Oscar Albeiro Figueroa Mosquera is a Colombian weightlifter who competes in the 62 kg class. At the 2004 Olympic Games, he finished fifth in the 56 kg class with a total of 280 kg. In 2008 in Beijing, he struggled with a serious injury that prevented him from achieving a result. After a successful operation, he returned in 2012, set an Olympic record of 177 kg in the clean and jerk and won silver. He finally won gold in Rio in 2016 with a total of 318 kg and then retired from the sport by symbolically taking off his shoes and placing them on the platform. 🏅👟

For anyone wondering what happened to Oscar at the Beijing Olympics, he was suffering from a (yet undiscovered) "herniated disc between two vertebrae in his neck that compressed the nerves responsible for mobility and sensitivity in his arms". He had to undergo surgery to fix it before the London Olympics and again 6 months before the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Dude is the definition of grit.

whatever success he attained, it never hurt more than it did in Beijing. To be so hungry and expereince such heartbreak, it stands to reason that moment in China would be the fule for a lifetime.

Weight lifting is probably the only thing that is closest to world peace. Everyone is competing with themselves to be truly the best version of themselves. Everyone cheering for you no matter what race. North Korea winning gold that one time is also unforgettable, but this Colombian winning gold after 12 years is truly a remarkable testimony that we never want to give up..
Tor would be proud of that lift.

I'm an Ecuadorian and I remember this moment as it was just yesterday, all my family was rooting for Oscar, Colombia is our country neighbor and we as fellow latin americans, we suffer the losses and celebrate our victories as one, because only we know the struggle that is to achieve the spotlight in the podium at the Olympics, not to say, to win a gold medal in our conditions is going beyond the impossible with our governments and "sport" committees lacking any attention and support to our athletes.

What I know about weightlifting could be written on the back of a postage stamp but this was a great video! What a wonderful athlete! The toll on the body and mind from that kind of continual punishment must be overwhelming, yet he persisted until he reached his goal.

This story reminded me of the story of Hidilyn Diaz of the Philippines 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭 .
It also took 4 Olympics for her to get the gold ( none in the first and second try ( 2008 & 2012 ) silver in the third Olympic stint ( 2016 ) and gold in the fourth appearance ( 2020 ) , exactly the same journey as him.
They should make a movie about this guy. Just for his determination and true grit.
