    One of the best videos for beginners! I can't express how important staying low is (and bending knees). One more great tip is "STOP LOOKING AT YOUR FEET"!

    You have the best most unique voice-over/narration I have heard in a long time!!! Your words show humour and a kind heart, but your voice is like a deadly assassin! Hah! And I hope to learn to skate from your videos once I pick up my first set of skates tomorrow eve. Thanks dude!

      @@yongcu88 I do! And I very much learned to skate! Met some dude from Romania literally the day I bought the skates and all we did was work and skate for like 3 months straight. Was doing small jumps, slalom-type moves and beginning to skate backwards. Eventually I found work as an apprentice electrician and, self-employed in my 30's now, can't risk an injury. But I watched this guy a couple weeks ago for nostalgia. He's fantastic!

    I'm 48 and I love skating, I had my first skating skill on ice during my college days then stopped when I started working. I bought my first roller blades when I was 41 and learned only the striding, when I see your video I learned how to crossover, to do backwards skating in just few days of practice, now I'm trying to practice some I've seen on your video. Thanks for your video tutorial Bill..

    I remember first finding your channel many years ago, I always wanted to skate, aggressive inline skates really caught my interest when I was younger so I got some basic inline skates at first and started watching your videos, sadly soon after I injured my toe and couldn't skate for a while, that's when I got into longboards and cruizer boards. Now I'm thinking of giving skating a shot again, I got my old skates out today and then I saw your new video in my subscriptions, so now I'm rewatching your old videos on basics and tips for beginners etc.

Just did my 2nd practice yesterday and now i can balance. i practiced a lot on the grass and i hold my knees (to keep myself bent) when i glide to a V shape and so far it works. just like snowboarding, we will fall a lot before we get it! keep safe and be positive!

    Hey, this is some great stuff to try out! I switched to Seba's last summer and since there's no heel brake on them, they made me realise how shitty of a skater I really am. It feels like I'm forever stuck in the "okay, I can go forwards, turn and slightly control my speed, but that's it" stage, try anything new (including stops) and I'll just fall over - plus, I had no idea how to improve since there's nothing to practice really if either you fall, or try to avoid falling (99% of time). I love your style and I'm really happy I found your videos!

    • @BillStoppard
      @BillStoppard  9 років тому

      Thanks M, UA-cam instructionals have always helped me in numerous areas, very happy to hear you are doing the same. It sounds like your desire to skate extraordinarily well will be met thanks to your specific target setting. It was a big step when I ditched my heel barake; nice advancement!

    • @rainymornings
      @rainymornings 9 років тому

      PintoPonyProductions Haha that's great to hear, B! I thought it was stupid, going without heel brake, because it forces me to always go at a pretty slow pace as I have no way of stopping in case people or cars suddenly make unexpected moves. As for trying to get my strides and accelerations really powerful and doing REAL stops, I started playing hockey, since I noticed hockey players are generally also great on rollers. It's really not a big thing in my country but I'm starting to love the sport so much that I focus on teamplay rather than my skating abilities, I think that as a crazy quick skater, you'd love it too, the quick moves and transitions and all!

Here in São Paulo - Brazil it's kinda hard to have enjoyable skating moments on the streets so, I can't help fancying myself skating in some nice Canadian City like yours. Here the streets are too messed up with crazy traffic.

    Fantastic video; very informative. I've just managed to get a hang of the stepping-over technique during a turn. Still bit shaky but when I get it right it feels amazing, and thanks to you I realise that the reason why it's iffy is because I'm not low enough. I'm eager to learn the T-stop and power sliding braking techniques so I can take off the brake and learn to skate backwards, but more importantly to also get out on the streets.

    I'm close to 40 and started skating a little over a year ago, mostly to play recreational inline hockey. I realized recently exactly what you said about loosing the stick. I skated without it for a bit a realized what you said, I use it as a crutch sometimes. Like weak side crossover balance. Looking forward to the drills video. I need some ideas on what to do on practice days just to improve overall skating. Thanks Bill! Always love these types of videos!

      PintoPonyProductions You are welcome man, I enjoy the other types as well. Not that I'm a UA-cam expert but as a beginner inline player I wasn't finding a lot of good instructional vids. Maybe only Asha on "Skate Fresh" for basics. I found good ones for ice hockey which translate well except for stopping. You helped me a lot in the one you did where you explained working tight turns into gradual power slides. You have a unique thing going on doing this stuff on hockey skates and I love it. Let me know if you ever come to Southern California! Gabe.

    Two big tips for beginners (like myself) that I would like to share are: (1.) Be Confident & (2.)STAYYY RELAXXXED! These 2 tips could actually be combined into 1, as they go hand-in-hand. ;-) I've noticed that getting all tensed up is the number one thing that causes me to lose my balance/get wobbly, and of course.......wipe out!!! So, to all of you that read this, I hope these extra tips greatly help you become a better inline skater/rollerblader/blader. :-)' And, to PintoPonyProductions, thanks for the great tutorial! Peace!!! :-)

    big thing I hear is people saying they too old to learn to skate never to old to learn/re-learn (might just be not into it that much)
    one thing I like to do is pretend I hit a curb or stick to practice recovering (best done at skate rink or flat service (without sticks))
    I started skating again at 22 that was ten years ago gosh how time flies love the Vida pinto

    I'm gonna answer this and say absolutely. The two are ridiculously similar. It's almost safe to say that if u are a good inline skater then you will be a good ice skater as well even if you have never tried it. The first time I I've skates I was very good at it simply because I had been inline skating for years. Just took a couple of minor adjustments to the feel of skating ice and I was ripping it up.

    Well I've gone and done it. Much to my wifes disgust I have forked out £200 on some shiny inlines! Thanks for the inspiration and the great vids - you obviously put a lot of effort into your production and it's real slick. Keep up the good work dude. If I had 1 thing I could get you to change I would love for you to post the music you use; it's pretty awesome. I guess that would be a whole lot of hassle tho! Keep rolling :)

      Big thanks RS. Congrats on the new blades! I should give details on music! When my process gets more streamlined I hope to post more info on the cool tracks I find on YT's free music library.

    Good tutorial, as a tip you could add an annotation in the Stopping Tutorial reference at 5:38 so people can click to that video easily :)

      Thanks for the props! Yes, on inline skates everything about the stop has to be more aggressive, a big step up, though similar in mechanics.

    As a beginner skater and also in my 30s I find grass to be an extremely effective tool to learn balance to learn your edges and for me I’m just walking on grass like I normally would walk has lessened my pronating by like 45%

    I sure pad it out when in doubt!!! :P over her in Mexico I see a lot of skaters not using them, I know is a personal preference but I rather feel safer. Great tutorial, I will definatly learn from this one and also will break my brakes.

    Great video! I'm just learning to inline skate to practice for a hockey league. I want to learn the right technique so I don't mess up my form. Any tips on balancing and shifting your weight? I always seem to put a lot of weight on my heels and not on the balls of my feet.

    Hey to Bill - great videos, and thanks fer breaking down the stride-carves. I'm watching a bunch of beginner hockey stuff and there's tons of drills that can make an average skating day a whole lot better - like forward or backward edge drills ... ehh, by-the-way are Bauer skates your first or only choice ?
