A lot of parents should be getting jail time to doing that shit with their kids without life jackets. Adults can be responsible for the own stupid action but to endanger the children is criminal.
It's not just kids, what about the adults like the chick that went over the side. They probably have zero boating experience and trust the skipper, who clearly has zero boating experience or skills.
@@WavyBoats Yeah I know, freedom and stuff but there really needs to be a regulation in the US similar to here in OZ where when crossing a nominated bar PFDs are required for all. There shouldn't be a need but like here, people "hazz teh dumb" and obviously don't have the sense to take such precautions without being forced to. There also needs to be stricter regulation of existing statutes, create a wake at Black Point and you are toast but do whatever you like on the bars.
I am absolutely SHOOK @ the ignorance of not only the Captain’s but the parents letting anyone, but most importantly small children ride in these vessels with no life protection!! Should be criminal!!
It'll get you a decent fine here in Michigan at the least, and that's just on lakes. People more concerned with how they look and overestimating their abilities don't want to wear a vest because it isn't 'cool' or whatever.
8:30 is just ridiculous. They know someone has fallen overboard, they can't see where he is, and they are powering over the waves and smacking down potentially right on top of him. No way they could have seen him if he was right in front of them. Gave me chills just watching it.
Highly advised for anyone navigating Haulover to watch that. Rule #1: keep your bow above the water, especially if you have an open bow. Rule #2: make sure your boat is suitable for the current conditions. Bigger waves = bigger boat. Rule #3: "lake boats" aren't made for the ocean. Lake boats have shallow draft and downturned bows. Stay in the harbor with lake boats. Rule #4: if you take even one wave over the bow, turn around and go back in. With each wave you're getting heavier and sinking deeper, which means the next wave will dump even more water inside your boat. It's a downward spiral, then it's too late. Rule #5: secure all passengers before entering rough water. Rule #6: no passengers in open bow in rough water (judgement call, based on size of vessel vs size of waves). Rule #7: wearing floatation devices in rough water highly advised, kids especially. At the very least have them handy, and in sufficient numbers for all passengers.
Handy isn’t good enough in turbulent waters. As you know disaster can happen in a second, and then it’s too late. Especially when you have kids with you. If they land in rough water even with a PFD they still need an adult in there with them.
Close to losing their life? She appears to be quite capable and comfortable in the water and doesn't seem to be in any trouble at all, just like swimming in a fast river it looks way worse than it is if you are comfortable in water and a decent swimmer you know that all you need to do is relax, float, and go with it, if i fell into water holding my phone I'd also be trying to stop it getting destroyed, unless I needed to ditch the phone to swim harder of course, which is probably exactly what that girl was thinking too.
35 year's coastguard This still gives me the shivers and a bit of anger to see such fools putting their friends and family's lives in dangerous situations why can't we learn 😢
100% correct. Lunacy powring out at speed, lunacy allowing a passenger to lay on the foredeck in those waves and dare I say it not a sign of anyone wearing any firm of buoyancy aid or life jacket. I'm will to be no "kill cord" either...
Absolutely! Some of these are straight up annoying! Let's go out at max capacity, little experience, let people ride in the front during this rough travel the list of ignorance is crazy!
They are also breaking Florida law. There's the registration number and the video. Time for a ticket! In Florida, passengers 6 years of age and under are required to wear a Coast Guard-approved, Type I, II or III life jacket while on board any boat that is under 26 feet in length, while the boat is underway.
@@gowithgid3274 It's 12 here in Australia and on a crossing of a nominated bar (of which there are about 30 in the country) every soul on board is required to wear one. That wasn't done lightly, we had a couple of tragedies in the 80s with multiple deaths from idiots in small boats on bars. In reality tho it should simply be common sense. I own an auto inflating PFD that weighs almost nothing, is so small you don't know you have it on and cost me under 80 bucks. I wear it almost all the time on small craft.
I’m on the ocean every day for around 40 years now ( with some time off for good behavior) but I’ve never seen such incompetence in boat handling in my life. No life jackets are asking to drown as well and once overboard the other boats can’t see a swimmer if they are lucky enough to be able to swim after some of these washovers.
Thats probably becuase you're around your own, Sailors. Lots of these cats drive down south rent a boat for the weekend, invite friends and without any regard to the "Rules of the Road", let alone the respect for the power the Ocean has.
@@CMarkem you’re right about that I think. I know I went to the Caribbean a few times and rented a 40 foot catamaran and took off with my family on it. They didn’t have any idea how much I know about Boat handling fortunately since that’s what I do everything was fine, but I could’ve been a rank amateur and they would not have known. It’s amazing to have half $1 million worth of boat in your hands just on a signature. there’s trust, and then there’s just plain crazy. I think it falls in the latter category
Oh my!!! The one boat who turned around!!!! I thought he was going to slam on top of the man overboard!!! He should have stopped and waited to spot the man before moving the boat.
What to do in these situations: 1. Get the bow up! Move passengers to the stern. 2. Use the power from engine to lift the bow. 3. Tilt the engines and adjust trimflaps to get more bow lift. And the most important, USE LIFEJACKETS AT OPEN SEA
Check the weather first: better to not to go out if it's not good weather. Ensure that everyone has jacket Ensure that everyone is NOT standing when such waves are crossed and that everyone has solid grip to hold If your boat is too small, don't go out, what's the fun in such roller coaster? Boat is a joy, not a pain!
I have grown on the water. The way these captains have everyone in the front of the boat and trimmed with the bow already nearly in the water is so upsetting, especially on some of the smaller boats. Those little boston whalers and carolina skiffs can do some amazing things, but you have to know what you are doing and somewhere like this is the wrong place to learn
I'm new to boating. I've taken boater safety courses but nothing really discusses much about what to do in situations like these. I'm trying to watch these videos for educational purposes. Could you please explain, aside from not having that much weight in the front of the boat, what could be done to prevent or mitigate this from happening?
I grew up around the ocean and having almost drowned on 2 occasions, once as a kid and second caught in a rip tide, I have the greatest respect for water, especially waves and inlets. Even as a stronger swimmer you have to respect the ocean. Being in a boat and having no respect for the ocean is a recipe for disaster.
I was caught in a rip tide once. Thought it was the end and luckily as a strong swimmer knew to let it take me where it would and swim with it. Wound up other side of the sand bar hundreds of yards away....in the mud flats and sand spurs....and made it back to where I started out. The ocean is nothing to mess with. Was 17 at the time and am 58 today. IF I go to the beach I check the tides and make my trips based on that. Period.
@@sevinnine6348 I was in an almost identical situation many years ago when I was 15 - 16, surfing off the coast of Cornwall, UK I was caught in a rip tide just off the Camel estuary and ended up the other side of a large sandbar so called the "Doombar" by locals as it was regularly the doom of many vessels through the centuries. Eventually I got back to where I started but man was it scary.
In my experience, the time to put life preservers on small children is not at the dock but wait until you're in heavy waves and the bow of the boat is submarining thru the waves. Make sure all of the adults have had a few beers and just for fun overload the vessel and plow into the waves as fast as you can to insure the maximum amount of water washes over the bow.
To be fair I was a vastly stronger swimmer in my youth than I am now. I can't believe they took their dog on the boat without a life vest... freaking monsters

I'll never understand how people can be smart enough to be able to make the kind of money to afford this stuff, yet be so totally stupid when it comes to things like safety.

Having been in boats and on the water(North Atlantic) in small boats most of my life I'm appalled at the incompetence, lack of respect of the water, and uncaring attitude for passengers, on the part of the skippers. If they insist on showing how bad they are at boat handling they should at least put on a PFD. even if they are drunk.
Especially if they're drunk. If you smoke pot instead, you might get there slower but it's not nearly as bad as alcohol in many ways. Alcohol really screws up the mind, vision and balance way more than marijuana. (Assuming you don't overdo it.)
Totally agree but when you can get a boat licence for $34.95 in Florida, with all the questions and answers given and have unlimited attempts at getting the answers right online(when you can get a mate to answer the questions) you have a recipe for ignorance and disaster. The Licence requirements are a total joke.
@@EnglishLawyer Online "questionaires" regarding to licenses is so stupid. It only really weeds out the mentally-subnormal because anyone with half a brain would cheat.
It's unbelievable. PFDs are a must. Can't believe almost no one was wearing them. I don't care if you're Michael Phelps or Poseidon himself, wear a PFD. Pretty hard to swim if you are unconscious, have broken ribs, or anything else, much less is such gnarly water.
In my home state, you would be facing heavy fines for anyone under 18 not wearing a PFD on a boat, and there’s always a patrol boat checking to make sure they do!
I've spent years as an ocean tour guide in large rigid hull inflatables on the coast. It amazes me that some of these boats are clearly expensive, and yet the operators don't know how to run them and are clearly put their passengers lives at risk. Either they don't have to take a safe boating course or are too arrogant to take one. It's not just the risk of swamping or having a passenger in the water without a life jacket, it's the damage you can do to someone especially if they are on the bow of the boat when a wave tosses them into the air. There are plenty of hard things to land on, like handlebars and the deck itself, or even landing hard on your tailbone or back. To put anyone in the front section of a small boat in high frequency waves is incredibly irresponsible... you can see the slingshot coming from a mile away. Also the happy faces turn to fear very quickly after the first dunking. Amazing video and very educational. Anyone travelling through that canal to the open sea should have to watch this video before being allowed to do so.
One of the constants in life that I have noticed is that the more money a person has, the less common sense they have. I think it has to do with being hyper focused on whatever made them successful, and that ego transferring to things they don't know as well. Plus, money equals power and a twisted sort of respect from others, leading to "yes man" syndrome. They in effect never think they are wrong about anything, ever.
It actually hurt's to see so much bad seamanship, not only the wrongdooers but you often see big yachts going in at high speed pushing up big waves and don"t care what they do to the other boats!
I grew up boating with my parents and I love it. But all of college I never went out with friends. I didn’t want to be trapped on a boat with an unsafe driver. This vid is exactly why.
Same, grew up boating with my parents and even had my own boat by the time I was 12! (A little flat bottom boat for going crabbing in the marshlands). I went out on a lake once with friends who rented a boat. I almost had a heart attack with all the ignorant and DANGEROUS things they were doing. Never again.
Grew up on a beach. could swim when I was three, surf when I was five, learned to drive a boat when I was 14. I was junior surf lifesaver, a surf life saver, a state champion surf lifesaver. By the time I wa 16 I was training to driving rigid hull inflatable surf rescue boats, at 18 I was racing them in Surf Lifesaving competition at a national level. A totally great video on what not to do on a boat. Recently seen a body recovery from the beach side there. I've lived in Calabash, NC and currently live in Panama City Beach, FL, and have fished and owned boats in both places, I know how rough inlet mouths can get, and I can tell you this: The problem is not the boats but the captains. If you're too ignorant, too drunk, too full of pride, or just too bloody stupid to realize that, when you're in a small boat - especially an open boat - and the head seas get that bad it's time to make a change of plans and stay in the bay, ESPECIALLY when you're hauling kids, you have no business with a boat. I’m so shocked about the behaviours and skills of these skippers. They all should get withdrawn the license to ride any boat. I’m stunned by the judgement of these “captains”. No matter who is on board, the captain is responsible for the life and safety of everyone in their charge.
i may be wrong, but i would just pull the throttle all the way back. kick it in gear to keep position as to not take one broadside , but just let the current do the job. seems like it hauls ass through there. i never understand why people think full throttle is the answer to a panic-driven situation. the skippers dont like seeing their other crewmembers get airborn and immediately think "gotta get away from the dangerous chop" lol just sloooowwwww down.

This is florida... people don't think down here lol. Whether they are boating, driving cars, or flying their planes... the brains aren't working at full capacity here
Irresponsible parenting for sure!! All it takes is for one of those kids to cracked her skull open and they could go under the water and die without being found.
After watching people do dumb things at haulover, I have come to the following conclusion. There is quite a few people with a lot more money than brains.
My pops was a quartermaster in the navy, spent tons of times in boats with him, never really understood why or how good he was at navigating waves like this till I watched this channel lol 😅😂
We love watching your videos. My wife and I can't believe how people don't wear life jackets especially in those conditions. Even the kids, I always made my kids wear life jackets.
While I enjoyed this video, it was so frustrating to see children in the bow of the boats without any life jackets on! One wrong move and the kid goes overboard. As others have said already, such carelessness should be criminal.
I love these channels, but honestly I usually avoid this compilation, because I view some of those as child endangerment (and passenger endangerment 😉) more than entertainment. And several of these folks are receiving occult spinal injuries as well. Still a loyal fan of the channel but very frustrating to safe boaters.
Not just thrown overboard, but violently smacked around in the process. If a child (or an adult for that fact) gets knocked unconcious from a hitting their head while being tossed out, they could easily drown before help could get to them.
You never see anyone in a PFD in these videos, not even the kids. I’ve watched 100s of them and could count on two fingers how many times I’ve seen a child in a PFD. And they love to send the kids up front every time, at the worst time. Sadly, it’ll probably take the death of a kid before anything changes. I live on the ocean and you’d NEVER see kids without one on, and if you did everyone around would say something.
Happy to see that young girl in the first clip was rescued. You always see her falling off the boat, but I never knew what happened. That has got to be one of the most terrifying things ever.
For all those that think you just gotta speed up, you're just as daft as these fools in the video. Boat length, engine capabilities, wave height and distance between troughs all need to be considered continuously. Slowing down can be the answer in many cases. Know your boats capabilities, how to trim and when, and know when to stay in port.
Hit those waves at an angle and let the boat roll a little. If you notice, when they get to the turn, they stuff much less. It's those head on fools that keep sinking them.
I live near the mouth of the Columbia. I have seen everything imaginable trying to cross the bar into the pacific. Only difference is, here, the water is about 40 to 50 deg most of the year. People as a whole are stupid....
Never stay in port! The rougher it is, the more fun and challenging it is..... but you have to be sober and know what the hell you are doing. Know when to accelerate and when not to. Know when to put the weight towards the back and not all at the front, especially the big fat people. And that little 100gph bilge pump just isn't gonna pump out that 100 gallons of water before the next 100 and then the next 100. That old dude didn't want to put his beer down long enough to pick his wife up off the deck did he lol.
Totally, And some days you're just gonna eat it No matter what you do. My inlet is Ponce nowhere near this rough. But we have disappearing island which is different type of hazzard People just want to get drunk and get in a fight and then all of the sudden a day at the beach will break out.( Terrifying)
Also is there a better spot in the channel to cross. You think they would find the point of least resistance. It’s like all the dummies trying to prove how little they know about boating and the ocean. I see plenty of people with expensive boats with no knowledge of how to operate them.
I hate when I stump my toe on a piece of furniture - but the hardness of a boat and these wonderful people being thrown around for my pleasure make up for the any pain I've had in the past.
How foolish can people be by putting families, friends, kids and pets in such danger. There’s always tomorrow or the following weekend. I’m surprised the guy that went overboard could make it to the rocks. I’m glad everyone was able to get out of these situations okay. Hi from Oregon 🤚🏻
What you fail to realize, sir, IS THAT this is opulence at its most idiotic. To call any of these operators Captain,.. is a total disrespect for the term. These are simply people with too much money and no idea of how the Natural Universe works. In my humble opinion, Nature is thinning them out.... HA!
i don't know anything about boating but this damn near made me cry. those are little children. if they do get washed overboard - and i can't believe they aren't frightened anyway - isn't there some danger of them being got by the qroqellor? (key not working. it's the other way round!)
I'm from Florida and boat, I'm sure a lot of people that aren't from down here and aren't used to this type of thing are probably pretty freaked out. Still blows my mind being a coast guard skipper in a earlier life that these people can go out without a boating license. Life jackets should be mandatory from the moment you step on a leisure vessel. There are rules to the water and most these boaters have no idea what they are or how to comply.
%100 correct mate. In Australia for any leisure craft you must have a basic recreational skippers ticket, evey one must wear a life vest and you must carry flares. Even the kids on these boats don't have life vests, CRAZY. 🤔

My buddy from Queens fell in the water while we were fishing the horn buoy at Jones inlet here on Long Island we were in 10-15 foot swells. Doesn’t sound like much but when you fall in with Timberland boots and heavy denim shorts on it makes it much harder to negotiate the ways. I threw him a floatation device and he swam back with the fear of his in his eyes. Watching him bob up and down in the waves for a minute was intense. The power of the ocean is nothing to take light.

A lot of parents should be getting jail time to doing that shit with their kids without life jackets. Adults can be responsible for the own stupid action but to endanger the children is criminal.
We agree with you Tom. We see too many kids put in dangerous scenarios unfortunately.
It's not just kids, what about the adults like the chick that went over the side. They probably have zero boating experience and trust the skipper, who clearly has zero boating experience or skills.

Excellent boating advice
Rule #8 Don't overload your vessel.
Just because 10 people want in the boat does not mean the boat is suitable for.10 people.
Sounds reasonable. The thing is that most people aren't.

Could you please explain, aside from not having that much weight in the front of the boat, what could be done to prevent or mitigate this from happening?
Nothing like a relaxing day on the water.
Period.
A friend of mine from Maine was killed in a rip tide. Best swimmer I knew.

+1 to your comment. it's a more money than brains/ more pride than sense scenario.
One of the constants in life that I have noticed is that the more money a person has, the less common sense they have. Props to the guy on the JetSki for saving people. He should have a “throw bag” a.k.a. a throw line. We use them in whitewater kayaking/rafting.

I've never had a saltwater boat, but even on my lake runabouts, the first modification I made was to add multiple upgraded bilge pumps. You can never get rid of water too quickly!

Oh the irony when you see empty lifejackets floating away from a sinking boat
I have a boat and love to hear all the “experts” telling, more throttle, less throttle, take the waves at an angle. My experience is when the waves are huge and don’t match your boats pitch whatever you might be screwed. I’ve practiced on big waves and sometimes you just never know. One thing you can control is wearing a life jacket.
That’s true but the best advice I could give would be if you have a lake boat play with it on the lake instead of trying to go offshore boats are designed with different environments in mind
And if there is ever any doubt of the water conditions, keep the boat well under the weight capacity. Heck, keep it under capacity anyway!

i may be wrong, but i would just pull the throttle all the way back. kick it in gear to keep position as to not take one broadside , but just let the current do the job. seems like it hauls ass through there. i never understand why people think full throttle is the answer to a panic-driven situation. the skippers dont like seeing their other crewmembers get airborn and immediately think "gotta get away from the dangerous chop" lol just sloooowwwww down.

I hate when I stump my toe on a piece of furniture - but the hardness of a boat and these wonderful people being thrown around for my pleasure make up for the any pain I've had in the past.
