Great video, My confidence increased drastically after learning to do this stop! It is by far the "safest" stopping method meaning least risk in relation to stopping performance. One thing that I cue in to improve my drag stop is that I differentiate between weight vs exerting force. So when one says put 60% weight on the front leg vs 40% on the back leg it always used to throw me off. For me I get a lot more powerful drag stop by getting "all" my body over my front foot and actively pushing my rear leg down. I think it can help beginners if you differentiate this in your videos!
I just started blading again after 17 years. In some ways it was like riding a bike, in other ways I had to fight to keep my balance at times. I fractured my skull when I was 18 from a rollerblading accident and haven't bladed since, but I felt it was time to pick it back up, not only because I use to enjoy it, but also I need to get myself fit again. Nice video. There are a lot more ways to stop than I originally knew lol.
Your tutorials are the best on UA-cam for inline skating. The super detailed description of the weight transfer between feet was the only thing that FINALLY helped me grasp not just the b-stop from this video, but the feeling of transitioning from forward to backward without lifting my feet and the forward entry to the powerslide. I've been trying to get those things to click for ages and was missing the proper weight transfer so I'd stick instead of turn or slide when I tried before. THANK YOU!! Please make tutorials like this on everything 😁
This manuever is what got me into Bills videos. I caught a youtube channel awhile back, Domsblading, who gave kudos to Bill. I learned this shortly after have been using it as my main stopping maneuver. Great breakdown Saun!
My pleasure. It is so much easier to learn something new in a static position. Sometime when you get rolling it is too much information to process and learning becomes frustrating.
The "B-Stop" - that's great! I just got some new in lines skates for my birthday. I started skating in them again, after many years of not. Though I roller skate all the time. But it's taking some time to relearn, and get use to the differences between skating in in lines, compared to roller skates. Thanks for breaking down the B-Stop.
So glad i found this video! I havent found any other serious inline skaters where i live and taught myself most of these elements seperately but never brought it together, can't wait for the snow to melt so i can hit the streets again! Subscribed!
This was one of the most helpful techniques i learned from Bill....the drag + powerslide is probably the most effective way of stopping without heel brakes. at first i was trying to get the full powerslide at one movement until i tried to use the drag to prepare me for the powerslide.....and the cool thing is that even at moderate speed you can achieve it safely. Your breakdown helps even more to study the movement to link the drag/powerslide, thanks a lot for that
It is amazing how well this technique works at high speeds and on all surfaces. The drag flows so nicely into the powerslide there is little risk of getting caught like on a parallel slide.
I feel like giving you a huge hug! Thank you so much for this great breakdown!!!! I was obsessed with stop, but it was to complex for me to learn it on my own.
I want to thank you for taking the time and efford into explaning so well in all your inline skating tutorial videos. They are so useful! Gracias de verdad. En qué se diferencia este freno al soul? Gracias saludos desde Ecuador Volví a patinar a los 24 años de no tocar un patín. Veo tus tutoriales y me emociono
Shawn stopping technique is beautiful and pretty easy to understand and to follow. Where Bill Stoppard technique is you need strong feet to power stop!
I´m starting practice another way to stop in this moment only stop whit T-stop and hockey stop, and this is a combination .... Very clear and datailed like always
Something I think is worth to mention is also working out. if you got weak butt / leg muscles this stop is going to be much harder to pull off. For me I had issues with doing squats, right? So what a PT pointed out for me was that my right knee was weak, and when I crouched it would fall inwards making me unstable. Squats for 2 weeks sorted that, and I noticed a majour improvement in balance and stability when blading. So if you're a slim person like me, and this stop is hard to pull off, do some squats. There's a lot of force that goes into making them wheel slide. Bill stoppard is deffo over 80kg, and ripped as all hell. I can tell he puts a lot of force down his heels. Imagine me, 66kg with a much weaker frame trying to do the same with 82A wheels. Oh and yeah, if you're struggling with this stop, have a read about wheel hardness. When I learned about it, I switched to 85A and have had a much easier time pulling it off.
Great video as always!! Maybe im wrong, but let me make a remark, i think the weight of the leading(balancing) leg at the moment of the stop is a bit more on the heel, and not on the toe. Bill's stop looks like a very Sharp turn with the left leg, and a slide with the right.. If his weight were on his toe, his heel would write a circle to the right (as yours) but his heel stays in line and his toe moves to left.
Awesome break down and really helped me nail it. Once the coordination is there n you feel the correct moment to shift your weight this really helps in understanding the stop and is great in inline hockey and out door skating. Thank you
Heck yeah. There is a sweet spot when transitioning from the drag to lunge position that the rotation happens so nicely. I really like this spot because you stopping foot is always on the inside edge and it flows so nicely.
Great little video series, i absolutely love Bill Stoppard, what an inspiration that man is, i just bought my new skates 2 days ago, skating in Dublin is rocky at best though, haha
Revisiting this video. I have actually become pretty good at this stop...on flat ground. We have some pretty significant hills in our area, so how to adapt this stop while bombing down a hill? I still use the heel brake going down hills, but that is the only place I use it now.
Hi.. Today is my day 7 of skating. Thanks because most of your video inspired me untill i bought one for me last week and start learning and skating at the age 36. I have question.. I watched most of stop method using one side stop and turn. For example, i can do T stop with my right foot at back then turn clockwise but difficult to do it with my left foot and anti clockwise turning. Is it ok if I only focus on what dominant side of me for any situation that need to use stoppard in skating. Tq..
Zainoz Zaini You'll always favor one side or the other. With this stop which I started doing/trying as soon as I got some skates, Bill got me back into skating, I favored my left leg. I force myself to use each leg switching legs each time I stop. Now 8 months later I can do both sides equally as good. I still naturally favor my left leg. But i feel comfortable on both sides now. Drill it to kill it.
I love all your videos i have download it i have watched it twice thank you for your help your time every thing you always encourage me and you are soooo effective 👍👏
Found your channel today by the skating in mall video and i just can't resist from saying i love your channel and i've just been here for a few hours browsing and watching your videos. I love skating way more than walking! Currently my skates have back brake and i never use it, i always do this stopping method that you've shown in the video.. I am now looking to buy inline skates without brake so i can be more freestyle like you!
i need to finally take off my heel brake and commit to learning the b-stop and stair riding this summer. great video. going to come in to shop task once i'm back in calgary in june. i think it's time to upgrade from my wayne gretzky skates ;) going to lose a wheel soon!
Namaste big bro ! learning A LOT from your videos ! they are very clear, well detailed, and effective. The indications for the weight transfert are priceless.
The best way to practice and build up this bill stoppard is doing slalom, making the turn tighter and tighter until you rotate 90 deg or face backwards, try to push on the outside leg when turning.
During my rollerblading in a slope, I just got accident by falling yesterday. It was unexpected. I tried to use the T line to stop slowly but it was difficult so I had to do something. Sadly I misbalanced.😅
very clear explanation, iam one year into inline skating and yearn to use this combination stop! but ive changed to rockered 76, 80, 80 , 76 as so much easier to turn and spin . Anything different to know before i attempt this stop ?
I find that with a rockered setup you need to be a bit more mindful of your weight transfer and be sure the you are exerting the force through the heels of your foot.
Thanks dudes! I will keep adding more speed gradually & pulling this stop. Right now I use a plough & then I do this stop. I have my older skates with no brake & was going down a hill. I just don't want to be sidelined from being hurt. It freaking hurts when you get older & tweak something. My favorite skates are my new Maxxum 84mm rollerblade skate, I can be really aggressive in these & feel supported on all my manoeuvres. Love those skates!!
Really nice, thanks for a great breakdown! I have to ask, did you notice any difference in how Bill skates on 4 wheels compared to 3 wheels? Couldn't help but notice you included some nice footage of his tri-skating as well.
I did notice how on the 3 wheel skates Bill is able to better leverage the inside edge during the stop. Meaning he can get further onto his inside edge without changing his body position. I think that the 3 wheel setup is great for Bill's fast, nimble style of skating.
Really good break down and how to explain it. I will practice this one. thanks! I think I use my left side doing this maneuver. I wonder if I can learn it for my right too.
You can for sure. I am right leg dominant so I found it easier to do this on my side. When I was practising on my left side it was too hard because my right leg did all the balancing.
When you push with the stopping leg, do you pull your toes up to force your heel to push (flexing your ankle) or is the foot 90 degrees with leg (not flexing ankle)?
Thanks. I was able to do it after a short period of time. finding out it is more of a swivel made it click in my head. I seem to favor my left leg as the stopping leg which is awkward because with the T-stop my stopping leg is my right leg.
Great video! Trying to stay on the outside edge of supporting skate really made some difference. However I’m a bit confused about where should the stopping power come from. I just watched a couple Bill’s video on stopping techniques and he repeatedly emphasize the importance of the back foot. He even said you should be able to stop on the back foot alone. Maybe because he was demonstrating in a very low speed.
For me, the transition from the balance leg is different what I was trying to do. I will practise the way as you broke it down and I will update you with my results. :) Thank you for the video. Regards from Brazil!
I discovered that I need to work on my weight transfer from the balancing leg to the stopping leg. It is quite hard to do the transition and I have to practise more. Kind Regards from Brazil
Naturally you need Bills legs to do this as effectively as he can... I just returned to skating at the start of Jan (inadvertent NY resolution) after 20yrs barely skating. At least I had my squash playing to get some strength but skating well requires the right muscles to be developed so I think it will be a while before I can do a “B-stop”
Keep going i love to watch you ... i love skating since I was child but i cant jump in the skate I think it’s hard and my skate is not good enough.. i hope to be like you someday💙💙
Very cool, as usual I find the most valuable info in your descriptions of weight distribution to the specific wheel. Thanks!! It'll be nice if you did something like this with Greg Mirzoyan's stopping technique, where he doesn't need to drag to slow down first to a "safe" powerslide speed. He just belts it out at 1000mph and stops on a dime. Ridiculous and surely the most handy in emergencies.
It is so impressive how he can bust out the magic slide at high speeds. The Rollerblade instagram posted a video of a Greg Mirzoyan tutorial on the "magic slide". After watching this tutorial I was thinking that I should add my two cents to this maneuver. I will 100% do a video on the magic slide.
Looking forward to this one! I use myself the Bill stop a lot when city skating. It's a very comfortable and effective stop. Very well explained in this video. Thanks a lot for those precious tutorials.
hi there when you say 3rd wheel you mean 2nd wheel counting from the front wheel or the back wheel. I use a fitness with 4 wheels and try to figure out witch. one is the 3rd. thanks yours vids really help us. from a friend in Brazil
Shawn, thanks for the breakdown. I also ask you for a comment about the difference of this technique and the parallel slide, cause i think i do a little both when intending to do the "B Stop". Like the creativity on the name!
The parallel stop is done on corresponding edges. Meaning, one inside and one outside edge. The B Stop is using the inside edges on the stopping foot and the other foot is used for balance and pivot. I hope that makes sense. If you are using a drag stop to set up a parallel slide, then you have amazing stopping technique. Bravo.
Thanks for the answer Shawn. It lightened some sparks in my mind. Actually I do more of a B Stop, but I'm on the way to really learn it! Sometimes i do the pivot in order to stop but I keep rolling, doing a curve. I'm working on it. Doing the drag before is really helpful. As allways, thanks for your time!
Trying to learn this stop. I'm about 180 pounds and using 89a 80mm wheels. I keep going into a slide and flew to the asphalt a couple of times already... I think my wheels are a bit too hard for this stop. Still trying tho.
Thanks for the excellent description, I use my left leg as my balancing leg, however I keep turning to the left (when i try to rotate and push) am i doing something wrong?
I just got new wheels for my inline skate and find it very hard to do the powerslide. The wheels are powerslide’s matter juice F1 and its hardness is 86A. Is it because the wheels are new or these wheels are harder to do the slide? Thanks man!
I’m having trouble with how to think of my weight distribution while I do this. As I drag stop most of my weight is on my front foot. Same as I enter the lunging stage. Now I know at some point I know I need to send my weight onto my back/carving foot but I’m having a hard time figuring it out. Any tips?
Great video, My confidence increased drastically after learning to do this stop! It is by far the "safest" stopping method meaning least risk in relation to stopping performance. WOW! Great point. I am going to steal your lingo. Exerting force is much better language. Thank you.

I have seen that same video a while back. It would have been worth checking it out before I made this one.
Thanks again, for the support.
This has all the technicalities that I’ve been missing to really understand how to stop…..Gratitude 🖤🙏🏿
I LOVE HIS SKATING.
thanks for breaking this down at a stationary position!
My pleasure. It is so much easier to learn something new in a static position. Sometime when you get rolling it is too much information to process and learning becomes frustrating.
Great advice, once again. Thank you, *****
Haha if only the nearby tennis court wasn't covered in snow. Yay Canada
Haha! Try an underground parkade.

I think Bill has evolved his technique but still a good point to start with. Regards from Barcelona
wait...you are the winner of the 2014 skate cross event in Calgary? man! WHAT a race. WHAT a win.
Yeah, I did win. It was an awesome experience. I had the pleasure of racing against Antony Pottier, who is such an amazing skater.
Bill Stoppard rocks. You explained it well. I’m trying this day 1 lol
many thanks, I have been looking for something like this for a while because in his video's it always goes so fast.
i need to finally take off my heel brake and commit to learning the b-stop and stair riding this summer. great video. going to come in to shop task once i'm back in calgary in june. i think it's time to upgrade from my wayne gretzky skates ;) going to lose a wheel soon!
Such a great tutorial!!! By watching it and practicing hard I learned the powerStop tecnique all by my self. Thanks mannn!!
That is awesome!
Namaste big bro ! learning A LOT from your videos ! they are very clear, well detailed, and effective. The indications for the weight transfert are priceless.
YES! Thank you for sharing.
Great explanations! Love your vids guys! Big up!
This breakdown was so detailed...thank you so much! And your voice is so soothing you should do meditation readings
Thanks for this breakdown. Very helpful.

Haha! I hope it meets your expectations.
very clear explanation, iam one year into inline skating and yearn to use this combination stop! but ive changed to rockered 76, 80, 80 , 76 as so much easier to turn and spin . Anything different to know before i attempt this stop ?

Thanks to your analysis on the brake of Bill, I could improve it !! Very good your videos!
No problem my friend. Thank you for the nice comment.
The skater I skate with believe I do a slightly different iteration of the b stop with minimal slide by having a wider foot stance
Really nice, thanks for a great breakdown! I have to ask, did you notice any difference in how Bill skates on 4 wheels compared to 3 wheels? Couldn't help but notice you included some nice footage of his tri-skating as well.

The day in that I learn this I'll be happy :)
Great tutorial, thanks!
Thanks Shaun ! I'll try to do as you say , heels it is ....wish me luck , your 'breakdowns ' are epic !
GOOD LUCK! You got this.
Learning a lot from your videos!
Thanks for the lessons
👊🏼
When you push with the stopping leg, do you pull your toes up to force your heel to push (flexing your ankle) or is the foot 90 degrees with leg (not flexing ankle)?
I am maintaining a 90 degree angle but my toes inside my skates are lifting.
Well said, *****
Thanks. I was able to do it after a short period of time. finding out it is more of a swivel made it click in my head. I seem to favor my left leg as the stopping leg which is awkward because with the T-stop my stopping leg is my right leg.

wow, tnx bro for your time and breaking this video into minute details.
Great name! Thank you for the nice comment.
What kinda skates are those wen you were racing thought the alley way. 😮
For me, the transition from the balance leg is different what I was trying to do. I will practise the way as you broke it down and I will update you with my results. :)
Thank you for the video.
Regards from Brazil!
Please update!
I discovered that I need to work on my weight transfer from the balancing leg to the stopping leg. It is quite hard to do the transition and I have to practise more.
Kind Regards from Brazil
More practise and you got this.
I realy appreciate your explanations and all that kind of stuff and also those videos about Bill's techniques . Thank you ! And good job :D
My pleasure. This was a fun video to make.
Solid analysis!
Thank you for this. I would love to see someone do a bstop with a royale to an actual stop. That would be nifty. :)

Great breakdown Shaun! Thanks.

very helpful video man just bought my first pair and love them thumbs up and subscriber thank you so much

I am practicing this technique but for some reason I am over rotating instead of stopping Do you have some hint which would help me?
i still haven't gotten it
Put less pressure on the braking leg
Great lesson bro)
Great vid Shaun, thanks. Looking forward to next week's jumping video 😊
Me too! Thank you, for the support.
hi there when you say 3rd wheel you mean 2nd wheel counting from the front wheel or the back wheel. I use a fitness with 4 wheels and try to figure out witch. one is the 3rd. thanks yours vids really help us. from a friend in Brazil
Good question. I count from the front.
So this is where the B-Stop got its name
Trying to learn this stop. I'm about 180 pounds and using 89a 80mm wheels. I keep going into a slide and flew to the asphalt a couple of times already... I think my wheels are a bit too hard for this stop. Still trying tho.
Thanks for the excellent description, I use my left leg as my balancing leg, however I keep turning to the left (when i try to rotate and push) am i doing something wrong?
thank you for your videos!!
Great video namasté 👏
I think i´ve finally nailed it thanks to this...thanks!
That is AWESOME!
If you are only dragging one skate; won't your wheels wear unevenly over time?
what is de name of this kaind of break?
I just got new wheels for my inline skate and find it very hard to do the powerslide. The wheels are powerslide’s matter juice F1 and its hardness is 86A. Is it because the wheels are new or these wheels are harder to do the slide? Thanks man!
I had to look up 'YYC'. Something to do with the Calgary airport or location? Keep the videos coming!
You got it. YYC is the airport code for Calgary. It has become trendy in Calgary to refer to Calgary as YYC.
Thanks for all your videos !!! Great
which is easier to learn for a complete newb? The magic stop or the B stop?
B Stop
Great video, i love it!
I’m having trouble with how to think of my weight distribution while I do this.
As I drag stop most of my weight is on my front foot. Same as I enter the lunging stage. Now I know at some point I know I need to send my weight onto my back/carving foot but I’m having a hard time figuring it out. Any tips?
Focus on driving through the heels. Also, weight goes downward through the slide.
Nice nice vídeo and actually i stop like this, and an extra tip is "feel confident" :) Namaste
