Talking Heads is musical art. You never know what you're going to get with them. Jay described it perfectly...weirdly cool
They’re also a box of chocolates. 😉
@Sweetish_Jeff_2022 You never know what you're never gonna get! But, you love it!
Perfect description!
Mostly garbage.
I love to do food videos while smoking weed on my UA-cam channel, to cure people’s boredom 🙇♂️
Quintessential 80s, and exquisite opening bass…classic Talking Heads. David Byrne is considered one of the more creative minds in pop music history.
We were so lucky growing up in the 80s with Music like this.
Never thought of Talking Heads as pop...
@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT except its not. It's a Category, and as such, Talking Heads has never been listed in that Category. Under your definition all Country Music is Pop because it's Popular.
I hope they do the Heads' cover of "Take Me to the River". I want to inject Tina Weymouth's bassline into my veins...
Very poppy...sounds like a commercial
So glad you're doing this one!
"Road To Nowhere" from the same album is another one you have to give a go :)
Road to Nowhere is brilliant, only overshadowed by Psychokiller
Oh I love that song
That is my favorite one!
Many years ago, I created an art piece based on this song, showing the girl rising up above the planet, opening her arms to the stars. It was blue and white sandblasted glass, one of the best things I ever made.
Been waiting for this one for a while. This was written about a girl who used to cut class and lay in the grass at a power plant and trip. Even though it's about a trippy experience, it's one of their more straight forward songs lyrically.
Interesting, I never knew that.
I seem to recall there was a theory that the song was sung from the perspective of a murder victim. If you look at it that way, the lyrics also make sense.
Not suggesting that this is the "correct" interpretation; a quick Google search indicates you're correct.
Me too. Definitely my favourite Talking Heads song (although "Road to Nowhere" comes a close second). This is part of my personal favourite songs mix. Cutting grass under the influence of a psychedelic drug strikes me as a probable recipe for disaster but obviously it worked for her! I love this as a catchy road trip sort of song. Works for me 😁
From the website SongFacts -
"According to David Byrne, who is the only writer credited on the track, this was written about a girl he knew who used to take LSD in a field next to the Yoo-Hoo drink factory in Baltimore. "Somehow that image seemed fitting, the junk food factory and this young girl tripping her brains out gazing at the sky," he told Q magazine in 1992. "But it wasn't a drugs song at all and I don't think people took it that way. I think it gives the impression of a spiritual or emotional experience, instantaneous and unprovoked. The sublime can come out of the ridiculous."
before hearing this, i liked to picture it being about fenchurch from hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. : )
Taking Heads is definitely one of the coolest bands ever. And David Byrne is the reason why
Agreed 👍
Tina rocks!!!
Agreed. Big crush on David, but I got to shout out Tina just because I feel her base lines are so underrated
Maybe, but he hasn't been too interesting without The Heads. Together they were better.
@@O_Towne_Bear I'd argue that he has been very interesting without them. They were great together but their collaboration had run its course. And personally, I'd rather have records like Rei Momo, Look Into The Eyeball or Everything That Happens Will Happen Today, than a hypothetical new Talking Heads album. I count David Byrne among the few pop/rock artists (like say Robert Plant or Peter Gabriel) that left behind a famous group and have managed to keep evolving and making interesting music instead resting on their laurels.
You guys need to check out their live performance of Life During Wartime from the Stop Making Sense concert. You won't be disappointed
That's been in my head all day.
The most energetic video they have!
See if you can match their energy. Here's a link:
m.ua-cam.com/video/jShMQw2H2cM/v-deo.html
YES! I second this suggestion - it's amazing!
ive been saying it for months hahahaha its the best of the lot, road to no where next then i think thats it for the pop song type, you want quirky life during wartime, this aint no pateh this aint no disco, classic
The "Talking Heads" gets better with age, and I am thankful that I am here to appreciate them.
From the Little Creatures album in 1985, David Byrne said the song was about a girl he used to know in Baltimore, who took LSD, and would lie in the grass outside the YooHoo Drink Factory. He said she would lie there staring at the clouds oblivious to the rest of the world.
This song made it to Number 54 on the BillBoard Hot 100 and was never performed live.
With the wonderful pulsing of the drums, great guitars and vocals, it was a great tune. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦
Pure art. When weird musicians, write weird lyrics, use their instruments in weird ways, do weird dances, wear weird clothes, and create weird performances that match . . . it's weirdly perfect.
The Talking Heads come from my home town of Providence RI. They met and came together at Rhode Island School of Design. One of the prime art College in the world. At the time of there career, the 80s they were considered Progressive Rock.
You know how you have something to eat or drink for the first time in weeks or months and it tastes so much better than you ever realized? That’s what this song is like. I’m listening to this song with earbuds and it sounds phenomenal. Better than I ever imagined. So happy and thrilled that I get to join this journey with Amber and Jay and all of you.
I was listening to “Wild Wild Life” by Talking Heads yesterday. Great song and video.
One hundred percent!
Once In A Lifetime is their song you didn’t care for. “Same as it ever was” was a popular saying when that was on the radio. When this song came on the radio we always cranked it up!
The Talking Heads were really big in the 80s, very performance art style, unique but catchy. Burnin Down the House was huge, Psycho Killer etc. This one is great, too. We had excellent music across genres, not just one type.
I was only a kid in the eighties but I love music and it took this band 25 years to slowly become my favorite but now I can't go a week without listening to him David Byren is amazing whether hes with Talking Heads or solo
If you're looking for another odd, quirky band, I recommend They Might Be Giants. Their signature song is "Birdhouse in Your Soul," but they have A TON of gems.
Istanbul not Constantinople ...
Particle Man
ooooo toughie birdhouse defo istanbul mmmm nay bad erm like weird one igna ra or summit, that cool but think they dried up quick
"Don't Let's Start"! "Ana Ng"! "Dr. Worm"! So many great songs, and today (2/23) is their 40th anniversary as a band
Their kids album was the bomb! That's how my kids learned her ABC 's
Met David Byrne working at a record store in NY. Very nice. Signed an autograph while I rang him up. TalkingHeads is all 80’s and pure art.
OMG I just watched your reaction to Al Green's "Take Me to the River" WHICH The Talking Heads covered, so fall down the Talking Heads rabbit hole!
Everyone in the band were art students and actually met in art college. That’s why all their music and videos are so abstract. It’s their intention to make everything they do artsy and abstract.
One of the best Art Schools in the world! Rhode Island School of Design
You guys should listen to "Stay Up Late" and dedicate it to Luca! It is about a little baby boy who has an older sister (or two!). It is an adorable song about a cute baby boy! The girls will love it, too!
It would pair well with Little Creatures!
I suggested it when he was first born. You mean they still haven't got around to it?
Talking Heads is like the music version of David Lynch. It’s quirky, weird, from out of left field, and you often scratch your head, but it’s so good and unlike anything else out there.
You are so correct to make that comparison.
@@pattimurphyrocks omg so true he done that weird series in 80s, absolutely nuts but brill, argggghhhhh cant think of it, name of a town in america i think, going to do my swede in, google it, twin peaks yeah
Great analogy, never thought of that!
@@mr.j9176 Twin Peaks was awesome, After the series, they made the movie Fire Walk With Me. My friend and I were vacationing in the Pacific Northwest and went to all the Twin Peaks landmarks and basically came upon the film crew. We watched them film and even met David Lynch and Kiefer Sutherland. We were there when they filmed the scenes with Chris Isaac and Harry Dean Stanton.
They totally need to react to Mulholland Drive on the movie reaction channel!
This is my favorite Talking Heads songs. I dated one guy in college for over a year, and this was our song. I used to wash floors to earn extra money back then, and there was a jukebox in one of the rooms and it played songs for free. I just set it to repeat and danced my way through washing that floor every week.
What a coincidence I just sent you guys their cover of Take Me to the River.I never knew Al Green sang the original.
They covered Al Green's "Take Me to the River"! Funny how the universe syncs sometimes.
What a cool, well-written pop song.
I actually thought you were going to do their version of Take Me to the River 🤣🤣🤣
So did I. After everyone talking about it under the Al Green post.
It’s a must.
The Talking heads actually did A very good version of Take Me To The River... a song you just reacted to by Al Green
The Talking Heads......one of the most unique & interesting bands EVER !!!
You guys are definitely covering grounds in music and I love that about you two! I'm a drummer and my first interest of music was listening to and reading music that was orchestrated and also symphony.. with all that said it led me through the same journey of finding music and eventually becoming lover of anything that moves me no matter what genre! I'm impressed with all your other likes and fan comments and ones who have suggested these songs. Great variety! Great reviews! 🤘 Rock on!! 🤘
One of the best bands ever. Stop Making Sense is the album I'd want on a deserted island. 😎👍🏼
I don’t know if you guys are reading comments anymore I haven’t seen too many hearts given out but I still love watching you guys, so I’m gonna try again I really really really would like to see you react to the Beatles Helter skelter or Back in the USSR
Linda Ronstadt did a great cover of Back in the USSR 🥰
That guitar lick at the end is what hooked me into this song - great stuff.
You just did Al Green ‘Take Me To The River’. Talking Heads cover of ‘Take Me To The River’ is fabulous. It’s the perfect time to react to it and compare it to the Al Green version ( it’s one of their best covers believe me! )
Saw The Talking Heads twice. Amazing!
You do not have to like all the songs you listen to, but I'm very glad you enjoyed this one. 🐬🦋😁
This was the era of "art bands", Lori Andersen, Bowie of course, and many others.
✨
Talking Heads has a great New Wave sound along with the other bands you mentioned. Glad you love this sound. Thanks very much. Blessings and happiness!
I love them so much! They pushed boundaries with their art. My mom introduced me to them in the 80s and i was hooked! My mom was such a huge fan of David Byrne . She always commented on how much she loved his dancing 😂
I shared great moments with my mom through them. RIP mamá.
I am so excited you found the Talking Heads. So many addictive hits.
Talking Heads were definitely one of the more original bands to come from the mid 70's New York punk/ new wave explosion (that also spawned Blondie and The Ramones). This album ("Little Creatures") was a high point from 1985- this song, "Road To Nowhere", "Stay Up Late"- just hit after hit of modern pop goodness, after a 3-year hiatus of the members working on other projects (David Byrne with his solo work and multiple collaborations, and Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz's work w/ Tom Tom Club).
Stay up late is a great song!!!
Wife here.., Can never go wrong with Talking Heads and they're from the U.S..!..As MOST of New Wave/Synth Rock bands were from England!!!...Great Reaction!!!👍🌹
Amber and J ... I was laughing hysterically 😂🤣😂🤣 at you two reminiscing and going through all of the Talking Heads songs!! Ha ha ❤️ I Love it!! @RobSquadReactions
No.way!? Now you do Talking Heads after just dropping Al Green's Take Me to the River? You have to do that one next!
"And She Was" feels like a happier song for them. Still quirky and a great use of "hey hey hey!"
So, you also did Al Green's "Take Me to the River" today. Were you aware that Talking Heads recorded a cover of that song?
Jay &Amber, You'll love their "Life During Wartime", "Take Me To The River" and "Crosseyed And Painless"!!!
Would have been awesome to have done their "Take Me To The River" back to back with Al Green's!
Definitely - especially "Take Me To The River" and "Crosseyed And Painless"!
ye crosseyed, lost my shape trying to act casual, i cant stop mightr end up in the hospital, these days facts are bloody few, who new eh
Don't think they've done Nothing But Flowers yet...
My favorite Talking Heads song!
I listen to it when I’ve had a stressful day where everything went wrong. For me, she’s rising up above her problems and into a zen peaceful state. Another song that helps me this way is I Can See Clearly Now sung by Jimmy Cliff. My mood always rises with both songs.
This whole album, Little Creatures is amazing. The Lady Don’t Mind is another killer song from this album. Come to think of it so Television Man and Road To Nowhere.
I was never a big fan of 80’s new wave music, but Talking Heads have some pretty catchy and dare I say it, enjoyable tunes, and this one is at the top of the list IMO.
LOL! I love that song you can’t vibe with. Maybe it’s just something us 70’s/80’s kids truly get and get even more so now that we are in our 60’s and beyond.
I didn't know what too think about these guys at first... Then I saw them in concert, an amazing and unique performance!!
Y’all, this would be an insanely long reaction, but David Byrne and St. Vincent in concert is on another level
you have to watch the entire film Stop Making Since to truly appreciate this band . One of the most important concert documentaries in music history.
Epic song from my era!! Another epic song is Something about you from Level 42 😁😁
Great band
@RobSquadReactions3 stop with your scams
Hearing this song took me back and reminded me of another song. Y'all need to check out an 80s band called the Hooters and start with "And We Danced." This is such a happy, peppy song. I'm sure the DJs of our local radio station got tired of me calling every day after school to request it. Haha. But after a long day of 9th grade, this song was needed!.
So true, they will love to explore the Hooters.
Another good starting song: Johnny B
The Ultimate In Sarcasm & A MUST HEAR Classic,, Talking Heads (Nothing But) "Flowers"
This song was written by the lead singer. It's about his neighbour who on a Sunday went out on to the grass and dropped LSD. True story. Love and peace.
One of my favorite groups ever. "Letting the Days Go By" is my favorite of their songs, but all the rest of that album follows closely behind. David Byrne is a musical genius.
You should checkout Take Me To The River. Edit: " weirdly cool group" well said Jay, i knew hard rockers in the 80s that liked Talking Heads. They were well received. Great band.
As many have stated their live concerts are all ways a visual delight. Got to see them at Red Rocks, Colorado's premier outdoor venue. Many suggestions. Love them all, like you guys. Joe Jackson, had a different sound each album. Thanks again.
Talking Heads covered Al Green's "Take Me To The River" which you just reacted to. The first time I ever heard them was when they appeared on Saturday Night Live in 1978. They did "Take Me To The River" and I was fascinated! It was funky, cool and so unique. I was hooked!! And in over 4 decades they have never let me down.
Talking Heads was a breath of fresh air in the 80's. They helped usher new wave in the us radio waves. They got help from being staples on MTV (back when mtv was relevant) was fun to see you both get to experience them.
“Nothing But Flowers”- my favorite of theirs,
Is very timely now subject matter all these years later, and it’s beautifully composed and arranged
You want an "Aha! moment? David Byrne is as they say, "on the spectrum." His music artistry and videos reflect that quite clearly. I was struck by all the comments, during the video and written by viewers about the song, the music, being "weird", "different", "quirky", and have to believe that many to most commenters didn't know that about Byrne. I love that Byrne became successful with his creativity as much as I have loved the music itself.
When David was a kid he was out walking around and ran across a lone, hippy woman tripping on acid in an open field and sat with her until it got dark. Thus, the song, magic stuff!
Stop Making Sense album (original press) still speaks to me all the way through, made me follow the oddness of the man's solo work and other collaborations, his head talks...💥💫❣️👍
ATTENTION!!! There is a Talking Heads movie that is quirky and funny and sometimes weird and sometimes charming called, "True Stories" that you really should do for a Film Friday episode (note: it is a David Byrne movie, featuring the music of Talking Heads).
I know it's been mentioned previously. I highly, highly recommend you guys watch the concert film, "Stop Making Sense" perhaps as a reaction. I guarantee you will love it!!! They had such an unbelievable approach to the start of that concert I had never seen or heard of any one else doing it besides them. It is just amazing and David Byrne is such a genius.
The Heads are always interesting...hey, they did a great cover of _Take Me To The River_ too! Y'all oughta give that a listen sometime.
Come to think, their award-winning concert film _Stop Making Sense_ would be a great movie watch on your other channel.
Beat me to it! ;)
In Honor & Memory Of Pauly Fuemana🙏❤
OMC "How Bizarre" (Official Music Video)
Saw Talking Heads in concert, they did not disappoint. My favorite was Burning down the House.
In the movie..Look Who's Talking!!! ❤💗❤ RIP Kirstie Alley. You were so Beautiful! 😔💔😥
Probably my favorite Talking Heads song. When I was in High School (many moons ago) I used to play this on the piano and my friend would accompany me on drums. I suck at the piano but still it was so fun!
Now you guys need to check out some YAZ!
My favorite Talking Heads song? “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)” … simply beautiful.
One of the most iconic songs of my college days.
J's spirit animal is Cow*Bell) LOL! You two and family are #1 in my book.
For your next TH reaction please check out "Road to Nowhere" and "Stay up Late". Two of my favorites you haven't done yet. Love you guys.
The kids would love their song
STAY UP LATE.
Please listen to once in a life! Roll down the windows and drive and crank up the greatest hits of the Talking Heads! Ready to go!
Love this song along with Life during Wartime. My two favourites from this band.
Just watch 'Stop Making Sense' in your own time. Life changing! Love you guys
David Byrne is a genius. Sometimes weird, but always interesting. I recommend "Nothing But Flowers", "Road to Nowhere", "Sax and Violins", and their cover of "Take Me to the River" (the original of which you just did!!).
Love Talking Heads.
"The Lady Don't Mind" is another catchy, syncopated Talking Heads song.
And since you have kids, you might get a kick of "Stay Up Late." That is a unique song.
Talking Heads 2 masterpieces are “Life During Wartime” & “ Once in a Lifetime”
80s music will always be the most awesome !!!
The band formed when they were students at the Rhode Island School of Design, one of the top art schools in the country.
I would also like to see you react to the first two songs on Earth wind and fire’s album. Gratitude, particularly the introduction, followed by Africano /power live
Talking Heads have a lot of great ones, but I'd like to put in a vote for "Uh Oh, Love Comes To Town," which has a very infectious bass line by the awesome Tina Weymouth.
The members of the band all attended art school which is where they got their eccentric approach to making music.
I was so into this genre when I was in college. Great dance tunes. Peace, Love!!
The creator of the video is Jim Blashfield, whose style is instantly recognizable. He also did the music videos of the following songs:
- Michael Jackson - Leave Me Alone
- Tears For Fears - Sowing The Seeds Of Love
- Paul Simon - Boy In The Bubble
Excellent choice. Completely original song and video by David Byrne and the gang. Always turned in great performances when they were a band and David continues to entertain and create up to this day.
There were two great rock movies the first one was " The Last Waltz" by the band. The second was by the Talking Heads " Stop Making Sense".
"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." That was a graffiti I saw on a bathroom wall a few decades ago. BTW, one of the Talking Heads' wonderfully weird songs is "Perfect World" from the same album, Little Creatures.
******DAVID BYRNE & 2 of the Bandmates met at the prestigious RHODE ISLAND SCHOOL of DESIGN art school. That Might Explain Their Unique Take on Everything. They then moved to NY & joined the growing punk scene there.
Even though my now wife and I weren't huge fans of "art rock" or however you want to categorize them, Talking Heads tapes were on continuous rotation on my car stereo back in high school and college (late 70s-mid 80s)...and we still love them!
Shout out to both t-shirts (big KISS fan here). 😁🖤
The Talking Heads occupy a special place in my heart. 💜😊
Got to see the Stop Making Sense tour at the Costa Mesa Fairgrounds and it was amazing!!! It was visually and musically one of the best concerts I'd seen in a long time🔥🔥🔥...you two opened a door to some very interesting music so please play some more Talking heads❤❤❤ please stay safe with this crazy weather...love you two😊
Whenever we listened to The Talking Heads, our kids would run to jump on a little indoor trampoline we had. Definitely fun for the kids! They did do Psycho Killer, one of my favorites. I agree with the comment that they are artists in every sense.
