thru Ely/Lund, and US95 thru Winnemucca). CCS/J1772 charging lets me use the shorter US93 route as I can charge in Ely and Alamo NV.
Thank you for watching! (and subscribing?) :)
I should have watch this video before i goes to chargepoint. I pulled out and didnt realized the J1722 Adapter still attached to my Model y.
Thank you 7:53
You are welcome! Thanks for watching!
Great video, thank you, just subbed btw and please keep the videos coming.
Thank you, that means a lot!
Thank you sir ❤
Informative, thank you.
Thanks. That means a lot.
Good vid. There are similar chargepoint stations in a couple of the spots in my parking garage at work. Works out perfectly for me, as I have about a 72 mile commute and at interstate speeds I use about 50% of the battery on the trip. After about 3.5-3.75 hours I've gotten back everything I used on the trip and it only costs $1/hr, so about $3.75 typically. As long as I get out there for lunch to move the car, otherwise after the 4 hour mark the price goes up to $3.50/hr. The only weird thing is that after I authorize to get started, the station just clicks for a good minute or so before finally unlocking the nozzle.
Thank you. And thanks for sharing your experiences here!
Well done! New subscriber
That means a lot. Thank you very much! Welcome.
I have a Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid and a level 2 J1772 at my house... going to be adding a Tesla soon, thinking with this adapter I don't necessarily need a new charging unit (but will probably still add the Tesla mobile charger for good measure.) Looks like there's no real downside, apart from being a tad slower. Great video!
Thanks for watching and kind words. Yes this adapter will work fine with your current L2 J1772 at your house. On the flip side, there is an adapter made by Lectron that turns the Tesla connector into a J1772 if needed.
Thanks but can you use a dedicated 220 outlet at. Homesfor to charge your telsa
Great video. We are flying to south Florida in a couple weeks and I just rented my first Tesla model 3 from Hertz. I’m a Chevy bolt owner, so I know the j1772 system. I’m interested to know if the rental car still has the adapter. Again, great job.
Hey a fellow Bolt owner, we’ve owned 2. Yes our Hertz rental came with a J1772 adapter, but honestly you’ll only use it at hotels. Supercharging is everywhere and the NAV tells you exactly when and where, just put in your destination. Thanks for watching!
lol wow really abc .. im a sales man. it was funny
At my friend’s house, there is an universal home level 2 charger (Siemens brand/ for his EV Nissan Leaf). Am I able to use his home charger for my Tesla model Y with the supplied J1772? Thank you for your educational video.
Yes that will work nicely! Thanks for watching.
@@TeslaTipsTrips. Thank you so much for your kind and prompt knowledge sharing. 👍👍👏👏
does anyone konw the seguma J1772 adapter?
I have an early TYPE 1 tethered HOME charger (for Nissan Leaf), will this J1772 adapter be suitable HOME CHARGING for a Model 3 ? Thanks.
If your charger has a J1772 plug, yes this adapter will work. Thanks for watching
Many Thanks.@@TeslaTipsTrips
When you pull it out, cant you just hit unlock charge port on the charging screen so the adapter comes out easier?
The button on the handle does the same thing when you are finished charging, it's still tricky for new users.
Any chance you can do a little more in depth in the unplugging. My j1772 got stuck
There’s a pull release in the trunk, left side, kinda hidden.
Yea I found that in your video. But can you show how to use the adapter with a ChargePoint and remove it without having it get stuck :-) you went pretty quick in this video. 😊
From your display, charge rate was 30 amps but also limited to 30 amps (30/30). Was that limit set by the vehicle or the charger? I know my level 2 charger at home will do 48 amps but I limit to 32 because the cable runs a little warm at max.
One other question. Is it even possible to leave the adapter on and still properly return the cable to the charger?
The car and charger decide the rate at the handshake communication. The user would have to reduce it afterwards. Thanks for watching.
In the case of Charge Point, no. Others, yes, so it’s just a good thing to remember.
"cable runs a little warm" lol antiscience. It's fine to run it at 48A.
@@Getitstraightyo and I always thought that power lost to heat in a cable run is "exactly" science. Just because the Tesla might be good with 48A, doesn't mean everything else is.
Will this damage the battery? Does it matter whicb model or year tesla you have?
It will not damage the battery. This adapter comes with every Tesla and is just like home charging. Every Tesla can do this. Thanks for watching!
What’s to keep someone from taking out your charger while you are in Starbucks and stealing your adapter. Will the cord only come out if the car senses you (with the key aka phone)
Adapter is locked to the car.
not finding this adapter on hertz rental model 3
It should be there. In the square Tesla bag. Maybe in the sub-truck.
Santa Clarita
Yup
@@TeslaTipsTrips Did you find free charging around SCV?
Thanks for the content, very helpful.
i suggest someone who know the laws well should investigate and make a class action lawsuit on these EV Charge companies! there have been a lot of BS against EV car drivers/owners charging their cars going on!
Uhm…huh?
@@TeslaTipsTripsyou delete my post to tell ALL THE TRUTH!!
Dang it I feel so dumb I bought that adapter and went to Walmart and couldn't figure it out when I. Needed to just go back to the charge point....
I think you need a CCS adapter for Walmart (Electrify America) I have videos about that also 😀thanks for watching!
@@TeslaTipsTrips Does Tesla provide that adapter as well?
