My wife's name is Amanda. I still remember the first time I played this song for her when we were dating, it was a very emotional moment for her. We celebrate 20 years in February.
This song was from their 3rd album (out of 6) and was actually one of their last radio hits. Tom Scholtz was Boston. He wrote the songs and played most of the instruments on the records as he created that Boston sound. He created most of the first album (sans vocals) in his basement more than a year before it was released. Once he felt the album was ready, he started shopping it around to record companies. It's hard to believe, but several big record companies passed on the record, and Boston, before the album found its way to Epic Records. The executives at Epic could not believe their luck that this album was still available. They jumped on it and released it with only a few tweaks and changes from the original. There was a ten-year gap between the first and third albums.
His voice is very ethereal is the way I think of it. It's almost like it's emanating out of the distance. What always amazes me as I've listened to every Boston song hundreds if not more times is that it is almost impossible to tell when his voice tales off and the guitar kicks in. Since I was little Boston music has been a constant, back when I was in high school and college driving home from school during breaks I'd just play the first three albums back to back and just contemplate stuff. I was lucky enough to see them in concert in the early 1990s on the side of a ski hill and they sound as good in concert as they do on the recordings. Boston one of those unique bands that sort of stands alone like a Journey, Fleetwood Mac and a few others. Can't really compare them or slot them in a certain style or genre.
Tom Sholz was an MIT engineer who designed a lot of the electronic recording gear and effects that became the signature Boston sound with all of the multi-tracked guitars. He was a perfectionist who would take years to record an Album. This song (Amanda) took SIX Years to finish. ☮💜🎶 Side note, I'm a musician and the one band my college girlfriend hated was Boston... and this song came out... her name was Amanda. I would sing this song to her and it made it even worse. 🤣
You sound like my fella! He does stuff to get a rise out of me! 😂. It keeps things spicy. I have found out that if I pretend I'm getting spicy with him that he stops quicker so I feign annoyance to keep my fella entertained and retain my sanity!
Amanda was the first Boston song I heard . I was 11 years old, (I'm 49 now lol) hanging out with my older cousin. I was immediately hooked. Their music Is incredible. The guitars, the harmonies, everything is top notch.
Tom is still alive. He and Brad had a rocky relationship. Tom was very focused and demanding with the sound he wanted for the band. Love Boston, they were the first Rock Band I got into as a young boy.
Boston's guitar work doesn't get enough elite status praise they deserve. I rank their ForeplayLong Time guitar performance as the best of all time in a song.
3rd Stage by Boston, Raised on Radio by Journey, and 5150 by Van Halen were the TOP 3 albums for the year 1986 and NONE of them had a VIDEO on MTV, showing the power of radio 5 years later after the eruption of music videos on MTV, usually dominating the charts. I started listening to Kasey Kasems TOP 40 before the advent of MTV, and never had MTV until I got my first apartment in 1991 at age 22. I really started listening to radio when I was 11 in 1979. I loved 3rd Stage by Boston, not ONE BAD TRACK on the whole album, there are days when it was on loop for me first on cassette and later on CD, could listen to it all day long.
Cant’cha Say You Believe In Me- Boston. BP this is off Third Stage which is the same album as Amanda. Great love tune and would love to see you react to this great tune! Thanks for your reaction to Amanda.
9:39 "Don't Look Back", is another iconic song by Boston. Also, "Amanda" is the song that I strategically played to get down with my first girl ever. I also learned and played the intro guitar to "More Than a Feeling", and it all worked like a charm. Until...I found out that she actually just liked ME and that she didn't actually give a f about the song or me playing guitar. At first it was such a "cool, I know the formula!!!" moment as a teenager (yeah, I'm old), to later finding out that second part ("No, dummy, she just liked YOU"), which was so surprising to me, but also so, so, so, so much cooler.
Tom Scholz taught himself to play guitar and when he became proficient and went on to build his own studio in his basement. Boston's 1st album was recorded in that home studio. He also invented the Rockman headphone amp, which gives Boston's guitars that one-of-a-kind sound. Scholz has an engineering degree from MIT and currently hold 36 patents. He also hand-build most all of Boston's amps and electronics.
BP I appreciate your understanding and broadness that you have shown in your reactions. I enjoy watching them. Keep doing what your doing. Nevermind the haters. 👍
Tom Sholz, M.I.T grad, genius, started Boston. Master guitarist, built his own amps to create his very own unique sound. He wrote most if not all of their songs. He still plays to this day and is still badass. He’s been said to be a hard guy to work with because he’s a perfectionist and expects perfection from everyone.
Hey BP, there’s a lot to unpack with Boston. If I remember correctly it was like 10 years between their last album and Third Stage. They became basically a studio band from this point on so you probably won’t find much concert stuff out there. Anyway, it would be worth watching a biography of the band or Tom. Tom Scholtz was the primary guitarist in Boston. He was an MIT engineering student and created a pedal for their specific guitar sound. If you’ve ever heard of the portable guitar headset called the “Rockman”, he invented it. You could plug a guitar into it and use headphones. He created it based off his pedal in the 80’s if I remember correctly. I’m assuming he patented it because it was forever before another company even came out with something sounding similar. I think there is a documentary on Boston/Scholtz that I’ve seen that was really good.
It was a long time, so 10 years is believable. I remember the liner notes telling about how they picked up a recording from years ago (in the making of this album) and the tape was stuck to the reels. The liner notes to Third Stage always fascinated me as a kid, before I went to college and became an engineer.

But then tell myself nahh, he's heard that for sure. Then there you are with that song. 😮. These classics truly touched something in your soul. Those feelings are still there, the reflection has changed a bit, but I still feel this deeply. I'm sorry, I can't even finish this😢
One of my favorite songs. Brad and Tom were pure magic and I love all of Boston. Great reaction and you should see them sing this live it’s really good. Great reaction as always friend. ❤✌
please do Firehouse Love of life time another power ballad we lost the lead singer CJ snare this year on April 5th Rip CJ snare they have so many great love songs don't treat me bad when i look into your eyes reach for sky
I was in a band with my buddies who I worked with at Sears. I was lead singer and was learning bass. This is one of our songs I sang. Boston is amazing, Tom was a genius for sure. Brad Delp was one of the best singers around IMHO. Too bad we lost him too soon, a real kick in the nuts to hear he was gone.
I loved his voice, one big regret I have is not seeing them in concert before he passed away. In his suicide note part of it read "I am a lonely soul", he suffered from depression. No other voice like Brad Delp.
There are many "lonely souls" out here, myself included. I just refuse to give in to the despair. I wish he had made a different decision. It amazes me that he couldn't feel the love we had for him. I guess that's part of the mental illness of depression.
@@Hornsfan64 Thank you for the kind words. Thankfully, unlike Brad, I am not "clinically" depressed. I am mentally strong and not suicidal. I just wish I was healthier and able to do things other people take for granted. I am quite skilled at living within my abilities and finding the small joys that I can, given my physical limitations. Have a wonderful day!
BP ... I'd love to see/hear your reaction to another group from the 70's who had lots of great songs, but they were never recognized as a great group because they didn't write any of their own songs. They were called 3 Dog Night. A few songs you might like are Shambala, Never been to Spain, Joy to the World, Eli's Coming, and one my favorites Pieces of April. Give them a listen, I think you might like some of their music. And now I'm going to listen to Pieces of April since I haven't heard it in awhile.
Before Boston, Tom Scholz went to MIT and got a master's in engineering and worked for Polaroid. From there, he developed the Rockman, a guitar effects device that allowed him to create the "Boston Sound". Many other artists in the 80s used this device as well, from Def Leppard to Megadeth. On most of Boston's recordings, Tom played every single instrument in the studio, and all of the vocal harmonies are overdubs of multiple takes of Brad's voice, so as far as studio albums were concerned the band really was a duo.
Tom Scholz did not pass away. He is 77 years old now. This is one of my favorite ballads of all time. And the very last line of the song chokes me up every time I hear it, cause it's a reminder to me to tell my wife of 38+ years how much I love her. "I don't wanna wait my whole life through, to say I'm in love with you"
In 1973 country legend Don Williams also recorded a song titled "Amanda". It's a self deprecating song about a man that feels his wife deserved better than him, a lowly country singer. What makes me laugh is in the song they're in their 30s and he's singing about how old they've become. 😄

"Cool the Engines" is probably my favorite track off of Third Stage. This album came out while I was in Army basic training and CD's were relatively new on the scene. We got a one hour pass to visit the PX on base and I saw this CD on the shelf. I immediately scooped it up and it became my soundtrack for the winter of 1986-87. Fond memories. edit- I was fortunate enough to see Boston in concert late spring of 1987. Their sound on stage was pristine. I sat in the 4th row center and was legit mesmerized the entire show.
Brad Delp (RIP) had an amazing, outstanding voice, and he multi-tracked harmonies with himself which just sound fantastic - you get that "hair standing up" feeling when you hear him sing. And Tom Schotz does similar stuff with layering the guitar parts - often layers of both acoustic and electric and multiple tracks of each. That's the "Boston sound" and the two of them just made magic.
I totally get what you mean. I grew up thinking the same about rap. I thought it was all flexing and fighting. I didn’t realize there was battle rap and then there was rap. I didn’t know the poetry in the lyrics. I just didn’t know. I’m learning that it’s not all insults, drugs and women. There are truly beautiful, meaningful lyrics. There are deep messages and I’m listening. Love to you and yours. 🌸🌸🌸
You make me feel really lucky that my parents and grandparents listened to such a wide variety of music. I in turn subjected my children to a wide variety of music. I think all music is to be enjoyed and appreciated.
Tom Shcolz was the founder of Boston and created most of their music. He was an MIT educated engineer that used his genius to create new music devices to enhance the music that todays tech is based on. He created the entire first album alone in his basement. There was no band until people wanted them to tour and he had to start recruiting people capable of singing his music. Brad Delp was a phenom singer. All at a time with no voice enhancement tech.
I need to make a playlist of songs with girl's names. Off the top of my head, besides this one, Barry Manilow's "Mandy", Derek & the Dominoes "Layla", Fleetwood Mac's "Sara", Jefferson Starship's "Jane". There's probably lots more.
Tom basically was Boston, Brad Delp sang the songs and took them to outer space but Tom practically recorded and played everything in his own studio. It took him an average of 8 years to release an album but was always worth the wait
Saw Boston in ~1995 in Orlando and it was a fabulous show. Saw them again in 2015 and it was "almost" as good and better at the same time. Fill-in vocalist for the high notes didn't go over well, but hearing them again was magic.
Tom’s guitar sound was so great he came out with a guitar box called The Rockman, where you could plug your guitar into it. It could be used to sent the signal to an amp or use the headphones it came with. It sells for several hundred dollars now. This was one of their later albums, but it was about 7 years between this and their last as they were more a studio band than live band. Tom was very particular on the mix of instruments and voicing…prob because of MIT lol. He’s also still alive at 77.
The musicianship & the vocals/harmonies in Boston was the best,. At that time no other band could compare & yes it's a crime their not in the R&R Hall of Fame.
Tom Scholz (guitar) is basically the mastermind of Boston... the band leader, songwriter, composer, co-producer, etc. But their success would not have been possible without Brad Delp (lead vocals)... The original band quit after the 2nd Boston album "Don't look back" in 1978 because Scholz took way too long (8 years) to release the 3rd album 'Third Stage' in 1986. It sold very well (4x platinum) and 'Amanda' was a massive hit... but it was still not as big as the 1976 self-titled debut, which sold 10+ million copies (17x platinum in the US to date) Brad Delp left the band after '3rd stage'... and Tom Scholz carried on w/ Boston using new members . Tragically, Brad Delp took his own life in 2007. Tom Scholz has been touring as Boston and says he's working on a new album.
This song was from their third album. Tom is an MIT engineer and understands the waveforms and how they sound. He designs various foot pedals for guitars that are still being used.
Hi Black Pegasus It's really something special coming from that generation and hearing so much acceptance from your generation and newer generations that this music has not ever Not held water . The lead singer does have a unique voice and I got what you meant when you said you could imagine this being sung by fairies . He does have an angelic tone for a man.... not as much as Mitch Grassi from Pentatonix but still his voice is like a really smooth whisky going down.... if that makes sense . Thank you for your channel and appreciation for finer things in life .
BOSTON - "" Don't Look Back "" AUDIO VERSION is 6 minutes long and it's the Full Length Song another one one of their biggest Rockin' hit songs of the 1970s 🎸
Sometimes the Universe just speaks, I was dating a girl called Amanda when this came out, just out of high school, of course they nailed it and I was already a big fan of Boston, of course Amanda as well,, ahh mis spent youth, spent on down by the river wet and tanned, dang she was hawt! Reminds me of another great song! I remember us riding in my car Her body tanned and wet, down at the reservoir At night on them banks I'd lie awake And pull her close just to feel each breath she'd take Now those memories come back to haunt me They haunt me like a curse Is a dream a lie if it don't come true Or is it something worse That sends me down to the river Though I know the river is dry That sends me down to the river tonight Down to the river! Into the River we dived. If ya know ya know, both great songs and lyrics! Bostons Brad Delp what a voice!

Literally every song they made was a masterpiece. It is absolutely a crime they are not in the Hall of Fame.
What? They aren't in the Hall of Fame? That, my friend, is a travesty, a crime!,
Foreigner just got in for Gods sake !!!
It is a crime...
The rock hall of fame should be embarrassed that Boston isn’t in…pathetic !,
The Rock and Roll hall of fame is a joke.
You can’t imagine how big this song and this album was in the mid-80’s. Boston ruled with this album.
I was born in ‘92. I wish I was around. The 80s would have been my time! I’m jealous!
I remember when this tour hit Boston, they sold out like 10 shows (and i didnt go to any...oops)
Try "Cool the Engines".
I saw them on this tour in 1987 in Indy. The arena is now a parking lot, sadly.

Boston Don't look back the first album I ever bought. That's the best song!
"Don't Look Back" is my favorite song of theirs also.
No bad Boston sings! My personal favorite is Let Me Take You Home Tonight!🎤🎸🎼💋💋💋🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Bob Ross was the man! RIP remember, we don’t make mistakes just have a little accidents.
Boston = great music!!🔥🔥
You make me feel really lucky that my parents and grandparents listened to such a wide variety of music. I in turn subjected my children to a wide variety of music. I think all music is to be enjoyed and appreciated.
This was a comeback album of sorts as there had been no Boston album in 8 years. This was a great time. So many great albums came out in ‘86.
The entire album rocks. Its gorgeous. Put in on and I remember being a teenager in Alaska again, cruising the snowy roads with my sweet bf.
He’s also still alive at 77.
omg this song was so amazing live, too.
It sold very well (4x platinum) and 'Amanda' was a massive hit... but it was still not as big as the 1976 self-titled debut, which sold 10+ million copies (17x platinum in the US to date)
Brad Delp left the band after '3rd stage'... and Tom Scholz carried on w/ Boston using new members .
Tragically, Brad Delp took his own life in 2007.
Tom Scholz has been touring as Boston and says he's working on a new album.
So sad how he went out!!! What a voice and a king of lyrics!! Rip!!
Your art comparison was awesome ❣❤
Thanks for bringing back the memory. I haven't listened to this one in at least 20 years.
This whole album is on my top 10 list, it was the first CD I ever bought, just a masterpiece!
This song was from their third album.
Tom is an MIT engineer and understands the waveforms and how they sound. He designs various foot pedals for guitars that are still being used.
Prolly my favorite band since the 80's or late 70's.
I’ve always loved the sound of the harmonizing guitars on this one.
If you want to be shocked and Amazed how different a band can be listen to Beth by Kiss !
The whole album is beautiful. Hollyann is the cherry on top of the sundae.
RIP Brad Delp....grateful to have seen them live...one of the best light shows I have ever seen.
One of the great power ballads of the 80’s. ❤
The legendary Brad Delp (RIP) on vocals… Great reaction and review
FIREHOUSE LOVE OF A LIFETIME!!!!
A really great group ❤.
Love me some BOSTON ❤
BOSTON - "" Don't Look Back "" AUDIO VERSION is 6 minutes long and it's the Full Length Song another one one of their biggest Rockin' hit songs of the 1970s 🎸
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Love Boston
The ultimate line “ tomorrow may be too late” 😂😂😂…Boston is awesome !! I am hoping they tour one more time because they are fantastic in concert !!,
Ive never heard this before, it's lovely. Thank you Robert.
I remember us riding in my car
Her body tanned and wet, down at the reservoir
At night on them banks I'd lie awake
And pull her close just to feel each breath she'd take
Now those memories come back to haunt me
They haunt me like a curse
Is a dream a lie if it don't come true
Or is it something worse
That sends me down to the river
Though I know the river is dry
That sends me down to the river tonight
Down to the river!
Into the River we dived.
If ya know ya know, both great songs and lyrics!
Bostons Brad Delp what a voice!

Please react to "A Man I'll Never Be" one of my all time favorite songs . Please react to it and if you do play the album track like you are doing with this one . The live versions are not on the complete song.
