I think I never commented on a video before, but need to do it now to thank you. In my second day skating, after a horrible first day, I followed this: " One skate, one shoe and play" of the first exercise. Was making that for 2 hours and despite I saw some improvement, thought it was not that big (managed to do some meters in the exercise). Today, in my third day I tried with two skates, a little bit of "scooter" training, and god, it was working like magic. I had way better stability, and in minutes I was able to "skate" for 1 hour straight, not perfect, but more than decent. I'm 28 and never ever skated in my life, so that's a HUGE improvement of what I was expecting to do over the days. Thanks a whole lot for this, really.
Would like to know how you are doing now.. cause I have bought myself skates and protection gear and tomorrow will be my Firstsource day putting my skates on to fall for the first time.. so let us know your progress
ONE foot?!? Beyond brilliant... After seeing THIS, no other beginner vid even makes any sense . I had given up trying to skate- but this vid has me up early practicing almost every day. 🙏🙏 vm!
This video made a huge difference in my learning. I picked skates at 35 for the first time and a was bit nervous and my progress has been slow. But the one skate method has helped a lot. I wish I knew it sooner. Thanks Shaun!
Share this video with a friend who needs some help with their skating. Time stamps for each exercise below. Exercise 1 - One skate, one shoe and play 0:37 This is the number one exercise to improve your skating. If you can master this you go from not just being a good skater but a great skater; the kind of skater that people will notice and say "that person knows what they are doing on skate." Exercise 2 - One skate, one shoe, backwards 4:20 People often neglect backwards skating but it is so much fun. In fact, I would argue that our bodies are better built to skate backwards than forwards. Just like in the previous exercise this is the skill that will take you from beginner to beast. Exercise 3 - Small wheel in the front 6:42 By removing or substituting the front will for a really small wheel we now are forced to skate on the back half of our foot. Being comfortable in this position is essential to becoming a competent city skater. Riding in this position is the fundamental position in city skating and if you can move freely in this position you can now enter the FLOW. Exercise 4 - Predator slalom 8:47 Spend some time focusing your practice on slaloming in the predator position. This is great focused training to get your ready for the city Exercise 5 - One skate, one shoe and slalom 9:25 This exercise focuses on all our fundamentals balance, edging, rotation and weigh transfer in one exercise. A great exercise to help with muscle imbalances. Exercise 6 - Lemon Cross 11:10 I use this exercise to focus on transferring from inside to outside edges. This move is a fundamental of slalom skating but its best application is creating more power in your stride. Exercise 7 - Roller Squat 12:55 The roller squat is an essential body position for city skaters. Being able to get into this position will save you from a dramatic fall that would normally result in an injury.
Hey Shaun! Tried out your one foot exercises...pretty effective....it left my thighs sore for few days! Somehow it's more effective than skating on one foot with both skates on.
I'm a quad skater, but I think I can use most of these! Your 7 exercises make for a definitive practice/warm up session! Thank you for offering this lesson! Namaste.
Thanks for the video. Its great to see you wearing a lid and taking safety seriously. Theres so many "inline skating tips" videos, where they don't even wear a lid, its laughable really that people can have "tips" videos and not even considering protecting their head. Subscribed - Thanks for taking it seriously, Id be happy if my kids learnt off you
It's so obvious that you have experience teaching, seeing as you give yourself positive feedback every step of the way :D Love your videos, keep it up!
Thank you so much for the one skate practice idea, you've got my 3yr old skating for the first time by herself and loving it. Otherwise when we previously tried with 2 skates she was all over the place, fell instantly. Now she's gliding on one for a bit and getting the idea. I predict good progress - it's a breakthrough. 👍👌
Hey thanks for those exercices, I'm gonna practice them Also, I really want to thank you for all your videos, because they made me start roller skating x)
Hej bro, my son was starting 4weeks ago and he is good. I love skating and now my 6 year old son love it to. Thanks for the training tips😊that’s perfect, greetings from Denmark 🇩🇰
I am stuck with my techniques for 3 months after watching this video i think i can grow now much better. This is best video of this type on YT and i love your voice is so calm and easy to hear, thank you.
Thank you for sharing. These are many of the same techniques I use with my students, young and old. And they work! I have one student skating for 2 months and we have done 3 lessons and he skates like he has been practising for 2 years.
Dude thank you so much for you channel and all you help. I started skating again after 18 years and in july this year...i fell and broke 2 vortex! But I am recovered and started my practising again last friday! I am addicted to this sport and your videos help me so much improving! Best wishes from Germany!
Your tips are making me to improve my skating a lot. I started last year in November and it's amazing how I've improve my technique and fluency. I still have so much to learn but at least I'm able to skate really well. Greetings from Vigo, Spain 🤜🤛
Hey Shaun greetings from TomZach and the Burgess Park skate community South London (yaayy..!!). Your patience and positive spirit really come through in your instruction videos. While often just thinking it I thought it is time to say/post/acknowledge it here on one of these forums. Most of us are seasoned skaters but there are always these little nuggets of wisdom that you throw out there and that are SO useful..!! Thanks for the good work, excellent tips and warm humanity..! Bless an' bliss..!
This is the best exercise on learning how to rollerblade on you tube, you're amazing. I want to learn and will be following this, please, keep posting.
I wish I could slam that like button x10 - Thank you for this, gonna get up 3hrs before work every morning, dig in my wireless earbuds and let the vibe glide me through your exercises as I glide around my neighborhood. Being nimble on your feet while free-skating in the city is as important to survival as it is to enjoying the experience .. To those who don't inline-skate (yet) -you're missing out big time.
-not that I don't enjoy skate-boarding, I used to like that, however; you can't just jump off-of (out of) skates as you can with a board (goes for surfing too) .. like skiing, you really need to learn a skill, which takes time, but when you start feeling confident enough to start gliding around the block, jumping curbs, hand-signaling for pedestrians and drivers, you begin to notice something special .. the elegance in your stride and your movements carry your momentum effortlessly .. all the magic aside for a moment, please be very mindful if listening to music while rollin' - hearing traffic is very important .. and please don't just bolt over any perpendicular road from a side-walk, some drivers bolt towards a stop (esp. in the mornings) -then you have to either think fast (run onto grass, or crash gracelessly) -but never dodge into a busy adjacent road .. like ever. Also, when you're bolting down a slick road with lots of parked cars next to you (with traffic on the other side) - be VERY mindful, a door can swing open any time -then you can't just dodge into traffic .. Lastly: if you accidentally fall backwards, keep your arms (elbows and head) in and make yourself small; if you don't you could hurt your head, or snap a wrist, or a finger, or an elbow .. learned that in Jiu-Jitsu and it's pure gold.
Hey! I watched tour video about a month ago. I followed your advice of practicing with one skate on. I had my doubts but boy did it help! I came back to this video just to say THANK YOU! I practiced for about 3 weeks. Everyday I would switch feet. 2 days ago I finally mustered up the courage to put both skates on. To my surprise I felt so much more control than the first time I tried putting them on and kept falling standing still. Thank you so much. I cant say it enough. I cant believe I actually got on both skates AND DIDNT FALL IMMEDIATELY! I find with falling and recognize that falling go hand in hand (if you will) with skating. (Any type of skating) it's just what it is. I accepted to have that type of mentality way before I even bought my skates. I made the decision that I'm going to fall quite a lot. Even pros fall a hundred times a week. Sorry for this comment being so long. You probably won't even get to read this. But if you do...thanks man. You know what your talking about. Definitely know your stuff! You've made an impact on my skating. God bless
Thanks so much for this! The one shoe one skate skooter glide is such a good idea! Helped my kids start to learn to skate today and I used this with then and it really helped them build confidence and get a better feel for their balance.
I bought skates after watching this video, practiced your first excercise for 4 days and that's it..... I've put on both skates today and fell down a few times. After that I could balance by body. No worries at all. Very very helpful video. I'll start practicing other exercises. Love your videos. One small request...Please make a playlist of beginners tutorial videos.
This was remarkably easy and pleasant to watch! Thank you for making this seem so approachable! My skates come in in a couple days so Ill try these drills out for sure.
Great video for some basic tips. I'm teaching skating to some kiddos and your strategy of one skate and one shoe is genius. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I was really good on inline skates as a teen. I haven't skated in almost twenty years and just bought skates again. I haven't fallen. But I definitely appreciate the tips for relearning.
Thank you for this great instruction. As an intermediate skater and someone returning to the sport after many years, this is extremely valuable and supportive.
Dude! I´ve watched quite a few tutorials online and yours are definitely the best. Been rollerblading for several years but a loooong time and picking it up again now and needed some guidance to improve and speed up the process. Your videos are so smooth. Others tend to do it too quickly and not properly explaining the balance etc. Keep up the good work!
Hi Shaun, thanks so much for this incredibly helpful video. Im returning to it now, a month or two into my skating career, to try out the harder exercises. I'm struck by how helpful this video has been to me!
i see you from France and i really like your positive way to learn skating. thanks for your tips. continue it’s reallly motivating. as some one say, Namaste. Guillaume ;)
Awesome! I ripped my knee yesterday but like always u know it better next time... when im fine im gonna go and improve my skating like u showed me now! have a nice ride and stay safe!
Hey great inline skates coach I am fan of yours been following your videos I am trying to start in line skating again after few years back I stop riding but iam trying to learn and been practicing and Wachting your videos great stuff and thanks Marcos from Puerto Rico
It was so so cool! Thank you sonmuch! ❤️I am 44 years old beginner.I have had 7 lessons until now,and try to exercise 2 or 3 timea on a week.My homework is one foot glide, but I can donit😢But now I will try next time this😘🙏
Thanks a lot for this. I am fairly new skater here having started about 10-12 sessions (1 hour each over many months) ago. I am 54 year old and have never skated in my life. I was able to do #1 exercise and go couple of meters on roller skates (quad) in 2-3 attempts but can't seem to do it on roller blades. I can barely stand on single leg. I switched to blades some weeks ago as I couldn't get comfortable with quad skates even after 8-9 sessions of an hour each. With blades, skating somehow clicked but single leg balance is very tricky in blades. I will keep on trying though. It is very hard as I have never ever skated in my life. 🙂
So glad I decided to watch even though I am "experienced" now! Your second exercise is the obvious way to fix what is wrong with my backwards technique. I will absolutely do it. Thank you!
Thank you! I just decided to start skating again, and I haven't skated since I was a kid. These are great, well thought out tips, and I just sketched notes out to keep in my pocket as I try to improve my skating!
this exercise seems genius, it's just that putting the skates on is the most tedious part. Thinking about doing these and then changing the shoe and whatnot. Ill def have to choose the right day and place for this. will try it tho thanks a bunch
These exercises are going to help me for sure. I started skating when I was 8 years old but I have never skated loosely... I have just figured out why. Thank you so much for showing me!
This tutorial video is soooooo cool kids will get to be better skaters if they are scared of trying too skate, but this vid is wayyyy better but balance is the 🔑 !!!
These are great ideas!!!! I'm getting back into it. Been trying to get back into skating since March of last year but didn't have the time so any progress I made is gone now. I'm going to try the one shoe, skate for a couple weeks plus leg conditioning. I started yesterday and my legs were on fire from trying it. I've never seen anyone give that advice on here. So thanks a lot for this video its my go to!!!!
I think I never commented on a video before, but need to do it now to thank you.

Musta stopped skating
You're like the Bob Ross of skating. Really well explained. Great post!
Great and original description, this make me smile. (:
Such a great comment - a true reflection of the content
Been skating 28 years now... time to practice the basics again. ;-)
One skate, one shoe and play.....Two skates, two shoes and.... pray
🤣🤣🤣😂😂
😂😂😂
next step - three skates, one shoe?
LOL
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I'm 42 and started to skate after 25 years. My issue is that I can't bend down in a sitting position, let alone doing it on my skates. 😂
Dude, you just too good at teaching ... so damn chilled, luv it. Yep, me needs to be getting one of those t-shirts.
Thank you Pascal!

Here is me at 32…starting now 🤠
As kids me and my neighbourhood started playing inline football with only one skate.....
Was a great exercise and pure fun to play.
Ahaha, that's a really creative way to play football!

You’re the first ever mate explained how exactly to stand your feet inside a skate, before it was so unclear in seen of balance. Thank you!
It's so obvious that you have experience teaching, seeing as you give yourself positive feedback every step of the way :D
Love your videos, keep it up!
Oh this is brilliant, just bought a pair of FRX 80's and got crossovers down on my 2nd day!

Holy cow, this is great. I've already sent this to my friend who recently started learning and is still sorta struggling with his balance. Cheers! 👌👌👌

Wow the best Inliner video ever seen. I like the idea with one shoe for beginers. It really makes sense.
The lemon glide is a nice move. Thanks
I know I'm a bit crazy. I'm 70. And I just got my skates. I've watched so many videos. This is for sure one of my favs. Thank you.

Roller squat for ever ! It's also a good warm up exercise, I do it before every session. It helps to absorb the shock when you jump off a grind.
Yes. Great point.
I was really good on inline skates as a teen. I haven't skated in almost twenty years and just bought skates again. I haven't fallen. But I definitely appreciate the tips for relearning.

This is GOLD, Thank you for putting this all together. Really enjoy the way you teach and keep things light and fun. Namaste

Dude, this was so awesome. Such a great idea. This gives me more confidence as an older first time beginner.
Great job! Can’t wait to try this.

Greetings from El SALVADOR 🙃
This guy can do it all. Man, he's fun to watch.

So glad I decided to watch even though I am "experienced" now! Your second exercise is the obvious way to fix what is wrong with my backwards technique. I will absolutely do it. Thank you!
Boom! Thank you for all the support.
Thank you! I just decided to start skating again, and I haven't skated since I was a kid. These are great, well thought out tips, and I just sketched notes out to keep in my pocket as I try to improve my skating!
As a follow up, do you have any tips for beginners that overpronate? My husband does and he's struggling to find his balance on skates.
I just watched this. Looking forward to working on these. Thanks.
Thank you for one more portion of really useful advices, tips & exercises!
this exercise seems genius, it's just that putting the skates on is the most tedious part. Thinking about doing these and then changing the shoe and whatnot. Ill def have to choose the right day and place for this. will try it tho thanks a bunch
This is such amazing advice! Thank you! Your commitment to spreading the sport shows. :-)
So wonderful to be able to learn from you. Thank you so much for your chill vibes!
My pleasure. Happy rolling.
Love your teaching style!! Thank you!
Woah...these are great! Gonna practice all of them on my next session 🙏🏿
Yo any updates after doing these?
Thank you so much! Really helpful
Going outside right now
Great video! I’m just starting... seems like a challenge to try any of these. But I’ll get there. Thanks for the tips. Brazilian cheers from Dublin!
Thank you Bruno. It will take some time but if you can master exercise 1, you will instantly be a really good skater.
These exercises are going to help me for sure. I started skating when I was 8 years old but I have never skated loosely... I have just figured out why. Thank you so much for showing me!
Really excellent set of tips - thank you
You have such a positive attitude, i just don't feel at all dumb falling doing these things
Awesome lessons and routines! Will be implementing these in my next session for sure! Thanks for the breakdown!
This tutorial video is soooooo cool kids will get to be better skaters if they are scared of trying too skate, but this vid is wayyyy better but balance is the 🔑 !!!

Great video man. Super helpful for me as a brand new skater. I especially like the technic of getting and low and falling back on your bum.

🤩🤩🤩This is a great video!!! Your super talented. I can’t wait to improve my skills with your training tips!
I've tried the single skate method and I think it worked. I was skating w/o much issue day one.
Great stuff. Can't wait to try them out.
Trying to start skating since years ago. It helps. Thank you,
I feel that if you start with the exercises 1 from this video you will learn properly from the beginning.
Best tutorial ever... Super useful
