Cuba's Leuris Pupo wins the gold medal with a score of 30 in the final of the men's 25m rapid fire pistol shooting event at the London 2012 Olympic Games (3 August).
India's Vijay Kumar won silver in the event with China's Feng Ding claiming bronze.
From just five shooting events at the inaugural 1896 Olympic Games to today there are 15 events in the Olympic programme, divided into three different groups: rifle, pistol and shotgun. The rifle and pistol competitions are held on shooting ranges, where marksmen aim at targets at distances of 10, 25 and 50 metres. In the shotgun event, competitors shoot at clay targets propelled at a series of different directions and angles.

No one expected Vijay Kumar to win a medal at the Olympics. High hopes were from Abhinav Bindra and Gagan Narang. He came from no where and won us silver. I remember we were so happy that day. Our unsung hero 🇮🇳
He won the medal at world championships before that. He was one of the favorites to win a medal in London

these guys are placed 25 meters or 82 feet away from 5 targets with a 10 cm diameter . They also are given only 4 seconds to shot all 5 targets. Some people couldn't even make 1 of the 5 shots let alone shot 5 back to back hits. These guys are some of the most skilled marks men on the planet with almost inhuman steadiness and lets not forget muscle memory. If you cant recognize what these guys do as impressive you truly do know nothing marksmanship.

So, for this to be entertaining, we need to see the damn targets. Also, the green lights are going right to left, for some reason? It's not very intuitive.

Makes it easier to concentrate. Simple as that. And if you want moving targets go watch skeet. The point of this is shooting as accurately and quickly as possible. Believe it or not, hand guns are not very accurate.
Pardini pistols are very accurate. They have springs and weights to reduce muzzle lift. Extremely accurate.
Pistol in general is not accurate . For accuracy go to rifle

Yes
They have both eyes open (or at least i think they do) the plastic things above their non-shooting eye cover up vision for that eye so they don't have to waste effort on closing it (it's a big deal)

Pseudotaxus34 I don't entirely understand this, wouldn't you want as much visual info as possible for enhanced tracking coordination and small compensations? I ask because I come from a skeet shooting background where you always shoot with both eyes open for the reasons I mentioned. This type of shooting here is a world I don't know too much about.
Nylok4601 I used to shoot .22 caliber rifles, and because the target is pretty non-moving while you are looking down sights, you end up seeing the perspective of both the eye that is looking down the sights and the eye that is to the side of the sights, and your focus can drift from the actual target. Closing your eye strains muscles, so they have this little plastic thing so that they can only see a straight line from eye to sights to target. Unlike skeet/trap, there is no need for enhanced tracking coordination (and compensation) because the target does not move. Does this help?
EDIT: The only visual info you need is the perspective of the one eye looking down sights.

Is being able to hit a tennis ball size target at 25m with a pistol that hard because its really easy with a 22 with open sights but I've never shot a pistol so I assume that a much shorter barrel really effects the accuracy to the point that this is an excellent achievement

25m Rapid Fire Piston is only one event in entire conglomerate of Olympic shooting sports.. Over the years, many different shooting events have been taken out and others reinstated. It happens in the Olympics. Shooting does not use the same facilities as most of the other sports and does not effect other sports at all. So why does it matter?

TheCancerousLoli this event is sanctioned by the ISSF which doesn’t really have a presence in the US. There is some competitions in the US but not too many. Because of this though, I’ve gotten into rapid fire because there’s a slight change I’d be able to represent the US at the Olympics if I’m the only American doing it lol.

Not all olympic sports are about fitness. Some, such as this, are about skill and speed.
A camera showing the targets they are hitting might be nice....

Not everything in the Olympics is a test of athletic skill. This is a test of skill. Many other events in the Olympics are tests of skill. Athletic or not, it is worth noting that these men, and the women who do the same thing, are very skilled. Not everything has to be a show of physical might.
