8:30 is just ridiculous. They know someone has fallen overboard, they can't see where he is, and they are powering over the waves and smacking down potentially right on top of him. No way they could have seen him if he was right in front of them. Gave me chills just watching it.
Highly advised for anyone navigating Haulover to watch that. Rule #1: keep your bow above the water, especially if you have an open bow. Rule #2: make sure your boat is suitable for the current conditions. Bigger waves = bigger boat. Rule #3: "lake boats" aren't made for the ocean. Lake boats have shallow draft and downturned bows. Stay in the harbor with lake boats. Rule #4: if you take even one wave over the bow, turn around and go back in. With each wave you're getting heavier and sinking deeper, which means the next wave will dump even more water inside your boat. It's a downward spiral, then it's too late. Rule #5: secure all passengers before entering rough water. Rule #6: no passengers in open bow in rough water (judgement call, based on size of vessel vs size of waves). Rule #7: wearing floatation devices in rough water highly advised, kids especially. At the very least have them handy, and in sufficient numbers for all passengers.
Handy isn’t good enough in turbulent waters. As you know disaster can happen in a second, and then it’s too late. Especially when you have kids with you. If they land in rough water even with a PFD they still need an adult in there with them.
Close to losing their life? She appears to be quite capable and comfortable in the water and doesn't seem to be in any trouble at all, just like swimming in a fast river it looks way worse than it is if you are comfortable in water and a decent swimmer you know that all you need to do is relax, float, and go with it, if i fell into water holding my phone I'd also be trying to stop it getting destroyed, unless I needed to ditch the phone to swim harder of course, which is probably exactly what that girl was thinking too.

They are also breaking Florida law. There's the registration number and the video. Time for a ticket! In Florida, passengers 6 years of age and under are required to wear a Coast Guard-approved, Type I, II or III life jacket while on board any boat that is under 26 feet in length, while the boat is underway.
@@gowithgid3274 It's 12 here in Australia and on a crossing of a nominated bar (of which there are about 30 in the country) every soul on board is required to wear one. That wasn't done lightly, we had a couple of tragedies in the 80s with multiple deaths from idiots in small boats on bars. In reality tho it should simply be common sense. I own an auto inflating PFD that weighs almost nothing, is so small you don't know you have it on and cost me under 80 bucks. I wear it almost all the time on small craft.

I’m on the ocean every day for around 40 years now ( with some time off for good behavior) but I’ve never seen such incompetence in boat handling in my life. No life jackets are asking to drown as well and once overboard the other boats can’t see a swimmer if they are lucky enough to be able to swim after some of these washovers.
Thats probably becuase you're around your own, Sailors. Lots of these cats drive down south rent a boat for the weekend, invite friends and without any regard to the "Rules of the Road", let alone the respect for the power the Ocean has.
@@Clarkem1 you’re right about that I think. I know I went to the Caribbean a few times and rented a 40 foot catamaran and took off with my family on it. They didn’t have any idea how much I know about Boat handling fortunately since that’s what I do everything was fine, but I could’ve been a rank amateur and they would not have known. It’s amazing to have half $1 million worth of boat in your hands just on a signature. there’s trust, and then there’s just plain crazy. I think it falls in the latter category
Oh my!!! The one boat who turned around!!!! I thought he was going to slam on top of the man overboard!!! He should have stopped and waited to spot the man before moving the boat.
In my experience, the time to put life preservers on small children is not at the dock but wait until you're in heavy waves and the bow of the boat is submarining thru the waves. Make sure all of the adults have had a few beers and just for fun overload the vessel and plow into the waves as fast as you can to insure the maximum amount of water washes over the bow.
What to do in these situations: 1. Get the bow up! Move passengers to the stern. 2. Use the power from engine to lift the bow. 3. Tilt the engines and adjust trimflaps to get more bow lift. And the most important, USE LIFEJACKETS AT OPEN SEA
Check the weather first: better to not to go out if it's not good weather. Ensure that everyone has jacket Ensure that everyone is NOT standing when such waves are crossed and that everyone has solid grip to hold If your boat is too small, don't go out, what's the fun in such roller coaster? Boat is a joy, not a pain!
I have grown on the water. The way these captains have everyone in the front of the boat and trimmed with the bow already nearly in the water is so upsetting, especially on some of the smaller boats. Those little boston whalers and carolina skiffs can do some amazing things, but you have to know what you are doing and somewhere like this is the wrong place to learn
I'm new to boating. I've taken boater safety courses but nothing really discusses much about what to do in situations like these. I'm trying to watch these videos for educational purposes. Could you please explain, aside from not having that much weight in the front of the boat, what could be done to prevent or mitigate this from happening?
There's a reason most the boats sold in Washington State where I live are closed bow. Huge waves of 45-50 degree water rushing into the boat hits different 😂

Take one open bow boat, trim the outboard nose down, add lots of people without life vests to the nose and then just go for it. If you get into trouble, circle in the worst waves. Great recipe.
@@avigator Especial considering they’re all children and one adult, the driver of the boat KNOWS what’s likely to happen when they hit the waves, he doesn’t insist of PDFs for the kids, and even when the kids are screaming and crying he continues to go for it even though the father/adult is telling him to stop and someone else calls him a son-of-a-bitch. Having been in boats and on the water(North Atlantic) in small boats most of my life I'm appalled at the incompetence, lack of respect of the water, and uncaring attitude for passengers, on the part of the skippers. If they insist on showing how bad they are at boat handling they should at least put on a PFD. even if they are drunk.
Especially if they're drunk. If you smoke pot instead, you might get there slower but it's not nearly as bad as alcohol in many ways. Alcohol really screws up the mind, vision and balance way more than marijuana. (Assuming you don't overdo it.)
Totally agree but when you can get a boat licence for $34.95 in Florida, with all the questions and answers given and have unlimited attempts at getting the answers right online(when you can get a mate to answer the questions) you have a recipe for ignorance and disaster. The Licence requirements are a total joke.

I grew up around the ocean and having almost drowned on 2 occasions, once as a kid and second caught in a rip tide, I have the greatest respect for water, especially waves and inlets. Even as a stronger swimmer you have to respect the ocean. Being in a boat and having no respect for the ocean is a recipe for disaster.
I was caught in a rip tide once. Thought it was the end and luckily as a strong swimmer knew to let it take me where it would and swim with it. Wound up other side of the sand bar hundreds of yards away....in the mud flats and sand spurs....and made it back to where I started out. The ocean is nothing to mess with. Was 17 at the time and am 58 today. IF I go to the beach I check the tides and make my trips based on that. Period.

I've spent years as an ocean tour guide in large rigid hull inflatables on the coast. It amazes me that some of these boats are clearly expensive, and yet the operators don't know how to run them and are clearly put their passengers lives at risk. Either they don't have to take a safe boating course or are too arrogant to take one. It's not just the risk of swamping or having a passenger in the water without a life jacket, it's the damage you can do to someone especially if they are on the bow of the boat when a wave tosses them into the air. There are plenty of hard things to land on, like handlebars and the deck itself, or even landing hard on your tailbone or back. To put anyone in the front section of a small boat in high frequency waves is incredibly irresponsible... you can see the slingshot coming from a mile away. Also the happy faces turn to fear very quickly after the first dunking. Amazing video and very educational. Anyone travelling through that canal to the open sea should have to watch this video before being allowed to do so.
One of the constants in life that I have noticed is that the more money a person has, the less common sense they have. I think it has to do with being hyper focused on whatever made them successful, and that ego transferring to things they don't know as well. Plus, money equals power and a twisted sort of respect from others, leading to "yes man" syndrome. They in effect never think they are wrong about anything, ever.
Most of these idiots don't realize that you've got to keep the bow of the boat pointed toward the sky in these Rough Waters you can't just idle through the big waves! You've got to use the boats power properly and take each wave as it comes.
It's unbelievable. PFDs are a must. Can't believe almost no one was wearing them. I don't care if you're Michael Phelps or Poseidon himself, wear a PFD. Pretty hard to swim if you are unconscious, have broken ribs, or anything else, much less is such gnarly water.
In my home state, you would be facing heavy fines for anyone under 18 not wearing a PFD on a boat, and there’s always a patrol boat checking to make sure they do!

Enjoy your work! Question: why do small craft have bows that dip downward? It looks cool when they are travelling at the proper angle in calm water, but makes them dangerous in big waves. The bow is angled to dig into the wave and break water over the top. It would seem logical that they have higher bows. But maybe that is like wearing your pants too high. Looks is everything. One thing you demonstrate well, pay close attention to small craft warnings!

I've lived in Calabash, NC and currently live in Panama City Beach, FL, and have fished and owned boats in both places, I know how rough inlet mouths can get, and I can tell you this: The problem is not the boats but the captains. If you're too ignorant, too drunk, too full of pride, or just too bloody stupid to realize that, when you're in a small boat - especially an open boat - and the head seas get that bad it's time to make a change of plans and stay in the bay, ESPECIALLY when you're hauling kids, you have no business with a boat. For All boat owners who don’t already know….. (I Have had boats now for 56 yrs and navigated the world’s most treacherous waters) in a following sea (stuffing sea conditions) to prevent stuffing and possibly sinking pay Attention to the following. Please note this is Not a 100% in depth look at stuffing but enough to reduce your chances by 90%. 1. Adjust trim tabs all the way up… to give bow lift. 2. If you have outboards trim them right out (not so much to make it Cavitate). This will lighten the bow by up to 50%. 3. If it’s smaller boat put all passengers or weight into the middle & back of the boat. 4. Keeping the bow up and light will eliminate 90% of all stuffing. 5. If you have dual engines use the left of right engine to correct the “ swerve “ when coming down or surfing a wave as the steering won’t do it properly or quickly enough if rocks or jetties are nearby. 6. Keep eye on wave behind coming up and use power going forward to keep wash from coming over the back of the boat and sinking it. 7. Remain vigilant to in front and behind the boat firstly then sides. 8. Never turn so as to put the boat in a position to be hit from the side by a wave, look and time your turn right and quickly as safe to do so. 9. Other than ships etc always hit waves dead on straight and with firm constant power to help avoid being flipped over on your back. This is not just my opinion, it’s fact. Happy Boating. Dave.

Excellent boating advice
Rule #8 Don't overload your vessel.
Just because 10 people want in the boat does not mean the boat is suitable for.10 people.
Sounds reasonable. The thing is that most people aren't.
SO THE BLACK PEOPLE HAD A LAKE BOAT! LET'S KEEP IT REAL!!! LOL
Handy isn’t good enough in turbulent waters. As you know disaster can happen in a second, and then it’s too late. Especially when you have kids with you. If they land in rough water even with a PFD they still need an adult in there with them.

They are also breaking Florida law. There's the registration number and the video. Time for a ticket! In Florida, passengers 6 years of age and under are required to wear a Coast Guard-approved, Type I, II or III life jacket while on board any boat that is under 26 feet in length, while the boat is underway.
Most the adults wouldn't stand a chance either, especially wearing normal clothes and shoes.

I’m on the ocean every day for around 40 years now ( with some time off for good behavior) but I’ve never seen such incompetence in boat handling in my life.

+1 to your comment. it's a more money than brains/ more pride than sense scenario.
One of the constants in life that I have noticed is that the more money a person has, the less common sense they have. Plus, money equals power and a twisted sort of respect from others, leading to "yes man" syndrome. They in effect never think they are wrong about anything, ever.

Dave.

I’m so shocked about the behaviours and skills of these skippers. They all should get withdrawn the license to ride any boat. No life jackets, no understanding at all of the sea, waves and the dynamic, not even basic skills to ride a boat at all… but the worst thing is how some of them handle kids… they really belong in jail for being so in responsible
@@sc29607 They belong on the bottom of the ocean!
Its a Florida thing.. common sense goes out the water, most of these boat owners don't have a clue nor any training on forecast/weather or tides.

rentals..... perfect!
I have a boat and love to hear all the “experts” telling, more throttle, less throttle, take the waves at an angle. My experience is when the waves are huge and don’t match your boats pitch whatever you might be screwed. I’ve practiced on big waves and sometimes you just never know. One thing you can control is wearing a life jacket.
That’s true but the best advice I could give would be if you have a lake boat play with it on the lake instead of trying to go offshore boats are designed with different environments in mind
And if there is ever any doubt of the water conditions, keep the boat well under the weight capacity. Heck, keep it under capacity anyway!
exactly-there times that no matter what plans you have made it's time to cancel and stay home
@@johnbumpus7138 what makes a "lake boat" my I/O bowrider has a better deadrise than about 1/4 the center consoles out there and a decent flare that keeps fairly dry.
Absolutely correct. What does it take to put a life jacket on BEFORE a disaster? Nothing but 99.99% of these people are just muppets.
I've never had a saltwater boat, but even on my lake runabouts, the first modification I made was to add multiple upgraded bilge pumps. You can never get rid of water too quickly!
I have a self draining boat :) No matter how much water comes in it keeps an equilibrium.
@@HaasGrotesk É verdade irmão Parabéns pelo seu barco alto drenante muito especial de primeira Elite qualidade perfeita um abraço Obrigado pelo vídeo
Agree, 1st thing i did to my new boat was install an extra bilge pump...2 bilge pumps gets the water out faster than 1
Therapy 4 looked like the only captain that had a clue!
Happy to see that young girl in the first clip was rescued. You always see her falling off the boat, but I never knew what happened. That has got to be one of the most terrifying things ever.
Great to see her priorities were to get her phone to the rescuer, before her.
@@rakov1 ohhh haha yes i just came to the comments to point that as well.
no your wrong she wanted to make sure she did not loose her cell signal ,, LOL@@JohnDoe-du3vq
@@rakov1 It's quite obvious she is a very strong swimmer and quite comfortable being in the water. I wouldn't worry about what her priorities were
That scrawny scarecrow couldn't swim one length of a back yard pool. But her phone could. @@JustHazardous
The gentlemen rescuing people in his jet ski: ♥️♥️♥️♥️ THANK YOU! You are a Guardian Angel.
I've never piloted or sailed a boat before - generally what are people doing wrong in this video? Are they going too fast or too slow for the waves?
Rich folks and their fancy boats! Always showing off no matter where you go!
It's always interesting to see the passengers faces go from smiles to total terror when the boats start taking on massive amounts of water and the clueless pilots keep plowing ahead.
Good observation. And it happens fast
I'm not a boat person. What should the pilot do when it takes water or it gets rough?
@@Mr.McWatson lift up the front of the boat by moving people to the stern and accelerate while adjusting the trim to get the bow higher while accelerating. don’t stop moving
@@mach275 so like essentially 'wheelie' the front over the waves? Wouldn't that cause the boat to launch almost vertical when hitting some bigger waves?
@@Mr.McWatson then give it less gas if it gets to vertical which idk i’d definitely see the wave coming so i can ease off the throttle as your peaking up the wave. but with the trim angle + acceleration the bow should stay up high. always check the forecast before heading out. slow down if it gets to choppy or if the boat starts to slam back down too much and quickly find a line in between the waves where you can give it gas and book it straight or sideways with the waves/chops into calmer water. if there is any lol. i’m more experienced on the river then ocean. the one time i took out the river boat into ocean i slowed down too fast and a wave came in crashing over the top of boat and filled up the boat with gallons of water. the automatic bilge pump kicked in and we all freaked out and eased back to the bay.
I was a Boarding Officer in the US Coast Guard , nothing in this video is remotely surprising
Idiots are born everyday and they seem to buy boats.
Got to work with the Coasties on drug interdiction in Caribbean when I was Navy. Cool guys!
Ha...love it
@@TOURMANBOB and they buy airplanes.

I hate when I stump my toe on a piece of furniture - but the hardness of a boat and these wonderful people being thrown around for my pleasure make up for the any pain I've had in the past.
Obviously, the boat your in plays a huge part in the success or failure of going out out.
I'm not a avid boater. For most of these crafts, what are the best practices for going out?
