An extreme rarity: A debut album where every song on the album could legitimately have been released as a single. More Than a Feeling was their debut single.
Indeed!
Yes, outstanding album, Magic. ❤
Only other I could think of is Van Halen 1 both super talented
Every song on that album is a staple on classic rock radio... I can't think of any other album in which that is the case.
Guns n roses-appetite for destruction
This is one of THE BEST CLASSIC ROCK SONGS IN HISTORY OF MUSIC…it never gets old.
On one of the best classic rock albums in history. One of my favorites of all time.
The song has an irresistable structure with great switches and the singer and guitarplayer lifts it to the highest level. Nothing could be done better. Great songs made in the 70s like this one .
This is from Boston's debut album, which is a masterpiece. Every cut is worth a listen. My personal favorite is "Peace of Mind".
"Peace of Mind" was actually featured in the video game Grand Theft Auto 5.
Totally agree
That song is a masterpiece beyond and above anything I am used to hearing.
Yes, Boston is indeed from "Boston." Lol. A legendary rock band, who's debut album is still to this day, one of the biggest sellers of all time. Every song was a banger.
The most incredible thing about them is that the guitarist Tom Sholz wrote every song, played every instrument, and did the entire production of the album in his own basement. He then recruited his friend, singer Brad Delp, to do the vocals. Once they had it all recorded and shopped it around to local radio stations and record labels, they caught on. Once they started to hit, they then had to form an actual band and start touring/playing live. It is truly an unheard of rise to fame.
They have so many amazing songs. You can't go wrong with any of them.
Sometimes referred to as "the album in search of a band".
@jimmcevers9443 haha. Facts! 😄
the drums were re-recorded by Sib for the actual album.
Short "how to" find a great Boston song.
1. Pick any of the 6 studio albums.
2. Select a random track.
3. Press play.
Everything you said is correct. But, you left off, that he also built all the recording equipment himself. (By hand.) He was a MIT trained electrical engineer.
They way Tom Scholz used Brad Delp's vocals to transition into heavy guitars is just amazing. Gives this song something you can't find in any other song.
I was born in '70, so I grew up to some of the greatest music from the '70 and '80s, when musicians and vocalists HAD to be exceptional. No computers or auto tune.
I have an album, have 40 years of ago. I still listen 🎶.
@@leeyaferguson9019
Nothin like listening to vinyl !
👍
Tom Scholz an MIT educated electrical engineer genius working for Polaroid Corp.(Yes the legendary instant camera’a and film company) in Waltham Mass was given an ultimatum by his bosses because he was spending to much time on his hobby music. So he resigned.
He build a studio in his Watertown apartment (yes Same Watertown as the shootout with the Boston Marathon bombers). He soundproofed the room with material he bought so as not to be evicted. Built all the studio equipment from scraps he found.
He created all the sounds himself with exception of Brad Delps vocals, Brad, from Peobody Mass, was introduced to Tom by Barry Goudreau. The drums were provided by Jim Masdea and then Sib Hashain for the final production. Sib’s was from Lynnfield Mass and his daughter married Dwyane “The Rock” Johnson.
Tom Scholz created the sound of two guitars by overdubbing his own guitar tracks. He produced the harmonies by over dubbing Brads remarkably vocals.
Tom first lied to a prospective music producer that the sound was created in a California Professional Music Studio because he thought know one would believe he made it in his basement.
The debut Album is one of the greatest debut rock studio albums of all time in 1976. No one had ever heard anything like it.
It presented a new problem. The record company insisted they tour. Which meant assembling a band the technically didn’t exist.
But they pulled it off. The rest is rock history. RIP Brad Delp.
PS Marianne was a real person. When Tom Scholz was 10 he had a crush on his cousin Marianne.
"No computers or auto tune" Computers and other forms of electronic recording aids in general most certainly existed in the '70s, and this album is full of them. Sound engineering, editing, mixing, overdubbing, multitracking, lip synching, etc, was very much a part of the music industry well before the '70s. While they may not have yet had auto tune, that didn't mean they couldn't and didn't enhance and "sweeten" the voices and instrumentals on records. They did it the old fashioned way, turn a knob, push a slider on the board, and viola. They could make anyone sound better. In fact, there was a bit of a scandal about that in the 1920s and again in the '50s, pertaining to "singers" or musicians who got credit on records who didn't or couldn't really sing or play, but they had the right "look" and charisma that could make a lot of money for the record company, so they got a lot of help in the recording studio through the magic of sound engineering.
I love when younger folks find the music of my youth. Suffice to say, I no longer look proper to rock and roll, -- no hair any more, for one --- but we grew up on Boston. You get it.
It's fitting that this song repeats, "I close my eyes and I slip away", because it is scientifically proven you can't hear this the first time with eyes open. This song closes your eyes, and carries you away.
Boston is a great American rock band who had their biggest success in the 70's-80's. They had a lot of great songs such as "Foreplay/Long Time", "Peace Of Mind", "Rock & Roll Band", "Don't Look Back", "A Man I'll Never Be", "Feelin' Satisfied", Smokin'", "We're Ready", "Amanda", "Hitch A Ride", "Hollyann", "Cool The Engines" etc.
Tom Scholz who wrote and played most of the instruments on the first album said he wanted the vocals back a little in the mix so singer Brad Delp could power over the music. All the vocals on the first 3 albums was all Delp.
You can now tell your friends you have listened to arguably the best rock song ever recorded.
For the record the band had five members RIP Brad.
Loved Boston. Miss Brad Delp and his iconic voice. RIP
RIP INDEED to brad
he left us in the same way my father did
I'm forever grateful to my father for PLAYING THE HELL OUT THIS ALBUM around me as a kid
AMAZING
Thank God I was a teenager during the 70's 😉...RIP Brad Delp.
He really is hitting those high notes…RIP,Brad Delp.
Best vocalist in rock history- RIP Brad Delp
nobody can sing like that now .best voice ever
One of the greatest debut albums of all time. Brad Delps vocals are nothing short of brilliant.
And this is what made coming of age in the 70’s magical. What a great time!
I'm blessed to be able to call Boston music from my generation. The so called music today doesn't even come close"There is no school like Old school".
If you dont get goosebumps listening to this, nearly 50 years after its release, one of the greatest singles ever, check your pulse, you're probably dead.
One my top 5 bands all time, saw them live a couple of times. There were 5 original members. RIP Brad Delp
Yeah, I was pretty sure it wasn't 3 members.
The whole album deserves a full reaction.
When they say "Guitar Rock"....they mean this!!!
I can’t believe you’re only now hearing this. One of the best debut albums of all time. NOT a three piece band. TONs of instruments.
I mean, you could argue it's a 2 piece band: Tom Sholz on every instrument, and Brad Delp singing. ;-)
@@crabuki1273Fran Sheehan and the late Sib Hashian would like to be recognized as well.
@@Mr_Obdominabobble Not in making this album. Sholz needed bodies to play his music live. I'm not saying they weren't / aren't good players, just that when it came to making the albums, Sholz pretty much only allowed Delp to have input. And listen to it. It's fantastic music, just a really, REALLY slow manufacturing process. :)
I almost feel like we're being 'punked'.. that these fine folks have never heard THIS song/aren't familiar with it. I am not claiming that that they are pretending but how could this happen?!
@@zephead64no good radio stations
Arguably, the greatest rock song ever. A perfect song.
Having grown up in that time I might be a little bias but the music of 1965-1985 is the best ever written
They were from Boston. They formed in 1975.Brad Delp was the original lead vocalist
Legendary band that created a new sound.
My favorite rock song of all time:
Foreplay/Long Time by Boston
A masterpiece.
kevinehle637 mine too!
Boston is one of, if not THE most underrated bands of all time!! My favorite band!!
Why you recognize it is because its a masterpiece thats been played everywhere for 47 years. I was 18 when this was released. I am so blessed.
Brad Delp R.I.P. Greatest voice of rock and roll.
I think Brad Delp didn’t get the recognition he deserved. He was awesome, and will always be remembered as one of the best singers.
Brad Delp is one of the Greatest voices in Rock history. Mercury, Bowie, Delp, Bach, Plant
So glad to see young people not allowing this great music to die. This is one of the greatest songs ever written. A gorgeous rock song!
Music just isnt made like this anymore which is why these bands from the 70's are still an inspiration for generations to come.
When 2 ppl who only used to listen to rap now jam out over fire guitar solos, fat baselines, bad ass drum fills, & voices with so many ranges it gives you goosebumps you know they are winning. Well done Phil & Sam!
Always appreciate your awesome comments Jennifer! Thank you for hanging with us & giving us great info along the way!
Best Debut Album of all time period Not a bad song on it. 5 piece band you should do every song on this album.
This song is one of the most-played songs of the 1970s (and today as well). The obvious next choice to listen to from this group is "Foreplay/Long Time" off the same album. Btw, this is (or was) the best-selling debut album of all time if that gives you an idea of how good these songs are.
It indeed was and then eventually fell second to Appetite for Destruction by Guns N Roses.
I graduated High School in 1982. I was so glad I grew up during a Golden Era of Music. This was a great song by Boston!
Can't believe there's people on planet earth who have never heard this American classic.......great band/great song/great debut album.
I know what you mean. Blows my mind. I've known it since that debut album came out in 1976. FM kinda ruined this song by overplaying it over the years. I loved the album cover. The space ships were shaped like guitars and had cities inside the domes.
I was thinking the same thing
Because younger ppl not listening to radio
Because young people are fed garbage masked that's music.. you want quality you got to go back in time today's stuff is a bunch of junk computer assistant garbage
Agree. The radio was the way to hear music first.
Your musical sense is impressive for people that have never heard some of the most well known , iconic songs and groups in musical history
IM IMPRESSED
This song was definitely on the Sopranos , amongst many other shows
This debut album was pure magic and the brainchild of Tom Scholtz (lead guitar, writer, lyricist and pretty much everything else). He was an MIT trained engineer who produced the album in his garage/home. Brad Delp added vocals then layered his vocals for background harmony and magic was made. Every track on the album is unmistakably Boston and can stand on its own. Their second album Don't Look Back carried with it similar magic. My favorite song of all time was on the second album. It departed from their usual upbeat sound but was still undeniably Boston. The song is A Man I'll Never Be. It is seriously worth a listen.
This is one of those albums that is a must for anyone with a music appreciation collection. There was a Mary Ann that worked at the ambulance service I worked at and when she would walk into a room, we would start to sing this to her. Brad Delp with that voice being both smooth and powerful could bring out emotions that could just hook you.
This song completely encapsulates 70’s classic rock
"Well, we were just another band out of Boston
On the road and tryin' to make ends meet" - Rock & Roll Band, Lyrics, 1976
Just so you know, every song on Boston's debut album is at least as good, if not better, than "More Than A Feeling". It's one of the rarest of rare albums which contains no clunkers. Love Brad Delp's vocal range where his voice soars into the Stratosphere and like a baton, he hands it over and his voice morphs into the guitar which is playing the same note. I'd highly recommend "Foreplay/Long Time" next. It's jaw-dropping great! BTW, I grew up in Lynn, MA about 8 miles north of Boston. The next town over is Swampscott, MA. Several of the guys in the band lived in and still live in Swampscott.
Forgot to mention, when Boston sports teams are on national TV broadcasts, you will often hear the main chorus from "More Than a Feeling" playing as the game segues into a commercial break. That's probably where you've heard the chorus before.
@@bostonwhofanSome info in here I didn't know, so thanks for this. Also, the song MTAF has been in several TV adverts/commercials down the years, so they may know the track from there. Amazing tune, amazing band and a tragic ending for Brad & all who were close to him. 🤘🎸
Easily one of the best debut albums ever written.
I love watching these videos of the younger generations listening to the music of the 60's and 70's and realizing just how good the music was during those era's and by so many different artist and bands.
Nothing today comes close really!
No doubt those of us the grew up with this music we had the privilege of growing up with the best rock music in history and we also grew up in the era that had the best cars ever as well!
Was fun growing up in an era where sex was safe and motorcycles were dangerous where these days with sex you can end up with stuff that will stick with you forever and could even kill ya!
Boston's debut album was in 1975, they are not a trio, a five-piece band but Tom Scholz created that entire album himself from his basement studio.
I love Boston. I first heard them in high school (around ‘86) and have been hooked since. Rest in peace Brad.
Enjoy going down the “Boston” rabbit hole. One of the greatest Rock bands ever.
being a teenager in the 70s i know i grew up WITH the best music EVER
Definitely need more Boston.❤
One of the best hooks ever
Boston has that "Arena Rock" sound. They are an American rock band formed in 1975 by Tom Scholz in Boston, Massachusetts, that experienced most of its commercial success during the 1970s and 1980s. Tom Scholz first started writing music in 1969 while he was attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he wrote an instrumental song, "Foreplay"
There were 5 band members, not a 3 piece band. The band's core members include multi-instrumentalist, founder and leader Scholz, who played the majority of instruments on the band's 1976 self-titled debut album, and former lead vocalist Brad Delp, among a number of other musicians who varied from album to album.
Boston's best-known songs include: "More Than a Feeling", "Peace of Mind", "Foreplay/Long Time", "Rock and Roll Band", "Smokin'", "Don't Look Back", "A Man I'll Never Be", "Hitch a Ride", "Party", "Amanda" and "Feelin' Satisfied". The band has sold more than 75 million records worldwide, including 31 million units sold in the United States, of which 17 million were the band's debut album and seven million copies of the band's second studio album, Don't Look Back (1978).
This is a link to old photo of the band. The singer is has a beard wearing white suit coat. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_(band)#/media/File:Boston_1977.JPG
I was Maid of Honor at my sisters wedding last year. I broke my ankle two days before the wedding. I was in a wheelchair so I did a lot of chair dancing so I can say with some authority that y’all are on point with your chair dancing 👌😜❤
This entire Boston debut album is fire, every single note, review it all if you don't mind.
Sholz was such a perfectionist I sometimes think it's a wonder we ever got to hear his music.
@@crabuki1273 I became a fan of the band in the late 70's from the influences of an uncle of mine who was 10 years older. We were all amazed the band even did a 3rd album (Third Stage) in the 80's. Most people really thought the band was done and then voila!
Arguably the greatest debut album ever
I grew up in Massachusetts, I worked during the summer as a landscaper in a fairly affluent town. On Fridays we cut a lawn next to the home of Sib Hashian drummer of Boston. They used to rehearse in his basement and as we ate our lunch on the curb many a sunny summer Friday afternoon we would hear Boston practicing. Thanks for the fond warm memory. Oh BTW awesome band…
If not the greatest debut album of all-time, inarguably in the top 5.
This song is a unicorn. A mix of rock, heavy metal and psychedelic in a major key to make it cheerful. It is their most popular song, but they have many other hits.
Please react to Boston’s whole debut album. Every song is a big hit. Brad Delp was the best vocalist of the seventies.
I saw them in Seattle in 1977 and they had five members in the Band. Thery are from Boston, and as a matter of fact, they have lyrics in one of their songs saying "Well we're just another Band out of Boston..."
Just listen to the whole first album from Boston! That is all the Boston you will ever need!!!
Probably the best rock debut album of all time. Also check out Peace of Mind, Feelin Satisfied, Foreplay/Long Time
It's surreal that the hosts were unaware of this song or the band in general. Brad Delp - one of the greatest voices in rock - RIP.
Brad Delp greatest rock vocalist i have ever heard, three octaves up in one breath. Legendary.
An AMAZING band!! Thank God I was raised in this Era of music!!❤
Every song off Boston's debut album was played on the radio for many years after its release.
I forget sometimes not every one was raised on this music. Love Boston
When the chair dancing starts you know you're into it...Great choice!
Boston was my first concert, Sammy Hager opened up and the power went out during his set. As a 12 year old I was blown away and got to see some really great bands in the 70s 80s and 90s. Next up should be Foreplay/Long Time
One of the STRONGEST Debut Albums of ALL-TIME!!

OMG!! The soundtrack of my high school years. This is one of the most epic albums ever made
"Rock n' Roll Band", "Foreplay/Longtime", Smokin', "Hitchin a Ride", "Peace of mind", "Don't Look Back" etc.., what can I say, Boston was huge and on fire in the mid to late 70's, we loved them. Boston just got you into a great mood and you wanted more, more, more.
I am always shocked when people haven't heard Boston. I'm sure this song has been played every day on a classic rock radio station in every city in the US for the last 40 years.
All the great '70s music is somehow timeless.
Brad Delps vocals were INCREDIBLE!! RIP! love Boston! 🙂
If you're looking for more Boston, Peace of Mind is a must. It comes from the same album and is one of my favorite songs of all time
Yesss!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you 🙏... a man I'll never be, don't look back, foreplay/longtime....and the list goes on & on
Keystone of the soundtrack of my High School years. A must have for teens at the time.
Boston were the pioneers of what we called FORMULA ROCK back in the late 70s. Tom Scholz, the guitarist , is a master of technical effects. In fact, he has a line of pedal effects and amplifiers under Scholz Research and Development. SR & D. Barry Goudreau and Brad Delp held killer vocals. These guys spent a lot of time between albums and many rumors of breakups surfaced. I believe a couple of members have passed away but the, as a group, certainly SET a new standard for groups that formed in the 80s. For instance: Journey, Bryan Adams, Asia, 38 Special, and on and on. Loved your reactions. 😊
Keep exploring..you will find many more treasures!!rock on guys! I'm 71 snaps lived through many decades of awesome music..this one bring me back in time when I was on a amusement park ride..this song and its beat was in perfect sync with the ride!!thanks for the memory...have fun in your discoveries! You two are great!
RIP Brad Delp - you were one of the greatest!
My buddy, who worked in a record store back then gave me this album for Christmas. As a college student, in the 70's, studying to be a recording engineer, I was blown away! Check out "A Man I'll Never Be" from their "Don't Look Back" album.
This is an album every teenager had to have back in 1976. I know I had the 8-track, I think.
I later bought the album.
Yes they were from Boston and consisted of 5 members Tom Schultz-guitar, keyboards, Brad Delp-lead vocals, guitar, keyboards, Sib Hasian-drums, Barry Goudreau-guitar and Fran Sheehan-bass was the original lineup.
Brad Delp could hit notes only dogs can pick up on and come running. Not one bad song on that entire album. R.I.P Brad Delp, thanks for the voice and tunes to rock out to in the car or house party!
I was 14 when this one came out. And we listened to it even in Norway. Still like it.🤗
Nice to see people in 2023 react to this song the way I did when it was first relesed back in 76.. Do some more they are/were a fantastic band. Do all of their songs, they don't have a bad one. Foreplay long time will blow your mind.. RIP Brad
Best wishes from France
Boston had some of the best "feel good" music of all time. They have banger after banger. Cant wait to see your faces reacting to Forplay/Longtime. So much ear candy....probably the best debut album of all time.
Tom Scholz did the ENTIRE album HIMSELF (wrote the songs, played all the instruments, and recorded it in his home studio) with the exception of the vocals who were done by Brad Delp.
He was immediately offered a record deal in which he had to rush out and get more band members to play the album live.
*According to Tom Scholz who talked about it in a video here on YT.
@joshtaylor4583 Tom most certainly did not write all of the songs on this record, and Tom most certainly did not play all of the instrument tracks. Tom most certainly did not record this whole record in his basement either.
Brad wrote Let Me Take You Home which was recorded by producer John Boylan at The Record Plant LA and all tracks were played by the band s pictured on the back of the record. This song was recorded by the band as pictured on the back of the record BEFORE the record was finished and released The Band we came to know as Boston did in fact exist before the record was released and finished. All of the drum tracks were played by Sib except for one and Jim Masdea plays drums on that song. Jim played all of the drum tracks on the demo that Tom submitted to Epic records and producer John Boylan. This record is just so much better for the fact that Tom did not play a single drum track on this record. Tom is a poor drummer at best. Tom is not some Vinnie Calliuta, Jeff Porcaro or Bernard Purdie.
Epic did not sign Tom and Brad until AFTER they played their songs live for Epic execs, and Brad was not some hired gun either. Brads voice was an essential part of the Boston sound before this record was even made and Brads voice helped Tom and Brad both get signed by Epic.
All of Brads vocals were recorded by producer John Boylan at Capital Studios Studio C
Barry plays guitars on three songs. Fran plays bass on two songs, and Brad plays acoustic 12 string on one song.
These facts are all documented in interviews with producer John Boylan, the legal documents from the lawsuits between Tom and Barry and the published liner notes in the original debut Boston record and in the 2006 Scholz remaster of the Boston debut record. Tom has a habit of obfuscating the truth about how this record came to be and who did what on it and diminishes the contributions of others.
Here is another well documented fact. Brad and Jim Masdea were finally given credit for all of the arrangement work that they did on this record albeit decades after the fact.
Great album from 1976
1st album one of the greatest of all time!!!
Tom is actually from Ohio and went to college at MIT. An absolute genius. He invented an amplifier that can't recall the name. He was also a consultant for NASA.
Arguably one of the best songs ever released. Its such a great song from start to finish! I wish music could be like this again.
Tom Sholze was the founder and Masterful engineer and musician of this awesome rock band. He actually was from Toledo, Ohio then moved to Boston were he was a graduate of MIT where he got his engineering degree. He developed his own sounds for this debut album and did play every instrument to make this before forming the band from a group of very talented rock players from Boston area. Word has it the Marianne who was mentioned in this awesome song was a cousin of Tom Sholze when he was a teenager and she was much older and he had a crush on her but understandably it wasn't meant to be and she walked away from him! He also developed a effects pedal for rock musicians called the rockmen in limited numbers and is still used today by every day guitarist.
my favourite song by BOSTON
congratulations for you👍🏻👍🏻
summernight, cruising with your car, windows down and this song blasting...
I'm class of 81, this was a High school jam for me.
The guitar player was actually from MIT and is a genius! He actually had the album written and recorded it in his basement and had secured a record deal before the band was even formed! That’s how strong the songs are!
