    Begginer here (1 week). I think begginers tend to use V because it is stable. You always fall on your opposite leg, so you can be kind of relax. If you try to keep you straigt, you have a risk to fall outside where you don't have any support. In a beggining legs are not strong and it is hard to keep one leg balance, but in V shape you simply standing, doesnt matter how strong your legs are and how good you on keeping balance.
    But it is good to know, that for beginning its fine, but in future legs should be upright.

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  6 місяців тому +1

      Yes the pizza V shape is fine and very suitable for beginners while they build their confidence and response to acceleration (whcih V-ing will produce). But you wouldn't believe what a high % of the intermediate skating population are still V-ing when they're cruising or maintaining speed, and that's who this video is aimed at because skating with a V later on when youre a higher level will reduce your ability to glide, increase the potential to be pronated on inside edges which looks ugly and kills your ankles and basically just isn't good proper skating. Knowing this early will help you later on I hope.
      A way to train not making this V a future habit is to use the free drills I have available on my website which if used regularly will stop you making V-skating a habit.
      Just click free trial on these 2 pages for a total of 5 free stride drills.

    I skate for over 15 years. It is not ok to present a technique that is advanced, double push, as something standard and to recommend it as being a usual technique for beginners and to say that it is wrong to use V skating after you master some skills.
    Yes, it gives you the advantage of maintaining a relatively high speed for a longer period of time as long as you are in shape.
    But it has a lot of disadvantages:
    1. To be efficient, you have to own speed skating to let your ankle do the proper job. But if you don't have trained muscles you could hurt yourself. If you use freeride or fitness skates you will not be able to develop a correct double push and even you can hurt your calves from skate cuff. That is precisely why all the sequences in this video where you show that the double push technique is used by professionals only use a pair of speed skates!
    2. Drain a lot of energy.
    3. It's not good for city skating. you can not react quickly when you try to avoid a danger when you double push. When you push inward, you have almost all your weight on that leg, the other being practically in the air. It is very hard to react, break instant in that position.
    4. Even if you have a pair of speed skating, if your leg muscles are not trained and you do not use the technique correctly, you can very easily sprain your ankle!
    You viewer, if you want to learn double push, do it, but document yourself first! But not from this video :D
    Enjoy skating!

      @SkatefreshVideos  8 місяців тому +6

      I wrote a reply to you a week ago but it seems it didn't post, so here's a re-run.
      I think you misunderstood the point of the video. This is NOT a video about the Double Push, nor do I think the double push is appropriate for beginner or intermediate skaters. The double push is a much more advanced technique that requires a solid understanding on pushing, gliding, edge control and a strong fitness stride BEFROE even attempting to learn it. So on that point I completely agree with you!
      This video and the V-ing issue I'm talking about only features more advanced skaters because I wanted to show why I think the V-ing problem exists so commonly and that's because I think skaters are trying to copy and emulate the high level speed skaters double push, but in the process they just turn their toes out when they set down and so create the V-ing problem. If you listen to the audio when the speed skaters are shown you should hear this explanation.
      I hope this more clearly explains what my point was in the video.
      I do have a double push online course with a couple of free trial exercises for those who want to learn the double push, but I don't expect them to be watching this video as it's aimed at Beginners and lower intermediate skaters. But for anyone interested in those free double push drills you'll find them here;

      I use fitness skate (3 x 110mm wheels) just fine to double push up to 4 hrs skating marathon session even on uphill climbs on city streets with vehicular traffic. I do skate with the topmost straps loose and I can bend my knees as far forward with ease on my skates as barefoot so I'm actually using my ankles to help power the strides. 2 days / week I also do off-skate free weights strength training workouts to strengthen my calves and ankles. I get none of the problems you mentioned.
      I don't think Asha is recommending double push to beginners. But it is a good skill for beginners to learn later on after they have learned other skills like 1 foot glide. If not for the efficiency, the double push is actually a more stable (safer stride technique) at higher speeds and even over rough/bumpy surfaces in my experience.

      You aren’t alone in not knowing it’s an issue. This is one of those mistakes that can cause so many issues later down the line precisely because it becomes a big habit and speeds naturally increase this v-ing at speed can cause those “don’t know what happened” falls…. • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  8 місяців тому +6

      Yes it;s hard to break any habit. The troubles can begin when your speed increases to a certain velocity and the V-ing then creates unsteadiness and side-to-side instability. This is where I hear people tall of medium-high speed incidents where they were skating and then "all of a sudden" they fell. I also see this happening on mass street skates when there's a gentle downhill and skaters begin to accelerate more than they want.....they almost always have to pause striding as a safety measure, so check if you're having to do that, as it;s a sign you're at your highest speeds for that amount of V. Hope that makes sense?

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  7 місяців тому +3

      Good question. In my experience helping many, ice skating going to inlines can use all their ice skills but they need to add more to everything as the forces of rubber wheels on tarmac means moving an inline skate is harder.
      Inlines going to ice have to do a bit less of everything…. So you’ll need good technique and get to grips with stopping asap as you’ll have slopes to deal with which aren’t funny for rink skaters. Be careful out there.

    I have never seen the comment I am about to make but it is such common sense that it is overlooked. To keep from V-ing while cruising, the shoe/boot must be tight snugged and the width of the boot matching or slightly smaller than the width of the foot. Otherwise, the foot will slip inwards and cause V-ing. I see all the time intermediate or beginning skaters with sloppily tightened boots and sure enough they are V-ing, despite trying to or keeping their boots close to each other. Hope that helps. Skating with vertical wheels is the foundation for great skating and fun, either for speed or tricks.

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  7 місяців тому

      Yup you are indeed correct. The first lesson in my Beginner Free Starter pack of 2 videos goes into detail about how exactly to tighten your boots and why this is so important. Most people don't get this right and then struggle with their foot basically moving around inside the boot. This is literally Lesson 1 of all things skating!

    Basically it is Newton's Law in play. You just cannot propel yourself (even cruising) without V'ing. Speed skaters do the V's too, in fact TWO times in one stride. They V inwards first, then in the same stride, they V outwards propelling forwards, that is why the back foot goes outwards to the sides, NOT directly parallel behind. It is just not so obvious, as Vs actually cause fatigue, and actually cause resistance. It is like swimming, or just anything in motion: minimise resistance, optimise propulsion.

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  8 місяців тому +3

      It's important that the skates you wear are comfortable for you and that's the main requirement. I've done some interesting "experiments" with students where they tell me they are dissatisfied with the skates they have and "they" don't allow them to make the progress they want. In some cases I wore the same size as a student saying this and to make a simple point I asked if I could wear their skate. On their skates I could make the skates do what I wanted (because I have the technique to do this) and it demonstrated that it wasn't the skates, it was them and their lack of correct technique that Wass topping their progress.
      Equipment is important, but it doesn't come close to how correct technique will transform your skating. I;d say focus more on that now you have the expensive equipment.

      The double push is a pretty advanced technique and most people don't understand or master it because they don't already have a strong fitness stride as a foundation. The fitness stride is a non V-ing stride with a straight ahead set down, good push to the side and centre or outside glide to regroup. Most intermediate skaters still struggle with having all those points fluent in their stride as many are still V-ing on their set-down (hence the motivation for this video).
      You might help your friends more by making their foundations better before moving to even harder stuff.

      I'm afraid I have to disagree. Many (if not most) intermediate level skaters unconsciously lean forwards into a sort of 'speed skater stance' when they're trying to skate faster and this is often accompanied by the V-ing explained in this video. I agree that they're not copying them intentionally but it's more an unconscious thing that happens. Leaning forwards without the amount of knee bend that speed skaters actually use, then causes a host of other problems....

      If you don't mind V-ing then that's OK, but just know you'll be denying yourself the beautiful feeling of a glide (that's the same length of time as your push). This is what makes "just skating" look so hypnotic and beautiful.

      You are rare indeed. It's not common for people to intuitively skate correctly (unfortunately). The problem is that most don't even know they're running risks such as slow onset injuries by leaving things unchecked. Well done you.

      It’s an interesting topic simply because the vast majority of skaters don’t even know V-ing at higher speeds isn’t ideal and should be avoided. It saddens me when ppl stop skating for reasons that ultimately come back to the V-ing such as feeling unstable at higher speeds or having a nasty fall while “just skating”…. Also the V-ing often is accompanied by inside edge pronation and that causes other issues like joint pains….and so it goes on. I want to educate people so they can avoid these problems and keep skating!

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  6 місяців тому

      I did both of those things in this video. I showed the mistake (the V-ingest down position) and then I show the correction (the straight ahead set down). I even give you access to 3 free drills that will help you fix the problem. I also explain why I think the problem emerges (because skaters are trying to copy high level speed skaters) but unfortunately failing. I obviously need to do more videos on this topic.

      The drills listed in the Description box will help you right away to focus and fix your "weak ankles" by working on your edges, steering and weight distribution. Hope you can find the time to use them. They're better than the things I share on UA-cam.

      It's good that you know you're V-ing, but do be careful because as your speed naturally increases so does the risk of falling at higher speeds while "just skating". These falls can be nasty because we don't know what happened and one minute we were skating and then we're down and it's often caused by instability from the V-ing left and right. You wouldn't want to be proud of a huge injury I dont think. Maybe aim to reduce it a bit.

      The solution of V-ing lies in training a series of stride drills which are available free of charge on my website and this video directs you there to get those for free. They are explained in much more detail than I can do in a UA-cam video and they'l also allow you to choose which level you are currently at. The fix for a beginner is different from the fix for an intermediate, tense why I wanted to send viewers to where they can get the most appropriate help - for free, from me. I have a whole Playlist of videos with drills and how tos on the channel. This video helps the people who want to go deeper into the topic by showing them where they can find even better FREE resources. Obviously you don't care for them and that's fine, you don't have to use any of the free content I have. No probs. Others might.

      Well, you've now been made aware of something you are possibly doing wrong and given some links to resources to help you correct this - that's not bad, for free. It would be lovely if you could have limitless access to free tuition that told you everything you need to know, but that's not how the world works and to make a living just from UA-cam is surely impossible in a nice sport like roller skating.
