My own tips as some one who skates for almost 8 years now; 1- if u really into inline skating, buy good pair of skates, its better, funner, and lasts longer. 2- be adventurous, dont be affaid to challangs your self. 3- stay low, like he said its so fucking important. 4- dont tighten your skates too much, it will hurt, u wont have flexibility. 5- invite a friend, try to get with your local skating group if you have one, it will motivate you, u will probably see better skaters and this will motivate you. 6- while challanging your self is good, dont force it too much, be careful. 7- try to use your skates to where you wanna go, long distances will omfg make u so much better and it will improve your body, i got a six pack only skating :) Good luck ladies and gents, and roll out.
Best advice but i had no one to share it with me specially when u are living in an industrial city people don't give a fuck about fun and exercise all they want is to work 12hours/day, as for me ill do it alone :)
True. My colleague at work got me into skating. Once I got more confident and I built up my skill set, we began feeding ideas off of each other; I picked up his speed and crossovers, he picked up my dance footwork and weight distribution.
Any time you pitch your head forward you're sacrificing good position and balance. I get more out of recording my skating and watching the playback. The top down look at your skates doesnt show you what your arms, body, and legs are doing.
@@vbbcl217 I think it depends. When we're new, yeah, checking the feet to work on getting used to the feel of different edges might make sense - or to correct an error; but we still gotta pay attention to our environment. I think it gets easier not to look down as we start to get a feel for things - y'know, get to the point that we have a better understanding of what to expect.

Great set of tips and nicely explained. My one tip for city skating is to get your head up and scan ahead of you for potential dangers. You can't prepare for everything but being aware of people/cars etc around you is really important.
Simple tip that everybody knows: approach unknown terrains with one foot forward placing more weight on the back. Use the forward one to scout for potential dangers. Sometimes known as the predator, it's very useful.
Aligning the frames on my skates made a big difference for me. Amazing how much you can change your skates characteristics and power transfer with a little adjustment. ( if necessary or desired)
music is cool but please be aware with the environment. Earbuds and non sound cancelling headphones is safer as long as you doesn't crank the volume too high
Same reason it's illegal to drive with headphones in many US states. Not in Ontario, but still a bad idea if safety is on your mind. A helmet is also a good way to prevent a brain bleed.
Personally, I'd suggest that the first 3 things you learn and keep practising are; travelling forwards, backwards and on one leg (for each leg). These 3 basic skills saved me from falling countless times when learning new tricks. It's like swimming; once you learn it, you will always automatically swim the next time you fall into water. If I'm travelling too fast for my grip and wheel setup and I lose control around the corner, I always catch myself on my confident foot and slow down. Also, tip 14; Don't be afraid to reconfigure and experiment with your setup. You don't have to roll on the same wheels, switch them out for different hardnesses, try different size setups (half rocker, full rocker, anti rocker etc.) to find what best suits your environment and style of skating. It took me a good month to sort out every detail on my Sebas, but now I know exactly what I like and what works best for me. And tip 15: Rotate your wheels (look it up if you're unsure what this is).
Mr. Bill another great video. Love the format, the recent ones seem to have a different vibe than past video’s. This one got kicked up a notch when you finished #12 and started to do a little dancing. Great flow moves I really enjoyed watching them. Please more. I think being able to do them ups your skill and confidence level especially when the stuff hits the fan. They give you a lot more options.
I am 34 now and a beginner, again, as I've just re-discovered inline skating. At tip number 12 (listening to music while skating) my initial thought was: No, not for me! I started meditating years ago and since then stopped listening to music while doing sports, because I simply enjoy the silence, rather being able to listen to the environment, and I prefer to focus on just that what I do, no multitasking. But (!) after I saw you dancing with your rollerblades to the music I thought: Oh yeah, I can't wait to do that! I do love dancing, sometimes I skipped going for a run and was just dancing at my home to my favourite music as a kind of workout. Until now I never thought of combining both, dancing with my rollerblades, and I am laughing about that, because it makes sooo sense! Back in my teens when I was skating and later stopped it, I hadn't yet discovered dancing then. I want to express my gratitude to you, for your inspirational videos and the effort you put into them!
Your videos have helped me so much much over the last month and will continue to do so for a LONG time! I imagine this is what you have started this channel for and you are doing a great job!
Well done! Awesome tutorial. I love skating to music, but personally when on the streets I prefer to hear the noise of the city and the sound on my wheels on the pavement. It helps me to feel connected and maintain focus.
I'm learning and I agree with all of you said. Its because I try to feel the rollerblades. And I think the same about "you can do with rollerblades what you do with your shoes". Its the thought that you have to think while skating in my view.
@@heatherlynn4652 That's why Bill included some impact shorts/pants in his list of protective gear. They really help if you fall on your hips or tailbone. Have fun, be safe and have a nice day 👍
Bill you inspired to buy some inline skates at 38 y/o. I use to inline skate a lot when i was 17-21. I forgot just how fun it was and want to get back into it. Thanks for your tips to refresh my memory. I appreciate your videos and purchased some Seba Carbon High 80s to get back into it. Have a great one bro!

Hi Bill, this video sums up the few lessons I took from you few years ago - especially the arm swing :P . I strayed away to other sports since (thanks to your tutelage) and I should show you some day my progress after assimilating Taekwondo and skateboarding. But like any grand master you did hold out the ultimate tip from me at that time... music!
My favorite tips are some of the first I picked up from Bill, Stay Low and Be Specific. Whenever it feels sketchy I check those two and things come together real fast. It seems like it has been awhile since you used both in the same video. Great to go back to the basics in a being a better skater video.

The Blade Sage has spoken. :) . Later in life, publish an "Inline Skating for Dummies" manual. In any case, I use both sets of arm swings. Forward to back if I wanna blaze it (sprint). The side to side (actually it's side in front to diagonal in back) version feels stabler and I apply it when maintaining speed. That's how I roll, son.

Great vid Bill! I'd love some advice from the community if anyone is willing! :-) I started skating about 6 months ago in Barcelona and I am so in love with it! (Amazing city for it). These videos have really helped me learn quickly so big thanks to Bill! When I move back to London I intend to start playing hockey so I'm now thinking about upgrading my skates - I can spend maybe $300-ish. I would also like to continue street skating too tho, because it's fookin awesome! Does anyone have any advice about freestyle skates for hocky vs hocky skates on the street? I can only afford one pair for now. Also, any brand / model advice would be appreciated! Thanks guys! And keep up the good work Bill!
Just go to a good skate shop and find the skates that fit you well and you feel comfortable and confident in. Just make sure it has the option to switch frames, that way you can setup you skates for almost any situation without having to replace them completely.
He is right about skate parks! Most think it’s only for skateboarding and others but not in-lines or roller skaters. they judge rollers it sucks. Learn a couple tricks and then go and show them who is boss!
Excellent tips all in one package, thank you. Very off topic here and I may have missed it, how would you now rate the Reign Skates now that you've had them a while? Interested in your overall opinion of them after having them for some time now.
Yo thanks again for all the great skating vids, I am re-gaining skill fast learning from you and others. Not as flashy, but do you have a video or tips for skate maintenance and care? Like how to remove the wheels without scraping, how to best keep your inner boots clean, etc. Probably bunch of little things Im unaware of. Stay Low!
Tip for those trying the drop off and you still have your heel brake--you won't be able to just drop off. You will need to jump for the brake to clear the obstacle. If you're not feeling confident, break it up into steps. Push off your braking foot and once your other foot is in the air, lift your braking foot up.
Hi, thanks for these useful tips! I was wondering why all master skaters are not wearing any safety equipment such us helmet or kee pads. As master skater you are a role model followed by many other skaters of different levels and ages. Thanks!
Great content. I live on an amazing trail and I’m at the top of a huge hill. Is it safe to go super fast on the road, with traffic? I guess I should know how to slow down
A tip from a figure ice skater! •go in circles with the outside foot doing a barrel/lemon until you feel pretty comfortable •next, do the same thing, but now in a sequence and a foot up. How? Let me explain. Do two-three barrels with the outside foot -> then still going in a circle, go parralel with Your feet and stand kn the outside foot bringing the inside foot up to your ankle or knee. Then bring it down and do two or three barrels with the outside foot again, repeatin the process until you feel comfortable •bent knees. Bending knees is important! Now do the same sequence above, but slowly crossing over the outside foot. How? Okay. After barrels and bringing Your foot up, bent the inside leg and slowly cross over the outside leg. If Your inside leg isn’t bent, you won’t be able to cross it over. You don’t have to necessarily step over at first, just glide it slowly forward and bring it closer to the inside foot, then in front of it, it’s like going a bit diagnally. Do that until you learn cross overs. It’s simple as that! Do it on both sides. Also! ARMS!! For example, when you do backward crossovers to the left, you have to have your right arm in front of you and the left one in the back. Don’t make a straight line, curve it to the inside. Right arm a bit more to the left (inside the circle) and tge left one also more into the circle. Lean a bit forward, don’t be stiff. Your arms will hurt, so do breaks and hydrate. You should check out some figure ice skating tutorials on backward crossovers as they are the same thing on inlines!
I need your help.. i can keep my balance but i my feet keep shaking.. my inline skate is exact fit not too tight and not too loose.. how to improve?? and also i follow the rules loose the break and go low. but my back hurts.. i am 32 and its my first time in my life to skate.
Your back is gonna hurt bro, this is something your body has to adapt to. That said bending at the knees saves strain on the back and keeps you balanced and powerful
New to the channel so you may have a video on it but if not how do you choose your wheel hardness. I moved to a spot with no ice so i'm trying to figure out skating on roller blades.
when i started my back would kill me but after some more sessions the pain was less and less much like stretching the more you do it the better it SHOULD feel over time. working on your core strength helps a fair bit tho

Here's my tip, learn how to lose weight effectively. Every pound lost equates to more quality time in a flow state.
Yes, shedding 'non-contributing poundage' is liberating for a skater. Just 10lbs in my backpack significantly reduces my enjoyment and ability.
The current lock down because of the virus has added 10lb to me and I swear I can feel it in my skating.

Great vid Bill! I'd love some advice from the community if anyone is willing! :-)
I started skating about 6 months ago in Barcelona and I am so in love with it!
Just make sure it has the option to switch frames, that way you can setup you skates for almost any situation without having to replace them completely.
very nice, i should try out the arm swing tip the next time i skate.
and maybe this could motivat esome of my freinds to start skating
I totally missed you "staaaay loow". You need to use it more often again :)
Thanks for the tips. Diggin the acid house & techno jam too :)
Stay Low!
Very nice Bill. I love the way you shot this. Are you using a lapel mic I didnt see it on you at all?
Thanks so much Mike. My audio receiver is in the backpack and the mic is on the strap.
@@BillStoppard Super cool. Thanks Bill.
Learn backward/fakie skating. Very fun to do, takes some time to master, and comes with many flaws and challenges (crossover, jumps, drops...)
I guess I should know how to slow down
Check out the band go radio, Jason lancaster, state champs...great music
Thank you, Bill.

Привет Билл. Хорошее видео. Нравится твой стиль городского катания, твои уроки хорошо помогли . УДАЧИ на дорогах 👍😀
Backwards crossovers are my new challenge. Just doesn’t feel natural yet.
A tip from a figure ice skater!
•go in circles with the outside foot doing a barrel/lemon until you feel pretty comfortable
•next, do the same thing, but now in a sequence and a foot up. How? Let me explain. Do two-three barrels with the outside foot -> then still going in a circle, go parralel with Your feet and stand kn the outside foot bringing the inside foot up to your ankle or knee. Then bring it down and do two or three barrels with the outside foot again, repeatin the process until you feel comfortable
•bent knees.
You should check out some figure ice skating tutorials on backward crossovers as they are the same thing on inlines!
you are a genius Bill , thank you
Thanks for this.
I just ordered my first pair of blades, and am looking for a pre-education before I hit the street.
I'm excited!
Cheers!

Always very interestings videos! Thanks!
What a great video, as always!
Damn thanks mate you explained everything the best way I could imagine
Didn’t realise the “not a jump” was a thing 😂 been on all types of skates all my life was just a natural thing to do !
@@adamlanglois563 so this normal boss?? i am still doing straight line only.. looking to try something new.. thanks boss
New to the channel so you may have a video on it but if not how do you choose your wheel hardness. I moved to a spot with no ice so i'm trying to figure out skating on roller blades.
Great video! Thank you!
what is the track in the background 8:37 when he gives tip 12 about listening to music
#12 is really important! :) I can't imagine skating without listening to music.
Practice cross overs (Tip #8) & power stops (Tip #13) in both directions (left & right) to be a more skillful and balanced skater.
Yes, it might not feel pretty but HAS to be done!
question in regards to tip #1 what if you have back pain after skating in that low position?? am I doing it wrong?
when i started my back would kill me but after some more sessions the pain was less and less much like stretching the more you do it the better it SHOULD feel over time. working on your core strength helps a fair bit tho
Great video......lots of good tips....BTW, love your skates, what brand are they , or are they custom?
Most informative thank you Bill
Great video!! Very helpful!
