You seem pretty knowledgeable about this game, but did you (or somebody else) ever look into how booster pack rarity works? (in this game and its sequel)
I wanted to know if cards of each specific rarity just as likely to appear as the other cards of the same rarity?
or... are there scenarios where it's not random (i.e. with the Energy Cards you receive from booster packs), or if it's RNG based on the trainer you defeated to earn the booster pack, your character's name, or even other factors? As a kid, I would've sworn that some "Rare" cards were a lot easier to collect than others, but never knew if it was just luck

Because Switch Online allows multiplayer, the TCG game may actually have most of its connectivity stuff reactivated. I imagine the only things that might be disabled are Card Pop and Printing.
The other thing is that the player character's Japanese name is more than likely a play on the word "Pack", as in booster pack.

Amazing video, this game definitely has a ton of interesting quirks.
One small correction, tho. Near the start, you were saying that different clubs have packs that contain the energy of their club. That is not the full story. The packs actually have an overall preference for the type corresponding with their club. For example in the Grass club, the packs are more likely to contain Grass type Pokémon. So if you are missing a card of a specific type, it's recommended to grind at the club that matches with that type.

another detail that i don't think was mentioned here, but i still think is neat: the second game's win and loss sprites are multipurpose. the win sprite appears after your opponent draws cards and the lose sprite appears between turns when you're on your last prize card. not sure if their sprite changes if they're on their last prize card, but i'll update when i find out :)
edit: it does change when they're on their last card! also, it appears to be kind of random if they'll show a win sprite after drawing? sometimes they'll show win sprites, sometimes they'll show loss sprites, sometimes it's neutral. kinda like how sometimes you get a card you want, sometimes you get a card that's useless to your situation, and sometimes it's neither of those

Oh man, I was speedrunning this game when the Down+A glitch was discovered. Absolutely changed the speedrun and it made the game have to have separate categories for the first time ever!

A shame that they never made more games like Pokemon TCG after the sequel for Japan-only. I’d have loved to have seen one for GBA and DS for the Gens 2, 3 and 4 expansions. I get that after Black and White, Pokemon TCG Online would become a thing and just be a TCG simulator using real life booster packs, but it makes me wonder what the series would have been like with RPG elements.

Growing up in a town where everyone played magic the gathering only.. this and yu gi oh sacred cards (gba) were nice introductions to the card games.

I distinctly remember the START and SELECT based shortcuts being something I used extensively, but i don't know whether they were explained to me somewhere in the game's manual, or I intuited them from playing other games where START or SELECT would bring up a help-bubble pertaining to whatever you're pointing at in other games of the time (eg: Ogre Battle 64).
I have a non-glitch guaranteed win strategy from my GBC days. If your deck only contains 4 Pikachu and 4 Raichu with that one electric attack that hits 'mon on your opponents' bench, and then a bunch of support cards like healing, you can't lose! When you start, you'll keep shuffling until you get your pikachu. All you gotta do is keep it fighting-fit until you get a Raichu and enough energy to start putting on the hurt, and your opponent might already have three bench-mon for you to take out. And if they don't? You'll win before even having to collect all the prizes! Even if your opponents have cards that resist electric, the damage to bench pokemon is unconditional!

Hmm.. I'm gonna have to grind in the electric club so I can try this strategy lol

@@subtledemisefoxI ran a variant with the non-GB exclusive Electrode. That card has chain lightning (hit cards on the bench for 10 if they match the active Pokémon’s type), which is cheaper than Raichu’s Gigashock and has a second basic attack to bridge the gap until you get the needed energy. I ran that with energy removal and gust of wind to knock out bench Pokemon that were getting powered up. No need for healing items in that set up.

@@RiverM8rix oh damn! Thanks for that! I started playing the translated sequel so I dropped the original for a bit. I might have a reason to go back now

Card Pop drives me so insane. The fact that the last 2 cards are basically impossible to get because of card pop. I'd love to 100% this game but basically it's impossible.

3:20 I think the packs also give more pokemon of the energy type they given an energy card for.
You can still get other kinds of pokemon but you get more of the specific type.
