@@peterwilliams6239 I second that. I lived in Northern Ontario when Talking Heads 77 came out and it was the music magazines covering the New York new wave/punk scene that had us discover them. For me, The Great Curve is the culmination of the funk experiments they started with I Zimbra and followed up with My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, Born Under Punches and Crosseyed And Painless. The Great Curve is all of that honed to perfection. The overlying of sounds, textures, voices and rhythms, all impeccably intertwined and adding up to a beautiful whole. I love that track ❤
@@Grizazzle yeah, Eno produced it. He and David Byrne also put out a side project together, "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts", which has a similar ethno-techno kind of thing going on, like RIL.
“Crosseyed and Painless” and “The Great Curve” from the same album are two of their best songs. My favorite band in the ‘70s/‘80s. Saw them a bunch of times. Favorite concert was at the Philadelphia Zoo. Unforgettable
Jay & Amber, You'll love their "Crosseyed And Painless" and "Cities" !!! "Crosseyed And Painless" is from the same album as todays song, and "Cities" is from the same album as "Life During Wartime".
The mix of technology sounds and African polyrythyms was really innovative at the time. And that vibe continues through the entire album. Big kudos for getting Adrian Belew on guitar!
This album has such a hazy overwhelming late night to feel to it. Like a memory from a visit to New York far far back in the 70s you are not sure ever happened.
This record is the peak they reached working with Brian Eno, producer and a de-facto 5th member of the band at the time. He and David Byrne made a record together around the same period called "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts," in which all the vocals are sampled from various sources. EXCELLENT choice.
@@ltdada agreed. Eno and Byrne's solo collaboration is one of the best "found sounds" albums I've heard. Not easy listening, but delectable nonetheless...
Tina is tearing that bass up!!! Wow!!! Love it!!! The African Funk sound and beat is soooooo great!!!! And message talking about the government and the common man!!!!
Sweet! Remain In Light was one of my favorite albums back when it was new and I've been listening to it ever since. "Born Under Punches" starts off the album putting the avant-garde sound right up front while the lyrics catch up. "All I want is to breathe \ Won't you breathe with me?"
Saw them on this tour when I was at UC Berkeley. Pals from the dorm and I dropped acid and walked to the show which was on campus. Talking Heads musicians alone were great but adding Adrien Belew and others for this album and tour was pure genius. Awesome show. Nona Hendryx from LaBelle sings on this.
I got this album when I was 18 and a few second’s into it, my face changed and I’ve been a different & better person ever since. Love your videos and thanks for always bringing positivity & awesomeness into my day.
This album "Remain in Light" is in my opinion by far their best. Its a dead serious album, much darker than the others - but SUBLIME. "Wind in My Heart" is a stunningly beautiful, mysterious and vivid story - a painting of words and sounds.
Amber gettin’ a little Brian Eno-produced TH up in her. Love this whole album. So funky. So ethereal. So Talking Heads. It’s still on my playlist. Love and peace to the whole Robinson family. ❤
Nice to hear you cover a deeper cut. Probably my favorite Talking Heads song. I hope you do Nothing But Flowers next. Still waiting for you to do another Midnight Oil song. I would recommend "Blue Sky Mine." There's still a Seattle grunge band you haven't heard -- Screaming Trees. "Nearly Lost You" is a good song to start with.
You guys have done Parlament a few times and they had one of the pioneers of synthesizer and Funk keyboard Bernie Worrell. Bernie in the 80's started playing with Talking Heads. Bernie was never an official member of Talking Heads but recorded and toured with them. Bernie Worell was also known as The Wizard of Woo!!!!
Talking Heads can be super hypnotic. I feel like Talking Heads and Pink Floyd have a similar experience in how they transport you somewhere else and the world around you just drops away, time stops moving, and colors begin to flood your mind!
Talking Heads are one of my favorite bands. I picked up their first album, Talking Heads ‘77, when it came out when I was 16 and I’ve seen them live numerous times. Remain In Light draws influences from Fela Kuti, African polyrhythms and funk. I believe it’s the best album released in 1980. All these years later it’s still an incredible piece of work that bears repeat listening.
This was the opener to their Remain In Light album. They were working with Eno and getting further into a funk sound. A number of the tracks on Remain In Light were built from loops with the vocal melodies and some leads dubbed over. The album also featured solos from Adrian Belew on guitar, who you should check out some time. But I think you should go back to the live "Stop Making Sense" show and pull out "Girlfriend Is Better."
This is where Talking Heads branched out into the more adventurous territory they were always playing with. On this album, they created densely layered loops and experimented with the concept of repetition. The result is this hypnotic, percussive and more expansive sound that gets better with each listen. This track in particular would be a standout but there are so many great ones on this album, they’re all killer. Even their homage to Joy Division (which-according to legend-they recorded after reading a review about the band but hadn’t heard their music yet). Excellent album.
Back the day, we all heard about this band from someone else, and had to discover them like you’re doing now. Cool to watch you guys find the way we did.
You did a song by Tom Tom Club, a group founded by Talking Heads drummer and bass player, Chris Franz and his bassist wife Tina Weymouth. You should do another Tom Tom Club reaction! 😉👍
For something completely different, check out his collaboration with Brian Eno, called "Life in the Bush of Ghosts". They sampled unusual clips from allsorts, and used the clips as the rhythm section, for instance. Very inventive, like this amazing song, which is new to me. Loved it y'all. Have David Byrne on your show. And Eno. Hell, you had Fripp, already, and he is the more obscure. I'm gonna will it to happen. :)
"The Great Curve" from the same album, you'll be trippin'! The world moves on a woman's hips, you'll be dancing! Be sure to get the studio version. Adrien Belew on guitar will change your world. Peace & Love
This is definitely a remastered version, none the less, one of their best tunes, so creative, you both are right. Remain in Light is a fantastic album. To me one notch under "More Songs about Buildings and Food" Talking Heads are still one of my top five artists all time.
I feel you haven't really explored the funky and world music-influenced side of Talking Heads, which is one of their best characteristics. I Zimbra, Pull Up the Roots, Mr. Jones, Blind, Swamp. Some really cool stuff you haven't hit yet.
Always have loved their Hits! But have to admit I don't believe I've ever purchased any of their music. So I haven't heard this one, but it's Cool!! Very unique and interesting to listen to. I was trying to hear, as Amber says 'the picture they're creating', but didn't pick it up... old-man hearing probably part of the problem. Great Reaction, You Guys! Have a Great Week! :) PS- Thanks Amber for your take on 'the picture'... :)
Another great 80s choice Jay and Amber. A couple of artists you should react to again that were popular during the 80s are New Order and Depeche Mode. From New Order listen to the version of "Bizarre Love Triangle" from the Substance album and Depeche Mode's live version of "I Just Can't Get Enough" from DM 101. I know you reacted to the studio version, but you haven't really heard that song until you hear the live DM 101 version. Thanks for all you do, blessings!

Is this not the album that invented the genre of "World Music?" Paul Simon's "Graceland" gets all the credit, but I always think "Remain in Light" opened the door. As genius as the band is, gotta give a lot of love to producer Brian Eno, too.
They certainly didn't "invent" world music but they helped bring a version of it to the states. Simon actually used musicians from Africa and Brazil to create albums.
Released in 1980. The sounds could have been from 1993. This album was so influential to many different genres including Hip-Hop. The use of tape loops lead to the way samplers were later used.
