I was 16 years old when this came out. I was a mess. I had alcoholic parents, my sister was married and moved away, I was alone and totally wanting to be loved and to love someone. This song is amazing. Tonight, I took my wife out to celebrate our 34th wedding anniversary. I found my Amanda.

I was a professional rock drummer in the late 60's and early 70's'. I'll never forget the first time I heard them (it was 'Peace of Mind' - still my favorite) ... it was an Epic experience! Saw them live as soon as possible and was amazed at how much the concert sounded exactly like the album. To this day, they're the most 'melodically versatile and precise' band I've ever heard. ✌ ^v^

'A Man I'll Never Be" is even deeper than this song, "Foreplay/Long Time" is astounding in musicality and will rock you to the core. One man -Tom Scholz wrote and recorded the songs and guitar, keyboards etc. by himself before bringing in the singer and drummer. A true genius!

They had a lot of great songs such as "More Than A Feeling", "Peace Of Mind", "Foreplay/Long Time", "Rock & Roll Band", "Smokin'", "Don't Look Back", "A Man I'll Never Be", "Feelin' Satisfied", "We're Ready", "Amanda" etc.

I was so happy yesterday when I saw your reaction video to More Than A Feeling but I couldn't comment right away because I was watching it on my TV. I then imagined what would be your reaction like to Amanda. Lo and behold, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this reaction video, only this time I'm watching from my laptop and I would be able to comment.
This is my favorite Boston song and I first heard it in 1986, the year it was released. I was a teenager then and the song stuck in my memory forever because that was the best teenage year of my life. In 2009, when my youngest daughter was born, I named her after the song to remind myself of the beautiful memories of my favorite teenage year. Amanda will be thirteen next year and she's growing up to be a beautiful young girl. I wish you two a great and prosperous New Year 2022 and beyond. This is your friend from the Fiji Island.✌

I remember when this song was released, a LONG time after "more than a feeling", and it kinda got panned by the critics for being too much of a throwback style because it didn't fit in with the current style of music going round. But if you listen to it ignoring all of that, it's just really a great song.

    • @s.mcpherson6354

Good point. Looking back, a lot of us, (I know I did), mistook the band's unique sound for just the sound of that era. I guess you have to be pretty iconic for people to make that mistake. But yeah, I remember this album feeling out of sync with what was going on at that time, so it did feel 'old,' like they weren't growing or something. But had I listened to it more like a Rolling Stones album, (which I never minded when it sounded like a Rolling Stones album), then I suspect this would have seemed less like clinging to past success, and more like another album by a band with an iconic rock sound.

While Marianne in More Than a Feeling is based on a real person. Cousin of the writer/guitarist Tom Sholz whom he had a little crush on back in the day, AMANDA is not a real person, it was the first name that came to mind when they were needing one to fit the song lyrically and rhythmically. Other three-syllable female first names could work, but they found a winner first try and didn't even try others.
Your first two Boston reactions are written ten years apart. There are seven other songs on their first album to react to, and a handful from their second.

You have just listened to 2 of their slower, softer songs . . . . Try Smokin' or Party, or anything on the first 3 albums at first. One guy did it all. Tom Scholz an MIT graduate in electrical engineering, working at Polaroid. Wrote it, played everything, recorded/produced it, invented technology, used no computers or synthesizers. All in his basement. Brad Delp the singer laid down the vocals after.

"Boston" is not a soft-Rock band. They're a hard-Rock band that had the versatility to record a few very good slower ballads. Songs that are more characteristic of their style are: "Foreplay/Long Time", "Smokin'", "Don't Look Back", and "Cool the Engines".

Boy, I do love this song. This song was their one and only #1 hit song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the fall of 1986. I do love their follow-up to this song. We're Ready was also a Top 10 hit from the same album, Third Stage. Two awesome songs, indeed!!!

I saw Boston at WSU in 1978. They blew us away! We were awed by their sound. Brad's voice is killer. ❤

Boston was awesome. Very melodic. Too bad they only had 3 albums. They were perfectionists when it came to their albums and also rarely toured.

It seems like Amanda is his good friend, with whom he falls in love. He's afraid of losing her friendship if he crosses that line into love. If she doesn't love him back, he will feel uncomfortable, and perhaps the friendship will end.

Boston was my 1st concert at WSU in 1978. We were blown away after almost 3 hours of power and we danced and drank on campus till sunrise. I've seen many bands and Boston with Brad singing and Tom Schultz MIT genius mastering their great music. In 1977 you couldn't drive without hearing a Boston song. We had 8 track tapes and thought we were so freaking cool. lol. Before someone says you're old, I'm a young 62 yr old rocker chick. 😉❤

Boston is a band that can pull off the "Soft-Rock" love ballads with class and style. If you want to check out a different band that can pull that off too, try Marillion doing "Dry Land" live in Holland 2011. They're more prog, but the two songs could go on a romantic playlist really well. I enjoy the chemistry between you two!

Boston, is one of my favorites! Brad Delp is the lead vocalist, but unfortunately and sadly he is no longer with us because he committed suicide! I can relate to Brad because I have struggled with suicide myself! Thank you for reacting to them!

Tom Scholz is like Neal Peart in that they are the ultimate technicians. Echoing some of the other comments, if you like the emotion of this song, listen to Don't Look Back with the lyrics. You won't be disappointed.
