Imagine how horrifying it must be for these trainers that some kid comes in, throws out a pokeball, an instead of a rattatta or metapod, out comes a moving corpse of a species long gone that won't die no matter how much you attack it.
For those wondering what the fuck these creatures even are code wise, As I don't know if this is covered in the video. And just as a word of warning, I do not know a lot of this shit for 100%. If you want answers that are 100% accurate, I would suggest looking into it further. But I can give a solid idea of what they are. In order to save on space, Game Freak used the function that already exists to print out a Pokemon's Sprite for the Pokedex with the Fossils picture display in the Museum. And in doing so, needed to add them to the list of Pokemon. This same trick is used for the Ghost Marowak by the way. They don't actually exist as Pokemon, possessing no Base Stats to read from, or even a Name. As the names.asm file for the Pokemon Names, they simply have their entiries as the standard "MISSINGNO." entry. However they are not the same as other MissingNo. In a few small ways that don't mean much. However due to the way the game was coded. MissingNo entries CANNOT be ignored in many of the functions, such as cries, and Dex Order. This is due to the fact that the amount of Pokemon is initialized by the length of the array that defines the Pokemon themselves. And most of these functions simply read from this array. Much of their weirdness comes from this alone. They are pseudo Pokemon, they are real entries to the list. But are not supposed to exist in battle or even be more then a literal window display. So when the game is trying to find data for them all sorts of weird shit happens because they do exists but not really.
Exactly. The difference between these and Normal Missing no. are that normal MissingNo do have default values for base stats, typing, and starting movesets, but the fossil missingNo and Ghost MissingNo do not
It is very, very funny that due to a combination of spaghetti code you can use a fossil that wins fights by breaking into negative HP. Incredible, cosmic coincidence.
I know you noticed this, but for all my fellow viewers here: The reason he could teach these glitched pokemon anything is because he has HMewl with him, who can learn any TM or HM in Gen 1 (and virtually any TM or HM in all other generations), by putting HMewl in the 4th team slot. You can see this in action in the background during his voice over before his fight with Erika, as he puts the actual Aerodactyl in the 4th slot, and suddenly his Lord Amber can't learn Rock Slide. When HMewl goes back to the 4th slot, Lord Amber can learn any TM or HM.
Yeah, it doesn't havfe to be Mew, it could be any Pokemon that learns the TM in the last slot, but I failed to mention that in the edit. It's in the Live Commentary though
You probably already know, but Gen 3 has a similar HP bug that is even easier to set up. Since Gen 3 also has a move that scales with your current HP, it also triggers a damage overflow bug.
I want to see someone like Scott do this now, because this is a really cool idea. It does feel that the minimum battles format is a bit restrictive for these two, since the routing in any sort of speedrun for these two would be nuts.
The issue is that because your stats change every time you level up, and you level up every time your EXP group changes, there is actually no better routing than Minimum Battles with these Pokemon.
Yeah, these are fun. I have seen others do Rom hacks just using the sprite, but I couldn't find anyone doing legit solo runs of the original glitchmon. Had to do it and figure them out!
Would've been such a perfect run for Halloween night imo! The reason why there's no Lord Helix fossil actually makes sense if you think about it, as it's the true superior fossil in gen 1. The other 2 have corpse versions while the true Lord does not.
He has ascended beyond death and therefore has no fossil. LOL This would have bee excellent for Halloween, but it wasn't ready yet unfortunately. Spent too much time sorting out the mechanics to use my early runs, which both took twice as log with tons of optional battles before I understood how these fossil glitchmons really worked.

to avoid the rydon glich you need to change your starter into cubone, that will reduce your minimun battles as well because you will need to capture only 1 mssingno
How do rare candies interact with your base stats changing on level up to the last Pokémon you beat? Even if you can’t force a BST change outside of battle, you can use them to control which Pokémon you level up against and try to select for high BST Pokémon with good EXP groups (and therefore high levels). 🤔 EDIT: You may also be able to time your rare candy usage to get more EXP. I haven’t done the math yet, but I suspect that for any given EXP total, the EXP to next level will vary with EXP group. The trick is that the groups with the highest EXP to next level will also be at the lowest levels, so I’m not sure where the sweet spots are.
I decided to allow Earthquake since Aerodactyl learns it in later gens and Kabutops gets the fairly similar Earth Power in later gens, both Pokemon should have gotten Rock Slide, and then just allowed both to get Swords Dance for balance. Also, I've already done the Kabutops run, so didn't want it to be exactly the same.
"Smart" AI would do that, however only a few trainers in the game have "Smart" AI. Random trainers tend to have random AI, meaning they select their moves at random. It's why you'll see pokemon like Brock's Onix, who has random AI, will use Screech even though your defense is already at the lowest possible amount.
How many turns does it take for it to die? We must investigate with top men... Oak's Aide is on the case! (because we know Oak is just chilling letting kids do his work for him)
Assuming you've already thought of this, but just in case - about the weird thing with the type-changing being only the display and not the actual type, is it possible that would be different on an emulator vs original hardware?
As far as I can tell, the typing is stored in two different memory addresses and only the one is being changes. I will try on hardware to confirm though!
Love video thank you no love for Omastar I guess. tough break lol 😂. I did my own minimum battle fire Red run . All can say I no matter how cool charzard looks. I wouldn't recommend picking this on zero IV . With starting with charmender. I managed beat pokemon league and end up with lvl 69 charzard
Yeah, Kanto hates Fire and Rock types the most! I did manage minimum battles in Yellow, but it required three consecutive misses from Hydro Pump from Lance's Gyarados and the Badge Boost Glitch to achieve....
@RBYPokemonChallenges only walls I hit was misty , Gary starter pokemon and Lorelei . Don't remember what I did beat lance gyarados .but yes hydro pump very annoying. Maybe i didn't have best moves for charzard . Fact that lorelei spams mostly water moves on you. her dewgong beefy boy lol 😆
Isn’t there a gen 1 glitch that lets you use the guy that brings you to Brock’s gym to skip the cave and head straight to cerulean? Wouldn’t you need to do that for super minimum battles?
The issue is that that is a glitch and not a sequence break. The HM pokemon can be legitimately traded in, the Fresh Water can be legitimately transferred with Stadium 2, and the Pokedoll Exploit (according to speedrunners) is legitimate.
@@gameygeemer4142 I was just thinking if you skipped Mt. Moon you could avoid all of the mandatory battles inside there and get back to Pewter with Cut.
The String Shotting is simply due to you spamming Agility. In Gen I, the AI will always go for a super-effective move, and in case it doesn't have any, will then spam a status move (reason why if you get hit by Hypnosis and wake up the next turn, it will spam Hypnosis over and over and over until you stay asleep), and in this case, speed; since you increase your speed by 2 stages and String Shot only decreases it by one, you are always ahead by one stage, therefore it will almost always go for String Shot. Like 95% of the time, until it runs out of PP. This is due to the game trying to balance itself, by redropping your speed to a point where you have equal or less speed than it. Weird coding of Gen I
I'm pretty sure Bug Catchers are just programmed to attack randomly in Gen 1 though. I think them trying to manage our stat changes doesn't happen until Gen 2, but I could be wrong.
I wonder how present would hypothetically work on a pokemon effected with the hp underflow glitch. Like, theoretically itd be the PERFECT counter to the underflow glitch since the chance to heal then use a better move to ko the now normal healthed mon
I know that I am relatively new to this channel, but is there a reason why rare candies don’t count against the Pokémon? I notice that you mention minimum exp on occasion and rare candies increase your exp
@@RBYPokemonChallenges I look forward to the added challenge of no rare candies! I think that at least 1 mon will be able to do a super minimum with no TMs or candies or setup moves. If a mon can do this, they deserve a S+ ranking (assuming there is not a ridiculous amount of resets)
I mean, we couldn't do any damage. For a no damaging moves run you need Confuse Ray or Supersonic, Screech, and ideally a backup like Toxic or Leech Seed
Not to cast aspersions on the stars of the show here, but I'm hard-pressed to think of ANY Pokémon that wouldn't be S-tier if it literally never had to worry about fainting. (Save for against Giovanni's Fissure Dugtrio.) If you took that away, I get the feeling that these would be VERY not-good. They seem to be incredibly frail, and the constant changes in stats certainly don't help.
As far as I understood it a candy wouldn't have helped. He needed to level up against a Pokemon with a lower hp-base stat than the Pokemon he is using. If he'd use a rare candy he just would have leveled up without the glitch since his HP would actually increase
I tested that as well as trying to use the Box Trick. Unfortunately the infinite health glitch can only be setup in battle by having low health and levelling up *or down) against a mon that results in a lower max HP after the level.
Just starting to watch so this might've been addressed later or in a previous vid and I just missed it, but noticing smth in the bug catcher fight: why do you leave the run timer running when you're pausing the game completely to deliver commentary? Seems like a bit of an unfair handicap on the mon, idk
I did the same in both cases ( both videos have a live commentary where I am breaking down the same things linked in the description). So there is little if any difference in the two runs due to this. That said, you raise a fair point and I'll be more careful of that in the future
Can you use rest while in the “infinite” health glitch? I’d assume not because it would be considered full by some bizarre standard. I don’t understand computer science.
You could, but you'd have the same thing happen that Absorb did near the start of the video: his HP would "deplete" until it gets to his actual maximum, then Rest would force his pokemon to fall asleep.
What I'm guessing happens is that all the 'healing' moves have a routine that looks at the HPmax parameter to ensure they don't heal over that point. If the move is used when not equal to HPmax then it recovers, but only up to HPmax, regardless of what HPcurr is. With the underflow glitch, HPcurr is way above max, but isn't AT max, so the move can trigger, but then the game tells it that if HPcurr + recovery > HPmax, set HPcurr to HPmax.
I could do it with Gamehook, but the justification for the Fresh Water is that it can legally be transferred via Stadium 2, but the Pokeflute is a Key item and cannot be transferred/
Toxic's damage is calculated based on your maximum hp, like burn or poison. Unlike burn or poison, however, Toxic's damage stacks. Many think it doubles each turn, but that's not correct: If toxic's first tick is 8 damage, the 2nd tick is 16, 3rd is 24, 4th is 32, 5th is 40, and so on. So even though toxic would do stacking damage and defeat a pokemon very quickly, if the HP underflow glitch is active, it will take far longer than usual.
I think the SkullKid's explanation is correct. However, we could never get Toxic from Koga with either Pokemon because Rock resists Poison and he has "Smart AI". So the only potential case to even get hit by it would be Agatha's Golbat, and she was a joke in this one.
I believe I had this happen before, but since I can't remember, I'll explain it in a way that makes sense to what the game would do: A 1 hit KO move that is successful would forcibly set your HP to 0, meaning he would either have to reset immediately, or he could sit there and wait for all of his massive HP bar to deplete, which based on its drain rate could take a few minutes.
Luckily right before a fight with the lowest hp pokemon even till today iirc is a pretty good spot to mess up an hp glitch that needs you to level up on a low hp pokemon lol
Yeah, we needed to really manage where the level up to get the glitch to go and since on minimum battles we have a free heal in the midgame, finding the spot to reset it was important.
Bulbapedia kinda sucks, in general, for anything besides raw moveset lists and such taken straight out of the games. The policy of not acknowledging pop culture references in Pokemon designs makes my head hurt since Pokemon has blatantly taken from tokusatsu and other Japanese media since the beginning. What they count as "notable trivia" is also arbitrary as hell. But also someone's probably already mentioned this, but if Bulbapedia is wrong - change it! It's a wiki, after all.
For sure. I don't know all the background, or the moderation process for making changes, I just found it funny to find a section that is blatantly wrong.

EDIT: You may also be able to time your rare candy usage to get more EXP. I haven’t done the math yet, but I suspect that for any given EXP total, the EXP to next level will vary with EXP group. The trick is that the groups with the highest EXP to next level will also be at the lowest levels, so I’m not sure where the sweet spots are.
This ewas exactly what I ended up doing using RCs for Lord Dome against Sabrina.
Wouldn't it have made sense just to give them the standard TM move sets for kabutops and aerodactyl?
I decided to allow Earthquake since Aerodactyl learns it in later gens and Kabutops gets the fairly similar Earth Power in later gens, both Pokemon should have gotten Rock Slide, and then just allowed both to get Swords Dance for balance. Also, I've already done the Kabutops run, so didn't want it to be exactly the same.
Aww
I was very curious about toxic
We could just reset on Agatha's Golbat until we get it.
that thumbnail is sick
Thank you, I was having fun playing with glitch effects lol
That Caterpie is probably trying to counter the Agility that you are setting up before it finally Tackled.
Caterpie in Viridian Forest is a God, though. He destroyed Alakazam, Gloom, and crushed my glitchmons with his String Shots multiple times each.
I am curious about Toxic Poison with that HP glitch. Due to the fact it increases in strength every turn will Toxic eventually KO you?
How many turns does it take for it to die? We must investigate with top men... Oak's Aide is on the case! (because we know Oak is just chilling letting kids do his work for him)
i realized what was going on in the 8th gym. Lord domes HP went so low that it rapped back around to full HP as he oonly had 65535HP
Naw, I accidentally healed I. Viridian. The result was already basically decided though
you broke my mind mid-game
thank you
Awesome, glad you enjoyed!
@RBYPokemonChallenges only walls I hit was misty , Gary starter pokemon and
Lorelei . Don't remember what I did beat lance gyarados .but yes hydro pump very annoying. Maybe i didn't have best moves for charzard . Fact that lorelei spams mostly water moves on you. her dewgong beefy boy lol 😆
Yes LETS GO!! You always have such great ideas for Pokemon runs.
Thank you, this one was fun and I learned a lot about weird mechanics
Isn’t there a gen 1 glitch that lets you use the guy that brings you to Brock’s gym to skip the cave and head straight to cerulean? Wouldn’t you need to do that for super minimum battles?
The issue is that that is a glitch and not a sequence break. The HM pokemon can be legitimately traded in, the Fresh Water can be legitimately transferred with Stadium 2, and the Pokedoll Exploit (according to speedrunners) is legitimate.
Also, even ignoring that, you still need to get the Boulder Badge in order to get into Victory Road
@@gameygeemer4142 I was just thinking if you skipped Mt. Moon you could avoid all of the mandatory battles inside there and get back to Pewter with Cut.
Gen 1 Pokémon was programmed on hopes and dreams
A world of Dreams and Adventures with Pokemon awaits...
I used Silly String all the time as a kid
It was great, wasn't it?
@@RBYPokemonChallenges It was so much fun
@@RBYPokemonChallenges Well you could be right too, but you were pretty unlucky if that's the case ;P
I wonder how present would hypothetically work on a pokemon effected with the hp underflow glitch. Like, theoretically itd be the PERFECT counter to the underflow glitch since the chance to heal then use a better move to ko the now normal healthed mon
That would be very interesting to try
I know that I am relatively new to this channel, but is there a reason why rare candies don’t count against the Pokémon? I notice that you mention minimum exp on occasion and rare candies increase your exp
I allow them because there are limited in a playthrough, but a no rare candies variant of these runs is likely coming on the future
TOMBSTONER, BROTHER!
Perfect!
Do you think you could beat it with a Slowbro with no damaging moves using the HP underflow glitch?
I mean, we couldn't do any damage. For a no damaging moves run you need Confuse Ray or Supersonic, Screech, and ideally a backup like Toxic or Leech Seed
I could have sworn there was an Omanyte fossil Missingno too. Am I insane? Or were you just using the fully evolved fossils?
MissingNo only has 5 forms: 2 glitch, one ghost and the Aerodactyl and Kabutops fossils. An Omastar form would be pretty cool though!
I will Lord Helix were represented. Maybe a Mandela Effect?
Can you please talk more about your PP. I really like when you talk about your Harden PP.
Haha, no need for PP when you have the invincible hard body of a fossil glitchmon
The overlay not updating is fitting.
Yeah, I mentioned it in the unedited live commentary video, but these glitchmons completely broke my overlay.
Not to cast aspersions on the stars of the show here, but I'm hard-pressed to think of ANY Pokémon that wouldn't be S-tier if it literally never had to worry about fainting. (Save for against Giovanni's Fissure Dugtrio.)
If you took that away, I get the feeling that these would be VERY not-good. They seem to be incredibly frail, and the constant changes in stats certainly don't help.
I have runs of both without god-health and yeah, it's rough....
At 35 minutes in when you were trying to regain the hp glitch would the rare candy have made you regain the glitch?
A Pokémon with that many HP being hit with a OHKO move sounds both funny and boring.
Yes, but we must do it once for science
Quality UA-cam content here folks
Thank you, Philip!
Yeahnything that recovers health causes the health bar to go back to normal. which can take a massive amount of time in battle.
There's a glitch in The Cartridge 🤣🤣
I think my game is permanently broken now.... I seem to be unkillable...
Is it actually possible to get those lavender town ghosts on your team?
Yeah, you just need to use the Trainer Fly glitch with a Hex value of B8
@@RBYPokemonChallenges oh that's cool. Can they actually be hit like a normal pokemon?
I love your content so much!
Thank you so much!
Whats that song during the start with the giitar riff?
Approximate timestamp?
F35 is something like 3800 hp
I guess that's assuming it is using hexadecimal when handling larger numbers lol.. or pokedecimals
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's hex which means the HP goes completely insane at that point.
What if you hooked in a pokeflute and skip lavendar?
I could do it with Gamehook, but the justification for the Fresh Water is that it can legally be transferred via Stadium 2, but the Pokeflute is a Key item and cannot be transferred/
Wait, still really early in the video but what happens with toxic if you have that glitched HP?
Looks like it might just reduce hp based on what it should be not what it actually is. But I have no idea either.
What happens if you get hit with a 1 hit KO move with the health glitch?
I believe I had this happen before, but since I can't remember, I'll explain it in a way that makes sense to what the game would do: A 1 hit KO move that is successful would forcibly set your HP to 0, meaning he would either have to reset immediately, or he could sit there and wait for all of his massive HP bar to deplete, which based on its drain rate could take a few minutes.
Yeah, i Gen 1 OHKO moves do 65535 damage, so i would KO but take a massive amount of time to run off the HP.
@RBYPokemonChallenges I meant more neat the end with the accidental pokecenter before giovanni
29:09 Lavender is Rival 5 not Rival 4
I and a lot of other runners call it Rival 4 because the fight West of Viridian is optional, therefore I rarely do itt

Confused as why they have sprite work
The game uses thesesprites in the Pewter City Museum. They were coded in as Pokemon, but have only the front-sprite data.
@@RBYPokemonChallenges so many of my questions have been answered - gen 1 is so quirky lol
